When I lived in Rohnert Park, I often would stop at the original Shige Sushi restaurant in Cotati - this is 10 years ago. I always had a fantastic experience there, with fresh fish, delicious rolls, fantastic personable, family - feeling service. When they opened the Sonoma restaurant, I had moved out of town into Petaluma. The Cotati restaurant is still there and thriving, but the Sonoma location offers a little more room to go along with the same delicious food and service. On this particular day, we ordered miso soup, tempura vegetables, three kinds of nigiri -- salmon, albacore and hamachi, and two rolls: Cotati Roll which featured shrimp, crab meat, spicy tuna and then also a spider roll, which is softshell crab based. The food arrived quickly and was extremely fresh and delicious. I would say the fish is 8.5/10 -- it wasn't perfect for me like Sake 107 in Petaluma, but it was quite excellent still. Presentation was perfect, there was a nice amount of wasabi and ginger present. The tempura vegetables were done just right. Delicious, not deeply heavily fried, but still crispy and yummy. There is wine, beer and sake by the glass or bottle. I had a glass of rosé, which was lovely and dry, appropriate for this food. The restaurant dining area is inviting, clean, well decorated - - see the photos. You feel welcome. I wasn't a fan of the music that was playing if I'm being honest, so a note to the management - rap music doesn't really suit the dining experience. But I was generally able to overlook that and it didn't take away from my five star rating. The bill was more than fair for all the food that we had. It's not the least expensive sushi I've ever had, but for the quality it is definitely a good value. If you are craving sushi in Cotati or Sonoma, give Shige a shot. Well.. I actually came to this place by accident.. We were hungry and I thought I was going to the Japanese ramen place.. Then after I sat down and read the menu I was like... Dang it.. Oh well.. Well I am glad we stayed. Nice cozy place and friendly staff. Again reminded me like back when I was in Okinawa. Ordered tekka Maki roll and takoyaki for starters. Tekka Maki was very yummy. Some of the better quality tuna then I usually get back home.. Takoyaki came after main dish was served.. But it was also yummy. Full of flavor and nice pipin hot. Ordered the karaage chicken bento (no more spicy noooo), salmon tobiko Don, and king mong bowl. Oooh the smell of karaage brought flash back Okinawa again. It was yummy also.. Nice light crispy and juicy and tender chicken. Waitress was nice enough and made her own spicy Dippin sauce just for me. Salmon tobiko bowl was also very yummy. Seared salmon was very tasty. The king kong bowl was also yummy. Nothing special.. But shrimp and soft shell crab in the bowl was good amount. More pricier than other dish but it was yummy. Ended up ordering 2 more order of tekka Maki Over all the service was awesome, food was excellent. I would give this place 4 and half star.. Too bad app don't let me give that extra half point. We are in Napa and drove to Sonoma for some sushi. Located within a shopping mall, with lucky, Panda Express, etc (no judgement), Shige has a legitimate Japanese chef (Shige Mori) that brings real Japan to Sonoma. FRESH. AUTHENTIC. FAMILY. Made with care from the finest seasonal ingredients, presented in an artful composition, and served with deep respect, Shige Sushi & Izakaya brings the real Japan to Sonoma Valley. There are the staple items that catered to the American palate such as the bigger sushi rolls, but if you dig deeper in the menu also featured the more unusual fish as well as small plates and traditional donabe. We came here on a Saturday around 5:30. We ordered the karaage, dynamite roll and mixed tempura Everything was freshly made and tasted great. The mixed tempura had three shrimp and a great assortment of onion, green beans, zucchini, carrots, bell pepper. It was definitely plenty for two. The karaage was also nicely fried and still moist not dry. The dynamite roll had a good amount of crab meat on top. Everything was great. Definitely will miss coming to Sonoma and Shige Sushi. Our sever was friendly and gave us some great suggestions for which sushi roll to order. This restaurant is small and it was packed this day and we were seated at the bar. Was craving sushi. Heard good things about this place and decided to check this out. When we entered we were greeted by the waiter, white male. He directed us to the table by door. We asked very nicely if we could sit in one of the other open tables away from the door. He started to give attitude and acted bothered. I noticed we were the only group he was rude to. Someone asked him where the restroom was and he just pointed without telling them. He was the worst part about this place. The sushi was really good. We went for lunch. I enjoyed the Tempura Bento, which comes with just the right amount of salad and rice. My daughter enjoyed the Chirashi which was really a pretty decent Poke bowl. The quality wasn't any better than any above average japanese restaurant I've been to in California, but everything was smaller portions and about $5 more than it should be. My partner said she thought the food skimped on ingredients and I would agree based on what we got. If you're in Sonoma and you need sushi and you don't mind paying inflated prices, its fine but you're definitely overpaying here. We recently moved full-time to Sonoma having lived in San Francisco for 30 years. In that time we ate at a lot of San Francisco Japanese restaurants and sushi bars, but never at a Sonoma sushi bar, and we learned from our experience in San Francisco that a key indicator of a sushi restaurant that cares about the quality of its food is the freshness of its sashimi (raw fish cut into thin slices). Is the maguro (the tuna) red and moist without smelling too fishy? Is the hamachi (yellow fin tuna) pink and also moist and not too fishy smelling? So when a friend, who also had lived in San Francisco for years, recommended a small Japanese sushi restaurant, Shige Sushi Japanese Kitchen, as "authentic", with very fresh sashimi, we decided to try Shige Sushi yesterday evening. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with red lanterns and posters of Japanese movies and events on the walls. The service was fast and friendly, and the jazz in the background was calming and light-hearted. And the sashimi was excellent! We had the hamachi, 10 slices for $18.00, served on a nice ceramic plate with wasabi mustard, and radish slivers, and a bowl of rice (extra), and the sukiyaki, a hot pot beef and noodle soup with a bowl of rice ($25.00). Can't believe this is the only Sushi place in Sonoma! Came for a very early dinner after some wine tastings, we showed up right at 5 when they opened and we were the first customers in. They have a very nice and secluded patio in the back. The staff was very friendly and the service prompt. I love gyozas, so I always order them, I was sooo relieved that they were not deep fried, I much more prefer them steamed and lightly fried, so they were delicious! For rolls, we tried the: - Crunchy roll ($8 tempura crunch on top of a California roll covered in eel sauce) - Ken Chan ($17 shrimp tempura, cucumber, and crab mix inside; Hawaiian style poke tuna, crab mix, and scallions on top) - Hot Hot ($16 Spicy Tuna, Cucumber Top: Spicy Hamachi, Chili Oil, Jalapeno). However, some children came from inside the restaurant and proceeded to loudly play in the patio area (there is some sort of game board). They were pretty much nonstop. The mother at the other table tried (unsuccessfully) to get them to calm down and respect others. Unfortunately, to no avail. Needless to say, we were extremely leery about ordering more food and enduring any more of their playground antics. The topper was that our server seemed to disappear. It breaks my heart to give out a low rating. But here's my story and my experience. We made a reservation, *highly recommended*, and it took about 20 minutes for a server to serve us after handing us a menu. Then, we waited about 45-50 minutes for the food to arrive. I noticed an elderly lady was giving more attention to non-minorities than minorities. She stopped by every table but ours. She barely gave us any attention until towards the end when we needed to pay. For the food, I recommend the Tempura Udon, it was delicious, a must order. The Chicken Karaage is crispy and more on the dry side. Hamachi Kama is okay, dry, but the salad on the side was good. We got their sashimi large, but WOW. We got some scales, tendons, and small bones. It's my first time having any of these... so watch out guys! We clearly ordered edamame, large Sapporo, shiro maguro and many other dishes. The edamame never appeared, and by the time we realized, we no longer wanted it. The Sapporo was not delivered until the waitron was prompted. Shiro maguro somehow how was transmagrified to tako (octopus) when it was delivered. Clearly a sh*t show. Waitron was quite nice and apologetic: "Oh, the nigiri chef is busy tonight." If the nigiri chef cannot cut it (pun intended) on a rainy night when the restaurant is not full, the he should be cut (pun intended). Would it be that there was a great sushi restaurant in Sonoma. My first visit to this authentic Japanese restaurant which is located next to the Lucky's grocery store. Easy to find parking in the huge parking lot. From the outside, it looks like a small restaurant and no indoor seating today, June 15th. But the backyard patio has several tables and was a delightful surprise. Chirashi bowl was so fresh, fish was top quality. I highly recommend appetizers agedashi tofu ( has a mochi like coating on the soft tofu and fried in a nice broth), edamame, hamachi carpaccio. The tempura was lightly battered and a great variety of squash, zucchini, yam, onion ring, green bean and shrimp. I will be back the next time I'm in Sonoma! read more

Honestly, wow. First and foremost, the quality of the fish was superb. Service was also great. Arrived 25 min before close after a post wine-tasting nap went long, and although they hesitatingly allowed us in the empty restaurant, they were absolutely wonderful after we walked in the door. It's a very small restaurant (didn't realize this when I opened the door) so trying to keep my distance and stay 6-feet away (because of COVID) I was in the doorway. The guy working the register asked me to close the door bc I was letting the air out (mind you it's not like it's hot outside-probably the same temperature inside as out). I waited about 10-15 minutes for a table for two. We were seated and served immediately. A hot towel is placed beside each table setting, which I thought was a nice addition to the service. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire meal, but my absolute favorites would definitely have to be the hamachi jalapeño carpaccio, gyoza, the crazy ninja roll, and the lychee sorbet to finish. I am doing the KETO diet so I was a bit nervous about visiting Shige Sushi because Japanese food has a reputation of containing lots of sugar, but throwing caution to the wind, I gave it a try and I am really glad I did. I think I was the first customer Saturday morning. I was greeted as soon as I walked in by a very friendly waiter who made me feel very welcome. I ordered the octopus [hold the teriyaki sauce] sashimi, the salmon skin salad and hot tea. There are probably other items I could order and not get kicked out of KETO and I look forward to another visit to explore them. The only very minor negative was that the tea water wasn't as hot as I would have liked, my second pot of tea had much hotter water. If you are on KETO and order the octopus you should ask for no teriyaki sauce and that the tentacles not be breaded.
