OVERPRICED....I visited Arepa Pues yesterday for lunch after not visiting for some time and noticed some changes had been made. The first thing I noticed which didn't phase me was that they no longer have servers, you must walk up to the counter to order which didn't bother me. The reason I stated that is because if you are reducing the overall level of service so should the price of food. I ordered a plate, avocado and a drink and it came out to $23 which is insanely overpriced for Latin food. If you're going to charge that insane amount please make sure it's a full service restaurant and that I don't have to throw away my trash after the expensive bill. I came here on a Saturday afternoon. While they have more than just arepas on their menu, of course, I had to order an arepa! One arepa ($7) was surprisingly filling. Everything was nicely seasoned. I ordered La Rumbera (pork shoulder and cheddar cheese). I would've liked the cheese to be more melty and incorporated better with the pork, because the way they stuffed the arepa, they put the pork in first and then topped it with cheese. On the plus side, they gave a lot of cheese and it was like having two different arepas - one with pork and one with cheese - but sometimes a girl just wants one pork-and-cheese arepa, if you know what I mean. We also ordered the beef tostone and the plantain was nice and salty. The beef was a little on the tough side, but overall the dish was enjoyable and filling. It came with a spicy sauce on the side (which also goes nicely with the arepa). I liked the ambiance. They have artwork, flags, music, and a coordinating color scheme to add to the ambiance. Our waitress was attentive, provided excellent service, and gave us everything we needed. She even apologized when our tostone appetizer came out after the arepas. A+ service. Its all about that shredded beef here as the main ingredient with some cheese. We sure love the meat, but also love more things. It left us wanting some sweet plantain, avocado, or some other great toppings they have. #4 La Catira (4 NOMs) Don't melt the cheese, now that's the motto of this place as many arepas cheese is cold. At first, we thought it was a bit weird since its a hot dish, but don't knock it until you try it. You really get this sharp cheese flavor combined with grilled chicken breast and sauce together. #5 Perico (4 NOMs) Breakfast arepa is a breakfast of champions for lunch and dinner. Now, this egg lover's tummy is super excited. Lots of eggs, spices, onions, peppers, and tomatoes. Just love the fact you can taste the eggy goodness in every bite. Goes great with grilled corn tortilla, spicy and mild sauce. #6 La de Pernil (5 NOMs) Pork pork pork! La de Pernil quickly became one of our favorite orders because of all that pork shoulder goodness. It was so flavourful and tender that you might just orgasm in your mouth. Seasoned to perfection and combined with their special sauce, this makes for one great nomnom in every bite. #7 La Surenal (5 NOMs) Forget just one meat, go for two with grilled chicken and chorizo (pork sausage) with avocado and white cheese. One of our favorite arepa orders from this place. Its the two meat combination with avocado that makes it so good. Definitely a must for chorizo lovers! It also one very beautiful Arepa that just screams for you to eat it. #8 La Vegetarian (3 NOMs) There are arepas even for vegetarians here. After all, you always need to get your greens. It has way more toppings then meat version with tomatoes, lettuce, onions, peppers, and avocado. Sadly no cheese, but hey you can always add it for an extra cost. Not our favorite as their meats taste way better, but still, think this is a solid and good nomnom. #9 La Safrina (4 NOMs) Similar and yet different, this dish taste kind of like the #4 La Catira, but this one has different sauce and avocado. Avocado always makes things better and this was no exception. While it didn't wow us since we tried something very similar its a great way to enjoy more toppings without paying extra. Plus with more sauce and avocado it made for a more gooey arepa. #10 Pabellon (4 NOMs) We are making our way through their meaty things with Pabellon arepa, a shredded beef with large slices of sweet plantain. Plantain combined with meat always taste great. Its all about that different flavor combination. One of the more heavy dishes since they just pile all that meat on top. Oh, My!!! #11 La Rumbera (4 NOMs) You know you love your meaty meats like the roasted pork shoulder in La Rumbera arepa. It may contain only two ingredients, but there is enough pork for two toppings. We are big fans of big meat Well seasoned and very tender it makes for a great combination of cheddar cheese and spicy sauce. Build Your Own You don't have to just order from the menu and instead can build your very own ultimate Arepa. With so many different toppings you can come back and always create something new. Few toppings are not even included in the regular menu like Ham, Bacon, Fried Pork Rings, and so much more. Sweet Plantain (5 NOMs) There is more than just cheese in there. trust it. Even though it's fully drowning in cheese you can still taste the sweet plantain, avocado, and tofu. Together they make for great flavor and texture combination. You get this nice savory and sweet flavor combination. Sadly on our recent trip, we found out that they no longer serving tofu. The food is okay but it's not worth the absolutely horrible service!!! Good luck on getting your order fixed if they get it wrong. We ordered food to go and by the time we got home we noticed 1 of the orders was wrong and since it was late we couldn't go back to get it fixed because the restaurant had already closed. So I went the next day and told them what happened and showed them the food and they were absolutely rude and told me that it's not their fault and refused to fix my order. Since I don't eat that food I had to throw it away right in front of them. Waste of food and money. I've had experienced horrible service at this place several times and I still kept going back because I tried not to take it too personally but this was the last straw. My family and I will never go back again. I hope this was worth losing a long time customers! read more

Having just spent 10 days eating our way through Colombia, my boyfriend and I were in serious Colombian food withdrawal when we got back. Based on its stellar Yelp reviews, we decided to check out Arepa Pues one Friday night. We knew going in not to expect the same level of quality, taste, and price as Colombia, but we were pleasantly surprised at how on point Arepa Pues was! We started with the arepa basket, which came with four mini arepas overflowing with cheese! Delicious, especially with their spicy sauce. We also got the bandeja paisa and tamal. The bandeja paisa was originally eaten as breakfast by large men doing physical labor so that they had a whole day's worth of calories to get them through their intense day. Needless to say, it's a monster dish with chicharron, ground beef, chorizo, fried egg, rice, beans, avocado, arepa, and plantains. My only gripe is that our chicharron was a bit overcooked and hard to bite into. The tamal, on the other hand, was perfectly steamed and seasoned! The chicken hiding inside the tamal was super tender and fell right off the bone. I'll totally come back and try more of the arepas and soups! read more

Arepas Pues is a Gem. Small hole in the wall but man is the food delicious. I walked in wanting to try new food and tried the "bandera Pasia" upgraded the ground beef with the 5 ounce carne asada. Everything was well seasoned and delicious. The music isn't to loud and it's self serve which I prefer. Meaning you grab your own sauces, napkins, utensils, and water. The ONLY reason I am giving them 4 instead of 5 starts is because the pork was a little over cooked I prefer the chewier pork instead of the crunchy but that's just my preference. I was oscillating between giving this place a 3 or a 4--but I've decided that 4 star rating is appropriate and I'm going to tell you why... I should note that this is not my first go around with arepas, my first time having them was at Arepa Zone and then I went to Colombia last year and had yummy arepas there. I'm in a Meetup group and the organizer asked if I would be willing to host a lunch at Arepas Pues in honor of...Cinco de Mayo which makes total sense because arepas are Mexican food [insert sarcastic emoji here]. Anyway, I like arepas so I agreed. Food It seemed to be a mixed bag in terms of who like their meal and who didn't. I like my choices, which were: arepa de choclo and arepa de pabellon. The arepa de choclo is a sweet corn cake with bits of corn topped with queso de mano. The arepa de pabellon is shredded beef, black beans and plantains. I had this one in Colombia and while the one in Colombia was better, Arepas Pues' version comes in a close second. For my beverage, I tried the sugar cane juice with lime and it was very good. At first, I was a little unsure about it because it's dark in color but it was very refreshing and not overly sweet (probably due to the lime). Some of us were hoping for an alcoholic beverage but they don't have any. Not a big deal, it's just that it would have been nice to wash down my arepa with a cerveza! I was also hoping to see cachapas on the menu but no such luck. For those who like cachapas, I think your best bet would be the arepa de choclo. Some of the other guests tried the arepa basket (4 mini arepas with chicken, beef, pork and avocado) and everyone that chose that option was happy. There were two people that tried entrees (one person ordered the sobrebarriga en salsa and another person ordered the carne asada). The person who ordered the sobrebarriga en salsa was very pleased and didn't leave a rice grain behind. However, the lady that ordered the carne asada had to send it back because she said it was bitter (like the meat was burnt and they covered it with sauce). Someone ordered the shrimp and avocado arepa and said it was okay but kind of bland and not memorable. Lastly, someone ordered an arepa with pork chunks but said (and showed) how dry it was--not what you would expect from pork. Service I have no complaints about the service. Everyone at our table agreed that the staff at Arepas Pues can definitely provide good customer service. I made reservations for 11:30 am (not my idea) for 15 people and they were able to accommodate. When I got there, I had to change the count to 12 and that wasn't a problem. The manager (I assume) asked if we wanted to do separate checks--por supresto! A lot of places frown upon separate checks but it just makes things so much easier. She also told us that the gratuity is automatically added (most places don't tell you upfront like that. Our waiter did a good job especially since we all didn't get there at the same time and orders were placed at different times. Overall, I had a good time at Arepas Pues and the price is definitely right. I almost gave this place 3 stars because I was trying to factor in the opinion of others but this is my review, not theirs. I'm not in Silver Spring that much but I would go back if in the neighborhood. read more

Another gem found by chance! We stumbled onto Arepas Pues while visiting a different place and I'm so glad we did. I love arepas, both Colombian and Venezuelan ones. I was in between the sobre barriga and bandeja paisa, but settled for the latest. It was the original kind and it was pretty good. I really like Colombian beans, but this weren't my favorite. The ajiaco soup was good too and one of the arepas my son got "La Sureña". My wife is Colombian and she loved the Carimañolas as an appetizer. I will get the sobre barriga next time I go. We went on a weekend and they were very busy. It is a tiny place so no a lot of seating, but they try their best to accommodate everyone. Service was friendly, although they lack promptness. Although it does take some effort to get to, don't be detoured! The arepas here are made to order, the choices are endless. As a first timer, I asked the staff which one she would recommend for us. She initially asked us how hungry we were, luckily she did because they're quite filling. Each arepa was jam packed to spill at the brim, so if you're taking mouthfuls like me -- make sure you have a drink to help it all go down. My favorite between the three we ordered: La Pabellón, La Sureña, La Pelua has to be pabellón, many non points for flavor! The salty smokiness from the beef with sweet plantains is just right, all I'm missing is some crema to dip with each bite. Moreover, if you come for lunch on a weekday, you can order from the "executive lunch weekday specials," which come with your choice of lentil, chicken, or carrot soup. The chicken soup has flavorful broth with bits of potatoes​, corn, ​and tender shredded chicken. As for weekday special dishes, the ground beef Columbian style is an excellent choice. It is served with fried egg, rice, black or red beans, and sweet plantain. The dish looks amazing and it is also tasty. The egg, rice, beans, and plantain have the ​perfect texture. The lady was nice, she even changed my drink. Food did not take long to be served on the table. The food was not good. the yucas or cassavas were hard. The meat was tender but the salsa had a weird taste. I could not tell if there was a lot of tomato on it or it was old. like when you freeze your food for a long time and it started going bad. I wish I'd known to make a reservation on a Sunday but honestly it might not have made too much of a difference. In the hours I spent there waiting and finally dining they moved two different parties from their original table in order to push tables together and fit a larger group that came later. Just know it is a tiny spot and perhaps most of their business is carryout. If not busy and you're less than four people, seating shouldn't be an issue. The only reason we didn't leave is because we had already lost an hour waiting and it didn't seem possible to have to wait longer. Service is serviceable, you'll get what you need but no one was doing more than the minimum even after we got seated. More to the point, the food. Which I'd hoped would be redeeming but wasn't. I found out that they don't even make the arepas on the premises! At least, not the one that they ran out of before 6pm which was when we finally placed our order. After I was told it wouldn't be possible for them to make more because they brought the arepa con queso in frozen from somewhere else (I mean really??), I couldn't bring myself to ask about the rest of the menu. I mean I had waited way too long to eat and my last meal had been almost 7 hours earlier. Not sure if it really was just an off day for this place but the food was just ok, and I was hungry. Except the tajadas and tequeños were pretty good. Overall the arepas were not what I was expecting, somewhat bland and also thinner and drier than I expected. Didn't seem Venezuelan style but I don't pretend to be a connoisseur. I see now though that the menu includes Colombian food so that explains it except the dry part. Under seasoned and over priced. Came here for my brothers birthday from an hour away. They no longer come to your table, instead you have to walk up to the counter and order. This would be alright with me if the prices reflected a self-serve service. We ordered a picada and tajadas as well as 6 drinks. I asked the cashier if I need to grab the drinks from the fridge and she said that she would bring them to the table. 20 minutes later some of our drinks arrive, mine was still missing. The cashier was missing for another 15 minutes. When she came back with our appetizers, I reminded her kindly about my missing drink and we asked for small plates to share the appetizers. Another 15 went by and when she came back with the plates I said to her "I haven't received my drink in 30 minutes. They drinks are right in the fridge. We're the only customers in the store, it shouldn't take this long." She did not apologize and simply stated she's not a waitress. Other than the service (or lack thereof), the food was mediocre and too overpriced. The rice had NO flavor. The my sisters beans tasted sour and the shredded beef had no flavor. We had been wanting to try this spot since their grand opening. Arepas Pues has such great reviews and high Yelp rating, so we were surprised to see that they were so dead on a Friday evening. Especially when all the restaurants in the area were packed. The restaurant is on the smaller side. The dining room isn't very big and it isn't an open layout. There are two small areas with some tables. Not the best layout for a restaurant. It feels a little stuffy and doesn't seem very handicap accessible. We had... Fried Egg Arepa Baked Chicken, Egg & Cheese Arepa Carne Asada Entrée Arroz con Pollo Everything was decent. We weren't impressed. The best things were probably the Arepas. The main entrées weren't as good as we expected. The presentation was great. Portions were very generous. Prices were reasonable for the portion sizes. Service was good but a tad slow, especially for being not busy. Another table was seated a good 10 minutes after us but got all their food before us. We don't plan on coming back. Went over yesterday for diner and unfortunately did not experience anything like the wonders other people comment. You don't feel welcome there to begin with. A cold hello from a lady that was there, we sat a a table and were given menus and she said "When ready to order, come to the register to place your order", and turned away and left. Placed my order and paid, food came about 15 minute later, ajiaco de pollo was good, but the are pas were cold, dry and no much flavor. While eating my food, I had a clear view to the kitchen and noticed a male cook handling food with his bare hands, no gloves, even with all the alarming news about the coronavirus. At that very moment I could not eat any more and left. I would not go back to this place, neither will recommend it. No one said thank you, or good bye when I left. So sad, but very poor health practices and poor customer service. read more

This is a solid spot for real Colombian food. I took my Colombian family here a few days ago. They were missing their country's food, and even more so, fresh squeezed natural juices. For those of you that have never been to Colombia (like myself until recently) and grew up in the states, you might think all juice comes from concentrate. You might also have trouble naming more than a couple. Well in Colombia they have so many different types and it is all fresh. This restaurant has it all. Arepas Pues is AMAZING! The prices were very reasonable, service was great, & the food was absolutely delicious. We stayed in a hotel close-by & got food from here both days of our trip. We tried the arepas sampler, chicken & beef empanadas, and the tequenos. Everything tasted great, but especially the tequenos with the cilantro dip. If I'm ever back in Silver Spring for another concert, I will 100% stop in again. This place was one of the highlights of our trip. read more

This place changed and now is self serve type. The food is not as good as before and seems like the owner is trying to milk out the place by making tons more seating in this small space. I don't think I will be coming back. There is no privacy and you are on top of each other and delivery people coming in and out. Too bad! Also, the staff is changed as well.
