    Atlantis Submarines Maui

I wanted to love this. The idea of descending into the deep off Maui sounds unforgettable. The…read morereality? About 125 feet down to look at a modest little reef, a few small fish, and a boat they sank years ago that's now wearing a coat of algae. That's the whole show. And "show" is the right word. A surprising amount of the experience is dedicated to a scripted performance between the "pilot" below and a "controller" up top, a steady stream of "roger this" and "roger that" theatrics that's clearly meant to manufacture drama. It doesn't add wonder. It just fills time, and after a while it feels less like an adventure and more like being talked at while you wait for something that never really arrives. For the price, the substance simply isn't there. You're paying premium money for a brief look at an underwhelming patch of seafloor, wrapped in a lot of manufactured atmosphere. If you genuinely want to see Maui's marine life, a decent snorkel trip will show you more color, more fish, and more magic for a fraction of the cost. Two stars instead of one only because the sub itself is clean and the staff are pleasant. But on value and the actual experience? This was hype over substance. I'd skip it and put the money toward something that delivers.

We did a similar experience in Catalina but that was more of a "submersible" that didn't submerge into the water and was more like riding in the bottom of a boat with windows. Atlantis is a "true" submarine that will take you down 130 ft into the water and is fully submersed. You start the day meeting at the wharf and then take a boat fast 30 minute board ride to the actual submarine thats parked out deeper in the water. On the way you get great views of Maui from the water and you get to go down a hatch to get into the sub, super cool. The submarine ride is about an hour, the best part is getting very close to sunken boat that was purposely placed there as a coral and marine life habitat. There will be numerous fish swimming about the boat and the sub rotates so you'll get good views of it no matter where you sit.

I didn't check the date to make sure to remind him because I got distracted with other lame stuff during our trip and we ended up missing it. Obviously our fault for missing our own damn booked reservation. Couples vacations are a nice testing ground on which to see what kind of planners you are and how well you can coordinate things together. I learned from our trip that if I don't pay attention to times and when things happen, we miss it. He couldn't get another time calling direct so I contacted them over Yelp and apologized after Sam, the owner, told me they were completely booked that weekend, we were set to fly out that Sunday. I messaged her over yelp and gave my number in case there were any changes because if not, we'd be out our money for 4 slots and wouldn't get to share this experience with our 2 kids on this trip, which put a damper on things. Sam texted me with an available time and made it happen. Grateful and relieved because the experience was great. Didn't see as much wildlife as we had wanted but still neat. Thanks for getting us in before our trip was over and hope the business is still going after the fires (we went before the fires happened). Not sure why the bad review; evidently by the other rave reviews this women-run business persists because they know how to run it. My son took a lot of pictures. I don't have anything to post because as it turns out, I get seasick, so the experience was more for everyone else in my party. Staff was very helpful and nice to me. The girls on board gave me ginger chews and allowed me to go back up on deck to alleviate the feeling in my stomach. Never experienced seasickness in my 20s. Word of advice, don't grow old, kids lol

The glass boat is taking passengers along the costal shore of Lahaina, and the ride is approximately one hour under the water, and the last twenty minutes you'll be allowed to get on the deck. The staff working here are all very friendly and patient. I've seen many colorful tropical fishes and a sea turtle on this ride. I would recommend this tour if you're not capable of snorkeling in the deep water, though there's a higher chance you'll see more ocean species if you go into the water yourself.

The boat also was not overbooked so there was plenty or room to sit and enjoy the views. The boat tour itself was amazing. The boat was clean, the crew were so welcoming, funny, accommodating. Service was great!! Also I did not expect there to be appetizers on the boat, but they were actually so delicious. We had chips and salsa, grilled shrimp, chicken quesadillas, potstickers and more. I just thought we were only getting cocktails, so I was very pleased.

We arrived at the center early and there is pay via app parking in the public lot and checked in for the morning brief before we boarded our boat, which was the Kai Ko, a sailing catamaran. Afterwards, the whole group walked down to the docks for boarding. The Kai Ko is a lot bigger than I expected, which was able to accommodate up to 130 people with seating for all on 3 decks. We sat at a bench with a table up forward, but you can sit on the covered upper deck under the sail boom behind the pilot house or on the lower deck with the snack bar. We had the best view forward, but it is exposed to the sun & sea spray. A couple of families sat in the cargo netting right above the waves. The Kai Ko does triple duty for whale watch excursions, as well as dinner cruises and snorkeling, so is equipped for all three trips. For whale watching, they only use the engine and do not raise the sails, which they do use for more relaxed dinner cruises. We motored out of the marina and out into Maalaea Bay and encountered a mother and baby Humpback whales almost immediately. Later we encountered another mother and calf that was also accompanied by an escort whale, which is rare. The mother showed her tail flukes on her last deep dive, which is used to identify the whale by their unique tail markings. You learn a lot of whale facts from the onboard guides. Later, one of the crew lowered a hydrophone in the water to record & broadcast Humpback whale songs over the ship's speakers, which was pretty cool. There were other whales that did full body breaches out of the water, but we were really far away. The whole whale watch cruise is 2 hours and returns you back to the docks exactly on the hour. It was an exciting excursion and we got back in time for lunch.

I would 100% recommend taking this trip while you are in Maui. It is an experience you will never forget. We started to trip with cinnamon rolls and they provided really great gluten free muffin for me. Then made sure to always provide GF food options for me throughout the day. Snorkeling was fun and accessible because they had prescription masks available, which is a must if you cannot/do not wear contacts and want actually see the ocean life. We had a plenty of time to float and observe the fish. Lunch was delish and they prepared some tasty gluten free noodles JUST for me. On the way back, one of our daughters helped hoist the sail and we were able to catch the wind of a bit. We also had the good fortune of observing a pod of Hawaiian spinner dolphins on the way to and back from Lana'i. Book this trip! It is SO worth it!!!
