I recently visited the fabulous Katherine at Arsen Gurgov's salon thanks to Salon Apprentice and it was lovely! I was in dire need of a haircut and sick of sticking to the same old look so I found Katherine's ad, scheduled an appointment, and arrived at 5PM on a Tuesday. While the actual haircut did not begin until almost 5:30PM due to scheduling (Katherine is a student and was waiting for her class to begin) it was well worth the wait. After a quick consultation, Arsen himself (was not expecting to see him!) stopped by the station to speak with me and be sure I wanted the cut Katherine and I had discussed. 3 hours later my haircut was complete. This was longer than usual since Arsen checked her work every step of the way and taught different techniques throughout. I actually learned a thing or two about cutting hair myself during the process! The salon is massive and takes up pretty much the entire 15th floor. Tons of sinks, a couple of manicure stations, walls of styling stations. Two locker rooms in the back where you can change and also hang your coat. Front desk was amazing and so personable. While the prices are expensive (it's NYC but still expensive) the quality of service you receive here makes it absolutely worth it. I will definitely be back. read more

Truly disappointing haircut and a waste of money. I needed a new stylist for my 3a curly hair because my usual retired, so I decided to give Arsen a try based on reviews and photos, etc. He used a curling iron to style it because it would "look better," which was absurd and lazy. The cut made it so the hair at the nape of my neck was very curly and uneven with the rest of my curl pattern - an issue I never had previously and am now fixing with a new stylist. The cut grew out poorly, and I had to find someone else fast. He was also very rude to an elderly client in the next chair over. Absolutely did not work for me. read more

Arsen is amazing in what he does. Every time I go to Arsen he knows exactly what to do to my hair. My Keratin hair comes out so smooth. He is careful since I have baby fine hair he takes good care of my hair. From cuts to blow dry he always seems to make me happy. I'm a loyal client and I've never met anyone that can do hair like Arsen. He understands hair like no other. He is in the know with everything out there. I once had hair extensions put in by Arsen. My hair stylist of almost 6 years moved to LA a few weeks ago. I hadn't had my hair cut since December and desperately needed help. I decided to try Adrian as the salon is close to my home. Pretty disappointed about my $200 haircut by Jason. He cut my long, thick, wavy hair in a way that made my hair look thin and brittle. Never actually got a haircut that took all the volume and life out of my hair, until now. Also, he spent 20 minutes trying to convince me to get a keratin treatment, which I told him from the outset that I had no intention of getting, as I had done it before and it just wasn't for me. Arsen is a true artist. You can tell by the way he handles the tools of his trade. When you sit in his chair, you are a hunk of marble, waiting for the master sculptor to transform you into a bust of a Roman goddess - at least that's how I feel when I leave the salon. After a recent visit, I was descending into the depths of the NYC subway when a stranger suddenly grasped my arm. "Tell me where you get your hair cut!" she pleaded. "It's gorgeous!" I can honestly say that I had never received such recognition for my hair before. (And I must admit to feeling a little creeped out by it.) Love, love, love the cut I got from Adrian! He had looked at pictures I sent before I came in and even had photos waiting for me when I arrived of suggested styles for my face shape. He took time to answer all of my questions about styling issues. He made sure that every strand was perfect before he was done. Besides my amazing cut (the best part of my experience), I was impressed by the atmosphere at the salon. They have a huge celebrity clientele, but they treat everyone very well. I got the best haircut ever from Adrian . I chose him sort of randomly when searching for a new haircutter -- and I have to rush to tell everyone how thrilled I am with my hair. It's not easy to find someone who takes the care to listen so well, and then cut so skillfully with scissors and measure so that the long layers move and look clean and fresh and great shape .... but are not all spliced and chopped up. I traveled from Boston to NYC for my own version of the "Today" make-over - color by Licari, style by Arsen ( I had long admired his work on the show). Schedules ran very late - my 11:30 appt started with color (phenomenal), then make-up, then Arsen but by then it was 4:00. He was running behind all afternoon & by the time I finally made it to his chair, he was clearly frustrated. Turns out it was his b'day & he was anxious to leave which was abundantly clear by the time I sat down. He barely spoke - when I asked for his suggestions, he asked if I had a photo of myself. All I had was a Drivers License. He looked at his, said "it looks like a wig", said "it's too long", & chopped off about 4 inches without any conversation about options, preferences or a "go for it" from me. He started drying my hair but then turned me over to an assistant so he could work on another client who was waiting. He clearly knew her as he chatted with her. He came back over at the end & spent a couple of minutes on the finishing touches & that was it. He gathered his things to leave. I'm generous in giving 2 stars as Arsen was a huge disappointment. Perhaps if my hair looked great at the end of all that, I would have felt somewhat better but it was a perfectly nondescript bob - cut at exact length where my hair naturally flipped up vs turning under which is how he started. Six wks later, it's beginning to look better. Incredibly disappointed with his attitude, his whirlwind approach, & the result. Factor in flights, hotel, & their rates, it was a very expensive bucket-list item that was in no way worth it - except for the color by Louis Licari who actually spent quite a bit of time getting it just the way he wanted. I've watched Arsen's work for a couple of years & always thought he was the stylist who made everyone look the best version of themselves. Guess I caught him on a bad day! read more

I had a very bad customer service experience at Arsen Gurgov. I had never gotten a keratin treatment before and had naturally many questions on how the treatment works and what he was doing during the treatment process. He seemed very inconvenienced by my questions and brushed many of them off with no response. After very carelessly painting the treatment into my hair in all of 2 minutes, he left me alone in my chair for close to 30 minutes sitting there with my head burning from the treatment. I had no idea where he went he just disappeared. Finally he came back to me and said that the treatment needed to sit on my hair for awhile before he locked it in with heat treatment- this would have been fine if he had mentioned this before he disappeared, meanwhile I sat there wondering where the hell he went off to and why I was left unattended for so long. I had to ask many questions to get information from him about when I could shower, if I could put my hair in a ponytail, etc. This seems to me like very standard information that should absolutely be shared up front, and it was crazy to me that I had to specifically ask these questions to get that information from him. And again when I was asking them he didn't make eye contact with me and seemed to be brushing me off as if inconvenienced by them. Overall the keratin treatment worked well but due to the very poor customer service I will never be returning to that salon. read more

Arsen Gurgov , hairstylist at the Louis Licari salon in New York, has been cutting my hair for the past three years. I decided to write a review because he is such an expert in his field he deserves the accolades. From the moment you sit in his chair you know your in great hands. What I like most about having Arsen cut my hair is that he doesn't pass you off to someone else for the blowout; he does it himself! Many top stylists feel they would rather do more cuts and not take the time to complete their work. Arsen not only blowsout your hair but he makes sure his cuts are complete and precise by doing some touch-up cuttting once your hair is dry . As a result, its very easy to style your hair even weeks after you have left the salon. If you are still not convinced about Asen after reading this review, just turn on NBC's fourth hour of TheToday Show with Kathie Lee and Hoda ( Thursdays and Fridays,in the Fall) to see the wonderful job he does during the Ambush Makeover segment of the show.
