The food and beer selection speak for themselves, the Abbey really lives up to it's reputation for that. The bartenders are knowledgeable about everything and never hesitate to talk shop with you. The food is great and always interesting, by far the most creative and well put-together menu in Worcester. Unfortunately the Abbey has been voted best bar in the universe a couple times and it's clearly gone to their head's. Everything comes with a heaping plate of attitude. I swear the waitstaff are incapable of smiling. The aloofness thing gets old REALLY fast guys, act like you're glad to see the people who come in regularly some time! I had one waitress respond with complete disgust when we ordered "just the ONE pizza" (regardless of several rounds of drinks for 6 people), and it wasn't even busy. I really want to love this place and I did at first, but now I don't even want to go there because everyone is so rude. I can live without $20 grilled cheese, so I'll just stick with the Dive Bar for the same beer menu and the polar opposite vibe/service (ironically both establishments are owned by the same people). read more

I tried this place today with my Father and my boyfriend's family for Father's day. It was the first and last time. Let's start with the call that I got before I arrived at Armsby Abbey notifying me that they wouldn't be able to seat my party for my 11:30 reservation until noon because several parties had shown up late. Ok, fine, at that point I appreciated the call. They were busy when we arrived at noon. We were hungry and placed our food and drink order as soon as we could. About half of an hour later our waitress stopped by our table letting us know that our food should be out soon. That was great, because we were getting pretty hungry. Time went on, and still no food. Almost an hour after we placed our order we finally got our food. Not a single apology in sight. The family was not amused. We dug in. My boyfriend's Mom's breakfast pizza was burnt to a crisp on the bottom and the rest of the food was just ok. Not that the waitress would know, because she didn't come back to check how things were for quite some time (until we were done eating the burnt & so-so food). I get what they are trying to do here with the local and farm-fresh food and I think it is a fantastic idea. The problem is, it isn't working for them. All the positives I could say about Armsby have already been said - good food, great drink selection, neat atmosphere. However, I've gone there 4 times over the last two or three months, and I think it's finally arrived in the "over-priced, over-hyped" category. My reasoning is as follows: 1) Service - the last few times I've gone, the bartenders, hostess, and waitstaff act like they're doing you a favor by helping you. Not very friendly, especially considering how expensive this place is. It's a very cramped restaurant, so you're bound to accidentally run into an employee if you move around at all - it's not necessary for the staff to cut you dirty looks and huff at you if you get in their way. 2) Portions - I usually leave Armsby sufficiently full, but never have leftovers and always feel the portions were just adequate. Once again, for what you're spending to come here, it really feels like they skimp. 3) This might be a small thing, but it makes a huge difference - there's no way to move a tab from the bar to the table. Since they don't take reservations, you wind up waiting at the bar for your whole party to arrive. Then when people show up, you'd think moving to your table would be easy (like it is at EVERY other restaurant in Worcester). Instead, you have to track down a bartender and close out, just so you can sit at a table 5 feet away from where you were just standing. Very inconvenient. Even if your POS system doesn't let you transfer the tab, at least have the waitstaff bring your bill over and let you close it out while you're at your table. The hostess and bartenders were not helpful at all in helping me move from person at the bar to patron at the table. To me, this is very basic restaurant management, and is a clear example of how they won't do anything to help you while taking your hard earned cash. So my ultimate take is this: go there if its exactly what you want. There are a ton of restaurants in Worcester with fantastic beer selections (no Hill Farmstead) that will charge you less per beer, and not act pretentious when they serve you. The food? It's good, but have found the same type of "farmhouse food" elsewhere in Worcester where the portions are greater, the food just as tasty, and the costs more reasonable. Armsby definitely falls into the "Yuppie Hipster" category of restaurants. It's beer is great and the food is unique, but you also have to deal with an over-priced menu and (depending on how busy they are) potentially indifferent waitstaff. If it was a little cheaper, I wouldn't gripe - in my mind, once you cross into the $20 per entree category, there's some pretty basic service requirements that come with that... namely making your customers feel welcome. read more

I like how pretentious people like something just because it's over hyped. What is good about this place? The only thing I found was the space. Kinda small but inviting although the chairs weren't the most comfortable. Also, the lightning was nice. The cheapest drink you would find there costs $6 (beer) and tastes like I would imagine my toy poodle's urine to be. For a freaking grilled cheese expect to pay upwards of $8. The whole dynamic of this hipster paradise is just stupid. I do understand they source a good chunk of their ingredients from local farms but that to me does not excuse the prices. What a disappointment. I had been here once before and thought it was pretty good, so I told my husband we should go for lunch. The food took almost forty minutes, which I can see if we were having something that would warrant that amount of time, but pulled-pork? The pulled-pork should have been slow cook for hours before hand and ready to go - to imply that each order of pulled pork is cooked one at a time (as our waitress did) was foolish. The french fries were inedible - dark brown, limp and cold. If I could give this place 10 out of 10 stars I would. I cant begin to tell everyone who reads this just how perfectly well balanced, thought out and comfortable this place is to dine and/or drink at. I haven't written a review till now. Menu: The menu is simply laid out on a one sided menu sheet that's easy to read and with really great descriptions of the food that you just cant help but to have your mouth water. The menu here is unique for two reason. First they get all of their food from as much locally sourced and organic vendors as possible. I love this concept because not only do they support small business by doing so but in tern you do as well by dining there and in turn help out both the restaurant and the farms, etc. They always have whats in season incorporated into all the dishes from breakfast to dessert. I also really love how they tell where it comes from. This is great for people like me who love to support small business and know where there food comes from in this processed, hormone ridden food era we live in. The second reason is they change the menu up daily. I think this gives the restaurant some pizazz for not only the staff im sure but the customer most of all. When I go in every couple of week to a month, I can always expect something new, and innovative and not always get the same old boring dish. The Abbey serves everything from local meats and cheeses accompanied by local honey on a slate, to pulled pork sandwiches and beyond. I have been both from for breakfast, dinner and eaten dessert. Beer Menu: This is one of the few places I actually will have to have a separate beer section to chat about. You WILL NOT find a commercial beer, wine or spirit in this joint. no no no. Dont expect a Bud Light at all. This place is unique and one of kind for the Worcester and even New England area. They offer nothing but the finest beer from the USA to Europe and beyond as well as spirits and some wine offerings. Beer is the main feature though and they have a 8 plus page booklet of beers I had never even knew existed. I basically pick with a blind fold on and away I go. They offer everything from Dubbels, Ales, Stouts and more. I am amazed at all the special imported beers they have on tap too. I can choose from more then 30 plus beers that are not easy to find fresh from the keg. Amazing! They change them out regularly too so once again just like their food menu, beer pickings never get old either! Taste (main course): I cant talk about everything I have had here because that would take too long, (Check out my food blog to read more in depth) however I will say everything I have had from here has been phenomenal. The chef and kitchen staff have the magic hands of a god. Everything is always cooked to perfection and the creative spin on ingredients, odd combos of spices, flavors and the unique upscale twist on food is something out of this world especially for the Worcester area. They even offer items such as beef heart and tongue which I never had tried. Decided to get the tongue and ordered one more after the first order. It was that good. Whatever they are doing, they better keep doing, because its the right way! Price: Price for main courses range from $12 to $20, Starters/snacks/nibbles range from $3 to $12, desserts around $6. Beers from $9 to $100 ish. Thats right..$100. Most beers actually average around $12 but they even carry some rare, hard to find beers that are very very expensive. I love that concept and think its defiantly something they should keep doing. Cocktails around $6 to $12 and same with wine, although they dont do much by the glass and only offer a small selection. Breakfast about the same, $3 to $20 depending on what you get. Id say this place isnt somewhere you could afford to eat at 2 times a week, but defiantly once a week if you end up loving it. Its well worth the price though. Please do NOT let a $12 beer disappoint you from getting one. Trust me, you will love them. Service: Although I have seen from other reviewers that the service here was sub pare and not that great, all my experiences coming here have been the same and very pleasurable. I am always greeted with a smile, given a great seat and the service is always attentive and fast even when its very busy (which it pretty much always is). I think the one thing I am most impressed with is how knowledgeable the staff is on the food but the beer! Seriously...ask them about any of the beers on that giant menu and they will know all about it from color, taste, style, etc. I asked how they knew so much and the women said its an actual requirement to know all the beers very well. After a few hours of exploring Crompton Collective, my fiance and I headed over to Armsby Abbey for a late lunch. We were slightly disappointed to discover only brunch was served at 2:30 P.M. on a Saturday, however the amazing draft list kept us there. I am quite a beer enthusiast. And would say I'm rather knowledgable about beer and especially interested in the local craft scene. I was delighted to see the draft list featured Tree House Brewing, since its almost impossible to find in Boston. The waitress asked us if it was our first visit, to which we replied yes. She then proceeded to explain they "specialize in craft beer" and the locality of the beer/spirits/ingredients. I'm totally into all of this, I wouldn't be here if I wasn't. But lets lose some of the pretentious self definition and let the food and beer speak for itself. I ordered the beer I'd been seeking out, the Tree House Curiosity Four, to which the waitress quickly replied , "You know that's a double IPA, right?" Why yes I do, I spent the last few weeks researching the brewery. Thank you. Food was delicious. Mac and cheese was top notch. The ale soaked croutons sat on top of a perfectly cheesy mountain of shells like clouds. The house made sausage on the breakfast pizza was perfectly seasoned, even though the pizza was hard to cut. I live in a land (Somerville/Cambridge) of gastropubs/craft beer bars/farm to table restaurants/whatever you want to call them. Lose the pretentious, we're the only hipster craft beer place in the city of Worcester vibe, and you'd be amazing Armsby Abbey! I was so excited to check this place out. I've heard so many great things, unfortunately I was very disappointed. When we showed up at 8pm for a few drinks and some apps, the hostess seemed annoyed with us and stressed out. The atmosphere seemed great, I loved the beer board, the small gastropub type feel and the brickwork. Plus being close to other people allows you to meet a lot of other people. The menu seemed impressive! We ordered some cocktails which were excellent and placed an order for food, the bone marrow and the rillons. (pork belly) We were sitting at the plank in the middle of room, which was rather uncomfortable as other patrons leaned on my back to read the beer board. Not the restaurant's fault, but still bothersome so when we saw seats open at the bar, we moved to them immediately. We notified our bartender that we had moved since we ordered food and didn't want to mix things up. About 45 minutes later, no food had arrived, though we saw a plate of Rillons which we had ordered and hummus plate (which we did not order) come out. The couple next to us claimed the Rillons. The hummus plate went back to the kitchen as the waitress sighed and said "this night has just been awful!!" and leaves. After another 10 minutes, we asked the bartender about our food. He looked it up and said there was a mix up and told us it would be expedited and on the house. We waited for another 20 minutes and again, a hummus plate and rillons showed up. We figured, forget it, we'll just eat it since we were starving. The rillons were decent, a little overcooked/over charred, but still good. The hummus was also alright. I enjoyed the argula salad served with it and the homemade pita bread. We both enjoyed 2 cocktails each there the lavender fields, the ginger whiskey cocktail and a glass of wine were all excellent, but we were left multiple times with an empty glass for over 20 minutes at the bar, even when we placed the glass near the edge of the bar. At the end of the night, the place was only half full as it was almost 10pm. We asked for the bill, which came to us 10 minutes later. I put my card down and the bartender saw it as he was cleaning and chatting with other staff, but it took almost 20 minutes for him to swipe my card though there was only 5 people remaining at the bar. We finally left at around 10:30. I will most likely not return and would not recommend this place. Despite it's unique menu, beers, and great atmosphere, waiting for 2.5 hours for 2 apps and 4 drinks on a Saturday evening is unacceptable. read more

I don't get this place. We went here once and we tried to order a couple of beers and some dishes. Our first two choices were all sold out, and even certain plates we wanted weren't available. I respect that they use local ingredients to create their artisinal offerings, but frankly there was nothing appealing for us to try since we had to keep going down on our list of items to order. Fantastic. This is the sort of surprisingly cool place you hope to discover up in Vermont or Portland, Maine...except it's in downtown Worcester. On a frigid, blustery winter's evening, it was a warm, dark, cozy oasis of comfort food and amazing beer. If you're a craft beer fan, no doubt you've heard they're the only place in the state to find Hill Farmstead, and indeed, they had four offerings from that brewery (I got the flight so I could try all of them). But the food was just as impressive. We had a great cheese plate, some of the best chili I've ever enjoyed, delicious pork habanero tacos (not as spicy as they sound), and their famous-for-a-reason mac and cheese. No wonder I know a few people who drive all the way from Hartford to eat and drink here. Keep up the good work, Armsby Abbey! read more

This is the best place in Massachusetts by far if you enjoy eating well crafted meals and drinking amazing beer. The food combinations are creative and unique and change on a weekly basis so you never run out of amazing things to try here. The beer selection includes local and regional selections, many of which are hard to find anywhere else. These include Hill Farmstead and the ocasional selection from Tree House. For those yelpers/all around-reviewers of the Armsby Abbey I would like to point something out right off the bat before beginning my own review...The kind of establishment that this place is is not your typical chain TGI Friday's pub style joint (not that there is anything wrong with that) where the point is getting you in and out the door in record time with pre-made frozen food and cheap beer in your stomachs. I mean honestly, before anyone can make an ignorant comment about anywhere that they might eat, take in your surroundings a little more intelligently. Right outside the door of 144 Main Street along with a light-hearted but reasonable dress-code standards and the hours of operation is a certified stamping of the Abbey as a SLOW food establishment. What is this you ask? Well, it's a movement that "aims to be everything fast food is NOT" (USA Today). Wake up, people! Walking into the Abbey, you absolutely cannot expect that you will be in and out in a half an hour, nor is the Abbey claiming that that will be the case if you so desired either. It is meant to be an experience to ENJOY, with locally sourced food, American craft and Belgian beer, and handmade artisan spirits. Real care and heart goes into creating the menu items, and it's incredibly apparent. The staff is trained extensively in order to be able to relay information about (almost) every single menu item and be equipped enough to make smart and appropriate recommendations. As mentioned before, the food is fresh and local, not nuked and thrown together, so be patient, it's worth it. The beer? Incredible selection, both bottle and draughts. If you have a question, don't hesitate two seconds to ask! The staff is more than willing to answer anything and believe it or not, have a good time with you. And cocktails? If you get a chance, take a look at the pictures posted on the Abbey's Facebook page or website. They are made with care and well-thought out, so again, be patient. It is well worth it! For those who are not accustomed to the whole craft beer thing but are willing to try, swing down to the Armsby Abbey (don't forget brunch too!). It will be a learning, but very enjoyable experience. P.S. As far as anything "jerk" on the menu goes, again, read everything put in front of you. The jerk pork/chicken/what have you happens to be my favorite menu item, but like the menu states: it is a TRUE Jamaican jerk sauce and is therefore, kinda spicy! It says it right there in front of you, so if you don't think you can handle it, don't complain about it. However, if you're looking for a hot and swift kick in the ass that happens to be extremely delicious, go for it. :) read more

The food is very good here and the farm to table is also an added plus. Yesterday I called to place a phone order and was almost refused. I was asked to go to their website and order. My order was reluctantly taken because I new what I wanted and had payment ready. During these times wouldn't you be happy to get business and not refuse it? The service needs improvement. Sept 8th, the shift manager that night, Joy, was incredibly rude and stated several insensitive comments about the appearance of the clientele while she was on expo. At one point she called the couple sitting next to me "grungy" which was ridiculous because we all had better hair than her. She spent the majority of her shift complaining to the staff about how she couldn't wait for people like us to leave. Then to top it off I watched her pour a measly low abv half way into a pint (with no head) and stop the pour mid way through and neglected to top off the poorly carbonated beverage for nearly 7 minutes, until the actual bartender (who was fantastic, a model of excellence) asked me why I looked so bewildered. Overall the menu is excellent and I never let discrimination get the better of me so I'll be back. Please don't treat me like a piece of garbage because I have long hair. I often invest into bringing touring acts into Worcester from around the USA, Canada, and Europe but I won't recommend anyone with long hair to the Abbey, since their staff apparently has a vendetta against us freethinking individuals. read more

The beer selection is great and the staff is - generally - very knowledgeable and helpful. Menu selections could use more frequent refreshing. Last time we visited, we sat ourselves as invited by the sign at the entrance. Shortly after, a staff member arrived and asked if we were having dinner. When we hesitated as we truly weren't sure, she informed us that the seating in the back of the bar was only for customers who order food. She was not especially nice about it either. I'm not a beer connoisseur by any means... the only kind I drink is lambic. That being said, I'm only commenting on the food/overall experience. It's been crowded during the majority of our visits, which is a good sign. I like the vibe of the place, kind of rustic and low key. We've had the mac and cheese and the pulled pork sandwich, which were excellent. However, it feels like it takes forever to get our food. The first time I thought it was cause it was really busy, but another occasion when it was less busy the food came out possibly even later. It's not a place to go when you're starving. If I could give half ratings, it would be more like a 3.5 instead of a 3. Even though the food is worth a 4, I have to deduct one for the wait time to eat it. read more

HIDDEN GEM IN WORCESTER! I've have been once before for dinner and I remember it was good. Now that I have been back, this time for lunch, it was great! A cozy little spot on Main Street in Worcester. My friend and I went for lunch and was greeted by our server who said to seat ourselves. We sat down and he came over asking if we wanted drinks and of course, I asked for a reccommedation for a beer. I explained what I wanted and he suggested a beer from Allagash and it was exactly what I asked for, delicious! My friend and I both ordered sandwhiches which came out quickly and were amazing! For $12 we got homemade sandwhiches with local ingredients which makes it even better. Our server was very knowledgeable and friendly. I would be happy to try this place again and will definitely be recommending it to my friends! read more

Attended dinner at Armsby for NYE, they had a reservation only beer dinner at an affordable 40$ a head. As I am a vegetarian I called ahead and asked the menu, they happily had an option for me! I think it is important to note, this place is a BEER BAR. When I say this I mean- don't expect a ginormous table with fine linens- but DO expect prompt service and delectable food. My first course was a citrus Belgian endive salad with a homemade vinaigrette topped with macadamia nuts and local cheddar. Very nice. My husband chose the acorn squash soup which I found nutty but could have used a bit more salt. The main course for me was not as impressive as I had hoped, a potato, chickpea, kale dish that was very dry. The more I ate it, the more I got used to the rich buttery flavor, but I would have enjoyed it more if it had been moist. My husband ordered a Flemish style beef stew. Beautifully plated, the stew was chock full of grass fed beef and veggies. Adorned with bacon and a small roll he ate every bite. A waitress passed fresh baguette to all patrons and later came over with a ' gift from the chef' a piece of baguette with a locally made soft cheese and floral honey. A very nice touch. Each course was served with an accompanying beer that had been used in the cooking. I am not a beer fanatic, but some of the beers were divine. My ONLY disappointment of the evening was the fact that on NYE they did not have any sparkling wine or champagne by the glass. I asked the waitress for the wine menu and it had an extensive list of local bottles, but barely any served by the glass. I guess this is what I get for going to a beer bar. Nonetheless, I was thrilled with dessert. Dessert was literally the best chocolate cake I have ever had. Moist and fluffy, not too dense but meaty this culinary perfection melted in your mouth. Served with homemade whipped cream and warm chocolate I will never again order cake from another restaurant. We left full bellied and happy. The regular menu is teeming with ripe cheeses, burgers and comfort food. We shall return. read more

Everything was amazing. The curry soup, the poutine fries, the pork sandwich and the beer. Huge beer selection, boyfriend had some sought after IPA'S while I sipped on a couple sours and headed over to the Cider Mill fall cocktail that was delicious.
