I left it to the group to pick the place as I like to take a backseat to having to be the one who always picks. The group ended up picking Potbelly Sandwich Shop as we all hadn't been there before. This was perfect as it was also on my list of places to try out. I don't remember much from this visit but I will try and piece together what I do remember. There was something in the air as I was hungry but nothing at Potbelly ended up sounding like something I was craving. With that in mind, I did end up getting some chili, a bag of chips, and a soda for my meal. Not the entire full experience but since they do specialize in soups as well as other things, I think it counts as trying a place out. The chips were a national brand so those were as delicious as expected. The chili was your standard chili. A little better than normal but seeing as it was your basic chili without any special flavorings, it did it's job. If you look below, you will see a photo of Tim and I. In said photo, I look pissed or upset about something. Looks can be deceiving as this was not the case. Tim and I have known each other since pre-school and have butted heads a million times over the years. But when we butt heads, we do it in a comical way where its not serious. We get all huff-n-puff and argue with each other but it's more entertainment for us than actually arguing. I think maybe we've actually argued less than the number of fingers on our hand (figuring you have all your fingers). I decided to include it just as a fun glimpse at a side of my friendships that no one really gets to see. As for Potbelly, it's a nice place to eat. I would place it in the same class as Panera or Noodles and Company. An upscale subway, if you want to think of it like that. I've been wanting to go back as their menu does look appetizing and they have some sandwiches that are absolutely delicious looking. Funny enough, my sister and I almost came here for her birthday lunch but she ended up opting for Tequila's instead. Someday Potbelly, someday.

This place 520 has become our family breakfast on Saturday mornings when we visit. The place is always busy. Sometimes we gotta wait on a table but they usually move pretty quick. On thus trip I talked to the owner as I was paying and told him how good everything was and how far we drove and had to drive home. Oscar is his name and is a great guy. As I was paying he fiddled with the register and as he gave me my change he slipped me a gift card. I was kinda taken back a little and we talked a little more then I went back to the table to finish our coffee to get ready to leave. I got to say the staff here is spot on. Never did we want for anything. The food was great and coffee was delicious. So we pack up the kids and go out to the cars to transfer bags and luggage when I turn around and here comes Oscar the owner. Evidently I dropped the card he had given me. He came right out and we talked a little more to the point I feel we made new friends with each other. I totally recommend eating here. You won't be disappointed. Offering a nice selection of coffees and baked goods to choose from, you'll find something there that will tickle whatever it is you are craving. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the place just feels nice to be at. Between plenty of seating, free wifi, a large and varied coffee menu, board games (I think they still have them), it feels like a big chain place, but maintains that small town comfort. I have only had coffee here and wait... I usually try something new every time I go. I don't always love the new ones I pick but how could you not want Snickerdoodle coffee?! They offered quite some fun combinations of flavors for wild tasting coffees. Overall, a really nice and cozy coffee place. They have one of those 'stand alone' shacks also in Washington, so if you are in a rush, you can go there and stay in your car while getting some deliciousness in your belly. Definitely a recommended place if you love coffee and are in the Central Illinois area.

But I do remember chomping down my food and having to tell my mouth that there was indeed some food being consumed since there wasn't much flavor in my sandwich. I can't speak for my friends and I know asking them about their experience today would lead to a lot of "I don't remember"s. So, I am going to chalk it up to maybe having an off day there, either on my behalf or the chefs behalf. Either way, I won't forget the stench of my coat after we left. As soon as we got in my car to leave (it was just Tim and I in my car), I could instantly smell the reek of grease on my coat. It was fairly strong and made me gag a bit as I was taking Tim home. Once I got home, I instantly put my coat in the hamper for immediate cleaning. It's amazing that I don't remember what sandwich I ordered but the heavy grease smell on my coat is a memory that is clear as day. Second chances are something I believe in. You have probably experienced similar things. These coupon books have been incredibly helpful for me to discover local places while getting a good deal. I've seen offers for Alpha Bravo in just about every single one. Finally, a friend and I decided to try them out since we seen their coupons all the time. Advertising at work. We strolled in on a sunny and warm winter day with empty bellies and a coupon in hand. I think our deal was... Buy one entree, get one half off or free. Either way, it was a good deal in our eyes. As we walked in, we immediately noticed that the place was dedicated to military veterans. I think that is really cool. Both of us were hungry for burgers and the menu had some pretty good sounding options. The BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger was calling my name and that is was I got. My friend got just the Bacon Cheeseburger. We both got some fries to accompany our burgers. As we were sitting there and conversing, I noticed that the people there were giving us some weird side-eyes. Like, we weren't the regular people who visit and/or we weren't military vets and didn't belong there. That was kind of unsettling in a way. Luckily, our food didn't take too long to cook and be brought out to us. Excited to distract us from the strange looks by the people around us, we dug in as quick as we could. For the amount of delicious toppings on the burger, I couldn't fathom how each bite had no flavor. Somehow, they achieved the impossible. A tasteless burger. This was immensely disappointing as it looked amazing and smelled great. Luckily, the fries that came with it had some flavor. I got some queso to put on them and that was a delicious choice. With the weird glances from the other patrons and the bland burger, the meal was overall saved by the good fries, good conversation and the coupon deal we had. Should the opportunity arise, I would love to try the place again. The fact that they support veterans is really awesome in my book.
