I just had a disappointing pizza experience at Area 4 (rated 4.4, one of the highest in the area). My sister even said she preferred dining hall food, and we both agreed that Domino's was better. The service was poor from the start. The waitress told us we would be seated at the bar. She rolled her eyes and appeared visibly annoyed when I asked if it was okay that my sister was under 21. She said it was fine as long as we didn't order drinks, then seated us at the bar. We were only given drink menus. When the bartender came over to take our order, I had to ask for a food menu myself. Our seating was also uncomfortable. We were placed right next to the bar/server station. My sister got splashed when drinks were being opened, and servers repeatedly bumped into her chair while passing. We ordered the Carnivore pizza. The pizza itself was quite salty. The dough was decent, but not impressive. I kept trying to convince myself it was good, but it fell short. Pizza: 3/5 Service: 2/5 Atmosphere: 3/5 Would I return? Come for the good pizza/food and reasonable prices, not for the ambiance - as you walk in, you feel like inside an MIT library.. no music, cold and quiet large space. We got some wine (no complaints, but also nothing special) and the anchovies pizza, which was good, yet on the saltier side, and very wet at the center (while try near the crust). Hawaiian Pizza (8/10): the bottom line is the A4 mozzarella is AMAZING. It tastes so freaking good; I'm not sure what makes it so unique. Should've asked the staff! That is really the highlight of all the pizzas. The pizza was a little too floppy and all the toppings fall off when you try to pick it up. Maybe that's only a problem with the Hawaiian. The pineapple and ham were decent. Salsa was pretty good. Service was excellent. The staff went above and beyond even though we were a large group out in the back patio. On the cafe side, you order at the counter and seat yourself at one of two long tables (well, a bunch of small tables pushed together). When it's cold out, the cafe gets pretty chilly whenever the door opens, which I found kind of uncomfortable. I kept my coat on. I ordered a drip coffee and an everything bagel with cream cheese. The bagel was your standard everything bagel - better than a Thomas grocery store bagel, but not as good as homemade. It was also toasted almost to the point of being burned, which I didn't love. Cream cheese came on the side. Coffee was ok. Not too bitter. I'd come back to try the pizza but for the cafe, I will pass. read more

I was initially confused when a friend suggested we grab breakfast at Area Four, which I mostly know as an excellent pizza place and bar. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the Area Four Cafe, as they call their morning operation. Buzzing with hip Kendall square workers, they have a full coffee bar and offer a solid range of breakfast options from oatmeal to breakfast sandwiches to gigantic and tasty pastries. I had the egg and cheese breakfast sandwich which was served on a house-made English muffin with the texture of a light fry-bread that was pillowy and delightful. Not super noisy or crowded, and there was pop music playing. Watermelon caprese salad was delicious! Wings were also great. Pizza is thicker and chewier than expected, but the burnt bubbles give the crust a bit of crunch back. Bacon was a hit with my party, the mushroom however was a bit too lemon forward surprisingly. Lots of choices for drinks, however desserts were kind of lacking (we were just told there was a slice of cake or brownie sundae and opted for the brownie). Service was really fast, but to be fair we did stop in at 8:30 so we were one of the last tables seated, and did feel a bit rushed as final call for the kitchen came in and we had basically just started eating our pizzas. I think now I understand why people stay away from anchovies. This was my first time eating anchovies on pizza through the white anchovy pizza. I was able to finish it all. It wasn't bad. I searched for top pizza lists in Boston, and have already tried the regulars - Reginas, Santarpios, etc. So this one sounded interesting plus it was in Cambridge near MIT. Took the venture on the red line from the city and quickly and safely I made my way to Area Four which is located in a cool area next to a Google Campus and some other businesses (translation - safe neighborhood to walk even at night). I quickly got seated at the bar which has the full menu. They have more than pizza (menu calls "Not Pizza") which includes wings, meatballs, mac-n-cheese and some salads. I got the seasonal pumpkin butternut squash soup and it was amazing (thick and tasty and the seeds on top provided a nice crunch texture - some squash soups are bland and get old, but this was great). Now on to the pizza, the wood fired and char (see my photo) made for a good fresh style pizza, the hot pepperoni was a good choice and I really enjoyed it. The rotating craft beer selection is really good here too, so if you are looking for some unique finds, you might want to check Untappd for latest offerings. Everything here, both pizza and non-pizza, is so yummy! I am obsessed with their shaved Brussel sprouts salad, which has the loveliest dressing and pairs well with more of the starchy offerings on their menu. In terms of pizza, the dough is really unique and (apparently fermented for 30 hours)! The smaller size pizza is probably enough for 2 people to share if you're also getting a side, or 1 really hungry person with a slice or two to take home. In terms of non-pizza entrees, their chicken pita dish is surprisingly bomb - I'd go back just to eat it. One thing to be aware of is that they are closed on Sundays. read more

Four is the right number of stars for this place - but not just because it's called A4. Though that certainly helps. It's an interesting thing ... a combined coffee and pizza shop. I don't usually think of the two things together. And sure enough ... I didn't actually HAVE both coffee and pizza. In fact, I had neither. But as a place to stop in for lunch, it's not half bad! The shape of the restaurant is a bit unusual with the coffee shop occupying one space and the "restaurant" occupying the other. They didn't seem to have much of a handle on how to seat us in the restaurant area or any idea how long it might take - but did offer seating at the high tops across from the bar. There were only two ... we took one of them. Now ... you have to understand ... I try to avoid pizza. Because when pizza shows up, it doesn't last long and it's hard to face what I've done. So I scoured the menu for something else and was pleased to find there were a bunch of other options. Wings, salads, soup, brunch "messes." Great choices. I ended up getting a "Warm Fall Grain Bowl." According to the menu it involves organic toasted spelt. I don't know what that is, but kinda like farro maybe? Honestly I was taken in by the mushrooms and bok choy, though the red onion and butternut squash were a nice add too. The menu said "raddichio" but it definitely just had radish in there... cut in half. Turns out they were pretty good - and I don't even like radish. Likewise the menu claimed cilantro but the overwhelming herb was dill. Now ... does any of this matter? Not really. It was REALLY GOOD. The place was clean, the staff was friendly, the food came quickly and was piping hot. If you're looking for a place to stop in for a good lunch, I don't think anyone will leave disappointed. read more

Amazing find right next to MIT! We came here for lunch on a weekend and it wasn't very busy so we were seated quickly. Our server was very nice and quick with ordering. The breakfast food we got was phenomenal! For being affordable, I think the portion sizes are pretty large and filling. The eggs were cooked very well, runny just like I like them. The hashbrowns were crispy and tasty, and the ham and bread under my egg was perfectly drenched in a delicious savory cream. Afterwards, we bought some pastries from their cafe (which has a separate entrance but is also accessible from inside the restaurant) and I definitely recommend the almond croissant, it was just sweet enough and a wonderful treat after brunch! Ordered lots of large pizzas to share as a group! The pizza was solid and has some interesting topping combinations. Service was great.
