After spending the day out on the water, we were ready to unwind with a great meal. We love Nepali and Indian cuisine, so when we found Aroma House nearby, we decided to give it a try. I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect. It's a small restaurant, there weren't any other guests when we arrived, and it felt like they were just getting started for the day. Since we were almost two hours from home, we figured we'd stay anyway. That turned out to be one of the best decisions of our trip. We ordered some of our favorites: Chicken Tikka, Aloo Gobi, Garlic Naan, Tandoori Chicken, and rice. Instead of our usual biryani, our server recommended the coconut rice. I'd only ever had coconut rice with Caribbean or Thai food, never with Nepali or Indian cuisine, so we decided to trust the recommendation. From the very first bite, we could tell everything was made fresh with care. The coconut rice was incredibly rich, creamy, and flavorful, it practically melted in our mouths and paired beautifully with the Chicken Tikka. The Tandoori Chicken was perfectly marinated with just the right amount of char, juicy on the inside and packed with flavor. The Aloo Gobi was equally impressive, with tender potatoes and cauliflower that had soaked up every bit of the aromatic spices. And the garlic naan? Fresh, buttery, and the perfect companion to every dish. This was hands down some of the best Nepali and Indian food we've had in a long time. Every dish tasted thoughtfully prepared, and the warm hospitality made the experience even better. If we're ever in the area again, I'd gladly make the nearly two-hour drive back just to eat here. I work at a company that uses a service to let their employees order comped food from local restaurants. Usually the options are not very appetizing, so when I saw Aroma House on the list today I was not very hopeful. Nevertheless, I ordered the lamb korma and figured it would be edible and nothing more. I cannot accurately state wrong I was. I was absolutely blown away on the first bite. Not only was it by far the best restaurant my company has ever given us the option to order from, it was without question the best lamb I've ever eaten. The lamb fully melted, just cooked to perfection, and the korma itself was creamy and flavorful, perfectly warm spices without being hot. I also ordered the cheese naan, which on top of being equally flavorful was also huge. This was not only delicious but very helpful because when ordering I did not realize I had to order rice on the side. But that's my fault, not the fault of Aroma House. I will definitely be taking a trip to Redwood City to eat here in person, as well as letting my company know that I would love if they could offer Aroma House as a lunch option again in the future. read more

I went to Aroma House to have a quiet birthday dinner. We ordered naan, veg biryani, aloo gobi and samosas. I loved the naan which was fluffy and fresh and the veg biryani that was flavorful and full of vegetables. The service was excellent and they even brought out gulab jamuns since it was my friend's birthday. First time having Nepali food and I was pleasantly surprised. We preferred to try the not common dishes and decided to have the Bhutan Set Combo and Badel Sadeko as our mains. We also had Buff Momo as our appetizer, Garlic Naan as a side and Gazar Halwa as our dessert. The dishes were flavorful and not gamy at all. The goat intestine in the Bhutan set and the wild boar belly in the Badel Sadeko were chewy but that was expected as the meats were fried to a crisp. Overall, it was a good introduction to Himalayan cuisine. Service was very good. This place is going to be our new go-to for Indian food in Redwood City! After the closure of the Indian place in Roosevelt Plaza, we've been looking for a solid place nearby with a vindaloo (my husband's favorite). We ordered the lamb biryani, goat vindaloo and butter chicken and all were delicious. Our kids scarfed down the butter chicken (which had generous chunks of tandoori chicken breast) and probably ate more than I've seen all week. My husband said the goat vindaloo was really good - different from other ones he's had but definitely to come back for. Service was super fast - I ordered online from their website and got the message it was ready in the 15-20 minutes promised. Location is a shopping plaza in the middle of a residential area in the hills. There looks to be plenty of seating in store, there's a lot of parking in that plaza generally, and it was a cute and clean looking place. This place has to be my new favorite Indian place in the peninsula. Went there with a party of 5 this evening for dining in & my gosh felt in love with it. Came to know the place is now under new management. Been there twice before & it look very medicore but now i see drastic change with the ambience and the lightning. The chandelier with the high ceiling & a dark theme background is such a perfect spot to enjoy with your loved ones. Talking about the food, we orderded different momo & must say the chili one was the best one. The jhol momo also lit. Chicken chili was very falvorful & 65 was crispy which everyone of us liked. One of the newest dish i tried today was the Dynamic Shrimp , which lived upto its name as it was truly dynamic with the rich sayce layerd on top. On the main dishes we got the goat curry, kadhai chicken and butter chicken with some garlic naan and rice. Must say every dish was extremely rich & flavorful. This place is a legit gem, and I'm honestly confused by some of the mixed reviews. We ate here last night and ordered vegetable samosas, naan bread, aloo gobi, veggie biryani, and the cardamom cream ball dessert. Every single dish was excellent. The biryani was deeply flavorful and perfectly cooked, the aloo gobi was outstanding, and everything arrived hot, fresh, and in very generous portions. No shortcuts, no lukewarm plates, no "almost good" dishes. Just solid, well-executed Indian Nepali food. The service deserves special mention. Five-star, full stop. Warm, attentive, and genuinely kind. It felt less like a transaction and more like being welcomed into someone's home. They checked in, asked what we thought, and even surprised us by not charging for a birthday dessert. That kind of hospitality is rare and it matters. Yes, the interior is currently in transition. It's been freshly painted and feels a bit warehouse-like right now. The staff explained it's temporary, and honestly, once that's finished this will easily be my go-to neighborhood spot. Even as-is, the food and service completely carried the experience. I don't know what's going on with some of the pickup and delivery mix-ups mentioned in other reviews, but dining in was flawless. If they tighten that side of the operation, this place will do very very well. I've been meaning to try Aroma House for years and finally got around to it yesterday for lunch. WOW it was excellent! We had Salmon Tikka Masala (fabulous sauce), Lamb Rogan Josh (delicious), Gobi Bejule (crispy cauliflower, creamy and crunchy at the same time, very good), garlic naan, basmati rice, and rice pudding for dessert. This restaurant is located in a small plaza and kinda tucked in the corner. We were greeted and seated by the owner upon entering the restaurant. They have an extensive menu. We ordered the Chicken Momos, Chicken Tandoori, Garlic Naan, Chicken Sekuwa Set Combo, and a Mango Lassi. Our food came out in a timely manner. The Mango Lassi has the right amount of sweetness to it. The Chicken Momos were just ok. The Chicken Tandoori was served warm on a regular plate with raw onions on top. The chicken was tender and it was kinda spicy. We're used to having nonspicy Chicken Tandoori on a sizzling platter with onions. It would have tasted better if the onions were caramelized. Aroma House really came through for our kindergarten class. Our kids were studying Nepal, and parents were coordinating a small food tasting so they could try a few representative dishes. Prajwal was super helpful from the beginning. He helped us figure out the right amount of food, kept in touch by text, had everything ready right on time, and packaged it really well for us to bring into the classroom. We even increased the order the day before, and they handled it without any issue. We ordered chow mein, momos, naan, and mango lassi, and it ended up being such a great way for the kids to experience a little Nepali cuisine. Since then, my family has ordered from Aroma House twice on our own. We've tried the butter masala with chicken and paneer, samosas, veg biryani, and fire-grilled paneer. Aroma House gets a mixed review from me, but I still recommend eating here. The menu offers a decent selection of meat and vegetarian appetizers and entrees... but has a very limited selection of fish and seafood. Dishes varied from excellent to acceptable. The highlights for us were - Batter fried cauliflower with onion and bell peppers in house chili sauce. This was neither over-battered nor greasy, but quite tasty. - Butter chicken - not the best we've had, but very good - Malabar fish curry simmered in coconut milk and fresh herb curry finished with curry leaves. This was absolutely delicious and melted in our mouths. - Vegetable korma - Fresh vegetables prepared in tomato butter and cream sauce Portion sizes are small. So, for sharing plates, each dish is ok for 2 - 3 people, but beyond that, you won't have much to eat Surprisingly, the biggest disappointments were the nan and whole wheat roti. Both were dry and the nan tasted more like pizza dough than nan. They fell below our expectations compared to other Indian restaurants we've eaten at. This was our second visit and we enjoyed the food both times, but not the breads. Food aside, the service is very attentive and helpful. I made my husband and daughter go there with me after I saw Mulligatawny Soup on their menu. It's one of my favorite soups. If you've had it in the UK or Europe, you know what I'm talking about. Curry flavored, other spices, chicken, mildly spicy, it's delicious! It's a classic Anglo-Indian dish. So of course I ordered it since it was the main reason I wanted to try this place under new ownership. Oh boy, seems like the chef doesn't know what Mulligatawny soup is, maybe he liked the name and decided to use it for his plain lentil soup. Really, they're calling a plain lentil soup Mulligatawny Soup. I was so disappointed! We also ordered Butter Chicken and Tikka Masala chicken, they were good. What I didn't like is that everything is à la carte, you pay extra for the rice. Btw, we went on Tuesday around 6:30/7:00 and it was empty. The meat (lamb and chicken) fell apart under the fork. The Chow Mein was delicious with wonderful flavors and texture, very different in both from traditional Chow Mein. I'd only had steamed Momos before: these came in a rich, savory sauce with sautéed vegetables and spices: my best Momos ever! The food was presented elegantly, in polished copper dishes. This food is ethereal. First, the dal soup is perfect. I could have a gallon daily and never eat anything else again. It's served In a small hammered copper pan as is much of their food. The vegetable pakora are incredible. Like the best little latkes ever made. The vegetable momo are piping hot, even after several minutes and the dipping sauce us perfect. Lots of families here. This place is awesome. We've loved that authentic (and unique!!) Nepalese food for a long time -- not just the chili, Manchurian and momos that you can get lots of places -- but also the far more unique stuff like the black eyed peas and board and dry cooked dishes. More recently we got the mora traditional Indian like chicken tikka masala and naan for the kids and these we also the best versions of those classics. Honestly the best chicken tikka masala we've had outside of the UK. Wildly awesome and reasonable prices. I did notice that they don't have all their more unique things on DoorDash and keep that menu more classic and less off the beaten path. If you want to try it could do it for either but it's also cute and quiet and worth actually stopping my to try the more unique stuff you can't get brought to your door. When we opened the bag at home, one of the meals was completely missing, the one I was supposed to eat. When she reached out, the owner said they were "out" of what we ordered and acted like two people could just share one dish. By the time they offered to make something else, the rest of the food would've been cold. He refused to refund the missing meal or the tip, and when she mentioned it was for her birthday, he basically dismissed it and told her to "leave as many reviews as you want." There are several complete, thoughtful reviews already posted for Aroma House. Mine is very overdue, so I'll try and keep it tight. At first glance, this could easily be mistaken for a humble, 12-table neighborhood joint at the gateway to Emerald Hills. (This is Canyon Road at Oak Knoll, the major intersection where the hills meet the flats.) The tech bros and Rivian rangers who infest the neighborhood currently seem to treat it as the default local takeout. This is not the complete story. I've been there all of three times and every one of those times I've noticed non-locals of Indian and Nepalese origin coming up the hill to seek this place out. That right there has to tell you something. Taste first: The curries and vindaloos are uniformly excellent. The naan passable. My dinner companion tonight was a 94-year-old lady who has eaten fine cuisine on five continents over 80 years. Her ringing endorsement is usually "yes, that was fine, honey." This time apparently the fish curry had some sort of transcendental seasoning, because she told me and the server at least six times that this was "very, very high-quality, really good ..." That right there also has to tell you something. Practical matters: The dining room is small, cozy and very comfortable. Prayer flags and flowers are always a good call. It may get loud as bombs later on a weekend night, but on a Wednesday it was blissfully tranquil with what was essentially a private room and a dedicated server. I should note this is not a Madras-style steam-table buffet crank-it-out volume deal. Get there before six and you will probably be one of maybe three tables working. The young server we had this time was very good. Considering a pretty tough customer who was both nearly deaf and blind, 20 percent would be the minimum gratuity acceptable. The take-out business seems to keep them afloat through the week. They also seem to do a fair amout of Doordash traffic. Unsure how lunch hours go. But a tip to remember: The complete dine-in menu is more than twice the size of either version you can find online for takeout. It's really worth looking at the full deal at least once and ascertaining if you can order from the full card for takeout. Why is the big menu a big deal? (I mean Denny's has a big menu, no?) The two sauced dishes we had as entrees were completely hand-made from scratch and our server confirmed work on those sauces started five hours earlier. I doubt they have a microwave or a can opener here. Old school, hardcore. Be aware that it's not necessarily marketed as such, but this is cuisine from the far north of the subcontinent. A very significant portion of that menu is Nepalese specialties. Water buffalo dumpling appetizer? Wild boar? Cauliflower with the tits-deluxe Manchurian sauce? No problem. On value, we pretty much stole from them this time. Don't be a d*****bag and broadcast it, please. To put things in perspective, within Community there are six restaurants within feet of each other and at one of them you could spend that much on a pizza to go. Other things: No liquor license but the Indian folks next door at Community Market have plenty to carry in. Chicken, fish and lamb are staples of the menu, but it's worth noting that the vegetarian third of the huge card has a great deal to offer. A vegan would be very happy here, as long as they inquire about clarified butter, Indian cottage cheese, etc. I've been here with groups of three or two. I think the best way to appreciate what they do is to bring five or six people, get a big table and make a party of it. Go hog-wild (oops) go lentil-wild and devour the menu to share. The small copper pans that come to the table are ideal for sharing. (If they weren't meant to share, why do they all have handles on them?) It makes sense to maybe over-order just a bit. Tomorrow you will be glad to see those takeout leftovers in your fridge. In my own experience the to-go carts rarely survive until the next day. That's my truncated top-of-my-head powerpoint take. We came here for a dinner at around 8 pm. It was very easy to find parking. There were many available slots. When we got here, there were no other diners. It felt like we came too late as the restaurant staff was having dinner. Anyway, we waited for about 5-10 mins, then someone came to greet us, give us menus and serve water. Ambiance was modest. We ordered fried pork belly and vegetarian thali. The fried pork belly was absolutely delicious. Vegetarian thali was also quite tasty and had a unique flavor compared to some of the other Nepalese food I have had in the past . I loved the royal thali look. This hidden gem in Redwood City was a fantastic find through Yelp and we've gone back several times since we discovered it last year. The food is authentic, delicious and most importantly, consistent!
