Well, if you're in Imperial Beach like I am, and you have the hunger for Sweet Basil with ground chicken, there really is no other place that nails the flavor like Aroma Thai. They are always fast, flavor is always on point, and I have to have this weekly or I'll lose my mind. This place is really nice. I would have never found it though if it wasn't for yelp. It's very much in the cut. But I am so glad I found it. It's going to be one of my new favorite places. There is street parking and a couple of parking spots in the back of the building. The people are extremely nice and friendly and it's affordable. Must try! One of the big negatives about this place is the heat. Imagine eating spicy food in a furnace... not fun at all. If it is a hot day, I recommend you just order the food to go. read more

I love me some Thai Foodie. I stopped in here because I was feeling hungry and craving for some Thai soup. I was thirsty and a little bit hungry after my morning walk. I had a wonderful time strolling at the IB Pier. The weather was breezy, so beautiful after the rainstorm. The Imperial Beach Pier is a popular spot for strolling, pier fishing and watching the waves and sunset. Wow I really miss Imperial Beach we used to live in this laid back beach town 5 years ago. Anyway, this location is only few blocks from the IB Pier. I was greeted hello by a nice Thai lady and told me that I can sit anywhere I want. I ordered water and a large bowl of Tom Kha soup for $9.95. Tom Kha soup is a traditional dish from Thailand. My soup was perfection. It was rich, creamy and delicious, mild spicy and sour hot soup with thin slices of chicken, coconut milk, carrots, mushrooms, broth, lemongrass, fresh ginger & lime juice. It has a wonderful balance of sweet and sour flavor helped along with the fragrance of fresh lemongrass and cilantro. Overall, it was "AROI" it means "Yummy or delicious in Thai languange. A bowlful of heaven, very light lunch and warms my belly. Huge servings. I ate half of it. My favorite soup in the world. It's a soothing comfort food for the soul. This spot is a modern relaxing restaurant, friendly service, casual, comfy seating, with traditional Thai decor. A Zen ambience. I love their Buddhas. Namaste Vibe. Highly recommend this restaurant if you love Asian Thai food and they have vegetarian options too. I gotta try the Pad Thai, Curry, and Mango sticky rice next time. Will be back. read more

We want a light dinner so we give this place a try. Love the decor and the place is clean. The food is delicious with the exception of the spicy wing. The chicken was heavily coated with flour. It so thick that chicken wing look like turkey wing but the flavor is really good. Definitely recommend the green papaya salad, very refreshing and tasty. The server was attentive but when place an order they didn't even bother asking how spicy we want it to be. Our food wasn't spicy at all when it is suppose to. read more

Aroma is my Imperial Beach Thai food connection. The food is always fresh. The service is excellent. The menu is broad. There is something for everyone. I usually get the broccoli with peanut sauce that comes with choice of various meats, fish or vegetarian alternatives. It is soooo good. The spring rolls make for a tasty appetizer. Been here in the past. Service has gone way down hill since last year! No wonder the place was empty on a Saturday during prime time hours! Waiters are rude. They put the menu on the table and walked away. No "welcome". No "here's the menu". No smiles! Just plopped the menu on the table and walk away. We felt very unwelcomed here! You have to ask for water refills. They weren't very attentive. I had the curry dish. The peas tasted like freeze dried peas that were very old and dried out! Our chicken satay was super dry! I almost choked on it! The chicken in the curry tasted old also. The mango in the mango sticky rice was not ripe. They must stay open because this is the only Thai place around for miles. I walked in with only 1 table occupied and sat down, salivating at the vegetarian options afforded on the menu (mock meat or tofu). I ordered a Green Papaya Salad and Panang Curry both level 10 spice. The intent is to walk out with both in a to-go box, but sometimes we say things and don't actually follow through with them. *shrugs* Both are pretty damn good. Server was not friendly. Food was not good. My friend had Pad Thai with chicken and I had drunken noodles with chicken and neither of them had chicken. The taste of my drunken noodles was bland and every fourth or fifth bite tasted bitter!! My friend said his Pad Thai was so bad he just couldn't eat it. Both of us agreed our soups were good. We ordered lad na, pad si ew, spicy catfish, spicy mussels, fried rice and tiger crying beef. La Na - we didn't realize that the sauce was on the side and didn't know until more than half way being done with our dinner. Otherwise, it was pretty good. Pad si ew - very similar to lad na just the dry version catfish and mussels - were our absolute favorites! Very flavorful! If you're not big on spicy food make sure to select a spice level below 5. Aroma Thai is a small and cute restaurant located right by the beach. It's super authentic here and their food is always delicious. I've had the pad thai, spicy basil, spicy noodles, and panang curry. All dishes so far have been super flavorful!! They give a lot of food for your order. I always leave with left overs :) they also have mock "meat" options for those who are vegetarian/vegan. Customer service however is a bit slow and they never really check up on people. But they are still super friendly. Another thing is that they have a lot of flies around the restaurant.. which does get pretty annoying because the whole time you try to eat, the flies try to get into your food /: Overall, I'd give this place a 3.5 stars because of the great food!! read more

I decided to stop in for lunch again, having sworn off doing so after my third and last time eating Crying Tiger here in 2019 (see previous review). But, with Covid and thinking maybe there might have been staffing or ownership changes in that time, I wanted to give Aroma Thai and my Thai fav always anywhere that I can get it, Crying Tiger. I asked for no rice with it and for a steamed cabbage substitution in place of their baby corn and ginger slices to accompany the carrots and broccoli. The server asked me how I wanted the steak to be prepared and I said medium rare and when the dish came out it looked lovely. I was hopeful!!!! But, as before and noted in my previous review, the meat was cooked so hard and dry it was hard to cut (and the dish only comes with a table knife, not a steak knife, making it very even more difficult to cut. In addition, the same previous problem was there with lots of fat and gristle on the tough meat that had to be removed. I don't understand the poor quality choice of meat or the lack of owner's response to this. I will again avoid this restaurant, unfortunately, for a very simple way such a problem could be solved. We came in for the first time to try it out. Honestly, the service wasn't that great. We came in and I used a checkin promo they had for Thai tea. It was buy one get one free and the sizes of the glasses they served for this special were half the size of a normal size drink, just FYI. We ordered another Thai tea and the glass was bigger. The food took a while to come out and there were other tables that sat after us that got their meals first. We hardly saw our server. She came once then a guy took over. Now the food was ok. I ordered a "Chicken" Thai Basil-spicy #2, fried catfish-spicy-#5 and Shrimp Pad Thai. The basil and catfish tasted the same and the basil was spicer than the catfish. That was disappointing considering we ordered it at a spicy level 5 and turned out to be less spicy than #2. I mean, over all.. I think it's a nice spot to pick up the basic Thai dishes like the Pad Thai and maybe even the fried rice, but we didn't think the other dishes we ordered were anything crazy. read more

When I go to eat Thai food and the Chicken Larb doesn't taste good, then I know everything is going to be mediocre. The larb was very salty, the sticky rice was hard as a rock. It didn't help that the customer service wasn't that great. The waitresses were consumed with talking to each other in the back. My husband and I didn't bother ordering anything else and left. This is my go-to thai place in the south bay area. The food is consistently great and I've never had a bad experience here. The staff is friendly and well-trained, plus you can have a nice walk of the pier after you eat. Last time, I was here on Mother's Day, and the owners had their sons passing out pink roses to every lady in the restaurant. My favorite thing to order is the yellow curry with vegetables and a Singha beer on the side. The spicy fried rice with tofu is also super yummy. However, everything on the menu is good and you can't go wrong with anything you order. read more

After a few days here in Imperial Beach eating beach fare, we were looking for something else for lunch. We are always wary of Thai food places because often the food is not authentic, down spiced for tourists. When we got to the restaurant, a long table of Navy men were awaiting their lunch. I figured we would be waiting a half hour or more before we would be served. But our server came over promptly and we ordered Pad See Ew with Roast Duck, and she asked how spicy we wanted it. I said "how about 6" and she said that was pretty hot, the cook was Thai. Back home, 6 would need a side bowl of chili, but we went with her advice. Fantastic is all I can say. It came out way quicker than expected, was perfectly spicy, not too much or too little, Goldilocks style! The Thai Iced Tea was also spot on. Our dish filled both my wife and I without feeling stuffed. A perfect Thai lunch. read more

Been going fishing at IB pier but did not really know this place not until my dad invited me to have lunch with him. This place is about two to three blocks from the pier. Just past that resort hotel. It looks kind of deceiving from outside, but I was very impressed when I actually see the restaurant from the inside. Spacious and really clean. Dad and I ordered their pad tai and yellow chicken curry lunch special. Their lunch portion is really good. I can't believe my dad was able to have leftover of his meal. We also ordered their fried banana with coconut ice cream. That dessert was heavenly. The coconut ice cream matches very well with the fried banana. Not a lot of diners when we were there, but I noticed a lot of people picking up to go orders. The only odd thing was the server did not ask us how spicy we want our food. That was a first for me in a Thai restaurant. When I realized this, I immediately went to the counter to specify to the guy the spice level of our food. Thai food it takes a whooping "meh ok", decided to order a simple Chinese dish. Some boiled noodles that then get flash fried with veggies and any type of protein (if added). Dish was very very bland again, everything seemed just blanched and tossed with the noodles. 3 pcs skinny broccoli, 5 thins slices of carrot, 2-3tiny pieces of corn, about 6 pcs of onion and 11pcs of cabbage tossed with skinny boiled strips of unseasoned chicken and a handfull of vean sprouts made up this amazing dish.
