The three-star rating was a bit under-rated in my opinion. Four of us drank and ate dinner there. Considering the fact that this was "bar food", it was excellent! This was a self-proclaimed "locals-only" bar, to was totally welcoming and friendly. I had 3 draft beers and the chopped burger wrap. It was an excellent meal!!!! Stopped in for a quick bite and was pleasantly surprised. The vibe was very laid back and it was a bar setting kind of loud music and people talking but I didn't mind that. Didn't get any drinks so can't speak to the drink menu. Service was pretty quick. We sat on the tables (bar style) along the window and had to go up and order the food at the bar. We only ordered apps so we got the Brussels sprouts and grilled Kielbasa. Both apps were amazing. The portions were very good and price was very affordable. I have always loved this spot. Great food and quick service usually. However there is a new blonde bartender that is very unkind. My daughter and I came here for lunch and have never felt more unwanted ever. Everytime we ordered a drink or food, or asked for napkins she made us feel like a nuisance to her. Came to Portsmouth for the weekend. Decided to check out TJs. Saw cockroaches in the bar area. 10 out of 10 would not recommend this place.

Honestly, I love TJs. Many of the reviews for this establishment paint it out to be a college frat party, but that honestly has not been my experience. I will start out by stating that TJs does stay open late, so therefore there is a late-night crowd. As anyone knows, patrons that partake in late-night crowds can sometimes get rowdy, and therefore, there are negative reviews about the staff. For what it is worth, the staff at TJs have always been incredibly awesome whenever I go. They are attentive, fast, and nice. Can the establishment get packed during the late night hours? Absolutely, but the staff do a great job of navigating this kind of rush to provide a great experience for all patrons. That being said, my favorite time for going to TJs is during their pre-rush time, which is typically anytime before 8/9pm. The bar is expansive, but no matter where you sit, it feels like you are sitting at the bar. There are TVs everywhere to watch any game that might be on, and they always have drink specials when Boston/New England teams are playing. Drinks are your typical bar drinks (think vodka sodas, margaritas, etc.) but they also have a wide variety of draft and can offerings. My favorite thing about TJs? Their food. It's probably the most underrated food in the Portsmouth area. They have a wide variety of offerings, and they consistently change up their specials. Think elevated pub food...not your greasy gross pub food. And their portions are huge for the money that you end up spending. All in all, TJs will continue to be a frequent spot of mine. Know what you are getting into when you come late night, but if you get the chance to come pre-rush, you'll find the charm and allure of the food, staff, and venue. read more

TJs was part of our mission to work our way through the bars and restaurants of our new hometown. We really enjoyed the setting as it is well lit with plenty of windows for people watching. Even from the bar. Our bartender was super friendly and gave us great service. The beer selection was decent and I had a Maine Lunch, which came as a full pint (some places only give you a 12 oz pour). The food was good too. I had the strawberry and goat cheese salad with shrimp and my husband enjoyed his falafel wrap with fries. It definitely felt less touristy and laid back than some of the surrounding places. This place is great. They have good drinks and cheap beer. It draws a late night crowd but during the day is when it shines. There is always plenty of sports on tv and the sound is on for most games which is huge. On top of that this place has the most under rated food in Portsmouth. I've never had a bad meal here. Not only is it too quality but it's innovative too. They serve a crab rangoon flat bread and always have funky specials. If you pass up this place for lunch you have made a mistake. read more

Service was very good as was the food. Wife had a flatbread pizza that was great! It was large and cooked well with fresh ingredients. My chicken wrap was good, but needed a dressing. BEWARE, they STEAL from you. I wish I could give this place 0 stars. Not only does it smell like the rug hasn't been cleaned since it opened and the beers are warm, they can now add stealing to their repotoire. I used to frequent this bar when I visited family in Portsmouth. I could always get over the warm beers since they were so cheap and always had the games on. Well? Never again. Last Saturday night I accidentally left my card at the bar. They closed out the card and added a $17 tip on a $55 drinks only bar tab. Are you KIDDING me? When I tried to discuss this with the owner, she was very rude and short. She said they add a 25% tip on tabs left opened only it's not STATED anywhere. Legally, it needs to be stated somewhere. Also, last time I checked 25% of $55 is $13 and change. NOT $17. So they're either really bad at math, or just plain LIARS. I think the latter. Needless to say I will NEVER return to this bar again. Just poor, awful customer service to do that to a good patron. I would have gladly left them 20% when I closed out my tab. Clearly, the people who run this place have no ethics, or sense of how to run a business. read more

First off, Tequila Jacks is now known as TJs. It is a great casual place to watch any sporting event. They just started a Sunday brunch from 11am - 2pm, with a wide variety of menu items. Their lunch/dinner is great, huge sandwiches, great wings. If you are not into the sports thing, they do have a separate lounge area on the other side of the bar. It has leather couches, tables and its own bar. The crowd is mixed and can get crowded late. read more

Our daughter got married on December 30th in Portsmouth. The wedding party and many guests were staying the next night to celebrate New Years Eve. We thought it would be a good idea to find a place where we could watch the Patriots game the next day. We had a difficult time finding a place that would accommodate us. We just wanted a place to gather where people could buy drinks and get food. Establishments wanted guarantees of up to $5,000!!! A couple of months before the wedding we went into TJ's and asked about reserving space. We could not have asked for a better place to have this. The owner, Bethany, was more than accommodating. She told us the night we were there that we could have use of a separate room. About a week before our event Bethany contacted us and asked what we thought people might want to eat or drink and made sure there was plenty on hand. The bartender Mike handled the room with extreme efficiency. He made drinks in a timely manner and placed orders for food. There was plenty of other staff on hand to deliver food and help out as needed. The other side of the place was open to the general public and that was packed as well. This did not affect our service in any way. All of our guests commented on how good the food was. If you're looking for a good place to have drinks and watch a game this is the place. Good food and a great staff. We will be sure to visit whenever we are in Portsmouth. read more

This was a great place to get a couple of appetizers and drinks after a long day of exploring the area. I got the fried pickles and cheesesteak egg rolls which were phenomenal and priced very reasonably. The beer and cider on tap was also cheap. The bar is huge with multiple tv's to look at. Every single person here, minus one single bartender, was a complete asshole from the second our group walked in to the second we left. For bringing in so much business to a completely empty restaurant, this establish was not only rude, but had shitty service and seemed like they would rather have it completely dead than bring in business. Me and my friends are always coming to Portsmouth, and decided to go to TJs at off hours for happy hour deals, which half of the party wasn't even charged for, and they still proceeded to be absolutely horrendous. I would never ever ever come back to this place. Every single person minus the one bartender should be fired and never work in the restaurant industry ever again. Even though my friends and I had no intention of receiving special prices on drinks, we were told that we were forbidden entrance into the bar because we had wrist bands on. The bar, NO exaggeration, had four people in it at the time. Why they didn't want our business is beyond me. I went to TJ's on February 22nd. I bought ONE drink for $6.50 and a $1 tip for a total of $7.50. They charged my card for $8.50. I know that is not a huge amount but it's the concept behind it. That is stealing. Imagine if they do that to EVERYONE who goes there? I will be going there the next time they are open to ask for my $1 back with the signed receipt. Will keep you posted. read more
