This is a place where friends are made. If you have ever been interested in signing up for a class…read moredon't hesitate. Doing improv has improved my life exponentially and I KNOW I'm a better person for it. You learn how to genuinely connect and listen to other people and I feel that is an art that has been lost since the pandemic. Go also to just see a show. You won't regret it.

First up: parking is plentiful and feels safe and secure. We arrived about 25 minutes before showtime and had a drink at the bar. They have a solid cocktail menu and full bar with plenty of local craft beer on tap. The kitchen closed when we visited. The bartender said it's undergoing a transition and will reopen in a week or two. Staff is friendly and welcoming. In the theatre are cabaret-style small tables and high-tops in back. Table service is discreet and unobtrusive; just tap the little light on the table and a server will come right over. I won't review the content of the show (though it was great !) because performers and troupes change regularly. This is long-form improv and the audience is invited to give suggestions a couple times a night, but no one is put on the spot or spoken to (or about) directly. The show we attended was PG-13ish in content; i'd advise checking notes on a particular performance before bringing children.

First things first: DO NOT TAKE CLASSES HERE THINKING YOU ARE GOING TO GET A JOB... It's just not…read moregoing to happen. This is a great place to go to learn how to make drinks, learn the history behind certain drinks and alcohols and basically learn bar etiquette. But one of the key enticements they offer is their "lifetime job placement assistance". Now, the wording here is the key: see, they don't actually PLACE you anywhere. They simply give you a log-in to a database where jobs are listed. Then you go, apply for those jobs and the interviewer raises an eyebrow at your audacity that you have NO bartending experience and wanted to work at their establishment. See, bartending school isn't the magic "in" you thought it was. You're not going to graduate, find a job right away and the cash tips aren't just going to unfurl on you. Like most other jobs, people want you to have experience, but no one wants to give you your first shot (and take a chance on you) in order for you to GET that experience; it's a terrible catch-22. Most jobs you apply at will reject you outright, offer you a position as a barback or waitress/waiter and have you work your way up or they MIGHT (and that's a big "might") consider you, but they will give you a "bartending exam", which will look incredibly similar to the written mid-term and final the STL Bartending Institute gives you, only it's longer and much more intensive. (Incidentally, the STL Bartending Institute's curriculum covers mixed drinks in great detail, but only skates over beer and wine in a day... These are two things that are intensely covered in the exams most corporate bars will give you as a prerequisite for employment). I'm not saying don't take classes here (or pay the $425 for them), I'm just saying be realistic about the results. Other people will sway you entirely away from bartending school (like the moronic article "Ask Your Bartender: Bartending Schools" by Jefferey Morgenthaler) and tell you that there are other ways of sneaking into the bar system, but the bottom line is this: most corporate bars want experience and want you to work your way up and (from what I gather) most small, neighborhood and dive bars are a pretty close nit bunch and are not easily infiltrated. Only you can decide if it's worth the money and the time (40 hours, 4 hour classes 5 days a week for two weeks) and effort. I'm just telling you what you can likely expect.

The line wasn't too long, but I did notice it's set up a little differently than I remember. They now use more of the building, so the line runs down the hallway and loops into the restaurant, with two ordering counters available. While you're waiting, they have menus to look at and even a QR code if you'd rather pull it up on your phone. We ended up waiting about 10 minutes before ordering. Once we got to the counter, everything moved quickly. The staff member helped us right away and let us know they'd bring the food out to our table, which I was glad hasn't changed. One thing I did notice is that the original ordering/dining area is no longer open for seating, it looks like it's now used for staff and possibly catering/to-go orders. They have their drink station available for self-service and offer sodas and sweet and unsweet tea options as well as water. Luckily, there's still plenty of seating in the newer dining area, plus a good number of outdoor tables if you want to sit at a picnic table and enjoy the weather. Within a few minutes, we heard our names called and our food came out fast. And honestly, it was just as good as ever. I was especially happy with the sweet potato fries, and even though applesauce isn't anything fancy, it's kind of the perfect side for me at Pappy's. I ended up eating about half of my meal and boxing the rest up for dinner later, which is always a win. Overall, such a great spot, and I'm really glad it's so close to work. Definitely still a fan and will keep going back.

My research brought me here to Pappy's. I'm very glad it did. Ambiance starts with a line out the door, literally. You slowly shuffle down a long hallway full of Pappy's memorabilia. Then you make it to the ordering counter, order, and find a table. The dining room is huge, plenty of tables, with a full complement of sauces on each table. The service people at the counter were friendly, and so were the people delivering the food. The food came out quick and hot and delicious. We had baked beans and potato salad for sides, and they were pretty solid. Nothing show-stealing, but no complaints about them whatsoever. And of course, we got the ribs. Tender, juicy, a nice bite and chew, a decent bark, just a really wonderful rib. Better than any St. Louis style rib I've ever had back home in Florida. Other states, hard to say, the jury's out, but in that moment, I was eating a five-star rib. So good. We also got a 1/4 pound of the Burnt Ends. Usually, burnt ends are the king of meats, but I think we've entered the phase of America, where they're just another variety of meat and not necessarily upper echelon anymore. That being said, these were pretty ok. Should have gotten more ribs. Overall, Pappy's was pretty wow. Great local spot with a lot of pride and history, excellent ribs, I will definitely try to come back next time I'm in town.
