Had so much fun at the Rhody Revue Burlesque show last night! AS220 is super cool. They had a band playing in another room and our show was in the black box room. There was one bartender and they were great. Worked really quickly. You can get a glass of white wine for $10! The show itself was a lot of fun. I went with Meg M and my long time friend Morgan. The performers were really engaging and the costumes were amazing. Loved the host too! Cant wait to come back for more events at AS220! read more

Discovering AS220 Food has been a huge high of the past year or so!!! Not only is there menu extremely vegan friendly, but they constantly have amazing specials that they announce on their Instagram, AND have a community meal program where they provide free meals downtown! I am continuously blown away by how delicious their vegan options are. We ordered a delicious feast of cauliflower wings and vegan mac and cheese for New Years Eve and it was the highlight of my day! We got the teriyaki aioli with the wings which was incredible! I loved seeing a line of people waiting to pickup their takeout on New Years Eve and seeing how many people are catching on. AS220 is THE spot! I cannot say enough good things about their vegan mac and cheese. It's perfectly creamy yet crispy with the addition of breadcrumbs, and there is an amazing mac and cheese to broccoli ratio. There are rarely leftovers, but it's always exciting when I get to heat some up the day after our takeout. The service is amazing as well! I am excited to dine in person, but until then, I have no complaints about their takeout! It is truly elevated comfort food! read more

Stopped in for lunch. Procedure: (1) go to the register for the menu, (2) place your order (which might mean letting someone else who knows what they want go before you if you don't know their menu already), (3) get your utensils, (4) find a place to sit, (5) have your food brought out to you. They tell every customer the procedure. It's not natural, but they seem to want to force it on the customers. When I went in, I sat at the counter, then they told me the menu was at the register, and the drinks and soups of the day were on the board. Seems like a lot of work when they can just bring you a menu. I guess they don't want to have wait staff. Anyhow, confusing ordering procedure aside, the food is good. I certainly appreciate it all being locally sourced, and they list the farms on their window. My black bean burger was good. Really soft bread. My cauliflower garlic soup was hearty. Large bowl (for a small) that I couldn't eat completely. If I lived in Providence, I'd go often. read more

As a vegan, i can't believe I've lived in Rhode Island most my life and haven't tried this place until recently. The place recently reopened after a remodel. I like the setup of the place and how you order at the front, they give you a number to put on your table, and bring the food to your table once it's ready. My husband and I shared the teriyaki tofu sandwich and the vegan Mac & cheese with buffalo "chicken". The teriyaki tofu sandwich was my favorite. It was basically an American take on a Vietnamese banh mi sandwich. The tofu was super delicious and flavorful. My only complaint about the sandwich is that the bread was a little over toasted. I was most excited to try the Mac and cheese since that's what everyone raves about. The Mac and cheese itself was pretty good. I really liked the toasty breadcrumbs they put on top of it too. The buffalo "chix" however , wasn't too good in my opinion. I expected some kind of mock chicken, but instead got seitan. I thought the buffalo taste was overpowering for the Mac & cheese. If I were to go back, I'd prob get the Mac & cheese without the "chicken". I also felt the foods were too pricey. The Mac & cheese was $16 and the sandwich was $11. I could get 3 tofu banh mi sandwiches for under $11 elsewhere. For that reason, I don't know if I'll be back anytime soon. They don't have a parking lot so parking can be tough. Coconut curry - watery, not flavorful. The tofu pieces are so miniature similar in size to miso soup. There were a few pieces of broccoli and those didn't soak up the coconut curry. Crispy chickpeas - not even crispy, it was just panfried and there's not much flavor to it either. Mac and cheese - where is the cheese?! It's so dry. Too dry. The breadcrumbs on top didn't help. House made seitan French dip - it's a sandwich that falls apart easily and is also very dry. I thought it was a dip..it's very bland and dry. Roasted portabella - served on a grilled pita bread with melted cheese on top. Nothing could go wrong with grilled portabella and cheese. This was probably the best choice I made from here. I want to start with this review by saying I have been here 4 times this week for the Vegan Mac and chz alone. That's saying a lot. Loaded with flavors your mouth is totally satisfied. The broccoli in it is soft and the bread crumbs give it that crunch in every bite that you love oh so much. Finding even a decent vegan Mac and chz in this state is nearly impossible. So to find one that I'm nearly addicted to is a great thing for me. Making a vegan chz sauce is hard enough alone. However, leave it to Chris to make not only his chz sauce from scratch but his vegan ravioli he makes from scratch by hand. It truly shows how talented he is and how much he cares about producing great vegan food for the 401 community. AS220 Foods menu is actually a good 50/50 range of vegan and non vegan food. I respect that they try to please everyone and we know in restaurants that's hard to do. I have dabbled with other items on their menu before like their eggplant "Parm". Another huge hit with us vegans. The reason I like this place is because it's ran smoothly. Staff is always in a good mood, very helpful and energetic. The cooks are always cranking out food. I see two to three cooks there serving up the whole restaurant food and not having problems. Yet I've worked in restaurants my whole life and see a whole line of 6-7 cooks not being able to do half of what they do. Chris runs a tight ship but you can tell keeps his employees happy. Walk right in and order at the counter. When your food is up they call it out and you eat at your table. They have a bar inside too. Yacht club sodas are the best and they have them for when you want that bubbly soda flavor. They even carry KNEAD DONUTS I repeat KNEAD DONUTS. I can get my vegan donut fix without having to walk all the way down town. That makes this guy happy. All and all if you want a hip trendy place to go grab a bite and maybe explore some new vegan options on a meatless Monday well look no further and give AS220 food a try. I had heard some reallly wonderful things about AS220. I heard the mostly vegetarian food on the menu is really delicious and that it's a wonderful non-profit organization to support. Although I won't argue about supporting a non-profit, based on a couple different dishes I recently tried, I must say, I'm not impressed with the food. I tried both the macaroni and cheese (made with broccoli) and the sweet potato puree. The mac and cheese combines mostly elbow macaroni and some wagon wheels, along with broccoli and some bread crumbs on top. It was alright. I'd give it about 3 1/2 stars in terms of macaroni and cheese. Definitely not the best, but it does fit the bill. The sweet potato puree, on the other hand, reminded me of baby food. Both in texture and flavor. It was soooooo loose and soft. Most potato puree has a bit more thickness and substance to it. This one did not. It also had no flavor. The sweetness of the marshmallows on top was its only saving grace. Otherwise it was really bland and boring. I wouldn't order it again. I'm sure there is more to try on the menu (more popular menu items), but based on a small sampling, I'm really not blown away. I probably wouldn't see any reason to return. I'm sorry to say that, because I do love supporting small businesses and especially those doing good in the community, but for the food, I'll probably just pass. read more

This is such a great place to go if you want to enjoy some dinner and the arts. The food they provide is delicious and it is so great that the provide vegan options! I had the Tofu Cutlet which was amazing. They have a bar available and I was a little disappointed in the wine selection but if you're not a wine drinker there are plenty of spirits and beer to choose from. After dinner I attended a poetry show in their venue that is held there every few months. The show was amazing a filled with amazingly talented people. read more

This is a nice laid-back place to get a good lunch. The food is good, the service is friendly and the atmosphere is easygoing. The prices are not unreasonable for what you get. The block on which it is located is historic, The brick facade blends nicely and is quite attractive. The format is walk-up-and-order. When we visited, there were several specials. Both of us decided on the Chicken Confit. I was pretty happy with my choice as the quality was good and the portion was quite filling. The prices are not unreasonable. With drinks, tax and tip, our final bill was $30 USD. This was $15 per person. For the quality and quantity of the fare, this was not a bad deal. read more

AS220 has something for everyone! It's not everyday you find a place where where vegans, vegetarians, gluten free, and meat eaters can live in harmony. I first came here with a friend a few months back and got the vegan reuben sandwich. The seitan (aka "wheat meat", a high protein, veggie friendly alternative to meat) was perfection. Many restaurants have a hard time getting it right as it often comes out rubbery, so this was a pleasant surprise. Since then I've had the pleasure of trying several of the other vegan dishes - soba noodle salad, buffalo sandwich, and veggie burger and every single one was excellent. The staff is both friendly and welcoming, and they match the creative, eclectic vibe of the restaurant. Once I came in and they were out of seitan so the chef improvised an amazing sandwich with a sweet potato fritter and grilled tofu. If that surprise sandwich told me anything, it's that there is some serious talent in the kitchen and the staff goes above and beyond. Beer list is also great and full of local favorites. Really looking forward to the next time I am in Providence. I will definitely be returning. read more

Dear hipster restaurants everywhere: No matter how mainstream making your customers comfortable may seem, you still gotta do it. I know, you're worried about your counterculture cred, whether ending your conversation with your friend because there's someone at the counter will somehow make you seem TOO eager to serve. And whether without those counterculture points you'll still be able to serve a bowl of salted chickpeas for $8 or a half a chicken breast on a pretzel roll for $12. It's okay, AS220. I come here when I'm looking for a fresh, light lunch. It's hippie food, but good and flavorful. I don't know if it would qualify as "healthy" because although everything is packed with veggies, they use a lot of butter & oil :) One of my favorite lunches was the cheesy-rice-veggie burger, on a salad instead of bread. I don't know if they have it anymore! The rotating menu is a both good and bad. The rice & tofu bowl is so good - and VERY garlicky so be careful if you have to go back to the office! Super filling and for only $7. If I'm here in the evening, I'd get some of their small plates for munchies, such as the chickpeas. I'm not sure if I would come here for just dinner, since I don't think I would be full. If I get right when they open at noon, I can eat and be out within a half hour. Yes. Yes. Yes yes yes yes. Food that is actually good, for a cause that brings tears to my eyes. Let me tell you a story: Four nights ago, I was out with two friends from school. It was my first real meal in Providence, the city I will call home in a few short months. As the freak Type A foodie that I am, I had narrowed the dinner list down to 5 contenders across the DownCity, East Side, and West End neighborhoods, and finally caved to letting AS220 be the inaugural dinner spot. Two of us arrived earlier than the third and ordered a $5 wine and their cinnamon honey ginger-infused vodka at the bar....my wine was just OK, nothing to get too excited over, but the infused vodka drink had been, at the suggestion of the friendly bartender, mixed with ginger beer, creating literally FALL. IN. A. GLASS. It's decorative gourd season yes, but suddenly I want it to be cinnamon-infused-vodka-seasoned all the time. Most memorable bar drink I've ever had the pleasure of trying. Then came the food: chickpeas, sweet potato fritters, roasted tomato soup with goat cheese shavings, and a gorgeous mozz-sweetpotato-lettuce-tomato grilled cheese on ciabatta with a small side salad. Less than $20 in all, and the portions and temperature were perfect. I've always been miffed by the way restaurants serve soup hot and sandwiches cold, or vice versa, but the chefs here know what they're doing. Without a formal table waiting system, the whole place feels so much more relaxed and your wallet can take a breather (or sample another appetizer). As a design-driven non-profit, their seasonal menus have interesting graphics in the borders and calming typography. Don't know why that might influence you in this review, but you never know. Stuff like that makes me so happy. But the whole crux of this story: while waiting for our food, my friends and I were discussing the Providence start-up scene when a girl interjected excitedly, wanting to tell us all about her web-based start-up. She and her friend invited themselves to sit with us, and as locals, proceeded to tell me everything I'd need to know if I wanted to live the good life in Providence. We found out that our new friends were staff at AS220 and coordinated the Youth photography program. As we cleaned the last layer of chickpeas from the bowl, it had been decided that a private tour of the print labs was in order. We took our drinks upstairs, where our dinner companion unlocked the classrooms and gave us an hour-long tour of the facilities. This place is definitely... Different. As soon as you walk in there's a counter on the right and bar on the left with tables separating the spaces. You receive a playing card that will be called out when your food is ready. The food. Omg the food. I'm talking like yummy crunchy perfectly seasoned chickpeas (add Schiracha, you'll thank me later) and their sweet potato fries. Ugh so yummy!!! It's so quirky and tasty and plated so eloquently. The cook/chefs enjoy being watched while they prepare your dishes. The music is fun always whether it's lunch or dinner and the vibe is totally "hip". You do bus your own table (it's the norm there), free water and rolled up silverware on a table in the back of the dining area. Bathroom is always kept clean which I always look for in a restaurant. I do enjoy going there. And when someone asks about a good place in Providence to chow down and listen to live music, I recommend here. There's no place quite like AS220 Foo(d) that we've experienced - A restaurant, bar, art gallery, performance space, print shop, youth center....glancing at their website one could go on trying to figure out what they're all about, which is apparently everything. We arrived here on a Friday night for our first night of a two night stay in Providence, excited about the Water Fire performance the next day and ready to experience the best this pseudo vegetarian restaurant and everything space has to offer. I say pseudo because it's actually listed as a vegetarian restaurant in some places and there are many, many options for vegetarians on their menu, but there are also blatantly non-vegetarian items as well...so if you're a vegetarian, you'll have plenty to choose from, but you might be sitting next to someone putting grilled swordfish into their mouth as well. The place feels like a community center, with a bar and restaurant...we arrived the day after an open mic. poetry slam...sadly they took that sign down while we were dining and put up the dance party sign. I suppose there's nothing wrong with dance parties. (These events require a separate admission fee.) You order at the counter and are given a playing card...when your order is ready they call out your card alerting you to come and pick it up. Don't worry, there are instructions on how to order there you can read if you get confused. But on to the food...that's why we're here after all, the food, no? The menu changes seasonally so the items we had may not be available if you go at a different time of year. In fact glancing at the menu on their website labeled "Summer 2012", just about nothing we ordered is on it. (Writing this in early September, we ate there in early July.) But the menu online looks just as enticing for vegetarians as it was when we were there (several tofu dishes, a house-made spicy seitan sausage and comforts like a veggie burger and grilled cheese.) We started with the Crispy Chick Peas appetizer. They tasted good, nicely seasoned, but not necessarily as crispy as we would have liked. (Hey, it's got "crispy" in the name...so it's worth mentioning.) Our second appetizer was Leek Fritters. These were nicely crispy on the outside with a good quinoa texture inside...the overall flavor was a bit more olive than leek which was fine for me, an olive lover, but not so great for my-wife who is a non-olive lover and would have preferred more leek flavor. For our mains I had the Bánh Mi sandwich...all the rage here in Southern California with Bánh Mi places popping up everywhere...so not so out of the box for us to see this on the menu in Providence...this one had a good and slightly spicy tempeh as the main protein in the sandwich and was served on a hearty bun. My wife had the Mac and Cheese (which is also available vegan). It was a great standard Mac and cheese...spot-on consistency which had broccoli mixed in adding a nice vegetable element to the dish. Also, in the fun department, the pasta was a mix of macaroni noodles and pinwheel noodles. There's also a full bar serving locally sourced New England Brews (12 constantly rotating beers on tap) as well as house-infused liquors, cocktails and more. Proceeds from the benefit the performance space. One little quirk, if you want water, it's serve yourself from a large orange cooler in disposable plastic cups...we thought that a place that clearly has so much conscious to it should have provided reusable cups of some kind AS220 Foo(d) is a great spot with a nice local vibe. There are many options for vegetarians...it's almost a completely vegetarian restaurant...lots of different kinds of foods from uber healthy to, asian inspired and a nice dose of comfort foods insuring that you could have a successful and different dining experience every time you go. It's also fairly inexpensive which is good for everyone. We'd definitely try it again if we were in Providence. This is one of my go-to lunch stops.There is always something hearty and healthy on their menu. This time I had their white bean and garlic soup and the veggie burger. Both hearty and delicious. The soup was a little bland, but they were out of the flavored butter that went with it so they drizzled some olive oil instead. One suggestion: find some people to work the counter who actually like people! I always end up talking to the cooks because they actually have some personality! Maybe it's just bad luck, but I get along with most people and this wait staff is a lot of work. It wasn't busy so there is no excuse. I still highly recommend this place. I love AS220 Food. It's casual cozy deliciousness, a great place to have a long conversation over lunch or dinner. They feature a lot of tapas-style vegetarian-friendly options, one of their best known dishes is their delicious chickpeas. AS220 is casual in that you get your own food from the counter and drinks from the bar, but the folks running it are very chill and helpful. Their draft list is very local and very interesting - and their menu is fairly diverse. If you are expecting a conventional restaurant you may not be happy here, but for the adventurous and young this place is just about perfect. The opposite of pretentiousness. Seating is first come first serve so if they're busy it could be challenging, but I've never had a problem. The short: Hipster but we got no funny looks as we don't fit the profile (well look at me). Some outdoor tables (3, not enough). Parking is a crap shoot. The long: After a movie at IMax I checked Yelp to see what the highest rated restaurant with one $ was. It was this place, and it wasn't far from the mall. My wife and I were out with a "chick-e-tarian". She's like a vegetarian, but she eats chicken and no other meat. My wife and I are carnivores but this chicketarian is like a daughter to us so I thought we'd go to a restaurant that catered more to her liking than ours. The place was easy to find as there is an easy to see sign out front. The parking in front was all taken and we had to make a trip around the block to find a spot. Some metered parking was done through a central meter in the middle of the block where you purchase a ticket then take it back to your vehicle window. The place is clean and Hipstered to the hilt. The menu is right on the counter to the right as you walk in. Which is also right where you order (under the big yellow arrow). There is a "how-to" for ordering on the menu. It's a flow chart sprinkled throughout the menu but easy to follow. Everything looked really good. All of the ingredient combinations that made up the dishes looked like they were well thought out and complimentary. This particular menu seemed to be heavy on spinach but that was fine with us and it's in season. Everything on the menu looked to be in season which means is not shipped from who knows where, or when. Since I saw quite a few references to the crispy chickpeas I decided to get some to share. I don't like chickpeas (nor does my wife) but thought for the price, I'll try 'em. We all loved them. Well seasoned and delicious. Bowl full of them too. We had to take 'em home the serving was so big. They weren't crispy though, which was fine. As for the rest of the foo(d). I could give you the details but the menu is going to change. And that's the great thing about it. It's fresh and local. And fresh is always changing. And it sure tastes like they know what they are doing with fresh, local ingredients. Wood panels, dim lighting, strange Irish music band playing in a corner, vegan/gluten free options.....being so alternative, I was worried that the prices would be exorbiantly high but they're actually pretty affordable for the portions. You serve and clean up after yourself, so I regret tipping so much ahead of time.... I ordered a special of the day-- Brussels sprouts with bacon! Probably the best dish at the table--I also didn't mind my chickpeas. First time dining here and the experience was definitely memorable. They had their fall menu out which is fine with me because there was a lot of sweet potatoes, pulled pork and delicious soup options. A friend and I decided on splitting some things. The crunchy chickpeas were DELICIOUS and we ate every last one. We also got the mashed sweet potatoes topped with marshmallows. They were ok. Probably wouldn't order them again. The potatos weren't sweet so it didn't balance well with the marshmallows. We also got the pulled pork sandwich with apple butter, cabbage slaw and cheese on it. And of course the pulled pork. SO GOOD. I almost wish I got the whole thing for myself. The whole concept of the restaurant is cool. Hipster and definitely environmentally friendly which I love. You bus your own table afterwards and they have their water in a big cooler on a table rather than water bottles. Not a fancy place but it is fun to go to if you're looking for something different. Mom was visiting...next on the list after Federal Hill Italian Food was Hipster Providence Food. I think my sister and I explained it kinda wrong because our mom now seems to think it a type of cuisine...anyhow, she's a huge fan (and even threatened to make stir fried tempeh). I digress...AS220 was, as usual, a fun and delicious experience. After grabbing menus, seating ourselves, and getting over our menu paralysis, we came to a consensus on the sauteed fiddleheads and nettles (with garlic and ginger), raw kale salad (with pickled broccoli, crispy mushrooms, tempeh, carrot/ginger dressing), tomato braised cod (fingerling potatoes, spinach, feta), roasted tofu (shiitake, black quinoa, broccoli, red curry sauce), and pan fried mushroom risotto cakes stuffed with mozz (roasted kale, grilled onions, atwells gold shaved cheese on top). I placed the order at the counter (unfortunately they were out of fiddleheads so I got grilled asparagus instead), traded the menus for the 5 of hearts, grabbed water and utensils, and plopped back down to wait for the chefs to call our card. Our order was promptly ready and everything was piping hot and delicious. I loved the charred tempeh and pickled broccoli in the raw kale salad, all tossed in the zesty carrot ginger dressing. The tomato braised cod was a huge hit - super tender and juicy fish with beautifully caramelized fingerling potatoes. The roasted tofu came with a creamy Thai-inspired red curry sauce that had delicious coconut flavor. Mushroom risotto cakes had an awesome cheesy center and were crispy on the outside. A tad greasy, but the roasted kale made it healthy right? We also had two teas that were fantastic and only $1.50 each! They have a whole list of Farmacy Herbs Locally Blended Teas, of which the Rhode Island Red (Rooibos with nettles and lemongrass) and Biker's/Athlete's Blend (Nettles, horsetail, ginko, alfalfa) were phenomenal. Too good to be true? My only gripes with the place is that there can be a wait if you go during peak dinner hours, and the corner next to the water/forks is super cold (AC is right there I think). Also, their menu can change on the spot (had to sub rice for black quinoa, did not have fiddleheads...) Yeah, just being super picky about an otherwise awesome downtown gem. Our whole meal was only around $50. Ridiculous. Before I ruin any more surprises, you should just go eat for yourself. read more

I've liked the food I've tried from here. It's all been standard bar food, it does the job. Whenever I go it's always busy because it's before or after a show but I manage to get a drink at the bar in a reasonable amount of time. The prices are fair and the drinks are always good. The venue is awesome though kind of small, if it's a band I usually bring ear plugs. I've met the guy who founded it, he is really interesting. Definitely a fun place to hang out. read more

This place has such a great vibe, when you walk in there is the an open kitchen with amazing local food options with plenty of vegan choices. To the left is the bar area which serves a great selection of craft beer on tap. It seems that you can order food and take it to the bar area or grab a beer and take it to the kitchen area. Everyone there seems really happy to be there. I would have loved to try their food and will definitely be back for it. There is another section with a stage which I believe has live music periodically. If you are looking for a casual place to grab a beer and locally sourced food, this is a great stop! read more

In the downtown art district of Providence RI sits a little jewel called AS220 Food. This little place packs so much high quality flavor into your meal and it's not any bigger than an average apartment. However they produce some of the highest quality and flavorful food I have had in awhile. I had the Spicy Tomato Soup with herbs and Goat Cheese. The tomato flavor pops and the spice kick is not too overpowering, the goat cheese adds a bit of acid cutting flavor to level this soup at a flavor height of 50,000'. The next item I had was the braised lamb in tomato sauce. This is served on a pita with arugula and yes more goat cheese. The flavors were big and one did not overpower any others. They all worked is harmony. To say I was full is a bit understated. I was very satisfied and you will be too as they have dishes catering to Vegetarian and Vegan to full on Carnivore. If ever in downtown Providence RI or passing through (not hard to do in the smallest state in the U.S.) you must stop in and have a great meal.
