Came over for dinner one night, greeted by staff immediately which was nice. Upon on entering the restaurant, the simple yet warm and welcoming atmosphere really got me, although the lighting could have some improvement but overall good. The food we ordered was excellent especially the quality of the fish, the rolls were fun and flavorful but my favorite was still the sashimi, you can tell they use fresh fish and the cuts were generous! Sweet and caring service from beginning to end, need to come in more often before they get too popular and the wait time gets longer

Asaka Sushi & Bar is one of those neighborhood gems that keeps you coming back. I always enjoy the food and the chill, inviting vibe here, and their service is on point and friendly. This time I tried raw shrimp with the fried head and sauce on top, plus a 12-piece sashimi platter with all the classics, and everything was super fresh and delicious. What's cool is that Asaka mixes traditional sushi staples with thoughtful touches -- you'll see familiar nigiri and sashimi alongside creative rolls and house specialties that give the meal a bit more personality. The spot also has a warm, casual atmosphere that makes it easy to linger and enjoy the food without feeling rushed. If you're in Berkeley and craving quality Japanese that feels both familiar and fun, this place is an easy choice.

We went for lunch since we were in the area and we wanted Japanese food. My mom and I were warmly greeted by Mike who was provided amazing service to us and another customer since we were the only ones there. We ordered the lunch bento that came with 2 choices and agedashi tofu for our appetizer. We also got hot teas which came with complimentary refills. The food was delicious and perfectly portioned for lunch! Not too little and not too much. Each came with miso soup and salad. I got the tonkatsu + sashimi (the sashimi was so fresh!) and my mom got the tonkatsu + salmon (without teriyaki). We would come back again! I want to try their rolls next time since they have an extensive menu of specialty rolls.

I am obsessed with Asaka. I just ordered from them a few days ago and was already ready for another round. I think this is some of the best "hole in the wall" sushi spots in the East Bay. My husband's face lit up when he took his first bite of the 38. Sushi Pizza Roll. The fish is very fresh and it has a beautiful presentation. Asaka is definitely our new go to spot. We can't wait to come visit in person.

Had an early dinner with my cousin and this place wasn't busy! Our server was very friendly and let us take our time with the menu. We ordered a few rolls and an appetizer sushi to share. The sushi was delicious! You can taste the freshness of the fish. The one thing that threw me off was the raw onion on my roll. This place is a bit pricier than other places so I probably wouldn't return, but I definitely enjoyed my time and the food!

Amazing sushi spot in Berkeley! Parking was tough we had to circulate the neighborhood a few times to find a spot. But the service and ambiance were great! The sushi was super fresh and flavorful! The eel and salmon were absolutely delicious!

A friend and I did a cycling class and was looking for a place to have lunch close by. We both love sushi and decided to check out Asaka Sushi and Bar. In short--Hands down one of the best sushi meals I have had in a long time. Fresh sushi with so many options, great service and comfy and quaint seating. When I visit again, I'll happily return here for another meal.

My husband and I decided to try Asaka Sushi when we were looking for a place to eat in Berkeley with our puppy. We came across Asaka Sushi through Yelp, and we were happy to see that they would accommodate us with our puppy. Asaka is on a quaint little street with some great neighbors. We sat outside with our puppy. They were so nice to us and our puppy. I ordered the Asaka Treasure Box which was presented amazingly in a cute wooden box. It comes with 6 pieces of nigiri and your choice of a cut roll. The nigiri was fresh, and they offered some great types. It was so delicious. I chose the spicy salmon roll which was small, but I enjoyed it. My husband ordered a bento box with beef teriyaki, sashimi, and spicy salmon. Honestly, he didn't really enjoy the beef teriyaki. It was okay. Nothing special. The sashimi and spicy were good though.

Asaka Sushi is a great sushi spot! We had the Salmon Lover Roll, UCB Roll, and Hot Night Roll (not pictured). The Salmon Lover and UCB rolls were my favorite! Its location in a charming Berkeley neighborhood is also a plus!

EXCELLENT rolls, really sweet service. The fish is just so fatty and fresh. Great little bar vibe. Lots of rolls, with everything we tried being very good. The sake and toro nigiri especially! Highly recommended!

Food is amazing. I get the dragon roll here all the time - usually pickup but sometimes I eat there. It's cozy inside! I like that.

It appears to be popular with families as well. It was a Friday evening after 9pm, kind of late for us to eat very much but I needed something so we popped in. It was quiet, maybe three or four other tables. Our food server was patient as I looked over the fairly large menu. Ended up with some of my current faves: hamachi nigiri, California roll, yam roll, and salmon skin roll. Everything was thoughtful, well prepared, and delicious. It was just enough food and I was good for the night. On our second visit, my hubby and I brought my dad for lunch to celebrate his 88th birthday. It was pouring rain outside but we were fortunate to get parking right outside the door. We ended up sitting by the window which was the same table we sat at during our first visit. We ordered gyoza (6) for the table. We all ordered bento. Dad had the beef short ribs and California roll, hubby had the Vegetable tempura and California roll, I had the Saba shiyoyaki and hamachi sashimi. All three came with miso soup and salad. Everything was delicious. My fish was well seasoned and moist, dad's beef short ribs were tender, hubby's tempura was light and crisp. Lunch was very reasonably priced for all we ordered. I am definitely a fan of this place and look forward to dining here again.

I see a lot of people ordering maybe 3-4 handrolls and sharing appetizers but I mainly focus on the handrolls. These handrolls are on average 2-3 bites for me, 2 would be a big bite. There is no discount if you order from a set so order the sets only if you truly want every item in the list. If you come for lunch, take a look at their lunch sets because it comes out to only a couple dollars more and you get cucumber and edamame as an appetizer which is enough to share amongst two people. I love that they make the sushi rice vinegary here. I enjoy most of the items that I normally would like, there isn't a bad one except sometimes the black garlic aioli on the seared albacore tastes a bit fatty to me. Otherwise everything I order from my pictures are always fresh and good. One thing I noticed for the snow crab and chives is that they do not use mayo here compared to their Oakland location. I loved the ocean trout I had in early May and sad to see it gone by the end of May, it was sweet and fresh. Hope it comes back soon, @manager, let me know! lol thanks P.S. I do have a suggestion about the timing that food comes out, one time I was there for lunch and our table specifically had large gaps between the rolls coming out. I'm talking about 15 minutes before the next set comes out while other tables get multiple things in the meantime. After 45 min, I finally said something and the staff was able to get everything else out in 5 min so the kitchen was not backed up, she said it was some kind of timer the chef sets and maybe something was wrong there. I had brought a friend so I felt really bad for him to have a bad experience with the wait time but other than that the food was great.

Review for dinner service on 6 March 25…read more I had been trying off and on to get a booking but nothing was ever available, so I was pleasantly surprised to snag a seating for two within a week of the reservation because a fellow Yelper cancelled her reservation (thank you Sarah T!) The following week, we were in for a wonderful, delicious and entertaining evening. The two other couples had made their reservations back in December, so I felt very lucky we did not have as long a wait. Chef Aki-san and Michiko-san are a husband and wife team. At 6pm, the door opened and Michiko-san invited the six of us to choose a seat at the sushi bar. We all sat down before a simple place setting: a square ceramic plate, hashioki (chopstick rests), hashi (chopsticks, paper napkin and oshibori (towel for wiping your fingers). She handed us a menu and checked in with everyone to see if there were any dietary restrictions or allergies, took our drink orders and a brought a small bowl of edamame for each couple. We declined ordering any side dishes because I suspected that the 16-item omakase selection would be more than enough for the evening. As it turned out, two salads were added to our already extensive menu. Nommmm ... more tastes for me :D As we drank and munched on edamame, we watched Aki-san stocking the bar with ingredients he would be serving to us. He introduced himself and in turn we introduced ourselves - where we were from, how we learned of the restaurant, etc. It turned out to be the first time for all of us. During the course of the evening, we learned quite a bit about his history and experience working as a sushi chef before opening his own restaurant. Our menu (in order) for the evening: -Tako and Sunomono salad with shiso leaf, drizzled with a light miso sauce -Blue fin toro -Ika/squid -Hokkaido scallop -Ebi/fresh water shrimp -Sake/salmon -Saba/mackerel -Ankimono (Monkfish liver) and Sunomono salad with scallions and tobiko, shiso leaf with a ponzo sauce -Ikura, avocado and tobiko -A5 wagyu -Seared albacore -Hokkaido uni -Buri/ hamachi yellowtail -Blue fin toro -Sake/salmon cold smoked with hickory -Anago (fresh water eel) -Unagi (salt water eel) -Tamagoyaki Everything was incredibly fresh and tasted of the sea. Each piece was carefully prepared, perfectly seasoned, beautiful on the plate. He talked about each item as we tasted and ate. I loved watching as he rubbed the wasabi root against a metal shark skin grater, a tool he has had forever. Chef Aki-san chided me when I confessed I was eating the nigiri in two bites - apparently that is the wrong way to eat! Nigiri is meant to be eaten in one bite, the logic being that you don't get the full experience of the taste and flavour in two bites. My issue is that most nigiri sushi these days have too much rice that my mouth is too full to appreciate the flavour. However, he prepares "low carb" portions so the fish and beef are highlighted, yet all in balance. To sum things up - the food and presentation was perfect. I am not a fan of eel, so those were my least favourite bites. It was my first time eating monkfish liver. I found it quite delicious and would definitely eat it again. Mitchiko-san was very sweet and attentive, noting if we needed refills of water or sake jars. The atmosphere overall was light, friendly and jovial, and we enjoyed the company of who we were dining with. Not to mention that Aki-san is quite entertaining in his own right. Note: There is only one service per evening so you will not feel rushed to eat and dash. We did not get out of there until 9:30pm. He also mentioned that starting in June they will be cutting back to two days a week - Friday and Saturday only - something to keep in mind. Will try our luck getting reservations again in about 7 months to celebrate our birthdays and anniversary.
