The Mountain Room is one of my favorite places to dine in Yosemite. I have been coming here for years, probably a dozen times over the last couple of decades, and the food has always been consistently good. This visit was especially charming. It was a beautiful day with a little snow outside, we had a window view, the wine was good, our server was very kind, and everything we ordered was delicious. I really like the quieter atmosphere here. The Ahwahnee dining room is beautiful too, but The Mountain Room feels a little more relaxed while still being a notch above casual dining. Reservations are highly recommended, especially during summer, and you can book ahead on OpenTable. Since it is located at Yosemite Valley Lodge, parking can be difficult when the area is busy, so taking the shuttle is often the easiest choice. From the gate we should've left. I don't think I've ever said anything about myself, but I will this time on top of will talk about who I was in company with. As a business owner for the past 30 (contractor, hot rod shop, cannabis company in 7 states) years along with my wife (cannabis company that operates in 7 states and manager of our construction and clothing company we operate together), a business owner of 10 years, my friends wife (owner of her warehouse and salon that resides within it), business owner of 8 years, good friend (owner of multiple warehouse and real estate properties as well as owns an import export business in a loyal client of for my multi state operational business) for the last 20 years. The reason I took the time to explain that was because we understand workers. I'd fire the hostess Treanna or however you spell it. Hands down gone, no talk or anything. Had we not already been embarrassed by her on Mother's Day, I would've took first time in my life to talk to a manager. Upon arrival, (a reserved one) we showed up a little early. Our party of 8, (3 young kids and one of them is 3 year old, and 4 adults) upon check in were told by Treanna they wouldn't be able to accommodate us because we only had 7 people on the reservation. 3 mothers on Mother's Day to be turned away. Well before I could react, Treanna scurried away and told my wife she'd make a decision for us shortly, but we'd likely have to come back at a later date. Thankfully as she walked away, another gentlemen who just missed her asked us if we'd checked in and we gave him our info and he immediately sat us down. Well nobody knew I was with the group yet and as my wife was headed to change a diaper, Treanna walked back out and without noticing I was there, she began to reprimand the gentlemen who sat our party down. He admittedly said it was his second day so sat there and was being scolded by Treanna, then she said out loud her next move was that she needed to figure out what to tell us because we weren't welcome to stay. ON MOTHERS DAY WITH 3 MOTHERS. To make it even better? I kept sitting there and watched more things unfold. Next? She stormed off and another group walked up. No reservations, and the new guy happily accepted them, party of 5 and sat them down. As they walked by, another group walked in and guess what?????? TREANNA WALKED BACK UP TURNED THEM AWAY AND SAID NO RESERVATIONS, NO LUCK. It legit was a couple in their last 70s early 80s. The lady looked so sad. After they left the nicer new guy walked out and Treanna told him to not take anyone in without a reservation. I kinda got that considering when we made the reservation on the phone they said they were most likely going to be a packed house until......... I walked in and the dining room was 1/2 empty. WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FFFFFF..... yea you see where I'm headed. So now that we were in the twilight zone and my wife walked back up she asked where everyone was at, we walked in. Our party was sitting there with an extra chair which we all fit fine. Matter of fact we could've fit 8, but since we were already turned off l, we started to pay attention to the food at other tables. I'm not too sure what I should've expected but the food all around us? Looked terrible. Well, upon sitting down as well we found out Treanna exchanged words with my friend who was at the table and he shut her down as she was still aimed at not having us there. Fat chance. Away from home, reservations with no other place to go, we weren't leaving. Now let's get to the good part. Our waiter. I wish I would've got his name. He's a bigger guy and he spoke kind of like he was acting. It was cool. Suited the setting and it was a loud clear voice so very easy to understand. We started with a drink and appetizer order. When he left we all sat and watched Treanna do the weirdest hall monitor type activities like silently going the water servers a thumbs up while she extra watched one of the younger guys like she had a crush. Hard to explain, but Twilight zone actions. Anyways the drinks showed up 24 minutes later and one of them had a floating something in it so we sent it back. The apps were served and the drink came after mine was long gone and we had already mentally checked out. The kids burger smelled burnt, and steak and fries were very obviously burnt, my house salad wise fine but tiny for the $$$ and the 2 strawberry salads weren't really edible. I rushed thru that last part but that's how we all felt, over it, FFWD, time to go. Luckily our waiter saw we weren't pleased and asked if anything was wrong and we were explained the hostess and we that we weren't going to eat there, it was 9 o'clock and over. My wife, who almost never says anything to anyone let the hostess know it made our top 10 worst servings we've had in the 30 years of us being adults. FIRED. read more

If you must dine out in the park, the Mountain Room is a nice place for that, with a modern lodge aesthetic, well-trained staff and excellent park views. While the food here is good, be prepared to pay a premium for the location. Marinated Cucumber - 2/5 Not sure what happened with this dish. While there were a few marinated cucumbers with lumps of ssamjang, the bowl was dominated by the other ingredients, by volume, principally the puffed vermicelli, which were rather long and difficult to eat without using my hands. The ssamjang was surprisingly authentic-tasting, but the dish overall was quite lackluster. Can't say I'd recommend. Charred Jumbo Shrimp - 3/5 A few excellent grilled shrimp, but the potion is rather small. 6oz Duck Breast - 2/5 The fried rice side is excellent, as is the blackberry jalapeno jam. The duck however, was not enjoyable, served rather dried out, and with incompletely rendered fatty skin attached. A disappointment. T-bone special - 4/5 A perfectly cooked steak. I had an absolutely wonderful experience at The Mountain Room Restaurant. The service was truly exceptional from start to finish. Our waiter was phenomenal. Very attentive and friendly. What really stood out was that EVERY staff member we interacted with was just as kind and welcoming. It created such a warm and seamless experience that made the evening feel extra special. The ambiance is honestly unforgettable. Dining with a direct view of Yosemite Falls is something you just can't replicate anywhere else. Sitting there, enjoying a meal while staring out at such a breathtaking natural wonder, felt surreal. The food and drinks were just as impressive. The mocktails were refreshing and thoughtfully made, and the pasta special we shared was absolutely incredible. The combination of prosciutto, pistachio, and sauce worked so well together. When in Yosemite ... The Mountain Room for a nice dining experience. Beautiful views from the dining room. Attentive service. We started with the focaccia and butter. Delish! Fresh baked and served with a flavored butter (citrus the night we were there). We then enjoyed starters of a classic French onion soup, crispy oyster mushrooms (think like fried calamari), and the soup of the day. The soup of the day was a silky smooth curry leek soup. The trout served with beets and fried rice was a big portion and very fresh. The rabbit pasta was also a huge portion. It arrived a bit cold but our server happily fixed this. He returned it to the kitchen and a new plate was brought out. It was perfect! Ended the meal with pumpkin cheesecake. A great place to get away from the chaos and enjoy a great meal. read more

We loved the ambiance so much that we ended up coming back on our second night during our stay in Yosemite. We stayed across the way at Yosemite Valley Lodge, which made it super convenient to dine here for dinner. The service was super friendly both nights, no complaints. On the first night, we ordered two vegetarian soups of the day, focaccia, and the pear salad. On the second night, we again ordered two vegetarian soups of the day, focaccia, and the crispy oyster mushrooms with aioli. The soups were really good, especially the creamy potato soup we had the first night. The second night's soup was a creamy vegan mushroom soup, which we did end up adding a little salt and black pepper to. I thought the pear salad was good, but the portion felt small for the price. The crispy oyster mushrooms were battered and fried (tempura style), well seasoned, and the aioli paired perfectly. However, these were a little greasy. Let me preface this by saying my expectations for dining in the valley are usually pretty low- some spots are decent, some are okay, many are mediocre at best. This, however, was by far the best meal we've ever had in Yosemite (and honestly one of the best restaurant meals we've had in a long time anywhere). We'd happily return even if this place were located outside the park with multiple other options. TLDR: Hands down the best dining experience we've ever had in Yosemite. Amazing food, great wine, cozy ambiance, and phenomenal service (Erik, you're the best). Our group of four arrived after an all-day hike and we were the last reservation sat at 8:30 PM. I also want to note that we had a vegetarian in the group and there were plenty of menu options for everyone. Despite being the final seating, we never once felt rushed. Ambiance: Open, warm, and surprisingly cozy. Service: Our server, Erik, was incredible- so knowledgeable, genuine with his recommendations, hilarious to boot, and just a joy to spend a meal with. He truly went above and beyond and made the night feel special. Drinks: Great cocktail list and wine selection, with prices that were honestly more reasonable than what we're used to in Big Sur. We ordered a Chalone Vineyard Pinot Noir, which paired perfectly with everything we ordered. Food: Every single dish hit the mark (a rarity), the portions were beyond generous, and we got to share a plethora of items: -House-made focaccia with whipped tomato butter: warm, soft, seasoned, with the perfect outer crunch -Vegetarian coconut-tomato soup: not something I'd normally order, but fantastic none the less with big chunks of fresh tomato and perfect for dipping the focaccia in -Charred jumbo shrimp with white beans + tamarind sauce: this was a standout (we almost ordered a second) -Filet mignon with white sweet potato mash, yuzu chimichurri, and broccolini (cooked perfectly and incredibly balanced) -Prime sirloin with potatoes & veggies (also cooked flawlessly) -Mary's organic chicken with sweet potato, cranberry-kale-green apple slaw, and veggies (sooo juicy and delicious) -Trout with fried rice, lemon-herb browned butter, and a huge serving of root vegetables (outstanding- we all agreed this was some of the best trout we'd ever had) Sadly, we didn't have room for dessert, but everything on the menu sounded tempting (bread pudding, flourless chocolate cake, cheesecake, etc). The bill was about $300, which felt extremely fair for the amount of food, wine, and five-star service. Overall, this was an unforgettable meal and the perfect ending to a magical trip. I know better than to eat at these expensive restaurants in tourist locations, but our friend really wanted to go so that's what we did. The fried oyster mushroom appetizer was fantastic! I wish I would've stopped with that. The aïoli that came with it was delicious, I ate every bit on that plate, except for what I shared with my friends who also enjoyed it. Two of my girlfriends got the halibut dish which came out really beautifully plated. Unfortunately, the fish was way overcooked and dry. She also said that the rest of the items on the plate were bland. My fiancé and I split a Caesar salad with chicken on it and the trout dish. The Caesar salad was a joke. Romain was drenched in far too much dressing. The menu said it was supposed to have bonito flakes on it, but I did not see them or taste them. I also didn't notice any type of crouton. We asked to add tomatoes, but the restaurant didn't have any tomatoes. The chicken was cooked superbly though, it was a pleasant surprise! The other dish we had was the trout with pea purée and saffron rice. The menu did not mention that it is a steelhead trout, which I actually really like. But I think that could be offputting to some people because it has such a stronger flavor. Nothing really special about this dish though. Since Yelp started, I probably have done a dozen reviews, all but a couple to steer people toward really great places. This is not one of those times. We ate there shortly after Memorial Day. Two of us had the ahi tuna with couscous, the other two had the Beast Burger. The Beast Burger was the Bust Burger. It was dry, flat, and looked like a burger you would get in coach on an airplane. It cost $32.00! the ahi tuna was try with a try at a mustard kind of thing. The couscous tasted like ground up dry wall. There was not a hint of moisture in it. The bill was way too expensive. The service was mediocre but they looked stretched for staff so its unclear whether that's routine or they were in post-holiday. But the kitchen failed miserably. Aramark runs the Mountain Lodge. It runs the dining room at the Ahwahnee as well where we had a terrific meal so they can do better. But for the money this is the worse meal in over ten years. read more

We spent a few glorious days inside Yosemite Park, and there's no better place to spend it than the Yosemite Valley Lodge. One of the many reasons is the Mountain Room. We had two dinners there - we ate at the Ahwahnee Hotel in between those 2 meals. That was a disaster, which I explain in my review of the historic hotel. Both meals at the Mountain Room were very good as the foundation for both meals was the Filet Mignon. The beef is locally sourced, and was as tender and succulent as can be. My partner and I both like our steak medium, and have found even the finest restaurants can't 'get it right'. The Mountain Room cooked both steaks perfectly both nights! It had a wonderful grilled exterior with a rich, savory gravy. We also got the halibut, which, was underwhelming. Halibut is a mild, thick white fish, with a delicate taste - it needs 'something'. The halibut had no flavor - I recall having Parmesan Crusted Halibut at a beach restaurant near LA, that was a great piece of fish! No different than this piece, but flavored! We also had the Waygu burger with blue cheese. It was delicious - I'd never had a burger with blue cheese before, but it adds a whole new perspective to having a hamburger. I initially thought the sandwich would be overwhelmed by the strong cheese, but the Waygu stood its ground well. My partner liked the Crème Brûlée; she said the caramelized topping complimented the rich creamy custard. We were pleasantly surprised by the food at the Mountain Room, especially the Filet! read more

Overall: 8.9/10 The burger was amazing I really enjoyed it. The blue cheese added great flavor, and the patty was juicy even without any sauce. The bacon was a great touch, and the patty itself was seasoned perfectly. I swapped the fries for a side salad, which was a nice balance. My only critique was that the top bun was a bit too charred for my liking. Overall: 9.5/10 for the burger. I ended the night with the chocolate torte. It was rich and not overly sweet super chocolatey, which I loved. It was a little cold, so I assume it was stored in the fridge, and the presentation could've been better. We reserved a table for a birthday dinner which we had to do in advance. What went well- The fried oyster mushrooms were the star of the night. We ordered it once and then two more times because it was that good. Hot, crispy, and fresh. The dessert, rose infused creme brulee with pistachio, was a hit too because of the way the flavors complemented each other. The vegan soup (quinoa and lentil), bruschetta, focaccia with basil mango chili butter, sauteed trout are also worth a mention Our server (pronounced as Shawn) was so polite and attentive. It was a delight to be at his table. They served a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a candle for the birthday! What could have gone better- Even with a reservation, there was a bit of a wait and we probably got our table after 30-40 mins of our original time. Something to take into consideration. We requested for a table with a view ie closer to the windows, but were seated in the middle of the restaurant The cauliflower Al pastor was under cooked (I'd say uncooked) and the side of fries were kinda burnt. We had to return the dishes and that's when we ordered the oyster mushrooms for the third time. The chicken with the linguine is quite bland and would do with more sauce, something that brings the dish together. It is overpriced so I probably would not return but if you are in Yosemite and have a special occasion, this would be an acceptable place to celebrate for that one night. read more

We came here the last week of August with a toddler. They accommodate toddlers well and the vibes were beautiful inside with the wood interior. Service was very good- our server was polite and accommodating to all we asked. The house salad was very fresh. Some welcome greens in a national park. The crispy oyster mushrooms were fantastic. A solid 5/5. My husband got the pan roasted halibut and I got the 16 oz Ribeye Steak. The steak was solid. The meal was pricey but considering it's a steakhouse in the middle of Yosemite, it's understandable. If I had to pay the same price outside of the park I wouldn't think it's worth it at all though. We dined at the Mountain Room Restaurant at Yosemite Valley Lodge with a 6:00 PM reservation and were seated promptly, which we appreciated after a long day in the park. Our server greeted us quickly and reviewed the evening specials, so the experience started off on a positive note. Unfortunately, things began to slip shortly after. Three of our four drinks arrived in a reasonable time, but the fourth, a Shirley Temple, never came. When we followed up, we were told they were out of grenadine and asked to choose something else. It would have been better to communicate that upfront rather than after the delay. We ordered three sirloin steaks (medium rare) and one kids' steak bites entrée. After waiting approximately 50 minutes--while noticing other tables seated after us being served--we finally received our meals. All three steaks were significantly overcooked (medium well to well done), which was disappointing given the price point. The broccolini was also heavily over-salted. The kids' steak bites were another miss--overcooked, under-seasoned, and difficult to chew. Dessert was mixed. The rosemary crème brûlée was enjoyable and well-executed, but the carrot cake was still frozen in the center when served. Due to the long wait for our meal, we ended up running late for our 9:00 PM Starry Night Walk, which was frustrating given the tight schedule many visitors have when staying in Yosemite. Overall, while the setting is beautiful and the restaurant has great potential, the food execution and pacing did not meet expectations--especially for the prices charged. This was the best pork chop I've ever had in my life. It was topped with an apple topping, which I was skeptical at first but WOW! So good. After a day of hiking, we went to this restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. The service was awesome, our server checked on us occasionally but was not overbearing. I have never been to this part of yosemite. This is definitely a nice dinner spot and beautiful paintings of yosemite. Food took a little while to wait but for waiter and server were fantastic. You really feel like you're at a fine dining establishment with the luxurious, modern decor, spacious interior with high ceilings, black and white photos of the treasures of Yosemite. I really liked my filet mignon which was a tad overcooked medium rare but well accented with the accompanying sauce, broccolini, and mashed potatoes. Everyone else really enjoyed their meals. It must have been an off night. Usually the Mountain Room is decent. The onion soup was very good as were my husband's grilled shrimp. He ordered the $72 filet medium rare. It was overcooked. Still tasty but not cooked medium rare. I ordered the trout. It was thin and dry and served over a bed of really badly cooked rice - brown and crunchy. Totally inedible. And a few pieces of - parsnips??? - who serves parsnips? And one tiny piece of a carrot top with stem attached. Yuck. Then the waiter returned with our bill but no credit card. Huh? Mountain Room Restaurant is located at Yosemite Lodge. They are open for dinner starting at 5:00 pm. They have a variety of dishes to choose from. They take reservations and walk-ins. We were there as the doors opened on a week night and had no problem walking in and getting a table for a party of 4. We ordered the wedge salad, french onion soup, sirloin steak and portobello mushroom sandwich with cut fries. All dishes were prepared beautifully and I personally had the portobello mushroom sandwich that I very much enjoyed. I also tried the steak and it was delicious. The whole family enjoyed this restaurant. The service was great and very attentive. The ambiance is on the nicer side of things. We arrived wearing what we wore from the day at the park and it was totally okay! There were a mix of people who dressed up and who wore casual clothes. Family friendly oriented if you have kids. The lighting and open glass views in the restaurant were beautiful. The prices are higher than surrounding restaurants but value for food overall was fair! The dining room was cold. Multiple people had placed their large winter coats over their legs and some children near us kept their coats and stocking caps on through dinner. Service was just okay. They have a pretty small menu and were already out of three items (brussel sprouts, rabbit and pear salad). We ordered the chicken, duck and steak with French onion soup. Came here after a proposal in the valley. Usually you can book smaller groups online max of 6 people I believe. Getting a large group reservation was a little bit more difficult as you need to call in and it took multiple phone calls to even get in touch with someone. We were able to book before our trip for a size of 15, but we needed to size down to 12 as well as request an earlier dinner time a day before our reservation since some people couldn't make it anymore. No luck getting in contact with them on the phone, but we ended up just getting there when they opened and they were accommodating to our change. This restaurant is definitely on the nicer end of places to eat in the park. Most people were dressed up or at least not in casual/hiking clothes. Food was delicious though. Really loved the Rib Eye as well as the appetizers for Brussel sprouts. Service was on point, and they treated our group very well. For desserts, we shared the Asian Pear, cheesecake, and Mexican chocolate cake. The cheesecake was most definitely the best one, while the others were just ok but I'd probably not order again. Overall, this was a wonderful choice to celebrate our recent proposal. Managing reservations would be the only annoying part, but if you have a smaller group, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. read more

With the reviews sort of hit or miss I wasn't sure what to really expect for dinner at the Mountain Room. My first impression was how much better of a setting it was in comparison to my experience at the El Tovar at the Grand Canyon. I was pleasatly surprised by the evening ambiance. Our trip in late September meant that it wasn't too crowded, and service was relatively quick. Our server was a very friendly gentleman who made the evening quite pleasant. The ambiance was very nice and I enjoyed our window table near the back. I started with the Burrata and then had the French Onion soup. Both were great. My dinner - I can't remember the exact name, was a dish with oyster mushrooms that was surprisingly good. It's too bad my travel companion wasn't feeling well the evening of our reservation because she couldn't enjoy it all that much. I would make a reservation here again if I were to come back to the park and want a nicer meal out. read more

Aesthetic ambiance with mixed culinary results We stopped in for dinner at this restaurant drawn in by its warm, elegant atmosphere -- wood-paneled walls, cozy seating, and stunning black-and-white landscape photography that creates a calming, upscale vibe. It definitely sets the tone for a relaxing meal. To start, I ordered a French onion soup, but unfortunately, it missed the mark completely. The flavor was off, almost as if it had been over-reduced or assembled in a rush -- not the comforting classic I was expecting. Thankfully, the rest of the meal helped redeem the experience. The mussels were fresh and tender, served in a fragrant, well-balanced broth with herbs. I also tried the red fish fillet, which was pleasantly cooked -- flaky, moist, and paired nicely with the sides. We sipped on a vibrant cocktail garnished with citrus, which was light, refreshing, and a great complement to the seafood dishes. Service was friendly and accommodating, and the space was family-friendly, which was a big plus. Front staff is unprofessional. Waited 1.5 hrs just to not get seated. Avoid this place at all costs.

Stopped in again during our yearly visit to Yosemite. I was so excited as this meal is always a highlight of the trip. Had a reservation and was quickly seated. Server was helpful in drink recommendations, we ordered the lavender lemonade and apple martini. For an appetizer we opted for the tuna tartar- it was okay but would've been better if the tuna had more flavor or a drizzle of sauce on top, it was slightly plain. For entrees we both ordered the filet mignon and I added a head on garlic shrimp. As soon as I cut into the shrimp it leaked a large amount of bright orange fluid and then found the shrimp was still very raw. The dish was remade, but sadly the shrimp was still slightly raw. The server also never checked on us again to see how the new dish was. The rest of the meal was great but those two raw shrimps and lack of follow up docked a star. I will not be ordering shrimp again if I return. read more

In my opinion, that and a dollar will no longer get you a cup of coffee, the Mountain Room is the ONLY great food in the whole Yosemite Valley! The food, service, and ambiance is always a nice experience. I have never had a bad dinner in the Mountain Room. Full bar and nice wine list. As soon as you make your reservation to stay in the valley, call the restaurant and make your reservation. This is such a welcome change. They never used to take reservations, first come first serve and normally an hour wait. They are on Open Table now which makes it so convenient. The room is very pretty with photographs of the park on the walls. Lights are dim and it makes it seem so intimate and cozy. The waitstaff is very friendly and seem to enjoy working there. Staying at Yosemite Lodge its just a short walk to the restaurant. read more

Of the three restaurants at the Yosemite Valley Lodge, Mountain Room is the "nice" steakhouse option. Reservations available, table service, a relatively quiet, relaxed steakhouse experience. Keep in mind though, you're still in a federally run place in a national park, so don't expect it to be Aspen. Service is good although food took a while to come. Ribeye steak was tasty and the kid's steak was actually medium with a good size, easily the standout (for the price). The oyster mushroom pasta was soggy, had no flavor, and the mushrooms were not good - pass on that dish. read more

Oh yeah! Can't believe I managed to get a last-minute reservation - I think people were still thinking they might see the Firefalls - but it was overcast and rainy and we had recently checked in to the lodge and wouldn't have made it by sunset to the viewing area anyway - Everything about dining here was great - from being seated to walking out - we had a wonderful waitress - was it Colleen? - and she was attentive from the start - from drink order immediately, to taking our order, to correcting an incorrect plate brought out (woops wrong steak! med rare, not well) all done in a personable manner - the manager came over and apologized for the mix up - which we hadn't even registered yet because my husband only had an edge bite of the steak - it was such a pleasure to eat there. The food? Also great! Ordered Lobster mac n cheese appetizer, salmon plate, steak, poke appetizer for a main, and the chicken. Yes, sure, the menu was not extensive - that just means that they will have to do a great job with it - and they did! For dessert, good vanilla ice cream and something like a chocolate brownie, I'm not sure - but it was all devoured. I apologize for the mac n cheese picture, the kids dug in before my picture - we at it all! I did NOT expect good food in the park, it has always been mediocre at best - but they really stepped it up at Mountain Room - we enjoyed all of it, and wished that we were able to get reservations the next night. As we left, the waitress and the manager, and the hostess all thanked us for coming. It was truly a wonderful feeling coming into the park and meeting employees that clearly know how to do their job and seem to be enjoying themselves. FANTASTIC! read more
