I love this restaurant. The food has always been excellent and the prices are reasonable. Five of us went for dinner recently and we got a few items to share, here are my impressions of the experience. - Spring rolls. Crispy and light. Small but packed with flavor, an order had 5 of them. It came with a dipping sauce. - Chicken wings. Not big but well done. They came with a sweet and sour sauce. An order had 6 of them. - Garlic green beans. Delicious. Lots of flavor and nice texture and bite. The favorite of the table that night. - Brussel sprouts. Not a large portion. Lightly fried. - Pad Thai with chicken. Light and well prepared, all sauces and flavors melded together nicely. - Fried rice with pork. Light and delicious. Good portion to share among all of us. The restaurant does not take reservations and because there are less than 10 tables in the entire place, sometimes wait times can be a bit long. Many people do take out or DoorDash. From being on my "must visit" list, to eight months later, finally making my way into the restaurant. I had done some research and knew it was a small space so I was praying there would be enough open tables. When we talked in, there were about 3 tables open. It took a bit to get seated since the host/ server was busy getting together online orders and bringing out food to other customers. But after a couple minutes, we were allowed to pick our own table. They have 3 two person tables to the left, on an elevated platform. To the far front of the space, there were two booths which could easily fit 4 people each. To the right there were 3 tables for 4-5 people each. We went with the bigger table, but moved after a couple minutes to another table for a more private setting. For an appetizer, we put in an order of crab rangoons. As my entrée, I ordered the Khao Soi with seafood and my friend ordered the beef salad which comes with sticky rice. The crab rangoons came out after about 10 minutes. They looked crispy, and were wrapped in a cute, round way. The filling wasn't as creamy as I wish it would be, but it did taste a bit healthier than regular Chinese take out. The entress came out after about another 10 minutes. My Khao Soi came out with a big bowl, with some lime and peanuts on the side. I asked for more lime and cilantro on the side. The broth was a very vibrant color, creamy, sweet, a little tangy from the lime, and because of the cilantro had a fresh and clean flavor. I loved the combination of all the flavors, and it reminded me of a curry. The noodles were soft, but not falling apart and there was a good amount of it. There was plenty of seafood including calamari, shrimp, and mussels. The calamari was a little tough but the other items were good. I loved the crispy shallots on top as they provided an additional sweet but savory element. I finished the entire thing. My friend's salad was good. It was simple in that it was salads and herbs with minced meat but it tasted good. The sticky rice came in a ball wrapped in aluminum foil, and then put into their authentic little basket so it was full to pull apart. They do have a dessert menu and we were offered some, but I had no space. It seemed like the server was handling a lot at once so kudos to him and the small but mighty team in the back cooking everything up. The mood for dinner was light and refreshing but filling and healing . I am happy to say Champa provided just that . This restaurant is small and cozy . As soon as you step inside the restaurant you are in the small dining room . We were greeted and sat . We choose a two top near the window . We were given lemon infused water for drinks and we started our dinner with the vegetable Naim Chow . They came out quickly and were fresh and crunchy. They came with a nice sauce to top off each bite with . I choose the small tom yum chicken soup for my main with a bowl of white rice . The rice was nice and fluffy . The soup was light and refreshing with mushroom , chicken and a citrus flavored broth. My friend chose a vegetable curry soup, she gave me a bite and I want to come back to have a whole bowl to myself . The flavors are bold but not overpowering. We kept looking around at everyone food and it all looked so good . I'll be back soon if not for the Naim Chow alone . read more

Had a hankering for some Thai and heard about this location and decided to give it a go. Street parking available, small dining area with 7-8 tables to accommodate couples or a small group. Service was quick, ordered chicken satay, Thai iced coffee and the spicy chicken pad thai. The satay was fresh, seasoned well and delicious. The pad thai had a great mix of veggies and chicken, but a little less spicy than I would have liked. Overall a great experience with good service and great food! I wanted some Asian food when visiting my Aunts in providence and this was amazing!! We got summer rolls (or not fried spring rolls), potstickers, for our apps. I really loved their sauces, I'm quite sure they were homemade. My mom got khao soi and it was the best I've had in the States. Everything was great! They are very upfront about how many staff work there, but the food was still served at a good pace. It's a very cozy space within the restaurant, with very limited seating. But it's a great atmosphere and wasn't loud, even though there were other parties there. I would definitely come back here. read more

With all the rave reviews of Champa, I decided to give them a shot because I was craving drunken noodles. Unfortunately, the drunken noodles here are just okay--not spicy, not complex or basil-forward. The sauce was a bit tangy and sweet, very one-note, almost like it'd come premade. The noodles weren't stir-fried too well, with a big clump all stuck together and therefore not sauced. No wok hei. I ordered it with pork and it was plentiful enough and a bit fatty. It's small and family-owned--it's not terrible; I can see it being a takeout standby but maybe my expectations were too high after reading others' reviews! And I'd hope there's better drunken noodles in Providence. Service was brusque and polite. I truly wanted to love it. Sounds like I should've gotten the khao soi! read more

The khao soi was good but not as authentic and no pickled mustard greens. Only complaint- we went and they were very busy and it seemed like just one guy working - food took forever. read more

A nice tucked away fusion restaurant with amazing flavors. If there's one thing I recommend it is definitely the Brussels sprouts. The crispy texture with jam packed Asian soy flavor easily makes it THE best sprouts I've had. While the chicken wings were crispy, I didn't find anything unique about it. Typical wings with a sweet and sour sauce. I wished they made a dish that fused the flavors from the Brussels sprouts onto the wings. The pad see U with beef was another good dish. Sweet flavor that's nicely stirred fried. However the beef was a little bland and not tender. Overall, I would come back again because the flavors were on point. I was very excited to try Champa. Champa serves Lao cuisine or Laotian cuisine and is the national cuisine of Laos. It was my first time having Lao food. The menu has so many different choices for salads, soups, fried rice, noodles, stir-fry, curry, and specialities. There are Thai food and Laotian food. We started with Thai Iced tea. It wasn't too sweet and was really good. For appetizers, we had the Laotian Style Crispy Rolls (4) which was crispy rice paper filled with chicken and mixed vegetables, served with sweet & sour chili sauce. The rolls were very crispy and the roll filling was very full. For entree, I had the Lion City Noodles with beef. This is thin rice noodles stir-fried with Thai spicy sauce, seasoned with curry, carrots, peas, bean sprouts, and baby corn. This dish was delicious, but unfortunately, I did not get any baby corn. I really liked the thin rice noodles and the flavors. The beef was very tender. My husband had the Khao Soi. This is the famous Northern noodles in a delicious mix of light yellow curry, check, ground peanuts, scallions, and fried shallots. He really enjoyed the flavors of his dish and said it was probably the best curry he has ever had. The restaurant is small with a few tables, but it is homey. Service was wonderful and they were very friendly. We told Peter, the owner, that it was our first time having Lao food and he welcomed us. Dishes were very filling and large. We had leftovers for the next day. Price of our meal wasn't bad at all! There is a 3% fee for paying for credit card. Also, there are signs saying the restaurant is no longer BYOB. read more

if you love a small, cozy, casual family owned spot with amazing aromas and generous portions of thai and laotian comfort foods then come here and dine in!!! you can take out of course but you'll miss out on warmth and escapism that comes with its home style decor. been a few times now and the main server running the shop is so hospitable. i've been here when it's slammed and packed with a small operation and here when it's quiet, both instances the food is still amazing and i end up with leftovers even if i order minimally. i would love to go on a rainy day and take my time eating each noodle so i'll have to go again soon this wet winter. read more

Oh wow this was the best meal I had on my trip to the city. Every single item that landed on my table got snatched up and consumed with a quickness. I went with the namesake dish and I left happy; the papaya salad is also quite good. I highly recommend this place if you're a fan of Thai and other Southeast Asian flavors. read more

Absolutely love this place! It's taken over what used to be Sawaddee on Hope Street and I gotta tell you, what a nice change. Unfortunately, they didn't update the interior which could use an upgrade but the food is what we are here for. Street parking and the place is small, maybe 6-8 tables so might not be good for larger group dinners. The place boasts as a Lao/Thai restaurant but the owners are Laotion. Truly, I feel you can taste the love they put in their food. They had only been open for a week when we ventured in, we spent a good amount of time speaking with Peter, the owner - he gave us the rundown of his old location in Westerly and how this location was a better commute and the reason for the change. He runs the front of the house while his wife concocts the deliciousness that comes out of the kitchen. You can tell how proud and humble they are and it shows in the product they put forth. We had a plethora of dishes but my favorite was the chicken laab (Laotion chicken salad). Super tasty with perfect balance of salty, sweet and sour and the toasted rice powder was crunchier than I was used to, BUT I loved it! Gave it different textures and consistencies that I wasn't used to but definitely enjoyed. We could've gotten it spicier but wanted to go mild to get a feel for the food first as we know Lao people LOVE spicy! Everything was delicious and you can tell how fresh the ingredients are. And it's silly, but I appreciate that a side of sticky rice comes with your papaya salad, a lot of places charge you extra for it. It's the little things. I've been back once since our initial visit for quick takeout which I ordered the Tom Yum soup - wow! Probably one of the best Tom Yums I've had! We haven't had one bad thing from this place yet! I do notice quite a bit of takeout - I hope the place is here to stay. Do yourself a favor and throw out those Chinese takeout menus for one night and try something new. Found this little gem just off of Wickenden on the east side of Providence. I went with friends for lunch on two separate occasions and was really happy with both visits. It is small with no more byo option and, if it's cold out, keep your jacket on. But, what it lacks in radiant heat it makes up for in taste and charm. We had papaya salad (spicy), pad Thai, and chicken pho soup. All three were served quickly and tasted great. The papaya comes with sticky rice and if you haven't tried it but like a sweet and sour salad with a punch of Thai pepper, you should try it. The Thai restaurant we'd planned to eat at was closed randomly. We were still in the mood for Thai and this place had good reviews. The food was great! We were both happy with the Pad Thai. The menu section on stir fry was a little confusing- my mom had wanted the veggies from the basil stir fry but with a non spicy sauce, like garlic. The menu seemed like this was an option as it said pick your veggies or protein and pick a sauce or style. It was not though so she got pad Thai. It was a bit confusing when we came in as no one was there to greet or seat us and we didn't see any server to ask. I think it was just one server taking orders and bussing food. It is seat-yourself. The restaurant is small but cute inside with Thai and Laotian cuisine. I have not tried food from Laos but it looked really good. The restaurant was busy and lots of people were stopping in for take out. You kind of have to enter the kitchen to get to the bathroom. The server seemed too busy and in a hurry to take our orders vs answer questions about the menu. Still, if you want a large portion of yummy pad Thai, this is a good spot in a pretty neighborhood. This is authentic Lao food. Visiting Champa felt like I was eating at home. Very small but cozy. I ordered the Khao Soi - similar to Mee ka tee, another Lao curry noodle dish. The portion was huge and very filling. Asked for it a bit spicy to not make it overpower the flavors. I also tried their chicken satay, which was also a good shareable portion for two and delicious as well. Service was fast and friendly. Accessible, street parking but easy to find. Wouldn't go on a busy weekend as it is a mom-and-pop restaurant, so it'll take awhile for orders. I'd love to return back to try their papaya salad and other dishes! read more

I've mentioned in previous reviews that it takes quite a bit to earn a 5 star review from me. Champa certainly earned this one. As is customary for me, I tend to over order my first time at a place so I can try a variety of things and get a feel for the food. Usually some things are good, some ok and some I wouldn't bother getting again. At Champa, nothing I ordered wasn't a hit. The Brussel sprouts were the least amazing thing ordered and only because they weren't on the level of the other dishes. The shrimp shumai is house made and the best I've ever had, and I've had a lot. Certainly made me want to try their dumplings which are also house made, but that will be for next time. The papaya salad was delicious and fresh. The Laotian salad was excellent. The namesake dish Champa was savory and delicious. The Khao soi was a creamy, yellow curry blend that would make a cold day tolerable and your belly happy. They have 3 spice levels and I got 2 not wanting it to be too spicy to eat. I enjoy spicy and def could have gone with level 3. 2 was more medium to be but very tolerable. If you enjoy Lao/Thai or are interested in trying a new Asian place, I would not hesitate trying Champa. It was some of the best I've had and I'll be back for sure. read more

New Thai/Laotian restaurant on Hope street. The interior is somewhat small, has maybe only 6-8 tables and is outdated a bit. But the food is authentic and tastes homemade. It's a mom-and-pop restaurant. Got the namesake dish, Champa with chicken. It was quite savory and delicious but didn't find anything unique about it. I would want to try the Khao Soi next time. We ordered the papaya salad, chicken khao soi, beef drunken noodles and chicken egg noodle soup. The portions of each of the dishes were large and fairly priced at about 13-15 for each noodle dish. A winner! Went there for the first time last night for takeout. We got Khan Soi (because it's clearly a house favorite), the Tom-Kha Gai Soup, Fried Rice Laotian Style, and the tofu triangles. The Kahn Soi soup was amazing. I'm already craving that coconut milk and mild curry broth. The fried shallots on top were a great touch. My wife's Tom-Kha Gai was spot on and the tofu triangles, well, they were fried tofu triangles; they were fine. Definitely try this place. I'm going to have a hard time not getting the Kahn Soi every time now, but there's lots on the menu I want to try. I can't comment on the ambiance because my wife ran in to get the food. read more

We had a delicious meal at Champa! It's a very small place and kind of bright lights, but the food is authentic and delicious. We had roasted brussel sprouts and a noodle dish that were both good, but the shrimp shumai was outstanding. Little pillows of shrimp and dough with chicken on top, just scrumptous.
