I did my hair color with a student named Jasmine. She was sweet and quiet, which I liked but she was also lazy. She kind of rushed through my hair and when the instructor asked her to do the roots which required more time on her part, her response was: all of it? Clearly showing reluctance to the job she was asked to do. The instructor was quick to recognize it and asked her to tone my hair with the red dye instead. I wonder how my hair would've turned out had she taken the time to do the roots. When it came to styling my hair. She literally told me, oh it's raining outside so you don't need all that styling. Her co-workers observed her lack of work in my hair and asked her, you're not doing the styling? gloss and the shine? Especially with this red color? To which she replied, it's raining outside. And guess what, when I stepped outside there was not a single drop of rain! I wanted to tip her well, because I'm an extremely generous tipper but I left with a 15% tip instead. I left a 3 star review because the instructor was very sweet. She was the lady with short blonde hair. She seemed like she genuinely cared about my hair. THE WORST HAIRCUT I HAVE EVER RECEIVED. Before Arrojo, I had never been disappointed in a haircut. I decided to try Arrojo after a friend mentioned its where she goes and I have never regretted something more. (I wish I could give ZERO stars). I asked for a standard trim, like I normally get at every other place I go to. Arrojo RUINED my hair. The stylist clearly didn't know what she was doing and shouldn't have been allowed to cut hair. She took CHUNKS out of my face frame making me look like a bad 80's rocker. It was UNEVEN and choppy with holes everywhere. It is going to take me so long to get my hair back to where it was and repair this DAMAGE. I can't even say it was because she rushed the cut. I was there from 6:15pm to 8pm! So you can imagine my disdain when she took 2 HOURS for just a cut and I came out with uneven, messed up hair. I even said something to her mentioning that it was uneven and the face frame was much shorter and chunkier than the rest of my hair and she kind of brushed it off, and UNSUCCESSFULLY tried to fix it. I called Arrojo to give my feedback and spoke with one of the managers. She said that I needed to come back in to get it fixed. This is not something I wanted to do because (A) I was going out of town the next day and didn't have time to travel back into the city and (B) I DON'T TRUST anyone there to touch my hair ever again. Since I had to go to another salon and pay someone else to fix it, I asked for my money back. The manager said she would talk to the owner who would get back to me. I had an appointment with Noelle on 4/2 at 2pm and I booked this reservation about a month or two in advance, which was a double process. LIKE UM EXCUSE ME? Not one time did they call or send me an email to confirm my reservation or even notify me that I needed to come in for a consolation or anything. NOT ONE SINGLE TIME FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF MARCH, they tried to say that they put notes in my account about them calling and Noelle personally said our her mouth that her and one of the receptionists River called me. THAT IS A FLAT OUT LIE!! They never left a voicemail, nobody emailed me, I even have their number saved in my phone and I checked and the entire month of March they did NOT call me not one time.. As they're telling me all of this I'm clearly so upset and I told them that's crazy unacceptable, I work at a waxing center we would NEVER book people over your reservation, no matter if you're waxing your full body and it takes hours you just don't do that, you wait till the person shows up because that is THEIR reservation. So they visibly saw that I was upset and Noelle had the audacity to tell me to sit at a chair so she could see my hair to see if she could do it and then she looks at it and says "no yeah I don't have time to do it today".. HOW EMBARRASSING AND DISRESPECTFUL IS THAT???? IF YOU CLEARLY SEE IM UPSET AND YOU KNOW YOU BOOKED OVER MY RESERVATION WHY PUT ME IN A CHAIR AND SAY THAT TO GET ME MORE UPSET??? In front of people also like omg I was so mad. I don't know who is in charge of keeping track of confirming reservations but this was so unprofessional. I was so upset my birthday is on the 5th I had plans after this hair appointment, that Sunday and the day of and now I had to book a last minute appointment elsewhere and move all my plans... highly disappointed, I came here once before and loved it and sadly now I am never going back. I started going to Arrojo Studio because my favorite hairdresser Brittany Simone started working there. The whole staff is very nice and extremely professional from the second you check in right up to check out. Brittany is so talented, my hair is 95% gray and she colors it perfectly every time! I have to go every three weeks to maintain it with touch ups and every time I walk out I feel like a million bucks. She mixes up the perfect combination of base single process color to cover the gray and the most gorgeous coppery auburn tones for my highlights. I work around the corner and when I was in bad need of a hair cut a light bulb went off in my head and I said, why don't I go here! I mean after all, they sort out everyone on TV's What Not To Wear, so they should be able to sort me out. When making the appointment I described my hair type and common hair issues and was given the option of 3 levels of stylist. I went with the mid level recommended person for thick hair (I forget the name). The stylist was nice and the appointment wasn't too long or anything, the cut was just ok. This is the first review I've ever left on Yelp but I feel it is important to warn people with curly hair to not get their hair done here. The hair stylist gave me something completely different from what I asked, also cutting several more inches off without realizing what the length would be like when curly. It's now too short to even pull back in a ponytail to hide the haircut and I honestly feel embarrassed going out in public with it. I had to update my review. I must have been on a "free cut high" when I wrote my previous review. After talking to my friends about the entire experience, I realized that there are a few details I forgot to mention, which take a star away from the salon as a whole. We waited about 20 minutes before being shampooed. In that time, they could have asked us if we wanted water or a beverage of some sort. They have a juice bar attached to the salon. They also didn't talk to us about the haircut at all. We were never informed what length it would be, that it would differ from person to person, and that they would be chopping an important chink of hair on the side of our heads down to 2" in length. This is my main complaint. I am unable to restyle the "do" at home, and am forced to use product daily. They never informed me of this at all. My bangs are all different lengths, which would be fine if I parted my hair on the side of my head. My hair naturally parts in the center, and is impossible to change. I am very unhappy with that small portion of the cut. I know it'll grow out quickly, but I feel like I was lied to in a way and am not going to trust them in the future. Disclaimer: purchased a "total makeover" package for my Mother so this may not be 100% reflective of the normal experience My Mother has LOVED Nick Arrojo since his days on What Not To Wear. Unless you are rolling in money the price of a regular hair cut is prohibitively expensive. When I came across a black Friday special that included coloring, make up, and hair cut by Nick I HAD to purchase this for my Mother (with my brother's assistance). This salon is rather large and even boasts a cafe which serves coffee beverages as well as food items! Prices are actually reasonable. Upon entering we were greeted and directed up a small flight of stairs to check in. We met with Nick's assistant who informed us that would be meeting with Amy who would be doing the coloring. Unfortunately, Amy, though a veteran to the salon, seemed lass than enthused to be there. When my Mother booked the appointment, she specifically asked that Nick be present for the color consultation to get his input. After all, isn't that what we paid for? HIS expertise? In any event, she requested his service and he came down a short while after. Nick is amazing! Friendly, kind, compassionate. He listened to my Mother and told him exactly what he recommended. He completely put my Mother at ease which I was extremely thankful for. This was to be an exciting experience not anxiety provoking. As it turns out, despite sub-optimal attitude, Amy did a great job coloring my Mother's hair. She provided an excellent template for Nick. Nick cut my Mother's hair amidst the plethora of other stylists. Watching him work with the razor was amazing. He instructed me to stand in front of him and my Mother to get a great pic! (see pic). He was so personable, it was great! My Mom was thrilled! He told me that at the end of the experience he would take a complete pic. Next was make-up. Nicole, the make-up artist, was very sweet and friendly. If this was not part if the package my Mother would not have opted for the make-up option. Nicole listened to the concerns with foundation and made a lightweight, moisturizer + foundation mixture to accommodate. Several shades of lipstick later...Mom was done! She of course was beautiful! Nick kept true to his word and continually checked in along the way to ensure satisfaction. While we were checking out he brought the products he recommended (included) and then posed for pictures! Came to Arrojo on a whim when my original hair salon canceled last minute. I was determined to go grey and Arrojo was able to accommodate me the same day! Their receptionist was so friendly and put all my worries at ease. Since my color of choice was a bit 'exotic' they were kind enough to schedule a consultation first, then block out a time slot after to hold for me pending everything went well. I was pair with Zoe, and we were a match made in salon heaven! She completely understood all of my odd non-english request. (I tend to make a lot of weird noises and hand gestures when attempting to communicate with stylist - idk it's weird.) Anyways she totally got it and made all my visions a reality. She conjured up the perfect shade of 'gunmetal grey' and still kept my dark roots & dimension. She took so much time and and was so meticulous - I really appreciated her attention to detail. I think I was there 4 hours, but felt pampered and attended to the whole time. #PROTIP | Order a snack from the cafe while you process! The kitchen seems so take a while (especially on the weekends) so I'd order sooner rather than later. Wish I could give this place negative five stars! Used to be a great place, but they are now scamming you! My wife went in to get a haircut and highlights (~$500 total), with specific instructions on the style that used to work like a charm in the past (she was a loyal customer since 2013). Except this time they did an awful job -- and that's right before our vacation in Miami! They offered to fix it once we'd get back, but refuse to do so now that we have just arrived, claiming that it's past their arbitrary two week fixing period. Neither the colorist, nor the manager agreed to help. This place went downhill and deserves to shut down. Do yourself a favor and don't bring them any business. NYC is full of absolutely amazing and inspiring stylists, but you won't find them at Arrojo. read more

Amongst those who know me, I am notorious for taking an incredibly lazy approach to self-presentation, letting my political and cultural critiques come in the way of maintenance. A testament to this, for over a year my hair was set free to grow, yet I refused to buy a comb, and would only pile the resulting rat's nest of split ends on top of my head in a massive clip. A few days ago, on impulse, I cut 13 inches off at a low-key salon in Brooklyn, which filled me with joy for all of maybe one or two days at best. Then the love faded. My hair was clearly Dull, which for its price, and the fact alone that someone was paid too do something so unbelievably low on my list of priorities, simply would not do. This cut managed to spark a change, though... So I went to Arrojo yesterday morning, again on impulse and out of laziness, as I work in the same building. Tatum, my stylist, had an immediate flurry of ideas based on my incredibly imprecise hopes ("Um, so, kind of architectural, maybe, but, you know, still feminine? A symmetrical is good, of course, and just, uh, different, you know, like everyone probably asks for?"). He knew just how to compliment the shape of my face, texture of my hair, and personality, handled a razor with a supple wrist and flair, and was constantly open to my haphazard vetoes ("Um, can we, uh, you know, have more of a sharp angle or something?"). This is one incredibly talented and creative man- he had me absolutely shimmering over my haircut, gurgling with laughs for the rest of the day and up on through this morning! I've been receiving so many compliments already, I feel like a walking blushing cheek. Thanks to Tatum, my hair is refined and unique, elegant and playful, cut with precision and detailed sculpting. Not once have I come away from a haircut actually feeling relieved and truly comfortable in my appearance, until yesterday. He totally spoiled me with his southern charm, absolute excitement about his craft, and skill, and now I doubt I'll ever be able to settle for less. He's permanently changed my mind- a feat few can accomplish- about hair styling. This place is the epitome of you get what you pay for. I love the haircuts I get from here. They show you different level of stylists and you can make a decision based on your wallet. I come from inexpensive hair cuts and stopped by here since it was near one of our offices. The stylists would ask what I was in the mood for and chat a bit to tighten down what I've wanted. The results are incredible. They offer a small trim if you need a touch up after but for the most part the styles are great on their own until it grows out and even then its still stylish. Most people would say I look like I'm in my teens. Julia washed my hair and gave me a luxurious head /scalp massage. I would highly recommend her, because she made me feel so relaxed and comfortable. I have been coming here to see Amanda for over 10 years, and I could not be happier. She knows how to give my thick, wavy hair just the right amount of razor-shaped layers to let it embrace its natural texture without hanging puffily or dead. Most of the time I just put product in it and sleep on it wet, to good results. Her haircuts grow out well, too. The rest of the staff is courteous and professional (complimentary cold water or tea provided, too!), and the cafe in the back where you wait is super cute. I had an egg salad and arugula tea sandwich last time I went that was exquisite. I also really enjoy their range of hair products but appreciate that Amanda doesn't try to push them on you as part of your cut/blowout. They are cruelty-free. The dry shampoo is the best I have ever tried. The curl cream is also especially excellent. PRO TIP: Take off all your clothes but your underwear when you change into your robe, especially if it's summer. It can get really hot in there under the hairdryer. read more

I have been going to Arrojo for a little over two years now, so I thought it was about time that I write a review! I get a very specific straight bob cut, that looks simple, but is REALLY difficult to find good stylist for this cut. I have had all great bob cuts here, but recently have been seeing Julia specifically for several cuts and she is great. She makes sure to pay attention to the detail of the cut, and it shows. The atmosphere of the salon is great, I haven't had a color experience here yet but every time I am there I have seen some really great transformations from the colorists in the salon. All in all, it is a great place and worth it. I will continue going to see Julia as long as I can! read more

She's a pure technician and really takes pride in ensuring every one of my cuts is on point. Besides her amazing technical ability, she's super sweet and super genuine. You can always have just a super cool and super chill conversation that will put you in a good mood after battling your way through chaotic NYC. The space is amazing and all the staff are beyond friendly. In this hyper competitive and impersonal city, it's very rare to find genuine, nice people. I am in NYC for the summer and desperately needed a haircut. I asked my friends for recommendations because I know hair places can be hit or miss and I wanted to avoid a miss if possible. My friend Heather who has gorgeous hair recommended Arrojo and particularly David. I didn't want to spend a crazy amount for a haircut but I am a city girl so I know that haircuts are expensive. But anyway, I called and made an appointment with David and I am soooo glad that I did. I love my hair! So I went in with my decrepid hair and told David that my bangs were a failure and not at all what I wanted and asked him to fix them. So he told me that the issue is that not enough of my hair was bangs and that if I trusted him he could fix them and give my hair some cool angles. It is so great! He made my hair asymetrical which I have to get used to but I think looks really awesome. The best part is just how perfect my bangs are now. I kept getting my haircut and hoping the hairdresser would improve on my bangs but I couldn't put into words what was wrong with them. Now I love them and totally see the issue. I posted a pic of my hair to the pics of Arrojo Studio so you can see what it looks like (I am no creative writer...). It's a little weird to have to put on a robe and that they want you to take off your shirt (at least I got that impression but no one really explained it to me). They put a drape over you so it's not that the robe is supposed to act as that cover...it just confused me. The hair washing is also a bit weird because they massage your head for a while and it seems pointless. David cut my hair only with a razor and he took his sweet time. He built in so many little angles and then dried it and cut it some more. It is exactly what I wanted...at least I think it is. We shall see after I get used to it if I love the asymetrical aspect of it or if I regret saying he could do that. Either way, David is meticulous, nice, and good at his art. First time at Arrojo...was great. I chose Topher since I read reviews on here from people who sound like they have similar hair as me...and he was straight up awesome. Totally friendly and warm, and did my hair SO well. By far the best haircut I've ever had. Ever. And I have very very thick, wavy hair that is just...nuts. And now its pretty. And he gave me a generous amount of freebies and completely in depth explained how to style it with minimal effort : ] As for the salon itself, its definitely a busy place, but its set up in a great way where attendants lead you around and explain whats happening. I saw the most gorgeous set of bangs at a recent Christmas party and the girl told me "Zeph at Arrojo" was due the credit. As I'm always looking for a salon that can make my coarse, thick, cowlicky bangs look soft and seamlessly blended, I scheduled a cut and full set of highlights - with Topher and Floris, respectively (Zeph wasn't in the day I needed to come in so after reading the reviews I settled on Topher instead). First, the color: Floris ("Flo" as Topher calls her) was meticulous and very patient with my dense, waist-length hair, carefully foiling three shades of blonde and one shade of lowlight through every layer. She thought a very subtle "ombre" effect--a technique that leaves the lengths of the hair more highlighted than the roots--would suit me, so I agreed on trying out the look. After highlighting, lowlighting, and several rounds of rinsing, she applied a glazes in two different shades to some areas. The whole process took about three hours but I was excited to see what such painstaking work looked like dry. In some respects, the results were great--very flattering tones for my skin color and a natural overall effect. But I also noticed a few one inch gaps in the color in some places--a few blotches that seemed to have missed getting their highlight (I've uploaded a picture to help illustrate this). I'm not sure what happened but my guess is that she'd juggled too many processes and tones and may have gotten a little lost within all those variables on one head of hair. Each highlight section and tone had to be rinsed at different times, and the glazes had different rinse times, too. I had about four sections of hair all in a different phase of "cooking" and glazing and I think the whole project may just have been overly ambitious for the time-slot. she ended up having to manage several other clients while keeping an eye on all my different processing phases. Given the complexity of her technique and the time constraint she was under, I don't blame her for missing a few spots. I think she's talented and creative but next time I'm going to ask her for just a partial highlight with only two shades. When it's time for another set of full highlights, I'll make sure extra time is blocked out. Topher seemed very experienced with my hair-type--he wasn't afraid to cut into the bulk and create lots of layers to help lighten up the Cousin It look. However, other than trimming up a few inches off the length with scissors, he exclusively used a razor for the majority of the work. Now, because my hair is pretty fried, I don't think that was the best method for creating a smooth finish with longevity; razoring leaves me with a slightly stumpy, dry look to the more over-processed parts of my hair. Overall, though, the cut is excellent. Next time I'm just going to ask for sheers in place of the razor so the layered ends won't look ratty after a month. read more
