One of maybe three places in New Hampshire where I will go for barbecue. Is it the best barbecue you'll ever taste? No, but it is solid. Arnie's is a great little restaurant/ice cream stand in Concord that is the perfect place to go on a summer evening (or unseasonably warm spring evening) after work for a plate of ribs and pulled pork followed by a scoop of ice cream. The ribs and pulled pork are smoked and served dry, but there are squeeze bottles of Arnie's house made sweet, smokey and spicey barbecue sauces across from the ordering counter. The fact that they make their sauces themselves means that they taste slightly different depending on the day. So sometimes the sweet is just right, others it's too sweet. Alternatively, the smokey can be too vinegary some days. Some would think this a flaw, but i like it. I put a little of each in the sauce cups and sample them while I wait for my order. As for sides, there really isn't anything spectacular here. The coleslaw is ok, the potato salad is ok and the cornbread is fine. If you feel obligated to order something other than smoked meats, I recommend going with the baked beans, onion rings or fries. They also do a regular grill menu with burgers and hot dogs, and while these are, again, nothing special, they certainly are tasty enough. As for icecream, my girlfriend goes crazy for their cake-batter ice cream and I'm a big fan of their frozen yogurt. Honestly, it's really hard to go wrong with anything on their ice cream menu. Summing up: It's not gourmet and you won't see them winning many barbecue competitions, but for what they do and for where they do it, you'd be hard-pressed to find someplace better. read more

Disappointed. I Ordered the chicken tender dinner with sweet and sour sauce. There was no sauce included. There were 3 small chicken tenders with absolutely no seasoning which were completely dry, and a small handful of frozen fries. I have been a customer at Arnie's for 10 years and I have never had a bad experience. It's remarkable. They have wonderful home made ice cream, great burgers and barbecue, and incredibly friendly service. Honestly, this place rocks. The burgers, fries and onion rings are the best in town and the pulled pork sandwich is the bomb. Most importantly, the help is helpful and friendly and impossibly cheery in the face of hordes of ice cream seekers. The worst thing about Arnie's is that it closes for a couple of months every year. I do not trust the 5 star reviews. I just can't imagine anyone thinking it is worth 5 stars. It is waaaaaay overpriced. The burger was the size of a dollar cheeseburger from McDonald's. It had no toppings... Just some sauce and a pickle... And taste-wise, it was a 2 out of 5 at BEST. I spent $30 for my wife and I to eat lunch and we left hungry. Making it worse, we SHARED fries and a drink due to the price and it was STILL $30. Then we tried to get a refill and they wanted a dollar for that. Really? The $3 soda doesn't come with effing refills? Eff you Arnie's. How is this place even in business? I can't imagine there are people who go here regularly. This was a $15 meal for $30. Arnie's Place, located on the Heights in Concord, NH, lobbies itself every year as the rival of Friendly's for Concord's best ice cream; a hometown hero against the big corporation. Of course, Arnie's isn't known just for its ice cream; it's also got a thing or two for those with a hankering for some mouth-watering, tender barbecue. For those with Southern-inclined appetites, this place sounds like a dream come true. But how does Arnie's stack up? Well, first of all, you can't complain about the food or ice cream at Arnie's--especially the selection. With over 50 ice cream flavors and numerous barbecue items, there's plenty to choose from on Arnie's menu. And as far as the taste goes--well, let's just say the meat falls off in all the right places. It's delicious food, undoubtedly, and when I say the girls at Arnie's make a mean thick shake, boy, do I mean it. Unfortunately, the value of Arnie's doesn't necessarily meet the portion quantity. With a "large" thick shake coming in at $4.95 (and the large is no more than 20 ounces), and a small plate of pulled pork well over eight dollars, Arnie's is not the place to go for those balancing a careful budget. Let's be real, okay? Arnie's is a seasonal roadside burger/bbq joint that cries out "We look and feel like 1958 (or is it 1972?) and our burgers and ribs are the best - char broiled or smoked to perfection". Sigh... sorry, Arnie. What you really have here is a greasy spoon, albeit with decent ice cream (more on that later) and friendly high school student window service. There is a small indoor seating area (about five small tables, seats perhaps 20) and several picnic tables outside for eating al fresco. The decor is a mix of 1950's circus and hot rod club. Having driven by this place many many times over the years, and being huge fans of both charbroiled meats and anything barbecue, we finally stopped in to eat on a recent warm and busy Saturday night in April. We ordered the standards: a charbroiled cheese burger, french fries, and the pork platter (ribs and pulled). And here is what you will get at Arnie's... The burgers are frozen patties, slightly on the large size and dripping with what surely must be 70% lean beef. (For those of you unfamiliar with fat content, 70% lean ain't lean at all - in fact it's a disgusting cheap grind.) If you like your Wonder bread style hamburger roll mushy and can keep the lettuce and/or tomato from sliding off entirely, you might enjoy this. However you will need extra napkins to remain grease-free. The "cheddar" cheese is a slice of orange something - think Cheese Whiz and you'll know the taste. The fries are frozen and come from a bag. This by itself is not a crime, but it's a shame that a place which makes its own ice cream doesn't take the time to make it's own hand cut fries and distinguish itself from the McD's down the road. (Anyone can cook frozen food - including us!) So far not too different from many greasy spoons we've encountered and survived through the years. The pork platter of ribs and pulled pork consists of dry, sauce-less ribs with no special flavor at all beyond dull. The meat does fall off the bone, but there are occasions when this worries us! Same for the undistinguished pulled pork. The vinegar based table BBQ sauce is mild but certainly helps disguise the uninspired meat. Arnie's claims that the ice cream is home made, and we have no reason to question that it's their own mixture, regardless of where it was made. Chocolate chip and an orange pineapple were creamy and tasty, though expensive by most New England standards. (A small, one scoop dish is nearly $4.00! Throughout New England you will normally get a plateful of ice cream for that price! And we can tell you where if you don't know.) Arnie's seems a popular place for sure. Service is a little slow when it's busy, but the kids at the windows are generally friendly and efficient if not fast. Ice cream is good enough to give it a grudging two stars, but otherwise avoid the disappointment. read more

This review is only for their ice cream. I have not eaten the food but I can say that I'm sure it's just as ridiculously priced and underwhelming as the ice cream is. We ordered two ice creams. Mine- regular twist on a cone and my fiancée ordered a regular black raspberry in a dish. $10 and change total. My ice cream was equal to the size of a McDonald's ice cream cone if not smaller. And this is Arnie's "medium" size. My fiancées was also very underwhelming. Two small scoops to equal out maybe a small at any other ice cream stand. People. Don't waste your money and time here. Solid 4 stars. It's diner fare associated with yesteryear. The food harkens back to a simpler times BUT tasty and quick. Staff are fun, energetic, mostly kids which makes it more fun/nostalgic. The double dog deals (footlongs with the works) side and a drink, $11.53. Worth it. BBQ is tasty, a little shy on the portions and about average with sauce offerings. I love this place! It's locally owned and operated (I'm so sick of national chain restaurants), and it's perfect for a family outing. Prices are absolutely reasonable, and the food is delicious. Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Chicken Tenders - it's diner food done perfectly. Order at the counter & sit down to eat, but do NOT skip the home made ice cream that they make on site. My daughter had the peppermint stick, and I had the maple walnut - these people know what they are doing! Definitely worth a stop if you have time. :) read more

This is a great place to go for Barbecue and Ice cream. Came in today for a "Combo Pladda" and my co worker got a Chicken Sandwich and a Flurry, And we left satisfied by not only the meal but also the service. As usual the staff was friendly and fun, the environment was clean and inviting, and the food was hearty and delicious. Just moved up from VA to Concord, NH and was missing southern comfort food. Luckily, we found Arnies Place, a staple BBQ joint and family owned. The Owner is outstanding and on site - his employees are all very friendly. My family and I really enjoy it and was very surprised to find such good BBQ in New England...thank goodness!!! (They even have Carolina BBQ sauce.!) Their homemade ice cream is also extremely good. Love the maple flavor and our kids loved it! Recommended to all. read more

Firstly, I hope that if you live in our around Concord, you have been to Arnie's Place. it is a staple of the city and is someplace everyone should visit at least once! I love Arnie's. Whenever I am in the area I love to stop in. There is a great selection of hot food, such as burgers, hot dogs, and BBQ! The BBQ especially is well cooked and flavorful. I am particularly fond of the pulled pork. For dessert, there is a gigantic variety of ice cream which (especially the flurries!) are a great way to cool off on a hot day. Tom (the owner) also lets people host fund raising events on the property, which certainly helps local groups out with a central spot. They sponsor youth sports teams and are active in the community. I especially enjoy the old car shows. To close, the food and dessert taste great, and you are supporting a business that supports the community. Its a win/win. read more

Not sure what all the hype is about Arnies. My family and I have lived in Conord for 10 years now and have found Arnies to be over priced and most of the ice cream is nothing great. The portions are VERY small. The BBQ is absolutley awful and over priced as well. The atmosphere is great I will give them that, but as far as value and quality, no thanks. Jordans in Belmont along with Langs in Pembroke are a better value and much better quality. Arnies gets more expensive every year, we are all about supporting local, family owned businesses, but not when we feel taken advantage of. read more

We love this place, both for the food and ice cream. Really enjoy getting the food and sitting at the picnic tables that line the exterior of the restaurant. Ice cream is some of the best around, as well as the BBQ. For the ice cream being to expensive, that seems to be the trend everywhere (Goldenrod, Johnson's, Birchdale etc. etc.).
