There are three important things you need to know about Asahi: #1: They have soft serve ice cream on the weekends (currently green tea and black sesame flavors). #2: They sell HOMEMADE STRAWBERRY MOCHI on Thursdays (limited quantity). This is the best mochi I've ever had. #3: They make bento box lunches on Thursdays and Fridays (and maybe Wednesdays?). this small market has bombbbbb homemade onigiri. don't be shy, you can ask them to make fresh onigiri for you if the baskets are empty. i tried the karaage mayo, shrimp tempura, and salmon kombu onigiri. the standout by FAR was the shrimp tempura onigiri - perfect amount of salty, savory goodness!! i also enjoyed the karaage mayo, but it did get a little too salty at times. i can't forget the shrimp tempura... i kept going in for more.. so fresh and simple yet flavorful and fulfilling !! highly recommend ! :~) read more

An absolute hidden gem! They have everything ranging from packaged goods, teas, candies, snacks, bread, and even beauty products all from Japan. The best part about Asahi is their green tea and black sesame soft serve on the weekends! I love matcha flavored things, and this soft serve was the best matcha ice cream I've ever had. You can see the matcha powder throughout the soft serve, which makes the flavor super intense while still maintaining its creaminess. They also have homemade red bean strawberry mochi on Thursdays, which is absolutely delicious. They're a pretty decent size and the perfect way to get through to Friday. I know that they also sell bento boxes Wednesday-Friday as well! I haven't tried them yet, but I'm sure they're delicious! Will definitely be a regular visitor here! read more

This place needs another review like I need a another dog. But, I'm so happy right now. I've been extremely nostalgic lately about my time in Japan. Probably something to do with a friend fluttering around Tokyo and posting on her Instagram. But I digress! I finally popped in to Asahi today to grab some basics - seaweed, dashi, noodles, rice, and my favorite barley tea. That stuff takes me back and I could drink gallons if it. Thankfully, they sell gallons! The store is well organized and not as chaotic as the typical market. Prices are comparable and they even have some produce! The ready to eat items are great and I want to swing back by for a bento box during lunch. The staff is extremely helpful and kind. I like this place! They're clean and modern. I've gotten plenty of recommendations from my friends to check this place out. Overall I do have to say that the prices are only the higher end which is what bumped it down from a 5 star. They have a cute mini cafeteria where you can eat, and their onigiri tastes very motherly. With ease, it was love at first sight. When you walk in, you're greeted warmly (in Japanese, too!) and they have some cute items that catch your eye when you go in. The store is not too big, but yet it feels comfortable and I walked through this shop with ease. They make Onigiri which can range from $1-$3-ish per one. If you're interested in making sushi (my reason for coming) they have sushi grade fish ready for you to defrost and cut fresh. Also, to my surprise, they sell fresh vegetables - not your regular kind but ones need to complete most Japanese/asian recipes. They also sold some baked goods, had a delicious section of sweets (some that you can only find in Asian stores) and was super happy to see that they sell Shirataki noodles! That made my day-I was worried I'd have to order them online, but happy that I can come visit this awesome shop when I need more. The only downside is that this shop closes at 7pm during weekdays - which can be hard to get to through Austin traffic after you get off work. Although, this place is worth sitting through all the traffic. I can't wait to visit again! read more

This store is amazing! A general store full of all my childhood Japanese treats and food; they have everything I need to cook a traditional meal: Soba, udon, tofu, daikon, enoki mushrooms, Japanese sushi rice, along with chopsticks and bowls; even keychains, charms, lucky cats, and pastries that look like Anpanman! Wow, what an awesome place. After an 8 day visit to Tokyo this Spring, I wanted to try cooking a few of the dishes that I liked most. The Asian Supermarket didn't have much and no one to help either. This sparkling clean little store has nice, friendly, helpful people who will show you where things are. They have a lot of authentic Japanese stuff. They had everything from cosmetics, sodas, snacks, rice, ramen, and even trinkets! They were nice and clean inside. The way the store was organized was very nice to have a look around without feeling like you were in a small store with minimal square footage. The cashier was so friendly and if you want to feel like you are in a little store in Japan then this is your place. They have plenty of parking outside, too. The pricing is a bit high so a lot of their stuff is cheaper at Han Yang Market if they carry it but I would still come here to buy many of their things. Not to mention I would come here to feel like I am getting more bang for my buck when it comes to being able to have a look at tons of authentic Japanese products all in one place! read more

We frequent this place at least once a month and have been going here for the past year at least. It is very clean and well kept. The main reason we first started coming here was the sushi grade fish. Escolar (my fave), salmon, tuna (even Himachi). Very decently priced and flash frozen so trustworthy. No worries about getting sick. The frozen fish section only takes up one small shelf in one of the freezers. The rest of the store has a bunch of other options. We get the ramen in the freezer and they have my favorite brown sushi rice. Price for a large bag of rice is comparable to the the asian market off Research Blvd and this place is much cleaner. read more

I'm so excited about this place. Compared to Austin's restaurants that sell some Japanese treats, this place is so much cheaper to get everything that you probably crave. I got mochi ice cream, takoyaki, gyoza, sushi ingredients, melon cream soda and onigiri. Everything is delicious and fun to make at home. They also had a good selection of beer and sake. It's a small place, but it has most of the stuff you'll need! And of course, their soft serve ice cream was phenomenal! read more

In Austin it seems pretty difficult to find specific japanese products like omochi or aonori for example in any of the Asian grocery stores. This store carries them but the price is double of anywhere I've ever shopped. Like natto at $5! I'm used to paying $2-3. I think they are over staffed for such a tiny store which might be affecting prices. I don't like spending money here but am forced to for specific items. I wish I had found out about this place sooner! Normally when I need to get supplies for my Asian-meal cooking, I go to the MT Supermarket, but it's so far away from where I live, so the long drive discourages me from going there regularly. I have always been an admirer of Japanese cuisine, and about a year ago, I came across a couple Japanese cooking channels on Youtube and became hooked, and would try to recreate as many recipes as I could. Asahi Imports has a few things that I haven't been able to find at other Asian grocery stores in town, namely fresh greens. They had Shiso leaves and treefoil leaves(which are called something else in Japanese, but they look like cilantro, yet taste totally different I'm sure). The Japanese cooking videos I watch use a lot of these greens in recipes so I was happy to find them here. Asahi gets all their fresh produce from California, which makes sense, it's the closest viable source for these kinds of items. The fresh produce selection is pretty small, but they had a lot of the most common items you see in Japanese dishes. They have a good section of frozen and dry goods. I was happy at first to see they had what I thought were fresh ramen noodles, but then realized they were frozen, idk, I feel like if you threw the lump of frozen noodles into boiling water, they would just turn to globby mess and wouldn't separate, but maybe not, I guess you'd have to just try it out. They DID have naruto maki, those swirly fish cakes you always see in ramen noodle soup bowls? Which is awesome. I make different Japanese noodle soups from time to time and always wish I could have those fishcakes. I was kiiinnnd of hoping they would have a larger frozen meats section, that wasn't just fish, but alas that was all they had, frozen seafood items. I was in NYC last month and went to a Japanese grocery store pretty similar to this. They had frozen raw meat that was thinly shaven, like cold cuts, which is something the Japanese use a TON of, but it very hard to find here, believe me, I've tried, MT supermarket DOES have thinly sliced fresh meats, but as I said at the beginning of this review, it's a bit of a hassle for me going all the way up there. Sadly, Austin just isn't a big hub for Japanese grocery stores, I vacation to San Francisco and NYC every year and am jealous of what they have available to them there, but all in all I was satisfied with my trip to Asahi Imports, I was able to get everything I needed to make a dinner-meal, and would go back again to get other things in the future, it's only a 10-15 minute drive for me, compared to the 30+ minute drive to the MT Supermarket. read more

My partner grew up in Japan and after visiting myself I fell in love with the country, the culture, and the FOOD. Finally able to make a stop at this cute little Japanese store. If you ever wonder is it worth stopping by even though you could just go to Hmart or 99 Ranch, I would say "YES". As these two big chains might have a great selection on Japanese products but Asahi carries things you will never find at those two big grocery stores. I was able to find some Japanese curry (for children) that Im looking forward to try and see how my kids like it as the regular curry is still too spicy for them. I just had lots of fun looking around (even though its a small store). They also sell bento boxes and onigiri freshly made. Unfortunately, they don't make bento boxes on Sunday so we weren't able to try them (even though I heard great things about them). But their onigiri were solid! Seasoned well and the rice was perfectly sticky without being mushy! I would definitely like to come back for their bento boxes but they informed us that they are remodeling their kitchen which will also change their daily menu. Great find in Austin! read more

Love this place. Friendly staff and a great selection. Sometimes I get a little overwhelmed when I go to an import grocery store, so I wanted to share some things I love there: 1. Their mustard greens onigiri. I've tried a bunch of their onigiri and the mustard greens is #1. 2. For a savory snack, I go for Jagabees (the butter soy sauce variation). They're hard to find in ATX, but sometimes show up here. 3. For some sugar, I get the mochi covered green tea ice cream. It's gooey and chewy and subtly sweet. Keep up the good work y'all! read more

This was a really cool venue that a mentee of mine took me to. He bought me some ramen that his favorite YouTuber likes and it was actually really good. He also showed me some interesting Japanese coffees and the one I bought was really gritty and undrinkable. However, the staff was super helpful and the gift options are limitless here.
