I have been meaning to try Appu's for a while. Although it was a little hard to find in the building, it is tucked away behind the pharmacy. I mentioned that it was my first time at the Cafe & ordered the Maharaja Burrito based on prior Yelp reviews. It had a generous portion of mild flavored tumeric rice. I appreciated the optional avocado & pico de gallo. I deliberately asked if they were extra. Although I could I have sworn I heard that there was no charge for the avocado, I was charged $1.50 for two partial slices. This is one way to drive people to online ordering & mitigate the risk of confusion. I consider this purchase a fair value. read more

Amazing food! I just had the Maharani Burrito and it was perfect! Reminded me of my grandmothers Guyanese cooking! My girlfriend had the Health Mex Burrito with Avocado and she loved it! The Samosa Chat was very flavorful! I've been vegan for a month now and this is one of the best Vegan places I've had! The lemon grass Chai was the best way to finish off this delicious meal! Love this place. One of the best spots to grab lunch in Long Beach. I don't usually leave reviews but feel compelled to do so for this little restaurant. The owner is always there and helpful, and really passionate about his food. That sort of conviction about how good one's food tastes is contagious and makes me want to try everything. For certain Appu's fragrant odorbfrom the kitchen have lured me to do a take out. The same building is Quest lab work andy dentist. Everything tasted great. One issue for me is that they use microwaves, I don't like microwave made food, even to warm something up. But that did not stop me from ordering thing that possibly does not need the microwave to be used. read more

Heard good things about this place and tried it out today. Glad I did! You can find the small cafe around the rear of a large medical building. Everything on the menu is meat free but the paneer tikka tacos were so good! Filled with fluffy rice and topped with a tikka paneer, the spice level was perfect and that nice creamy texture you expect in a good tikka. 3 good sized tacos for around $10. While located in a medical center building, I was pleasantly surprised with my order at Appu's café. I drove here from Cerrito's And while Cerrito's has an abundance of Indian food, this small humble spot is not one to be ignored. As I walked in I was greeted by the owner who recommended me the burrito and chai tea lemongrass. He said they were his most popular and so I couldn't not try them out. The combination sounded a little strange but was delightfully good. While most burritos are on the heavy side this one was light and allowed me to carry-on about my day. The chai tea latte was also really good and I'm not a chai tea kind of guy. Great job to Appu, I wish him much success. read more

This area of Long Beach has been desperately needing a place like Appu's. I'm not vegetarian by any means but I'm all about eating healthy and deliciously. Appu's definitely delivers. Great guilt free food at a great price. FOOD I love kale so I find myself ordering the black lentil soup more than anything. Hearty and delicious. I tried the masala omelette for the first time today and it was perfection! You get your choice of sourdough or rye bread and your choice of cheese. I went with sourdough and cheddar. I will definitely try to recreate a masala omelette at home one of these days. SERVICE Service has always been on point. Very friendly and accommodating. There's only been one person working during the times I've visited and I could see it becoming overwhelming if there's a lunch rush but I haven't had any issues with the timeliness of the food being executed. Appu's is a great hole in the wall spot that's great for a quick healthy bite. Do yourself the favor! read more

I will admit, even despite the five stars on Yelp!, I had a few reservations about a supposed cafe on the inside of a medical building. The place was difficult to find, which I now find particularly regrettable considering the experience I had, but I was not giving up! The reviews are too good. So I called the number and this gentleman picked up and I found exactly where I was going. Had I driven around the building I would have seen the sign, but my GPS had no way of telling me to drive behind the Lakewood Medical Offices. I thought I might order the eggplant parmesan or something similar, but instead I was offered samples of the vegetarian soup. All three were fantastic, most notably the mushroom. I was sold. I ended up with a combination plate of yellow rice with a crunchy carrot and green pea relish, spinach soup, mushroom soup, and a few pieces of naan (bonus because he doesn't have it every day!). To make a long story short, I think I have found my new lunch spot! I was trying to draft my Yelp! review in my head while I drove back to work (extra bonus, it's only five minutes away from my office), but I was at a loss for words. Not only is the food second-to-none, the gentleman (whose name I didn't catch) is so knowledgeable about everything he makes and offers. He also offered me a lemongrass chai tea, which I greedily accepted, and it was equally amazing. Not to mention the fact that the service was superb. He came to check on me and was very personable. I can't wait to go back. I wish we Yelpers could make this guy famous so he could branch out and have a whole restaurant to himself, because he is certainly passionate about food and nutrition and is very good at what he does; he definitely deserves it! And I would prefer it if the restaurant was in the same parking lot as my building so it would be even closer. Perhaps he might consider moving from the back of a medical building to the front of a building comprised of several law offices? Either way, I'll be dreaming of lunch tomorrow when I go to bed tonight! read more

I was in the Long Beach area and my husband and I decided to try this place for lunch because of the favorable Yelp reviews. I must say that we weren't disappointed with the food at all. Healthy needn't always be tasteless or bland and Appu's can convince you about this. If you're looking for a delicious, well-seasoned, healthy vegan/ vegetarian option in the neighborhood, this is the place to go to. The lady taking our order was really nice and explained the food options to us. She also told us that the preparations that they served there were the owner's and his mother's recipes. Lunch buffet starts at 11 and I was in time for one. The only thing to note is that this buffet, unlike the usual all-you-can-eat-buffets, is made for you by the server. You tell the server what you want to have and they build your plate for you in a box. While my husband tried the maharaja burrito that was highly recommended on Yelp reviews (and he liked it), I decided to go for the lunch buffet which was a rice preparation with three soups (two on the rice, one on the side) and a tasty sprouted moong/ mung and carrots salad. There were four soup options and all of them looked amazing! When I said that I couldn't make up my mind, the lady told me that I can sample all of them before I made my decision. I loved the mushroom soup and spinach soup. They were creamy but not heavy at all. The moong lentil soup was bang on, delicious and is in my list of comfort foods. I finished all of it and did not feel heavy at all! I would definitely recommend this place and would go back again. The food was good and simple. When we visited this place, we saw only a few tables in there. It wasn't a problem for us since there were just the two of us but it may not be the best place for a group unless they want to do a takeout. The only major hitch for the first timers would be about finding this place. We were driving around the parking lot for a while before we realized that it was in the BACK OF THE LOT. There's a small sign at the back of the building directing you to the place (the lady told us that there's a small sign in the front too, but we didn't see it) but if you're not looking for it, you'll miss it. read more

This place was recommended by Yelp since I am vegan. I was really excited to try it because the reviews were great and the photo taken of the food looked amazing. I ordered through grub hub and the items I ordered were labeled Vegan. One of the items came with cheese which was a little disappointing. Also I ordered a burrito which it was supposed to have two different soups and such but it was really just a rice burrito. I give it two stars because I liked they put the burrito on the grill and the rice was flavorful. The burrito was very dry though which again was disappointing. I randomly found this amazing cafe while at an appointment in the building. I had a Doctor's burrito which was very good. They even let you choose your own spice level for the pico de gallo. The owner is super friendly & so proud of his cafe. As he should be! The place is spotless and the food delicious. He gave me samples of two of his soups (the spinach and the mushroom) and both were amazing with layered flavors. He also made me a sample of his hot lemongrass chai (which didn't really appeal to me) and I loved it! Just a few seats and he said it gets very busy at lunch time so you may want to go earlier or later, or he recommended ordering ahead. Will go back. It's behind the hospital so you can park in one of their takeout spots (even if you dine in, i think). The food is all vegetarian or vegan, as the owner is actually a physician on the fourth floor of the hospital! This cafe is his side hobby, a way of teaching the public to eat better for their health. The food itself offers a selection of Mexican, Indian, fusion, and American cuisines. I ordered the rice bowl, and the owner let me try out all the soups it could be topped with. I pickled the mushroom masala (I THINK), and the rice itself had an assortment of bell peppers, spices and golden raisins. It was delicious and i want to make my own now. Though the food is not what you'd get at an expensive restaurant, it feels good to support small businesses run by good people who care about what their customers put in their bodies. read more
