Lunch a few weeks ago while in Rome. We were invited off the street by the elderly man slicing porchetta to partake in the glorious samples of meats and cheeses of the Salumeria adjacent to the Pantheon, so we weren't that hungry. My daughter had the pasta Ameritriciana. It was very good, with generous pieces of guanciale. I had a squid dish that was supposed to have potatoes and tomatoes in it, although I can't say I found any. The squid was cut to resemble spaghetti ( a la Spiralizer). It was blatantly bland. When the waiter asked if I'd enjoyed it, I truthfully replied. He shrugged his shoulders and grunted "eh". The restaurant was full and many, without reservations, were turned away at the door. Service was adequate, but unwelcoming. My Italian taste buds are a critical lot, so I was duly unimpressed by this disappointing first lunch in Rome. read more

Two stars because I expected something pretty great, or at least very good. I got neither. First course - my choice - a truffle, bread and lard dish - and it was very good. If everything I ordered was like this - I'd give them 5 stars. But this wasn't the case. The waiter suggested a chickpea puree which turned out to be bland and unexceptional. (In Los Angeles Amici - corner of San Vicente and 26th in Santa Monica/Brentwood) hits a homerun with this dish - Armando - at best - was a base hit. That they recommended this makes me wonder - trying to rid of it?). The chicken in white wine and herbs was...simply bad. I regret not sending it back; WAY overcooked. Wow, great restaurant right next to the Pantheon. We had heard about this and read great reviews. Happy to have found this spot. Everything was good. We split the artichoke appetizer, they were so nice and plated two plates. I had as the starter the porcini mushroom pasta, was amazing. My main was the lamb chops, I asked for rare, but they were well done, still tasty though. My husband wanted just the simple spaghetti and garlic oil, delicious, his main was a chicken dish with prunes, very good. A really nice restaurant, in the heart of Rome, and didn't feel touristy. Excellent squid ink pasta. A bit of a cramped spot, but there is a lovely vegetable buffet in the back, and service is friendly if you greet it with a smile. Excellent pricing considering how close it is to the Pantheon. They have a seasonal barley soup that will set you straight if you are ailing and fill you up. Second time here. As soon as we booked our trip, I looked to book a table - it's that good. Quality of food is exceptional. It's the kind of place where you almost feel privileged to have a table as you see people being turned away for not having reserved throughout your meal. From looking at the tables around us I think you could do well ordering anything off the menu. The secret is out for this place so reservations are your best bet although we got lucky by waiting until 14.30 for lunch. We saw many folks turned away up until 15.00 when they stop accepting new lunch customers. This place is only steps from the Pantheon but sort of understated compared to the more touristy places. Execellent Michelin rated restaurant! Ambiance: quite small but that's typical for Italian places. They've got cute paintings on the wall as decor and small wet towelettes in the bathroom if you're so inclined to use them. We went for lunch and basically everyone there was an American tourist. Wait staff speak pretty fluent English. Service: a bit slow but to be fair they were slammed when we arrived since it was raining and no one wanted to leave. Be sure to make a reservation ahead of time as it fills up quick! They also randomly close sometimes in August (all over Rome) to take vacation so keep that in mind too. Food: amazing! Had the special of the day, fettuccine with porcini mushrooms. Pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. We chose to split the dish and though this portion was perfect for us it likely wouldn't do for most Americans (lol, it is what it is!). Also had a mixed salad which was slightly salty but still nothing to dock a point over. Wine list was extensive (think Cheesecake Factory menu style thick book) so we had to ask for help for a glass. Wow. What a disappointment. We arrived at 7. We were told there were no spots available for dinner so we waited to book a lunch reservation. Heaven we thought as we were told a party had canceled so we could have dinner. Ordered traditional Roman dishes. Pasta al Amatriciana and pasta al carbonara. Ordered veal saltimboca but waiter told us to get Oso Buco. All three entrees were bad. Over salted especially the Oso Buco which was more gristle than meat. My son makes better Carbonara. Service was poor and clearly full of themselves. Best thing I had was the gelato on the square after we left the restaurant. If this is the best Rome has to offer I suggest eating in Bologna instead. read more

I really wanted to like this place. The reviews on yelp were so good. Everyone commented/reviewed that it was their best meal here. I was greatly disappointed. Upon seating down we were asked if we wanted water. We had been ordering tap water throughout Europe now, knowing that a question for "still" or "sparkling" also meant at least a 4 euro charge. We were told that there was no tap water, and only still or sparkling...WTF. Really? You can just turn on the tap water and give me a glass of water. Great! The menu wasn't the greatest. We opted for spaghetti cabonara and a pasta dish with asparagus. They were about 10-14 euros each, so about $13-16 USD. The cabonara was more than al dente, and more undercooked than perfectly cooked. The other pasta was better, and had a consistency of Japanese ramen which was good. The asparagus was also cleaner tasting. The cabonara was good, but not amazing. I wasn't wowed by anything, or had that "wow this is what real pasta is supposed to take like" feeling. We actually really liked the bruschetta with quail egg and truffle and the bruschetta with lardo. There was a good amount of acid and salt to both. We also liked the grilled artichoke, but for a half piece for 6 euros is robbery. I wouldn't return. Maybe we ordered wrong? I tried the fresh Mozzarella for my Antipasti, Spaghetti ala Griscia for my first course, and Eggplant lasagna for my second course. The pasta was perfectly al dente... While not completely catering to tourists, I would summarize this restaurant as expensive, food of sub-par quality, with deceptive service. We made a reservation at this restaurant after reading about it on yelp and an online blog. Like the directions describe, it is literally on the street just off to the side of the pantheon. After reading the menu, we asked the waiter for his recommendation for dishes. He recommended the lentil soup, a grouper fish special of the day, and another dish which now eludes me. Later we would come to realize all his recommendations were the most expensive items on the menu. For appetizer we ordered a special of the day of anchovies in pasta, like a lasagna. Maybe I just don't know how to appreciate ahcnovies so I will refrain from commenting on it. For primo we ordered Spaghetti alla Carbonara. The pasta was way too hard, like it was hardly cooked. We also had barley soup with lentils which was good. For secondo, the grouper fish was mushy and fishy like it was boiled rather than baked. We skipped dessert after the disappointment of the pasta and mains. There was a cover charge and bread at every table. The bill came to almost 150 euros for 1 appetizer, 2 pasta, 1 soup, 3 secondo, and a glass of wine. Price was expensive, and quality was insufficient. read more

I dined here back in 2010 and decided to return while on a quick 4-night visit to Rome (15-19 Feb 2012). I started with the Bresola alla Ghiottana, thinly sliced meat on a bed of arugula and topped with cheese and olive oil (10 euros). For my entree I had the gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce (9.50 euros). Everything was very good. The gorgonzola sauce was just right, not too overly rich in cheese flavor. The gnocchi looked plain. Maybe a sprinkle of color (parsley?) would have made it more appetizing looking, but it was delicious. With my meal I had a 1/2 bottle of wine and still water. Total 33 euros. read more
