I was very happy to have stopped here and intrigued to learn about the process of Native Yeast Fermentation that Arterra fully embraces. I really liked all of their wines; they are known for big bold reds and I think that is an accurate description. Surprisingly, I also LOVED their Chardonnay. I'm so picky about my Chardonnays and have found I prefer a heavily oak aged flavor to the typical VA stainless steel variety, so I wasn't 100% sold on the description of "subtly accented by French Barrel aging", but that slight kiss of oak was all it needs. This is a really really really good wine! My husband and I ended up buying 4 bottles and know this will be a featured item around the Holidays. Although the winery is quite beautiful, we didn't stay long. They have plenty of space inside and out for picnics, but I didn't see any food for sale, so it was a pretty quick trip for us after our tasting. read more

Right in the heart of Fauquier Wine Country is Delaplane, probably the most wineries in VA with this town name and this one recently opened and should do really well. It's owned/run by a husband and wife where he's the wine maker and she's the artist. They both do very well with their crafts, as we enjoyed all of their wines and the art they have on display. They offer one dry white a sweet and then several reds. The tasting room is AMAZING! It's timber framed and beautiful, with large windows and nice views of the hills, where they will soon plant their vineyard. Customer service was great, with a nice story of how they got started and how they manage to produce each wine. We look forward to going back more in the future! read more

"I'd say it's about time to wine down." I had the pleasure to visit Arterra Wines on a Saturday for the 2nd Saturday wine until 9. Tickets are required and can only be purchased online($15) cover the cost for the live entertainment , the event is limited to 20 people. I would recommend it for date night, girls night out and solo night out! I really love that u get to sip , with a beautiful view, great music and get to watch the sunset. If you worry about bugs, each table has a tiki torch . I chose this winery for their philosophy of clean wine and someone from the group recommended to me. I had the pleasure of meeting Jason the owner. He was greeting guests and had me choose my table. The system for the night was perfect, you just had to put your flag up If you needed service. Plenty of rooms to social distance. Masks are required inside while using the restrooms. I was excited that they were offering tasting flights, the cost was $12.50 for 5, I am a bit greedy so I decided to do 6 which is only $2 extra . My choices were Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Tannat, Mtsvane and Gomariz Souson. They were all good but decided to get a bottle of Cabernet Franc to enjoy there and a bottle of Chardonnay to go. I believe Jason, This winery is small, beautiful and they have few art pieces for sale inside. Jason and kelly were taking care of everyone and did a damn great job! All around great experience. The building is pure craftsmanship - timber frame chalet. Very relaxing, cozy and full of nature inspired artwork. The staff was kind and knowledgeable. I've read many different perspectives about the wine. Everyone's palate is different. However my group very much enjoyed the wines. very good red wine. They have their wine, then a few from Europe too if you want to branch out or miss going to Europe for wine. They do a flight of wine, purchase a glass, or get a bottle, so you have lots of options. They allow you to bring food. There's a huge indoor space (I'm not sure with covid if people are sitting inside), but with the weather so nice it's a pleasure to sit outside. The outside is small and very wooded. They distance their tables (a few picnic tables, some bistro tables). Google marks it as 'not child friendly', but they do allow children. If your kid is really active, they might not like it. There is a hiking trail that I've never been on, but I've seen older kids (teens) going off for a walk. Or if your kid just likes to sit on a blanket and read, then they might like it. For those who worry that with kids around, it won't be fun...the times I've been the kids were really well behaved and just chill'n with their family or reading/coloring. They do allow dogs on leashes. They have bathrooms inside (I think it's just two, but I've never seen a line); I didn't see a baby changing table. read more

We bought one of each; Cab Franc (light but my favorite grape), Petit Verdot (best one we have had to date), and Tannat (pretty rare and first time trying this varietal - Hands down the best even at $49 a pop). I went to a number of vineyards in VA in the same area for tastings, and Arterra was by far the best one. They let you choose any 6 wines (not set to specific ones), and the wine was really good! The cab franc in particular was awesome. They gave decent pours, it wasn't pretentious at all (compared to others in the area), and the people were so nice. Can't wait to return! read more

Went for a girls night and had the time of our lives. It seems really dark and creepy when you first pull up at night but once you walk up you see how beautiful it is. The art on the wall is so beautiful and the people that work there is so nice and funny. On top of that the wines are great! read more

The artwork is gorgeous here. I found myself enamored with it! I like that this winery had something more to offer than wine. The views are also quite nice. What would have been really great is if the tasting counter wasn't so far away from the views. I guess it's that way for a reason, but with such a gorgeous view, I didn't want my back to it. The wine itself was decent. I really liked the tannat. When we came here, there weren't many wines to taste for the tasting fee. It looks like they've expanded their offerings. I wasn't wowed by anything in particular, but would love to come back here to be wowed. Everything seemed solid, just not amazing. But there is definitely reason to return. read more

The wine is actually good, the atmosphere pleasant. Unfortunately I will never be able to come back because they do not allow dogs. This is the first winery I've been to that doesn't allow leashed dogs on the property at all. I had such an amazing experience at this winery. The wines are delicious. The decor is beautifully hand-crafted. The building is gorgeous. Finally, we were served by Lizzie and she is hilarious. It's quite unfortunate because we went to another tasting in the area and I was so disappointed by the service. I realized afterward the server at the other winery was completely adequate and even very friendly - she just didn't have Lizzie's charm or wit. I look forward to my next visit! read more

Great new winery! The winery is run by a husband and wife team. They did a great job with the building and the decor. The decor is filled with art done by the wife, and they are beautiful! There are 6 wines to taste from their tasting menu. The blueberry apple red wine was the group favorite. It's a nice summer-y wine, perfect for making a sangria! The other wines were very good as well! We brought home a bottle of the Chardonnay and the Cab Franc. If you're looking to stay and sit for a little while, you will want to pack some meats, cheeses and other snacks to munch on. Arterra is a lovely winery in a unique setting and offers a lot of potential - however, that potential just isn't realized in the current wines. These - unfortunately without exception - have a long way to go in terms of balance and flavor. I appreciate tartness in wines, but Arterra's offerings lack any counterpoint to their strong, almost balsamic-level of acidity, and left the back of my throat feeling raw. read more

First Vineyard I have ever gave a 5 star rating. The cons are as follows: there really isn't a view to speak of, and the tasting room/art gallery doesn't appeal to me. However, that is irrelevant when it comes to the wines. The pros: THE WINES. He is a very talented wine maker. The Tannat, and Petite Verdot, by far the BEST I have had in Virginia. I am not a member yet, but I will be very soon. If you love wine, this has to be on your to visit list. A little pricey compared to other local vineyards in my opinion, but worth every penny. I cannot wait to follow this vineyard as it grows. Please keep doing what your doing. I am in Sales and I live locally and tell everyone that I can about this place. Had a GREAT experience here! Came on a Friday which was nice because it was almost empty. We got what felt like a very special tasting with the owner as he described to us the whole process he went through to get the winery up and going. It was fascinating. I do not recommend this place at all -- mainly because the staff was rude and we were misled. My husband made a reservation via phone a week prior with the owner, who made no mention of there being a 1.5 hour time limit to our table. We got there -- it was empty (there was another small group and a couple). The first thing the server told us was that we would have to leave within 1.5 hour. We were taken aback as we drove from Baltimore to get there and had we known that; we wouldn't have came. Nonetheless we acknowledged politely and said we would leave before the allotted time was over. The server continued being rude to our table throughout. We asked her to light the mosquito lamp as there were a lot of bugs to which she said you can light them yourselves. Overall, it was not the experience we hoped for and we ended up going to the place next door (so much nicer and better of an experience). Maybe this place was better prior to COVID, but whoever was serving guests this weekend, clearly did not want to be there. Not going back to Arterra. 0/10 read more

I personally feel that this start up vineyard of grapes in the forest is a bit overrated. None of the wines are native the winery. Jason, The winemaker , is just starting his business. I thought that the $15 tasting for six wines is a bit high. All of the grapes are shipped in from Percyville and none of the grapes are grown on the property. The grapes that he is growing now that he says will be ready in the end of 2017 do not look fruitful or plentiful. This is not a total disaster but there are a few other places that might be a better fit for winetasting. read more

Arterra brings together a very unique experience for its patrons. As you traverse the nearly vertical driveway, you're not 100% sure what you're in for nor are you certain this trip would be possible when the snow starts to come. The trees open to a beautiful and rustic tasting room above yet another steep incline beyond the parking lot. The room itself is unassuming, but then you get to the bar. You are greeted by a very warm and informed staff. The Wine Arterra's wine-making half of the co-ownership equation, Jason Murray, has brought a lot of creativity to his venture. While many fans of the traditionally "woolly red" Cab Franc that Virginia offers in spades may be a little taken aback by Murray's view, his version absolutely does not disappoint, and I found myself appreciating the actual flavors all the more without the biting texture. The Chardonnay, and only white offered while I was there, was also made outside of in the typical Virginia style of the heavy oak and buttery feel, but rather in the French style with seasoned barrels making a more subtle texture, and citric taste. The Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Tannat all carried the same wool-less texture, making the crisp, warm flavors stand out, and my husband, a very seasoned Virginia red drinker, found Murray's versions not only delicious, but the perfect compliment to the end-of-summer/beginning-of-fall day on which we had visited. The biggest surprise of the visit, however, was their featured dessert wine, the Blueberry Apple wine. Neither my husband nor myself are terribly in love with sweet wines of any kind, but our hostess assured us that the blueberries would balance the sweetness of the apple. She was right! I never think of blueberries in terms of tartness, but instead as they taste in pancakes or pie or pretty much any other "processed" blueberry affair, but here they are center stage as the "tamer" of sweetness. The cool effervescent wine was a delightful end to the flight. The Atmosphere Now, I don't know if this kind establishment has run into issues with crowding at their bar on a busy Saturday, but if not, I'd be a bit surprised. The sitting areas are large enough, but the bar can only host maybe 10-12 tasters at a time, and while yes, the drive to get out here is an hour plus from most things east, the quality is certainly worth the trip and I hope they build up in response to rising popularity. The view in the back is sparse. This is not your Barrel Oak nor Bluemont spectacular vista, but what it lacks in grandeur, it makes up for in sincerity and hard work. The new vines clinging to the dirt on the mountainside in open space between the unending treeline. Inside, the artist and co-owner, Sandy Gray-Murray, has brought together an absolutely gorgeous array of mixed media and clay creations inspired by the process itself. I found myself wandering, Chardonnay in hand, feeling very connected with her work and the experience her and her husband have gone through to bring us this little wooded shrine to Dionysus, and even though I felt a bit pretentious with the idea of the general act, all the work and wine was so accessible that the entire exchange felt as natural as breathing. Overall, an incredible display of daring wines and stunning artistry. read more

We have been checking virginia wineries off our list, and this is our favorite so far. The location is already great nestled in the woods. The building is amazing, architecturally, making for a very cozy environment. Couple that with the ceramic art produced by the winemakers wife and it's lovely, unique, and irresistible. Now the wine...best I've had in virginia. The winemaker is scrupulously thoughtful, and because he puts so much care into his wine, they really are tastier and more interesting than other wines. This place is really the trifecta - great location, GREAT wine, great art...we are most definitely coming back again and again. Loved this place! read more

The property here is gorgeous, it's up a steep hill tucked in the woods. The wines are more on the dry side, which is what I like. Looked like there was a walking trail near the picnic tables. The tasting room had art from the wine maker's wife. It was all very nice. The tasting room otherwise felt very stiff and cold to me. But that could be easily overlooked. read more

Went to several of the neighboring wineries along with this one and all 3 of my friends thoroughly enjoyed our experience here above all others. Not only were the wines delicious but the experience was genuine and extremely informative. Husband and wife who opened this winery truly understand the art of wine making. Each of the wines had their own UNIQUE taste, we each purchased bottles--our favorites being the blueberry apple wine and dry Riesling !! Highly recommend it. The wines are exceptional. All of the wines are fermented only with the natural yeast that occurs. The winery owner is friendly and approachable. The location is nice, not particularly scenic. Their approach to wine club memberships ids different- buy a case and then you are in the club for a year. The membership comes with free tastings, discounts and access to select wines- perfect for a small winery with limited option. All of the wines I tasted were excellent. I did not try the non- grape wines- next time. read more
