I have been coming to Armstrong for a few years now and they are fabulous. The staff is helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. 2014 is my first real season gardening and taking it seriously, so the staff's recommendations and insight have been paramount in my garden's health and longevity. It's a nice clean place, and good variety of plants, but the tall young man playing with his phone at the cash registered is bad person. He marked up the price from the clearly state price on the plant. He didn't even give me a receipt, I had to ask him for the receipt because I want to the the price he put on there. So I asked him how come you input this amount when the sticker on the plant is this. He said "oh, let me fix that for you." I don't know what the heck did he typed in the registered but he gave me the back the overcharged money, but did not give me the new receipt for the corrected price. I hope this young man is not doing this kind of thing daily when people are not paying attentions. If he mistakenly did it then I hope next time he is more careful, but if he did this on purpose, stealing money from his customers and his company then I hope he gets his punishment. read more

I don't ever write reviews but I have to say our trip to Armstrong's today needs one. Brian helped us out and he was one of the most friendly helpful people I have ever encountered. He even offered us donuts! He was so pleasant that I find myself wanting to go back and buy more flowers and plants that I don't need. All in all it was a trip that would have taken us hours but because of Brian's wealth of knowledge he had us set up with a beautiful array of plants and flowers in under 30 minutes. Hector was very helpful. I am a new gardener and lets say I accidentally killed some plants I bought. Hector was nice enough to go in detail what the plants I bought need and from pictures I took he told me what most likely went wrong. I appreciated the time he took and he even exchanged a couple of the plants as a one time thing. Happy to say with his advice the plants I got are still thriving! I went in here yesterday for what I had hoped would be a quick visit. Little did I know that the young girl who worked there would spend close to what seemed to be an hour telling me all about her personal life and not anything about plants or anything relevant at all. I started to walk away at one point and she seriously followed me. It is a shame that her managers condone this type of behavior. This doesn't speak highly of them. She even ignored 2 other customers because she was to busy telling me her sob story. She needs a therapist or something and I am not one, and even if I was, I wouldn't be able to help this one out. Great place to go if you want to be followed by employees and learn ever detail of their personal life. Until she no longer works here I will not be paying another visit to this Armstrong. read more

I walked around and purchased some plants and asked if some one could help me find an olive tree. They said no and asked for my phone number. No one called. He helped me with a variety of questions about vegetable gardening, what organic products to use, and how to select healthy plants. I like the way it feels, seems very organized, the staff is extremely helpful, and they have a really, really nice selection. It appears they take very good care of the plants and displays. I get most of my plants at Armstrong Garden Centers. Very knowledgeable salespeople, fast checkout, help to your car if you need it. If you go to any Armstrong, sign up for their frequent buyer program. It's not called that, but they'll know what you mean. They'll send you email coupons each week and you can save lots of moola this way. I buy all of my potted plants and flowers with a coupon. They also have a great selection of seasonal veggies and fruits, too. The only drawback for my non-five-star rating is that larger items (shrubs, small trees) can be kind of pricey. But you can't beat Armstrong for bedding plants and vegetables. read more

I had some trees and planters picked out and was in line to check out, but stepped away to get some compost As I am approaching my cart, Ed happened to be walking by and started to wrap the temp plastic tree planters in plastic bags so that dirt did not get all over my car. Out in the streets, they call it murder.. plant murder, that is.. I have a reputation for accidentally killing every green roommate I had over the past.. decades?!? But I did feel like I was ready to take the next step in adulthood and commit.. to a plant.. Armstrong Garden Canter has an amazing selection of plants claiming they'll survive the hell they are being brought into. I had purchased a Groupon for Armstrong a while back that ended up expiring. And as we all know with Groupon, upon expiration, the vendor is still supposed to honor the original value used to purchase the Groupon. I think my Groupon expired a LONG time ago, maybe 2011. Anyway, I called this location asking if I could use my Groupon. It's really a simple question - if it's a no, then I'll contact Groupon and get a refund. If yes, then I'll stop by and pick something up. Instead, some old lady who picked up the phone decided to give me a really hard time about my Groupon. She reiterated that it's SO old, and there's NO way they could figure out how to use the machine to process my Groupon. She chastised me for not coming in sooner, asking me why I had waited so long, saying how there's not way they can help me. I don't know what it was... I think she could have delivered the same information in a much more professional, and cordial way. Instead, she chose to give and attitude, and be a b*tch about it, which I find odd. Realistically, I should have gotten her name down and complained to the HQ. Now it's a bit late so whatevers. Anyway, I did end up calling the La Habra branch and they were so warm and enthusiastic with, "Of course we can!" Even when I came and the guy was worried he didn't know how to process the old Groupon, never once gave me crap about it, never once had a "can not" attitude. Yes, professionalism means you don't patronize your customers. I have a feeling the lady I dealt with is the same one in someone else's review about a scolding manager or another one who said there's an unfriendly older lady... Sounds about right. I'd generally just avoid this location altogether just in case you run into the same old lady. read more

My husband and I arrived late in the afternoon after feeling quite discouraged from Home Depot and their lack of quality plants. AJ greeted us and she was a breath of fresh air! Her expertise and love of gardening shined through. She was friendly, courteous, professional and very, very helpful. I have been to Armstong in the past and I always enjoyed going, however this last trip was a disappointment. I had a terrible time locating the different types of roses. The placards that use to identify each rose are very few and the roses in the back are all mixed up and not poperly organized. I hope they make it easier because I always loved going there. read more

I've been to a few Armstrong's lately since the hubby and I are nesting in our new abode. I have always found the employees particularly helpful here. They check on you if you need help and give you space if you are just perusing. There is always plenty of aisle space, selections and ample parking. Some other nurseries I've gone to in LA are super tight and I am always worried I might bump into something. They'll also help you if you need ideas on plants or trees. This was great for me since I am a novice gardener and can use all the help I can get! :) read more

We just got home with our Christmas tree and I was very impressed with the service we just received. We picked our tree and they wrapped it up nicely and the two guys helping us even brought it to our car and made sure it was secure. We recently had Armstrong Garden do a complete landscaping remodel on our back yard. Gary from Armstrong and Jeff Tolly from Tolly Landscaping came up with a beautiful design that took into account our needs. The planting and hardscape changes went very smoothly. Everything was right on schedule, and they were always willing to make the changes we wanted as the project progressed. The whole project stayed on budget, on schedule, and came out looking beautiful in the end. As part of our due diligence, we got a second quote from another local garden center, and their design was way more expensive, not nearly as nice, and they were not nearly as responsive as Gary and Jeff were. I would highly recommend them for any landscaping project. read more

My daughter is 4 now and I decided to start doing some gardening with her for the very first time... I got very excited about the idea of us going to pick out plants and soil together and learn a little and Armstrong was the place I decided to go after I picked my daughter up from preK last week. The first 5 minutes were magical and it was so exciting to look at all the beautiful plants and flowers... It was great until I needed some help. I couldn't get anyone, not one of the 5 employees came up and asked if I needed help even when I made eye contact with them. This brunette older woman was particularly unfriendly. And while she was informative, the miserable look on her face ruined it for me. Wouldn't even crack the smallest smile. It was odd. I added on a star because the man that rang me up was extremely friendly and helpful :) I wish I remembered his name. I'll be back because I live close by and the selection is vast. But I'll steer clear of that woman. read more

STAY AWAY. I spent $130.00 on a Fiddley Fig and it turned black and died within 60 days. They told me they do not honor any sort of returns for house plants. Home Depot will exchange any plant up to 12 months. I will never set foot in this store again. Horrible customer service. Hard to believe a company this big is so inept. First time here today (7-7-13 around 3 pm) and had an unpleasant experience with the lady behind the counter. I had a question on which plants are bug/insect repellent and asked the lady which ones can she recommend. All she said was, "I don't know, i don't know. I've never heard of a bug repellent plant. You can ask Pedro but we've never heard of anything like that. We have incense and candles but plants, i have no idea." After her repetitive "I don't knows," I asked her again, who can help me then? She said, "Ask Pedro but he's busy." So I said never mind. I'll just walk around outside and find out myself. The elderly gardener helped me out and suggested to try rosemary or lavender which I later figured were insect repellent plants indeed. I wanted so much to purchase the rosemary but was in such a bad mood that i decided to try another time. read more
