Chashu Pork Filled Guo Bao and Salmon Sashimi
    Angelica L.

Overall: 3.8/5 We've ordered from here a few times and the food isn't bad. They also have 20% off hot food and sushi after 8 PM which is a nice perk. Yakitori ($4.99): Came with two skewers of tender chicken but we didn't really like the flavors. Chashu Pork Filled Guo Bao ($7.99): The buns are fluffy and the chashu pork slices are a good size but they were a bit overcooked and didn't melt in your mouth. The flavors were just okay too. 8 Piece Salmon Sashimi ($12.99): Wow, this was super fresh and honestly better than some of the surrounding sushi restaurants. Best thing we had here and worth coming back for alone. We also ordered a regular platter ($89.99) for New Year's Eve and had it delivered. It fed 4 people with a little leftover which was great. The platter came with a variety of maki and rolls including Eel Avocado, Salmon, Yellow Tail Scallion, Spicy Salmon Crunch, Spicy Tuna Avocado, Sweet Potato Avocado, Salmon Avocado, California, Black Dragon, and Rainbow. They were all alright; I think their sashimi is better so I recommend that over the maki or rolls here.

HokkaiSan is such a fun spot, kind of like a Japanese-focused Asian snack market with way more personality than your typical grocery store. They carry a great selection of snacks, drinks, and even alcoholic beverages, so it's perfect if you're looking to try something new or just grab a few unique treats. It's not really a full grocery store, but that's part of the charm. Curated, hard-to-find goodies. They also have fresh, to-go sushi that's honestly so good, super fresh, flavorful, and surprisingly high quality. Another huge plus is that they're open late and makes it an ideal stop for late-night snack runs (think cup noodles and more). It's definitely one of those places where you want to try a little bit of everything, even if you have to hold yourself back a bit. I definitely recommend checking HokkaiSan out!

I am so glad that we have a place like HokkaiSan in Austin. The city really lacks a lot of good classic decently priced Asian businesses but HokkaiSan checks off all these boxes. They have a limited grocery selection but their charm mostly comes from their snacks and the inhouse food. My friend and I came here for lunch one day and we got sushi, takoyaki, bao buns, and a salmon bowl which were all amazing and reasonably priced. The salmon bowl was my favorite as each piece was so fatty and fresh, it didn't have a fish smell at all. I will definitley be coming back.

This is a small Japanese grocery store in downtown Austin. I was craving a light dinner one night and stopped by this spot to grab a few sushi rolls! The selection of fresh sushi and Japanese entrees was impressive, as was the quality. The prices are fair and the staff are also friendly. So glad this exists when you need a quick meal :)

A true gem of Austin. Delicious and high quality Japanese snacks and meals right at your fingertips. If you even remotely enjoy Japanese food/culture, this is well worth the visit.

What a cute store. Too bad it's on Congress where you have to find parking. I'd come here to satisfy Asian snack cravings if I don't want to drive 40 mins up north. Great service as expected.

Love this shop, great for fun treats and my favorite Kit Kats! All kinds of flavors, and they have other fun snacks. Chips, sweets and a few made food items. The store is always clean and organized, simple music playing as well. The staff is friendly and helpful.

Sushi is a reasonable price for downtown, I would recc eating it nearby or bringing a lunch box to put it in.. lots of options. Fresh fish like salmon and combo. Great spot for a quick lunch if ur feeling something grab and go! Service great, Grace was so awesome in helping me decide between all the sodas. They have white peach Pepsi ! The vibe was so cute and there was Japanese decorations everywhere.

This bodega has it all! It's small but packs a punch with so many products. And though they carry a lot of great stuff, it's not too much, or overpacked, etc. Super clean store with great service. Can find lots of favorites here (see my pics from a couple weeks back) from candies and treats to drinks, sushi, mochi, ice cream, and more. It's one of my favorite stops when walking from my apartment into downtown. Really a fun shop to pick up things you love, need, or want. I can sum it all up with two words: Super Yum.

This little store is super cute! I've walked around downtown many times and never saw it until recently so I wandered in. The staff told me it's been open for about 6 months or so (7 now at time I'm writing this). It's not a big place but I like the selection. They have a lot of premade stuff including sushi and kimbap. The prices are pretty reasonable, I bought an eel kimbap and it was like $4? They have lots of ramen and Asian snacks too, overall just a nice little place for snacks or a light meal. The sushi costs what sushi costs; the cheaper containers are $12-16 but they have bigger ones that cost more. Unfortunately since it's right on Congress there isn't much parking other than the handful of spots in front which are paid unless you're there M-T after 6pm.

They offer a wide selection of imported candies and snacks, along with sushi, Japanese cold appetizers, and hot bento items like gyoza, soup dumplings, and teriyaki chicken. I ordered a toro combo. It was good--the toro had a clean, mild flavor, but the rice was a little off to my taste. The interior is very clean, but there's no seating inside, so we ate on the benches just outside the store. There are only two benches, and while we were eating, someone had to stand because there wasn't enough space. I understand that this store is primarily grab-and-go, but there seems to be a need for more seating. I think it's great that you can easily pick up Asian snacks while passing through this area, but I wish the selection were more curated--I didn't see many of my favorite snacks, and some of the treats I shared with friends ended up being their favorites.

I dropped by on Wednesday around 11:30 AM hoping to pick up a hot snack after hearing about this place through Instagram. I was really amazed with the variety of Kit Kats they served. Lots of Japanese ramen, noodles, chips, crackers, cookies, and candies. Lots of sake and a variety of beer for purchase, along with non-alcoholic drinks. You can get much of your cravings satisfied here. Grab a quick lunch from here. They have hot food like tonkatsu, dumplings, yakitori, bao bun, spam masubi, and much more. There's a variety of onigiri. They also have some fresh sushi selections, both sashimi and nigiri plus rolls. They even have sushi party trays that can be ordered in advance. I grabbed the six pcs nigiri sushi pack for $13.99. Nice cuts of yellowtail, tuna, and salmon. Felt this was worth the money. The eel and the spicy tuna onigiris were both really good, nice portion of meat per rice ratio. The spam and egg masubi was yummy! The chicken yakitori hit the spot to curb my hunger before we made it to our lunch reservation elsewhere. Parking can be challenging, as it's in the busy downtown area. Prices are reasonable and service is friendly. There are some standing countertops outside the store along with two sets of picnic tables and benches for a quick bite. Note that there is a line of people if you hit the lunch rush so plan ahead. Otherwise, expect to spend some time browsing for some cool snacks and drinks.

This is another gem in Austin!! We stopped here to pick up a quick lunch and the fish was SO fresh!!! There is a nice little seating area right outside the store to stop and eat. The employees were all so wonderful and prices were reasonable for the quality of the fish.

Coffee, though, was more expensive compared to other international stores I've been to. What really stood out in a bad way was the attitude of the staff. My main complaint is that it can be overwhelming, especially when you're trying to find one specific thing. The other issue is that so many items have mislabeled prices or none at all. This can be challenging when you're trying to stay in budget while faced with more options that you can imagine. Also, fresh prepared items don't necessarily have their ingredients listed which can be scary for less adventurous eaters. And I didn't know what to expect my first visit. I thought I was going into a mini Japanese version of H Mart or something, but nope. This is very much a Japanese CONVENIENCE STORE with a little extra bonus on the side, so adjust any expectations. SIXTY PERCENT OF THE STORE IS NOODLES. Like WTF...is this a noodle headquarters? It felt unbalanced...like I had walked into the wrong store and wasn't supposed to be there. So many noodles, it scared me. I expected a variety store. Carry on. The layout is also a bit confusing for such a small space. I genuinely wasn't sure what areas were designated for customers and what areas were for employees...at one point wandering way into the back. My bad. They've got a solid selection of imported goods. Slightly pricey, but this is expected since they offer quite a few niche items you can't find everywhere. Still affordable, though. I HAPPILY grabbed some black sesame latte mix to whip up iced lattes at home as well as some black tea flavored soy milk. This is what you come to these stores for! The niche items. Now to the soft serve: Flavor-wise? Good strong black sesame flavor. Texture? Not so great. This was very icy and not creamy at all as I had hoped. The online pics were deceiving. Plus there were clumps in it that should've been blended out. However, it was refreshing and I could MAYBE see myself returning on a hot day for more if I'm close by. They only offer it on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It's good, but no need to run for this. You can walk. Lol. It scratched the itch but I'm not running back for it. All in all, not an everyday stop, but an "I'll see you when I see you" spot. Know what I mean? 3 stars.
