PROBLEM: People who order through the phone make their way to the restaurant to have to wait their turn to pay this making their experience not so great RESOLUTION: Provide the ability for customers to pay Via web; It's 2019. This will aliviate the woman in the front who works so hard and diligently. Room to Expand: PROBLEM: Folks that make their way to the restaurant wait on average of about 30 to 40 minutes to be seated. This greatly reduces customer satisfaction and has a direct negative impact. Solution: Invest on providing the ability to have more room for customers by tearing walls and expand. This will alliviate wait time which we all know, we want things fast and easy. The above will alliviate how hard your employees work thus improving employee turnover. [Update 1 Feb 2020] we came back after a year or so. The restaurant as very good business as usual - 10 mins wait even though we arrive before 6pm. We ordered the fried fish cake with another order to go, udon noodle soup, beef flat noodle and Mea Kraw Lar. We came back on Sunday about 4pm. The restaurant is still full. Their business is really good! We ordered the fried fish cake again - it is Tod Man in Thai , Thai spring roll, Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce ( cones with fried tofu ) , shrimp pad Thai and shrimp fried rice ( to take away ). It is again an excellent experience. Therefore, if you want AUTHENTIC Asian food , this is th We arrived slightly after 2:15 pm and the restaurant is full! This is on a Saturday so business is good. Orange chicken is amazing and served with real slices of oranges, nim chows are a classic (I get them with no basil/mint), fried rice and wonton soup is the best I've ever had, and the crispy shrimp (my recent new thing) is so nice and flavorful. I've had much debate with people over the years as to which "APSARA" restaurant in Providence is the better one. Yes, there are 2 of them. One on Public street and the other on Hope on the East side. THIS Apsara, is by far the better of the two. And here are my comparisons: Hope St: Owned by different people (Though, I heard from the same family). Sure, the location is "nicer" due to being on the East Side, but there's such limited parking and with the already bustling businesses surrounding it, street parking is often scarce. The menu seems smaller and more limited. And finally, the food just doesn't have the "Zing" that I get from Apsara (Public St). And of the few times I've been here, the waitstaff have often been cold and uninviting. Public St: I'm not one to let a neighborhood define the scope of where I eat. Some of the BEST restaurants I've been to in LA and NY are in "less desirable" locations. This said, Public street's neighborhood might not have the best Rep, but the restaurant stands alone, with it's own parking lot, and quite a bit of character. -The waitstaff have always been on point, courteous, and friendly. -The Nime Chow is to DIE for, and anything else on the menu that you so desire to try is.. downright awesome. Apsara certainly did a great job of seducing my taste buds with their super flavorful dishes. Their thick and elongated nime chow was delectable. It reminded me of Vietnamese summer rolls but with a different twist thanks to the unique dipping sauce. The natang brought me back down memory lane as I had grown up eating more than my fair share of crispy rice cakes. The portion for this was pretty big and I was surprised it's listed as an appetizer! The Cambodian beef stew was the real star of the show, as the soup was amazing and filled to the brim with lots of meat and vegetables. It was a light homemade broth, almost like something your grandmother would make. The soup tasted like borscht soup but on crack for me. It was exploding with flavors. when i came back to visit my hometown, i really wanted me some apsara. so i did a take out order to have a house party. the place itself has not changed. but they have changed some things on the dinner menu compared to before. the parking is very limited but there is street parking. please note, this is NOT the same restaurant as apsara palace, which is owned separately and independently. this IS the original location.they use to have a tofu dish which was outstanding but it is no longer present. also some items on their menu are not being served which i found out when i tried to order them . food ordered nimchow(aka summer rolls)-great wonton soup-good shrimp fried rice-good but could use more seasoning; they also did not use jasmine rice singapore noodles-great lemongrass thai style with chicken-good stir fried vermicelli with shrimp-ok, some noodles were too hard price -good for the food amount; but i think their quality is going down counterservice-good, no issues; FYI, they do NOT take discover overall-good , solid meal. the place has become a providence staple. PROS: - friendly staff - great selection and quality of food - cheap prices CONS: - parking - lengthy menu - limited offerings of drinks now, for the long version: showed up on a Friday night around 6:30pm, uh oh: parking lot looked full. got the last parkable spot, phew. inside, table for 4 was readily available. not for long though; 15 min or so after we sat down, the place was completely filled, short of the largest table (seats 6-7) next to us. was a bit wary to see "Cambodian, Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese Cuisine" on the awning -- places that try to be everything usually end up with achieving nothing. in all fairness, though, i would imagine Cambodian/Thai/Vietnamese having huge common grounds, them being bordering countries; just not sure where the Chinese part is fitting in the big picture. staff was VERY nice, from the guy who showed us the last parking spot while hauling out trash, to the boss/senior-looking lady setting up the tables while we walked in, to our waitress and runner -- all very courteous, smiley, and calm (without being ineffective) -- the kind of peacefulness i need but don't always see in many places. the menu would be the first thing people like Gordon Ramsey or Robert Irvine wouid butcher: 8 pages FULL of WORDS!!! mostly different dishes made with your choice of protein; just repeat that beef/chicken/shrimp thingee 80 times throughout! can totally simplify that visual overload. the accompanying pictures, while a nice gesture, are a bit too small to be informative. we had a native Cambodian friend at the table to guide us through; ordered 2 appetizers, 2 noodle dishes, and 2 entrees. here's the breakdown: APPETIZERS: - nim chow (fresh roll) w/grilled chicken w/peanut vinegar dipping sauce: ingredients very fresh, chicken is moist, good overall. - natang (crispy rice cake w/minced meat curry sauce): the coconut milk in the sauce make it creamy; the rice cake is crunchy but not hard, very easy to bite off. very good dish. NOODLES: - beef satay udon: "udon" being a Japanese invention (i believe), i don't know how "authentic" this is. but who cares, it's good! a bit spicy, but beef is tender, and the flavor is there. - loat (short round rice noodles) w/chicken: doesn't look like anything, but one bite of this dish sent me right to my food nirvana. i don't know what it's called in english, but we chinese people call it "wok hei" -- something that can only be achieved by a very hot wok and very quick stirs. it is something american cuisines just can't provide. ENTREES: - beef loc lac (cubed beef in black pepper + oyster sauce, added w/black pepper lime dipping sauce): beef is cooked well but the cut is lean, a second more in the wok they can turn dry; the oyster sauce is very mainstream in chinese cooking so was not "wowed", but the lime dipping sauce gave it a good kick. - lemongrass stir-fry w/seafood: also a little spicy, but the curry and coconut milk made it very delectable. gives you plenty of sauce to mix into the rice too! DRINKS (that didn't happen): there were only a few things on the list (sodas, coffees, thai iced tea); heard they're BYOB (on Tue & Wed only?). hubby and friend were to order the egg soda (which consists of raw egg, condensed milk, and club soda -- good stuff!!), but they "didn't have them" that night, which is weird coz all the ingredients come in handy. i was to try the Cambodian coffee, but they only had them cold (read: pre-made). besides, i wanted something hot, so we just stuck w/tea and water. OTHERS -- exterior / decor / cleaniness: - from the outside, the place did look like a dump, but isn't it usually where the good food comes from? - while some can think the decor being gaudy, i do appreciate the thought of making the place looking like you're in their country. it shows they really take pride being who they are too. - the place looked reasonably clean overall, but i did find bits of stuff on the condiment trays left by another diner. wasn't revolted, but.. yeah. now the BILL: for all these dishes we've ordered (had enough food to pack for 2 good-sized lunches!), the bill came to $60! SIXTY DOLLARS FOR 4 PEOPLE!!! we've spent more in an average american restaurant for just 2 of us. with no doggie bags either. haven't given a 5-star review in a long time, and i'm happy to crown Aspara for one! it could just be my chinese stomach being biased, but places w/great food and service deserve to be praised, whether it be a hole-in-a-wall or a fine-dining establishment. and i thought that lot was full when we came in! Outside of the restaurant is very deceiving for the high quality food it serves. Once you order, the food is served at your table very soon after and at portions which can serve you almost another meal...if not the whole meal itself. Not to mention, the prices are incredibly affordable and beyond reasonable. Love the nime chow and chicken pad see ew. Apsaras is in a rough neighborhood. I was not going to eat there unless I could find a spot in their small lot. I think it holds about six or seven cars. The restaurant has about twenty tables so people must park on the street. On our first visit, my friend and I had two appetizers. Shanghai, which are baby bok choy, and noodles with pickled vegetables. Then we had fish soup and fried yellow noodles with chicken and vegetables. Service was slow, and my friend's dinner came out ten minutes before mine did, but we both thought the food was good. We had big portions and took a lot home. Forty bucks for two apps, two dinners, and tea. Reasonable! Our second visit, a week later, she had their rice noodle soup with beef, and I had satay chicken with eggplant. The soup was like Pho, but the broth was different. Slightly greasy, I didn't like it. My friend put lots of red chili paste, and ate everything except the meatballs, which, by the way, had chunks of tendon poking out of them. My dinner was really good. Loved everything except the blob of rice I paid to go with it. Could have done without that. Overall, a nice dinner for 2 for $25. Again, my friend's dinner came out ten minutes before mine did. I seem to notice that it was the same around the restaurant. I would consider ordering family style and eating each dish as it arrives. Our third visit, we had satay noodles and drunken noodles. Satay are not spicy. Theirs was! Very, and using udon noodles with a little chew was nice. The drunken noodles was not spicy! Kind of a reverse of everything else I have ever had. Also a place that is mad busy all the time. Very, very good, and reasonable. Our fourth visit, we had mixed vegetables with lemongrass, coconut soup, and satay chicken and eggplant. All good. The soup and vegetables were both flavored with a yellow curry. Basically the same. Soup had bamboo shoots, string beans, shrimp, and some other things. Good. Also cheap. As a vegetarian, I asked if they can leave out fish sauce, fish oils, or oyster sauce in their preparation, and they said it's not possible for any of their dishes. That's a huge bummer because I had their food before not knowing it's completely non-vegetarian. Really great food, great selection, and authentically cooked, but unfortunately, a no-go for vegetarians or vegans! Even their veg dishes - eggplant garlic sauce, vegetable lemongrass sauce, vegetable thai basil sauce, red curry, green curry, or the noodle dishes - are not actually vegetarian because they all have fish or oyster in them. That's the only reason I give them 3 stars; otherwise, it would be a solid 5 stars because of excellent quality, quantity, and price. I strongly suggest to the owners to create a batch of their sauces minus any fish/oyster elements, to make it accessible to a growing population of vegan and vegetarian customers. I love the variety of food. Hands down best in RI. I eat here on average once month and so do many locals. I can say I know a few people now from eating here lol. The weekends are always a full house. I like going in for lunch during the week or takeout any other time. Make sure to order your food with at least 20 from your pickup time on the weekends. Then the rest of the time you would normally wait 10 to 15 minutes for your meal when it's takeout. I have never been disappointed with any item on the menu. The crispy chicken wings are everyone's favorite including my daughter, and so is the beef teriyaki with their house fried rice. It happened with an order of mine once , that was somehow inadvertently placed for pick up and not delivery . On yelp, I'm always getting this place confused with Apsara Palace. Well I'm giving this place 4 stars because the staff are super friendly! The parking lot isn't that big, but I've always found a spot when I've gone. You get the feeling you might get mugged, it's in a weird area/spot. The food was good, however I think Apsara Palace will still be my first choice. I've tried their nim chow, pad Thai and fried rice. Pretty decent, but for the price?! The better deal by far is definitely Apsara Palace. But I suppose if I wanted Thai closer to me, I'd definitely choose this spot. read more
