We stumbled on Archie's hunting for an early dinner on the Quietside, about five minutes from the Wonderland trail, and it turned out to be a great find. It's a fisherman-owned shack right on the bay -- informal, friendly, and exactly the kind of unpretentious Maine spot you hope to run into. Honestly, everything we ordered was excellent, so it's hard to single out just one thing. The hot-butter lobster roll was soft, fresh, and generous -- better than the other lobster rolls we'd had on the trip (I paid a little extra for hot butter over the cold/mayo version and would do it again). The lobster empanadas were a nice surprise: crispy from being fried, and while there's some filler beyond the lobster, the meat-to-filling ratio is good and the added flavor works -- I'd order those again. The clam chowder was rich and creamy without being gluey. Bonus points for the kids: a Lego play table kept ours happily occupied, and they did simple cheese quesadillas the kids actually ate. I also had a Pulp Truck IPA from Marsh Island Brewing -- which is what we would call a "Hazy IPA" or "New England IPA" on the West Coast, but here is simply an IPA. Regardless, it was quite good. I think this was a fabulous stop..we were headed out of town and on a early August day with some overcast and grey menacing skies, we stopped so that I could devour a 3 lb lobster by myself..something that is easy for me to do. Lee had whole belly clams. Maybe it was an off hour, there were only a handful of other people there.. We come to MDI about every 3 to 5 years. This was the first time we stumbled across Archie's, it recently opened, and we love their outdoor setup along the ocean. When coming to this area you have a lot of lobster places to choose from. This one stands out with it's picnic style setup along with some magnificent ocean views. The typical lobster meal came with corn, bread, potato salad and your choice of size of lobster (price varies per market $$$). In general, it was around $20-$35 per meal based upon lobster weight. So we found this place driving around with our friends that wanted lobster. I wanted fish. I Ordered the fried haddock with onion rings. it was bad the fish was overcooked and hard and tasted bad. The onion rings were soggy and oily hated them. The lobster was reported to be excellent. Good job, the Shrimp basket was served with popcorn size shrimp ,not good don't get it. We stopped by Archie's during the shoulder season in early September. It was mid afternoon and there were few customers at the unusual time we stopped, but it was clear based on seating they get quite a crowd! The location is right on the water and it gives off a vibe that is laid back and suiting for a lobster pound. I ordered a lobster roll with butter and a side of fries. A bag of chips was also included. The cost for the lobster roll is rather steep and naked vs butter vs mayo pricing doesn't seem to make sense given the minimal cost per roll, but there was a generous amount of lobster for the size of the roll. The flavor was fairly mild, but it was clear it was fresh. The claws were of course a touch sweeter and packed more flavor. Overall, if you enjoy a lobster roll I recommend Archie's. read more

Super nice family run Lobster Pound - with Picnic tables outside on Bass Harbor. So laid back and glad we found. The staff was awesome and very attentive. SHOUT OUT TO Kacey. Stopped for dinner before heading to the lighthouse for the sunset. Got the fish n chips, lobster bisque and onion rings. Fish n chips were very good, with a larger serving of French fries. They don't make their own tartar sauce. Lobster bisque was some of the best I have ever had and came out scalding hot, which is a big plus in my book. Fantastic food. We had two hot Lobster rolls and a cold with Mayo, clam chowder and onion rings. Everything was superb. Crispy onion rings (the slivered kind which I like best). Clam chowder was great with tons of clams and a good amount of potatoes. The lobster rolls were gigantic. The biggest I have ever had and the same price as pretty much anyone else on the island this summer ($30). Great local beers offered (Lone Pine). So good! Our first butter lobster roll of the trip and it was perfect. The lobster was sweet and not chewy with tons of claw meat. Pretty large portion for the price, I thought. The lobster bisque was decadent might be the best bisque I've ever had. This place has great views and ample seating on picnic tables outside and a covered patio and a covered barn. I was happy to return after a delicious meal in 2021. The outdoor seating is lovely and we were able to bring our puppy. This year I got a hot buttered lobster roll packed with lobster and a side of corn. The corn was dried out, but it was only a half hour until closing so I guess that is why. Archie's was excellent in every way! We were greeted as we approached the counter and immediately felt welcomed. We ordered a hot lobster roll. The lobster was sautéed in butter and the roll was toasted. All perfect, with a lot of lobster meat! In addition to that, we selected lobster bisque, New England clam chowder and seasoned French fries. So many good things about this place, but I'll start with the staff -- really nice and super helpful. Fish and chips were very good; slaw was excellent, and the blueberry pie was the best we've had on this trip. Great location at the top of Bass Harbor with a view of the harbor going out to the sea and they've done a nice job sprucing up a quasi-industrial location. From the old photos at the order desk (don't forget to look down) it seems like the site used to be a sardine cannery; now they've put out a variety of seating options, -- picnic tables, outdoor dining sets, and a sofa and chairs on an outdoor rug. Lobster traps help shape the space, there's corn hole, and a mural of lupins on the side of one of the buildings. They've got a sheltered set up in case of rain; hope they can add heaters at some point for when it's chilly out. read more
