Went last weekend again for the pumpkins (it was raining, no hay ride) and truly liked it... Such a beautiful place! There was a fall festival in full swing when we arrived. Tractor rides, pick-your-own pumpkins and apples, a small petting zoo, antique car show, live music, and a small farmers market. We just happened to pick this weekend to check out the farm, but even when there is no festival, the farm still offers pick-your-own options depending on the season and fruits available. I know in the spring and summer, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and peaches are favorites. Apple cider and fresh cider doughnuts are made on premise and are very tasty. The Applecrest Farm Bistro was closed when I arrived at 5 on Labor Day, so I settled for a shopping tour of the high-ceilinged grocery store. I viewed the bright, new barnboarded environment with fresh eyes, having not been by since the days of the old dim orchard outlet in the even older cavernous barn. Overall, well done on the new place, Applecrest owners, investors, designers and architects. You've nicely duplicated an environment that has become de rigeuer in the retail category of farm-market-themed experiences for customers who aren't put off by the considerable amount of cash required to satisfy their quest for an heirloom tomato, an English breakfast radish, a bunch of champagne grapes, a half-dozen quail eggs and a bumpy ride in a horse-drawn wagon. With a little live bluegrass music on the side and some face painting during the ubiquitous fall festivals these places all offer, you have pretty much the whole package.. The now-gone Tuttle's Red Barn in Dover, then America's oldest family farm, was the trailblazer in the upscale farmstand-cum-gourmand grocery store category around here 40 years ago. Cider Hill Farm in nearby Amesbury is another good example of this modern yet old-timey approach where you can stoop or climb to pick your own stuff out in the fields and orchards as a recreational activity, buy it already picked by the seasonal farmworkers Trump is so anxious to deport, and get to see a chicken and maybe a pig, goat and horse right up close. Today the Farm at Eastman's Corner in Kensington, conceived and fueled by owner/philanthropist/billionaire Alan Lewis, is the undeniable pinnacle of this brand of farmstand glitz, outdistancing in all ways the others of like marketing concepts. But Applecrest, claiming to be New Hampshire's oldest and largest orchard, is a solid attractor for the folks who frequent these ersatz farm-as-entertainment destinations. If you've never been to Applecrest and like this type of place, do visit. Kids are welcome and catered to. Leave Fido at home, though. (Good idea, the no dogs at the farmstand policy. Dogs will wreck a nice petting zoo and scare all the chickens too. At least my dogs will.) If you want a single practical reason to visit Applecrest, go for the selection of apples and peaches. Really good! And at $3 a pound for picked pecks of peerless orchard produce, you get reasonable value too. Aside from the orchard haul, I found Applecrest also offers a really nice selection of its own vegetables, berries, flowers and herbs. Lots of purple stuff. Purple green beans at $2 a pound. A bunch of three fat purple carrots for $3. Purple basil for several bucks per plastic baggy package. A nice head of dark purple romaine for just $2. Purple seems to be the new green and yellow. I bought a lot of purple stuff. Applecrest also serves up its own baked pies, breads, muffins and biscuits, freshly packaged or frozen. The smallish fresh donuts are good. Good like eat a half dozen from the paper bag on the way to checkout good. (That was a $6 dollar walk.) You'll also find a bunch of third-party fancy lines with substantial price stickers which, if you are of modest means, will cause you to say "Whoa" or worse out loud. Pickles from Maine at $9 for an 8-ounce jar are just one example. Many other third-party products also sport prices that will buckle the knees of thee of delicate pocketbooks. I got a kick out of the package of authentic British piccalilli spice (salt, sugar, turmeric, mustard powder, a little clove) that was made in Derry (NH) and priced at just under $10 for a few ounces. Applecrest retail bottomline: Mostly pricey, yes. Targeted to the upscale, farm-as-tourist-destination crowd, yes. Bright lights, clean rest rooms, smells like an apple orchard, yes. Nicely presented, yes. Out in the country, yes. Worth a trip, yes. But keep in mind. This ain't your garden-variety family farmstand. (Pardon the pun.) And it sure ain't your spot for everyday grocery shopping. When you see people in $400 jeans snapping pictures of the donuts, then pushing a mini-shopping cart that is going to ring up at well more than a Benjamin, maybe two Benjamins, you know we're not in Market Basket any more, Toto. read more

Just reviewing the pies - ordered online and picked them up Thanksgiving morning. What a smooth, delightful experience. The price hadn't gone up very much (maybe a buck?) from last year. Lobe everything about this place. It is fruit heaven. In one day we were able to pick apples, razberries, blueberries and jucey peaches. Free pie eating contest for the kids, live music, pick your own flowers....an ice cream barn, bbq and hot cider donuts and cold cider....and a sunflower maze! Its well thought out, and even though the parking lot was full, we were able to enjoy the day and it never felt crowded. Its the way apple picking should be. Staff was wonderful and people were friendly. Such a nice change of pace from the overcrowded orchards in MA...like Honey Pot...! Also appreciated being able to bring our dog. Perfect day! read more

Went here to pick strawberries and it was just a mess....the strawberry fields are not well maintained, there are weeds and other plants growing within the strawberry plants and it's hard to get around them to pick the strawberries. What they don't tell you is that they charge you for the tray that you use to pick strawberries. On there website, they claim there pet friendly and to bring your pup, but when I brought my pup they told us that we have to keep our pup in the car whilst we pick since pups aren't allowed near the fields. The staff isn't that friendly. Pick your own apples is an absolute rip off! 30.00 a peck, they advertise 15.00 for half-peck but wouldn't sell a half-peck bag! And goes up from there! Decent place to go, if you go earlier than later. There are parking attendants and people stopping traffic to let pedestrians cross the street, which is actually nice. Such a phenomenal place to have in the community. Fresh picking, harvest festivals, hay rides, petting zoos, this is a great place to spend an afternoon at, regardless of what age. Also, the BEST ice-cream in town -- freshly made down the road, and mixed with their own fruit! Set your timer to count down to the Ginger ice-cream in the Fall, it is SO worth it! All the flavours are delicious. REAL fruit in the strawberry ice cream, and decadent and thick Chocolate, the mint is a great option for that second scoop to ANY flavour on the board, I could go on. Look out for Seasonal specials like Ginger, Pumpkin and Black Raspberry, and don't forget to get it in a made-before-your-very-eyes, warm & maple-y delicious waffle cone! I try to make the Creamery's winter hours at least once a month (I wish they would extend them), and in the summer, I'm probably there every 4th day. The pies are fresh and delicious; apple takes the...pie...and peach and strawberry-rhubarb a tied at second. The Apple Cider donuts are so popular they need to be quartered when I take them in to work so that everyone can get some. You can call ahead and they'll bake some fresh for you in the morning and have them ready to pick up (they have run out on other occasion, I dare not take any chances with these) Freshly squeezed orange juice is a must to take home in gallon jugs for the weekend. And the assortment of jams / chutneys/ salsas/ sauces make for great presents or grill accompaniments. I always buy my honey there too (locally made in Rye, and the flavourful "Late Summer" variety) I have never tried the frozen pies / entrees / breads, but intend to soon. Produce is a little more expensive than the neighbourhood grocery store, but Farm Fresh and Local make it worthwhile. Although, if you track their growing season online, you can guarantee the crop of the week will be at a better rate. They have the best apples I have had on the Seacoast, and will recommend the species of the produce depending on how you plan to cook it. Everyone there takes great pride in their farm and is happy to help you. They have a "vintage" store sections now, stocking retro furniture to office decor to cutlery. While a little bit pricey, every once in a while you'll find a unique must-have item that fell right out of the thrift heavens. I would make it a point to bring my visitors here. Everyone in the area should check them out and help out your local Farm, especially when you can pet a Llama and eat delicious ice cream while doing it! read more

The Farm looks authentic and there are plenty of vegetables and organic food, but be prepared to shell out $$$$. DO NOT go there for their "BISTRO"!! I went there for brunch the other day and ordered the Spinach Florentine (the only semi-"normal" thing on their menu- Duck eggs?! come on!!). The were out - No eggs left for brunch on a Sunday - really? So the only only other item that didn't involve duck eggs or heavy carbs was the "Farm Fresh Salad." OK, fine. I'll be healthy, it's brunch, I'm sure it's a nice big brunchy salad with lots of vegetables. Nope. It was literally a handful of mixed lettuce and 4 croutons - for $7. No tomatoes, onions - or any other vegetable - and for $7!!! I will never go back there for a meal. read more

We have been going to Applecrest for a few years now, typically for our traditional apple picking trip. It's a huge place, with big orchards growing many different PYO fruits, such as apples, peaches, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and pumpkins. They have a creamery, a large farm stand an inside market, and weekend festivals with hayrides and a petting zoo for the kids. Parking is free and plentiful. On our most recent visit, a week ago, we realized they were under construction which meant there was a lot of extra mud and gravel to walk through that isn't typically there. I didn't think they did a great job blocking off the contruction area either. We hopped a trailer being pulled by a tractor to our orchard, which was pretty far off. You CANNOT walk to the orchard, you MUST take the tractor ride. Once in the orchard, you can buy a bag for a bushel ($30) or a peck ($20), and once you fill your bag, you get back on the tractor which will take you back to the main buildings. Note: don't sit directly behind the tractor or you'll be eating the exhaust your entire ride. Hayrides on wagon pulled by large horses looked fun, but I wasn't about to pay $15 for my family of 3 to ride. I thought that was a bit excessive. The petting zoo was $1 per person and another $2 for a decent sized bag of food. We were there earlier in the day and the animals were very active and interested in eating. My toddler loved the animals and had decent access to them. We got our dozen apple cider donuts to go, and drank the cider (which is not pasturized and I wouldn't recommend giving to small children). We ate lunch of clam chowder, butternut bisque and burgers and sausages on the grill. We got their own homemade ice cream in a waffle cone before leaving. The bluegrass band they had playing was great and there were many people who had brought their own chairs to set up and listen to the band. Applecrest has us coming back year after year so they must be doing something right. I do think they're a little on the high side for prices, and if they go up we will probably find another place to go for our annual apple picking. There are many orchards around. read more

My teenage daughter wanted to go with her friend, I thought it was a great idea and it's close to where we live. OMG $30 for 1 peck of apples?!?! After picking apples, I offered to wait in the very long donut line while they did the corn maze. After about 20 minutes in the donut line, with a good 20 more to go, they say the donuts are moving into the store location. I meander into the store to see another very long line. Decided to not wait anymore and returned back outside to discover they're still selling donuts outside. I'm the last person to get served and I ask for a dozen. "We only have 11". "Ok" I say, "I'll take 11". When the cashier wanted to charge me for a dozen, I shared my frustration with the multiple lines and asked why should I pay for a dozen when I only have 11? Came here during peak season for picking apples on a Sunday and it was packed, it looked like there were a lot of options for kids including a petting zoo, pony rides, pick your own pumpkins, pick your own berries, and face painting. I went with the pick your own apples with a peck bag total cost-$20; riding on the hayride was fun and the demo by the guy in the orchard showing consumers how to pick apples properly so they wouldn't damage next years crop and showing how the map works. I love me some apple picking. Call me old-fashioned, it is one of my favorite family activities. Applecrest is well-managed, they know what areas of their orchard have the ripest fruit and you take a hayride out to the prime areas. They point you in the right direction and just let you loose. After you exhaust yourself from picking/throwing rotten apples at each other, you can head down to the festival area. Here there are food stands with hot cider, grilled meats and corn, and apple cider doughnuts. There is a small covered market with local goods, like pies, maple syrup and jams. The food is consistently great, especially the doughnuts and the grilled corn. There is also a field where you can pick your own pumpkin. read more

A good way to kick off the fall. $20 a peck and $30 for 1/2 bushel of pick our own apples. Lots of people today so picking was a bit nuts, not the relaxing experience I elected. Still really fun because I was with my wife who is hilarious. Lots of little kids running around which is really entertaining. Yes there are lines to pick apples but it actually moves fast. I went to Applecrest today with my wife and twin sons (15 months). It was definitely a great experience, with good prices and a great selection. We only picked apples, and while a lot of the trees were picked pretty bare. When you found a good tree though, the apples were fantastic. Not only did we eat a couple as we were picking, but so did the twins (big smiles). After picking, we got a 12 oz bottle of fresh cider and a dozen hot cider donuts ($7 total). Again, big smiles from all 4 of us. I have two negative comments. Number one is about the trip to the apples. The only way to get from the main complex to the apples is via a ride on trailers attached to a tractor. Even though it's only a few feet, you weren't allowed to walk. A definite disadvantage to those of us pushing strollers (a double stroller at that). Number two is about the crowds (yes, it's a good thing when there are lots of people at a business). The crowds were overall pretty inconsiderate, and the wait times for either food, the trip out to the apple orchards or cider donuts was a bit much (this is why we got donuts instead of hot dogs, much quicker line. Overall, a definite four star experience, with only moderate drawbacks. I would recommend Applecrest to anyone, and I will definitely go back. read more

We come here once a year for apples and generally arrive towards the end of the day where traffic is less. Plenty of parking here and many activities taking place during the season. The company is nice enough to provide outhouses on the property. Inside is where all the picked and bundled apples are. Of course you can pick your own but we prefer to grab a bundle. The cost of picking vs buying a bundle already picked is about the same. Bundles are expensive. Depending on the bundle or type of Apple, expect to pay at least $16 for a 10lb bundle. It is expensive for sure. Overall a decent experience. read more

Love, love, love this place! By far my favorite orchard for pick-your-own apples. I discovered this place last year thanks to a good friend. I went again the weekend of October 23rd, late in the season because I wanted to pick some nice Fuji apples. It was fairly late in the season so I didn't have any problems with the lines other people experienced. I also don't have kids, so I can pretty much run in, do what I want, and get the heck out. I dropped off my peck of apples in the car, then headed to their little market because I can't leave without buying a few treats for myself...they usually have samples of products setup throughout the store, and it's always nice to try something before you buy it. They sell a variety of fresh produce, cheeses, spreads, jellies, fudge, candy, pies, etc., etc. They have great variety, and I've never been disappointed with a purchase. I was hungry so I also got a cheeseburger from their outdoor grill. It was just a regular plain burger, but the bun it was on was delicious, and the burger itself was pretty good, too. Had a good amount of char, which I like, and the cheese was thick and gooey. I didn't try it this time, but I've heard their roasted corn is absolutely delicious. I'll make a point to try it next time. I couldn't leave without getting some cider donuts, so I picked up a half dozen, with cinnamon sugar coating, and also grabbed a hot cider for myself, too.
