A good place pre-King Spa! I forgot how these BBQ places worked: you decide to have the BBQ and sit at a table with an open fire mini-pit (gas) and with the wait staff you cook your own meat. It is not the fastest place as others have noted but I found that this was not bothersome in line with the day (spa days are slow days) and isn't it perhaps a feature of non-American cultures to take time to eat? Anyways it didn't bother me this day. The full BBQ plates were intimidatingly expensive compared to the lunch specials, but then you get a huge spread of sides and soup as well, more than filling! A fun place for a slow-cook and chat with friends, trying something new. read more

4 stars for the regular menu and 2 stars for the bbq. The galbi marinated and unmarinated was pretty bad. Chewy and extremely fatty. I would recommend to skip the bbq. Their tabletop seafood casserole is quite good but pricey for the amount of seafood they add in. Best thing on the menu IMO is the soondubu (tofu stew) and yookejang (spicy beef and veggie soup). It's been a couple of years since our last visit and it's like a new restaurant! It's under new ownership and you can really tell. The food is fresh, inventive yet evocative of old traditions. Absolutely phenomenal. Their version of dolsot bibimbap (with purple rice) is alone worth making the trip, though we saw platters of mouthwatering K BBQ around us. The banchan was delicious and fresh. Our new fave K place in the Chicago area! The complimentary after-dinner sungnyung (scorched rice and barley water) and sikhye (sweet rice drink) was a beautiful way to end the meal. read more

I went during lunch on a weekday... We ordered the 'chadol' beef and it was the worst I've ever had. The beef was very tough and thick and the service was even worse. They kept forgetting to bring the rice and by the time it came the stew was already cold. It was very difficult trying to get the attention of our waitress and when I finally got eye contact, she would turn away quickly. Also, the egg that was supposed to be out with the other banchan came out right when we were about to leave.. Will never go back again. read more

Unfortunately, I'm going to bump down my generous 4-star review to 2 stars. I really should have given them 3 stars when I last reviewed them but I was blinded by convenience. So, what's driving this updated review, you ask? A horrible lack of consistency. For example, their mul naengmyun recipe has either gone through numerous changes or we got shafted with a bad batch. I've ordered it three times and got completely different styles. Sweet broth - blah. Rich meaty broth with chewy noodles - PERFECT! Watered down beef broth with stiff noodles - BLECH. Don't mess with my mul naengmyun! I'm all for change but it needs to be for the better. It'll take me awhile to start thinking of this place when I've got a taste for Korean food... read more

3.5 Stars I tried this place with my wife when we went grocery shopping the other day. I thought they had solid food in reasonable price. I had the spicy pork dish and my wife had some soup dish (don't remember exactly). The dishes were solid enough, the server was attentive and the side dish was good enough too. I guess it was a bit short for 4 star, but this is definitely an above average Korean place (I lived in Korea for 20 years and then lived in LA and near NYC, so I think I experienced the Korean food fairly well). read more

I wasn't impressed with this place. I read reviews on Time Out Chicago before trying it out and it was incomparable to what was mentioned in the article. The service sucks because the waitress never came back to refill our water despite them not being busy at 7 pm on a Friday night. I really needed water to wash down the plum wine that tasted like very sweet and thick cough medicine. I would not recommend that. The marinated and non-marinated kalbi were ok but I was disappointed in the variety of the banchan. I've definitely had better elsewhere and will not be coming back. read more

I went here with my girlfriend, who is 100% Korean, so my experience was definitely a good one. I may have felt differently if she wasn't with me, but because she was it was good. I say that because I'm still not intimately familiar with Korean food and it seemed like the wait staff weren't real fluent in English or just not too talkative. I gave them four stars because the food was pretty tasty and it wasn't too crowded or noisy, which was nice since we went on a Friday night around 8pm. They also have plenty of parking, which is a nice change from Korean joints in Chicago. The downside is, it was a little on the pricier side. Between my girlfriend and I it was $70. We ordered the marinated Kalbi, Panjeon (sp), one large Saki, and one large OB (Oriental Brewery 22 oz) beer. I won't knock them too much for that, though, only because I've found that Korean food rates up there with Japanese food and they just tend to be more expensive. I felt that this place was a good spot to kick back and relax. As I said before, it wasn't too crowded or noisy and I thought the food was tasty. My girlfriend has mostly good things to say about this place (the exception being the prices) and as a novice Korean food eater I thought it was very good. I'll definitely be going back! read more

3.5-4.0 - Food and Location Thankfully this place is closeby where I work and live. Great for quick lunch, great prices and good food. 2.5-3.0 - Service - meh, not so much. But they are under staffed since the dining traffic is not consistent from my observation. Yu Gae Jang (spicy beef, veggie noodle soup) Duk Mandu Gook (beef stock soup with rice dumplings and rice cakes - kinda like matzo ball soup but not) Bimimbop (rice, fried egg, beef, veggies, spicy sauce) Mandu (fried - dumpling appetizer), and Nang Myun (Cold buckwheat noodle soup in beef broth with veggies) You can't go wrong here at least for me. Well the shikgae (cold rice drink desert is not so great, fyi, i'll pass on that) Good side dishes - Banchan. Def coming here for my Korean fix that I don't get to enjoy like the "old days" grandma's cooking : ) Stop by H-Mart afterwards for some shopping and stop by King Sauna for some R&R. read more

Ahh Korean food. BBQ Korean food, so yummy. But the service at most Korean restaurants tends to be lacking if one isn't Korean. And judging by some of the previous reviewers, even being Korean won't improve the situation much. But I know what I am getting into when I end up at these places, so enough about the service. As is the usual case when we order Korean BBQ, it's all about the meat. The beef bulgogi tasted good. The marinate is not the best tasting one I've had, but the quality of the meat was quite good. The kalbi was okay, a bit chewy, but perhaps it's because it was left on the flame too long. And the pork bulgogi was awesome. Okay, so the waitress did the cooking for the pork. And it's probably a good thing she did as the pork met that fine line between being overcooked and a health hazard. The best part was the fatty portion that melted in my mouth. Yum! We also ordered a seafood casserole that met expectations. Nothing spectacular, but not bad either. With regard to the number of little side dishes that come with the meal, I've had more served, but because the focus was the meat, I'm glad we weren't served any more or else it would have gone to waste. And then the bill came. $40 a person. At first it seemed unreasonable, then we thought about how much food we had between three people and there was some leftovers for all three of us to take home. Plus a bottle of OB. Plus the waitress skillfully cooked our pork. Which wouldn't seem so bad until.... ...until you realize H-Mart is next door and if there is a sale going on, $40 can go a long way in that place regardless of what you get. Thankfully this is not grill season or else we would have felt ripped off. But for what we got it wasn't bad. But you can definitely do better. Pros: Waitress cooked the pork for us, decent sized portions, meat quality was good. Cons: Service (other than the cooking) is lax, servers are more attentive to Korean speaking regulars, pricey, more bang elsewhere. To sum it up: There are better places out there. Came in for a bite to eat and was asked if we wanted lunch or to grill. We didn't know. We were sat at a grill top table. We ended up not ordering anything to grill at the table. I got a beef bulgogi which I shared with my daughter. My husband got oxtail soup. He asked if they had fish sauce. They said no but told him he can bring it next time. They gave us a bowl to put some if the food into for our daughter. The customer service is very good. They are very nice and will gladly make help decide if you are having trouble deciding. I had 2 completely different experiences at this place. The first time we went we were completely ignored. It took 1/2 for us to order, because the waiter just kept on walking by and ignoring us. I distinctively had the feeling that the waiters were arguing amount themselves who would serve us, and none of them wanted to. Lunch took 1 1/2 hours with empty glasses at all times, and they were not busy at all. The second time we came for dinner, and the service was considerably better. Our food arrived quickly and were tasty, and we had good service throughout. I don't believe in restaurants that provide spotty or good service depends on the wait staff or time of the day. I have been required to go here several times due to family dinners. If it's your birthday, run away. They give cone party hats, play Korean birthday music, use ghetto poppers, and make everyone clap along while the restaurant stares at you. The food varies from bad to mediocre. The Kalbi is tough & chewy, the rest of the food is meh. Side dishes are almost non-existent in terms of portion size. Service is horrendous. Super slow (I'm almost positive it's deliberate), and save for 1 server, pretty rude. I had to grab our own napkins & utensils the last time I was there. Kalbi is better at San soo gab san, Cha dol bae ki is better at WooRi MaEul. I'd say don't even bother. I don't have the option. First actual korean bbq experience in this state, but we are DEFINITELY not coming back to this location. Food was okay but honestly a little pricey for 2 people with no soft drinks or appetizers. Waitress was a little pushy and hard to get our attention. But what was really off-putting was after we paid and LEFT the building, she RAN OUT AFTER US AND ASKED FOR A TIP while pointing to the credit charge in her hand, she asked me to rewrite it on. Who does that?! It was unbelievable, I don't know her work ethics but that's not how you go about getting tips. The octopus in my dish was so rubbery it was impossible to bite through. I had to leave the bigger pieces on the plate because it was like chewing on a dog's squeak toy. It was supposed to be spicy, but it was just hot, there was no flavor at all. We wont be back, when we want Korean we will head to Amitabul. read more

The only place I've found Dak Galbi in the Chicagoland area - one of my all-time favorite dishes! I wish they had charcoal grills, but the electric will do. You leave smelling a little better too. The side dishes are amazing, their kimchi is one of my favorites, and whenever you run out of side dishes, they refill them without having to ask for free! A major plus. Best kimchi chigae I've had outside of Korea - the broth is amazing because they use aged kimchi, which is the only way to do it!!! If you're interested in good service, don't eat at truly ethnic restaurants. It's not what they do. If you're interested in finding affordable, fresh, authentic Korean food, eat at Arirang. Your meal starts with hot brown rice tea and ends with rice water. What more can you ask for? Makes the trip to HMart worth it every time. read more

The service: great. The food: delicious. Only two ladies were there. Very quick services. food came out quickly, too. Variety of side dishes. I really liked that warm tea for cold weather. We didn't feel like BBQ so we ordered hot soft tofu stew, tonkatsu (real crispy..!), and some sort of white soup which had beef and cellophane noodles. Good amount too.. just right amount to finish for men. And instead of crappy fortune cookie in Chinese restaurant, they gave us Homemade Shik-Hye (Sweet Rice Drink).....what is this.....it was really good. I just casually walked in Arirang Garden after shopping at H mart right by it, bit worrying b/c of poor ratings on Yelp. It was also in the corner that looked a bit shady. I've tried this place twice and was disappointed each time. I don't know what's up with the place but if you go during the end of the night(around 1-2 hours before close) the service becomes pretty crappy. The first time, we got there probably 2 hours before closing and ordered some kalbi and some stews. The server seemed extremely annoyed to have another table to serve. I'm used to subpar service at Korean restaurants, but this was on another level. I don't even want to mention the way she spoke to us and the way she made us feel. The second time, we just wanted something quick to eat around the area so we gave it another try. We got there around 30-45 minutes before closing. The same server lady from before sat us at a table and handed us the menu. After looking through the menu for about a minute, she told us that the only thing we could order was the bibimbap(rice topped with side dishes). She said all the cooks left and all they could make was the bibimbap. What the heck! I just wanted a simple Korean soup or something. She told us to go to another restaurant, so we did. First time back in over a year's time. Service was very poor. There was ONE waitress taking care of the entire restaurant. The table adjoining ours was filled with dirty dishes and leftover food that remained there until we were almost done...certainly NOT very appetizing at all. I ordered an iced tea to drink and was given a watery warm green tea which I could not drink period. Finally had to order Coke in a can. Meats were very fatty. so...due to the unknown closure of kim's korean restaurant, i directed my friends to come meet me at arirang for lunch instead. i've been here before and it's located conveniently by h-mart so i thought maybe we can all kill two birds with one stone. eat and shop for more things to eat. why not. we ordered what we would've ordered at kim's korean (yes, i'm still upset). the pork belly was alright but i didn't like how they still left the cartilage in the meat. another negative is their dang jang jigae. it's weak as hell. if i wanted miso soup, i would've gone to a japanese restaurant. but i'm at a korean one and i want flavor!!! anyways, if you want food slightly better than food court standards this is the place. especially if you're shopping at h-mart and you get hungry. read more

Horrible place to eat. Service is something that they've never heard of. Can't request any sides. They gave lame excuses of being out what was requested. I was even told no to one side without an explanation. I wanted the heat on my grill higher but the waitress kept turning it down. Seemed like a tactic to make my group become more full with the small portions that they served. After this horrible service they were demanding a 15% tip. No where in the restaurant does it say that there is any type of tip required. They tried to calculate it for me a kept asking for it and I just refused. Wanted to warn people about the pitfalls if this restaurant, just in case you are thinking of dining out at this place. 1) The service was very slow. Had to wait a good 25 minutes before the food actually came out. Kind of felt bad for the waitor who tried to make up to us by refilling our cups of water which we kept drinking due to our hunger. We had ordered seol lung tang and oh sam bul and thought that maybe the meat was being cooked, hence the long wait. What we got almost a half and hour after we ordered was the seol lung tang and the ban chan. And then shortly after to our surprise was a pan of uncooked meats and vegetables of oh sam bul.We had to cook this meat ourselves which is important because... 2) The restaurant makes you pay a compulsatory 18% gratuity fee if you have a party of 5 or more. I went with my family of 5 and 3 out of the 5 parties were kids. They were not adults and should not be counted as a head. Furthermore, if they were doing extra service for us, I would understand the tip adding but there was no extra service provided for us which we deemed as ridiculous. 3) The restaurant makes you pay $1.50 for every extra bowl of rice you order. The problem with this was we were only given 3 bowls of rice even though we had a party of 5. How does this make sense? If they were going to give us only 3 bowls maybe they shouldn't have charged the group as a party of 5 and made us pay the compulsatory tip. Which is not to say, $1.50 should not be charged in the first place! I don't know if management has changed but when we were here a few years back, the bowls of rice were refilled without pay. It's like the unlimited bread sticks at a Italian restaurant! 4) The eating utensils had smudges. Enough said. All in all I would not recommend this place unless one wants an uncomfortable, unpleasant experience. read more

I chose this restaurant based on impulse and an unplanned trip to HMart. Surprisingly they have this dish that I have been searching since I started watching all these kdrama. The dish is called samgyetang basically cornish chicken stuffed in rice and herbs and boiled for a loooong time. Just a lil warning if you decide to order this dish order it ahead of time. This dish took 50min to 1 hr to make. I have nothing to compare it to but the soup is suppose to be quite healthy. The dish has a very clean taste. Mind you it does not have any salt so you might have to add some. I actually enjoyed the clear broth and juicy tender chicken. Not only was the dish pretty good the side dishes they gave me was pretty good as well. All have a very delicate taste to it and not too salty, spicy or too sweet. The only side dish I can leave without was the mashed potato salad. I also ordered the seafood pancake. It's okay not great I had it better elsewhere. I ordered a side of kimchi and ate it with the pancake. It was much better... masks the doughiness of the pancake . I want to try the rest of their soup though. Oh on a side note be more assertive in trying to get their attention. For a big restaurant they are not well staffed. read more

MOST AUTHENTIC SIDE DISHES IN CHICAGO. I lived in Korea for a few years and searched Korea town in Chicago for a good spot. This restaurant in Niles has the most authentic and tasty side dishes of the 15 Korean spots I've tried. Very good quality and preparation. Further, their menu is diverse. They cover all the basics, and very well. Their bulgogi is really great! They have dalkalbi (spicy chicken) which a lot of places don't have. They really do a good job keeping food authentic and quality. It is well worth the slightly higher prices (as compared to lesser quality places in Korea town). If you don't want to trek out of the city, try So Gong Dong TOFU HOUSE on Bryn Mawr for decent side dishes and quality bibimbap, but they don't have grilled foods. read more

The spicy tofu soup was very good. The kalbi tang was kinda bland, but the meat was very tender. The homemade mandu was very big, and tasty!!
