What an amazing find! I was starving and overwhelmed with options in St. Vincent's court (the alley behind the main jewelry district) and I turned in when I saw the shawarma plates. Arto greeted me and was so friendly and kind, I felt like I was family. There's no inside seating, but there are tables outside which is where all the action and people watching is taking place. The food was amazing! My husband had the Lula plate which was so amazing and flavorful as well. We were very happy with the food but especially the service. Arto's has decent sandwich for a reasonable price. The meats, particularly the basturma or soujouk and salty and have pickles, so if you aren't a fan of really salty, then you may not like. It's in St. Vincent Court which is a cool historic spot in Downtown LA which has a European vibes - or at least the closest you can get in LA. read more

With so many "fast" food options around this area the thing that got us to eat here was a move right out of the psychology books! The cute European style alley that this place is in has a lot of competition but as we walked by, the man said "hi, come eat here- I have a seat for you with a heater". It was music to my ears because it was a drizzly, cold and cloudy day. So we sat. I know we were at a deli in a downtown alley but we were waited upon like royalty. The shawarma salad was filling and flavorful as was the Philly cheesesteak sandwich. When we walked up to this establishment, we had several choices and it is behind the jewelry District especially the Saint Vincent building. Anyway what really attracted us in the first place is because of probably his name is Arto as everybody saying on their reviews. He welcomed us and said try and here take a seat and so we did. I really wanted some rice Shawarma chicken or beef, and it looks like he's known for sandwiches but that's not what we tried. The photo shows how much we liked the food so much that we had no food left as my friend and I shared a plate of chicken Shawarma and a beef and I don't think this is shredded beef, but minced meat pattie but super tender filled with so much flavor, right amount of salt and straight up yummy with garlic sauce that had the spicy part when garlic is grounded. Have to try that again! We were both stuffed and salad was fresh not soggy plus that HOT pita with hummus was so delicious!! This is our second time here and I finally wrote my review, the only question I would ask is where is the restroom? Cars do come out of this place and it is seated at the sidewalk area and it's kind of pretty neat and it feels like you are not in downtown Los Angeles. So if you ever get a chance check it out! I rarely give five stars especially when there isn't a restroom near, but the food and service really was outstanding! read more

I wandered by abnd was quickly greeted by server. She asked what i would like before I was seated... I went with the lule plate and a drink. I was served rather quick. I was rewarded with a fragrant plate. The server warned me the hot sauce is spicy. Of course this the first thing I tried haha. She was not lying it had a good kick to it. The meat was juicy flavorful, and bit pink? I was ok with that. The bread was delicious. The only thing I was disapointed was the plastic cutlery. 1/3 into the meal poink! the fork break cutting the lule. Luckily there was enough of the handle to continue. This is literally one of the best Philly cheesesteaks I've ever had. I ordered the super Philly cheese steak. I love Philly cheese steak sandwiches and I purchase them every chance I get from anywhere and I've got to say this is one of the best that I've had. The meat is shredded perfectly and it's good quality very tender. The sandwich is Juicy and not messy at all they are also really generous with the amount of meat that they put. The place maybe a little hard to find because it's located in an alley between two buildings but the Sally's filled with eateries and is a nice place. If you want to get there one way to describe it is drive down Hill Street and make a left on 7th Street on your left hand side you will see an alley right behind the corner building, they will be located on the right hand side when you enter the alley you can see a couple of signs and tables outside. The people there are really friendly and nice give it a try I guarantee you'll like it. And the prices are really good especially for what you're getting. Enjoy! read more

The french baguette used was as fresh as it gets super soft. So glad we did! Arto's deli is more of a Mediterranean restaurant than a deli. My husband was staring at the signs out from and Arto comes out to chat with us. A casual comment from my husband that he really wants steak AND shrimp but didn't see it on the menu - and Arto says no problem. He rang us up and we had a great meal outside. I had a gyro with pita - soft buttery pita bread and perfectly spiced gyro and my husband had his steak and shrimp. I'm not sure if this place is family run, but everyone isn't on the same page. No one really knows the menu and charges you on their own discretion. A pita set was suppose to be 6 bucks, but the lady was asking for 2 bucks more... When the order came out, the other boss was looking at us funny for having a half empty plate.... They mumbled to each other, but never did anything. It would have been nice if they gave us the right order... The place is in a really cool spot though!!! My girlfriend and I were walking through the Jewelry District in September 2017 when we literally stumbled across Arto's. Arto himself greeted us like long lost friends. Originally from PA, I know to avoid ALL West Coast Philly Cheese steaks. It only brings disappointment. However, I asked him about it. His reply that I would love it had no ego in it whatsoever. His air of pride and self-assurance was enough for me to try it. It was so good, my girlfriend and I went back the next day too! She got a massive salad and the ingredients were fresh. What's better than the amazing food is Arto himself. We talked for quite some time, got to know him and the history around his little 250 sq. foot deli in DTLA over the last 35 years he's been there. His place reminded me of Europe and the East Coast. L.A. is the land of over-priced trendy restaurants that typically serve bland food. His competition are mostly large corporations.
