This place is a joke. They had a little 18" citrus tree marked at $75, and it was nearing death. It was tiny, lost most of its leaves, under-fertilized and bug eaten. I took it to the counter and told them if they discounted the sick tree I'd buy it and nurse it back to health. The 3 women standing there looked at me like I was crazy. The one woman said, "we won't discount it, but we'll sell you the fertilizer and insecticide needed to nurse it back to health." I went to Lowes and purchased a healthy tree of the same variety, three times the size, and it was half the price. Do yourself a favor. Go to Lowes or Home Depot and get healthier versions of the same plants, for a fraction of the price. read more

Just had the nicest experience with Brandon at the La Canada Armstrong, I was looking for to fill a flower bed in my backyard fairlly. He asked me all the right questions how much sun etc the if I had a pool which I do (hadn't even thought about that) and recommended flowers that don't attract bees. He lookup each plant/flower that I liked and when I was done paying he carried them out to my car. He was a delightful young man, I would recommend him and this business highly! read more

The reason for bad review is because I bought 2 citrus trees in 15 gal pots for $400 ($200 each)... ...and when I replanted them at home, I discovered their root systems were from a small 5 gal pot with a lot of loose dirt around the root ball. So someone recently repotted 5 gal plants into 15 gal pots to rip off customers with the big 15 gal price. My gardeners who were helping me plant the trees were laughing when they saw this. Wow. I have been looking for giant tall 3 feet tall Marigolds . They are Magnificent but very difficult to find . I asked Jonathan , the manager, to keep an eye on them if any vendor has them . He was super professional and diligent and after few orders he found me these beautiful but hard to find giant Marigolds. He called me personally few times and made sure I get my order . I have been shopping at La Cañada location since last year instead of the near by stores because of the wonderful variations and quality of flowers they have been bringing in . My family and I have been going to Armstrong ever since I was a kid. We love looking around outside at all the different garden decorations, plants, and flowers. It's a great place to take the family to browse and come home with something to plant together. There are a wide variety of plants here and the quality of them is good. We are away from California right now, so today I had the pleasure of dealing with Cyan over the phone. Our friends lost a loved one and we wanted to send a succulent arrangement to their house. Jonathan at Armstrong sent me photos over email so I could see some different options. After selecting a beautiful arrangement, Cyan went above and beyond to write a small note for the family on our behalf. This kind gesture by Cyan meant so much to our family and shows what a good hearted character Armstrong has on their team. We paid a delivery fee of 30 bucks to have the arrangement delivered within a three hour time frame. The arrangement itself is beautiful, but the thoughtfulness of Cyan was even more beautiful. Don't even BOTHER putting in a custom order at the La Canada Armstrong. We placed an order, we're told it would take 2-3 weeks for the plants to come in. After 4+ weeks I called to check where they were and they didn't know - they told me an order specialist would call me back. Of course, no one called me back. So a couple weeks later I go to ask in person. First, they can't find my order. Then a manager came over, found my order and said most likely we wont get the plants this year. That's GREAT to know after I've waited 2 months for the plants I was expecting to receive. They said they would call the supplier and give me a call with an update. I never received that call. So - terrible customer service and nothing to show for my order. read more

This is my favorite review in a while because I had never visited armstrong gardens before and assumed they would be over priced, but they are not! Their flowers are also superior to the batch I bought at Lowe's. The quality is completely different. Their knowledge & service is unmatched! But the most incredible thing is that I called every major and local nursery & garden, to ask for donations for a community garden we are building in Watts CA, and each of them offered us 10% off, but Armstrong gave us 6 large flats of flowers as a donation. I will always support businesses that support the community! read more

We love the plant variety at this location. Lots of super healthy plants, friendly and generally helpful on-site staff. Thinking it'd be a good investment for our home, we recently placed a $10,000+ dollar order to entirely redo our back and front yard. We used the Armstrong in-house designer service, picked out everything, etc. and had very high hopes for how everything would be handled. Fast forward to over 4 months later, (yes it took this long to get our plants installed) and much to my disappointment, we are now left frustrated with numerous dead plants, extremely thinned out landscaping, and a laundry list of things to now rectify. The installation and ordering process is appalling. I was naive to think that it'd be easy, assuming it would go something like this: Meet with a designer, pay for services, schedule install/removal dates, complete work. Everyone is happy. This however, couldn't be further from the truth. I've had to step in and play coordinator and foreman between all parties to manage every single step of the process, from confirming plant counts and species (no Latin names? Oops we can't help you), install locations based on design (which as a designer myself I really could have done on my own), scheduling removal dates, gravel/rock specifications, how and where to adjust plumbing for irrigation, plant install distances for watering, hill/grade v.s. light/shade requirements, etc. Armstrong relies on contractors to handle installation work, and I've been bounced back and forth between the two like a tennis ball, as one party blames the other and the horrible cycle continues. Armstrong: "Oh the contractor didn't tell you to order plants and set a schedule?" Contractor: "All we do is install, we haven't gotten word when the plants will be ready from Armstrong. Call Armstrong and set a schedule." There was ZERO effort on Armstrong's side to inform me of how this process works, and I've single handedly had to take the reins on getting people to actually do something. I am no gardening expert, however I was left with no choice but to become one. Learn everything about landscaping, but keep paying Armstrong because they're the "pros". Yes. Pay them to sit around and wait for me to do everything but dig holes and place plants. My experience with Armstrong has been anything but professional, and am absolutely appalled by their logistics, customer service, design, contractor management and final product. This has been an awful experience, and would NEVER recommend it. read more

I very seldom have the opportunity to come out here, but really enjoy the expansive location that occupies two lots across from each other. The main store is rather small, but the selection of trees is much larger than other Armstrong locations. To me, it's relaxing shopping for trees and ornaments for the yard. Today, it was just hummingbird nectar, as there are few flowers blossoming during the winter. My next purchase may be a sequoia tree, as we lost our eucalyptus during a wind storm two years ago. I gotta admit, the gardening history of my grandfather down to me is strong, and I hope to help the environment during all my gardening! read more

Armstrong in La Canada is a solid place to fulfill your plant fantasies! It has a ton of indoor plant options, and the staff is always willing to help out if you have questions. I've been here to pick up a Christmas tree once or twice, and the employee was kind enough to help us move our tree to a nearby location. Pricing is reasonable (I didn't observe anything that looked overpriced), and they have a parking lot so its easy to find a spot before heading in. read more

I visited Armstrong for my first time on their 130th anniversary (brave of me right?) I had 2 indoor pots and 1 shallow pot to fill. After just a minute of aimless wander I asked Amanda the store manager for help and boy did she help! She was so extremely pleasant and nice to help me fill my succulent pot, walk me through the basics, and fill my cart with everything I needed. Especially when the store was super busy. Easily the worst of all the Armstrong locations (we've been redoing our garden and landscaping for months with many visits to this and other locations). Employees are not particularly friendly and not particularly knowledgeable and the selection is usually pretty abysmal. This is really surprising and disappointing because several of the other Armstrong locations are outstanding both in terms of the employees there and the selection. When a customer in front of you in line starts to ask the inevitable series on on-going questions all of the clerks present at the registers join in by stopping what they are doing so they can participate in the lengthy dialog while all the other customers wait and wait to check out with their plants. This practice has been elevated to a perpetual habit and no matter how many other customers are waiting in line, all workers focus on the now critical questions of the customer in front of you. Why does it take three Armstrong workers to come up with answers to the customer that has nothing but time to ask a litany of on-going question after question? If you are ever able to get the attention of one of the workers, they soon drift off to helping yet another customer out in the yard. Their attention span is limited to a matter of a few seconds unless they are at the area of the register, where one customer's questions can hypnotize all of the workers present. Then there is the ultimate session of trying to resolve varying opinions of the three workers present, which never appear to happen. Occurs every time in La Canada. Must be the altitude. read more

I purchased some vegetables plants on October 10, 2020. I was told when I purchased them, that I could return them if something went wrong. It was a very hot week and I kept them in the shared and watered them daily. One 6 pack did not make it and I return it 10/22/20. The first sales rep ask me what I did to it. Then Ernie, one of the managers also asked me what I did to it and that they water plants twice a day and that he could not resale the plant. Their plant did not last more than two days. I again told him that the sales lady who rang me up said I could returned the plant like Home Depot. He agreed to give me store credit and I though for about 30 seconds that I do not ever want to come to this store and i wanted my credit card refunded. He was surprised that I would feel that way. They both made me feel that it was my faults the plant died. Like I want to waste my time. Then he said the register would not allow him to process a refund. I asked for his manager and he gave me her number. I called A, the manager and left a voice mail message regarding a customer service issue but she never called back. I have never encountered an overtly rude worker here but they are slow beyond belief. The young mother in front of me waited Patiently for 15 minutes with a screaming child on her hip and an arm load of stuff to purchase, while the cashier just shot the breeze with the customer ahead of her. She waited, I did not and neither did the person behind me. And this isn't just a one time thing this frequently happens. They also will just not answer their phone. Ever. Once I finally decided on the trees, she went above and beyond to help me search for some ceramic pots. It was pretty busy, but she was very attentive, and arranged everything including the delivery. I really like this Armstrong Nursery location! They always have a good selection of tropical plants, succulents and cacti which is what I mostly buy. They also always have all of their terracotta pot sizes in stock. The staff is always friendly and able to help whenever I've had questions. Went shopping at Armstrong for spring flowers. Prices are a bit high but I liked the good selection and helpful employees. I bought $250 worth of flowers and planted them. Within a week 2 of the flowers had died (the rest were fine). Sadly I came to learn that Armstrong does not take any returns on flowers (unlike other places I've bought them). How disappointing to spend so much only to find such a customer-unfriendly return policy. It also now feels like a risk buying there -- if you overbuy, or get plants that immediately die, you're just out the money. For this reason alone I won't shop here in the future, at least not for flowers. read more

Very poor result. Very misleading. No chance to honor rebate on christmas tree stand. I will never shop here again, and I will tell all the people I know how upsetting my experience was. In short the waste of money and gass and time was not worth the trip to armstrong!! The employees are not the problem, the company policy is to blame!
