You cannot beat the fresh seafood and ingredients here! Chef Nobu has some amazing knowledge and creations that will easily make this your favorite place for the most special and memorable outing. Four of us dined at the counter on a Sunday afternoon where we could watch Chef Nobu's masterpieces come to life. He has great skill in slicing, creating and plating. His specialty seafood actually come fresh from Japan! My friend and his partner know Chef Nobu well due to their frequent visits so there was very little communication about what we wanted since they are regulars. I was the only one in our group who doesn't eat raw fish so everything he created for me was cooked or seared nicely. Our beautiful chef's choice dishes started with four appetizers on a pretty plate for each of us. Mini chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) with tiny pieces of veggies inside, next to it was a shu mai, then a piece of chicken karage, and finally thick cucumber slices with prawn and a small dollop of flaky fish. Everything was superb. Next came four pieces of rolled sushi. We had watched him expertly (and quickly) slice up a cucumber shortly after we arrived and inside of our sushi was that cucumber. On top of each roll was lightly battered tempura fish. These were my favorite. It was a lovely combination of delicate fish and veggies. Our third dish was sliced beef with brussels sprouts flavored very nicely. Definitely a heavier dish than the other two and a different taste sensation. Fourth dish was a 5-piece sushi plate for each of my three friends. As far as I could tell, it looked like two types of tuna, Hamachi (white fish), salmon and scallop. Chef Nobu knows how to make nigiri perfectly with small sushi rice under each generous slice of fish. He made me a 2-piece seared nigiri plate with Hokkaido scallop and salmon. It was delightful. The whole experience was such fun and intriguing. I loved being surprised by the dishes Chef Nobu served us. It was an intimate and entertaining meal especially to have shared this experience with good friends. Thank you Chef Nobu and staff. Interior is super clean and decorated warmly and tastefully. The server was attentive and very polite. She brought us all green tea and removed our dishes promptly. Parking is always a challenge near the plaza but if you don't mind walking, you will eventually find a spot. The restaurant is located conveniently across the street from the town square. read more

This evening's meal was disappointing, especially at this price point. I ordered the omakase tasting menu, and at roughly $175 total, the experience fell short of expectations. The appetizers started the evening on uneven footing. The first course was acceptable, though the vegetables seemed tired, as though they had been pre-sliced the day before. The second appetizer -- boiled fatty eel with cabbage and carrots -- was bland and forgettable. In hindsight, I should have sent it back. The tempura was similarly underwhelming. It felt indistinguishable from what you might receive as part of a lunch special at an average neighborhood Japanese restaurant. At this level, I expect a lighter, more delicate batter with a crisp, almost ephemeral texture. The nigiri was good, though not exceptional. One puzzling choice was the use of chopped scallions on every piece. The piece topped with truffle-infused butter was theatrically seared tableside using an oversized torch that looked like it came from the plumbing aisle at Home Depot. The presentation felt unnecessarily aggressive and distracting; a smaller culinary torch would have been far more appropriate. That said, the ahi tuna itself was outstanding -- probably the best slice of ahi I have ever had, and easily the highlight of the meal. Dessert was another miss: an eggy bread course that tasted as though it had been prepared days earlier and stored under plastic wrap. Oddly, one of my biggest frustrations was the absence of iced tea. Virtually every Japanese restaurant serves iced tea, so its omission felt strangely out of touch. Service was efficient but impersonal. Courses arrived too quickly until I specifically requested more time between dishes. There was little warmth or engagement throughout the evening. I've had excellent meals at Asahi Sushi in the past, which made this experience even more disappointing. Unfortunately, this visit did not justify the price, and overall the meal fell far below expectations. read more

A friend and I recently visited on a Sunday for lunch and it was surprisingly quiet inside. What did we order? To start: -Agedashi - Deep Fried Tofu & Eggplant with Konbu Dashi Broth. Top with Green Onion & Arare Cracker. *the tofu is light and delicate sitting in a delicious broth (that I wanted to drink but didn't). Highly recommend this! Then 3 Signature Rolls: -Tiger Roll Inside: Fried Shrimp, Cucumber Top: Unagi, Shrimp, Avocado, Teriyaki Sauce, Sriracha Aioli, Garlic Mayo & Tobiko -Crazy Ninja Roll Inside: Cucumber, Shiso & Spicy Tuna Top: Hamachi, Sriracha, Sriracha Aioli, Green Onion -Sonoma Inside: Tempura Asparagus, Zuccini, Carrot Top: Tempura Onion, Micro Green, Tomato, Teriyaki, Tempura Flakes, Aonori Powder We loved all 3 rolls. I don't do much sushi in the states let alone sushi in small towns. Tried this place out on Friday of Lent to give it a shot. Small menu selection but great Happy Hour options! Went crazy there and stuck to nigiri. Typically when trying a new sushi spot, chirashi bowls give me an idea of their fish quality and freshness. Sadly this was not an option. The Fried tofu and eggplant was great and the hand rolls ok. Had salmon skin and soft shell crab. Surprised with the fragrant leaf I usually see in Korean foods. Nigiri- pleasantly surprised! Apparently, their nigiri and Omasake fish is flown in from Japan every Thursday. They'll torch anything you want tableside as well.Opted for the salmon trio in which one was actually Ocean trout looking like salmon. Again that fragrant leaf was hidden in that which threw me off but not unpleasant. Again not a big selection. Would've been nice to see fatty tuna and salmon belly. Overall, fish quality was great for nigiris. Tried my fiancé's roll, fish quality was definitely not the same. But the roll sizes were very large. If you come here, stick to the nigiri. read more

The owner and chef, Nobu, helped me to create a fabulous menu for a catered dinner for our family of 10 at a lovely home we were staying at in the Santa Rosa hills. He was patient and kind and the appetizers, soup, sushi (we ordered multiples of six different roles), and sashimi (multiples of 3 different fish) were fantastic and the sushi/sashimi beautifully presented on Nobu's black and red lacquer platters. The fish was melt-in-your-mouth fresh and flavorful. The delivery was on-time and the overall cost for the dinner was incredibly reasonable and less than half of what a private chef would have cost. Sushi rolls were fluffy and delicious. However, they were served without pickled ginger which was provided to our table per our request at an extra charge and some attitude! The portion of the seaweed salad was much smaller than many other Japanese restaurants considering its $8 price. The restaurant was cozy and cute in downtown with Street Parking within a couple blocks. The service on the other hand was bad as our waitress was not only unfriendly but somewhat rude. The servers and chefs offer great service and are extremely friendly, even offering suggestions if you're not sure of what you want to order. I was way excited to see that they offer a sushi burrito. I called ahead and went to pick it up. The restaurant looked nice, the food was ready in a timely manner, and the lady who helped me was friendly. Once I got to my car I took a peek in the bag to make sure my order was correct before I left. What I saw inside made me do a double take. I paid $17 for a "burrito" that was disappointingly small(that's what she said). I've gotten them elsewhere and they were proper burrito size, but this was ridiculous. Last Friday, my wife and I had to meet friends coming up to Healdsburg for our older daughter's baby shower. Our 12-year-old daughter and her friend wanted sushi for dinner, so my wife walked them down to Asahi before rejoining our friends. And Asahi took it from there. When we went to pick them up, they could not stop talking about the experience. They said the staff was so nice and helpful. They said the food was amazing (and these are two girls that are very experienced with sushi). As a parent, I was just amazed that the restaurant not only didn't treat them like children, but they went out of their way to embrace them and ensure they had an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives. From there we got quite a show, watching the chef/owner create a plethora of unique creations. Everything was delicious.
