Not to be a contrarian but I was pleasantly surprised by Asakuma. I've been tempted by their 2 for 1 spicy tuna crispy rice deal on Uber Eats and I went in blind. It only took 20 minutes for the food to arrive. My main complaint is that the food was relatively bland. I gave both the miso soup and crispy rice a heavy pour of MSG and sambal sauce respectively. I'm giving Asakuma four stars despite its limitations because it was reasonably priced and the portions were satisfying. Dropped into Asakuma on Robertson last night, a tiny hole in the wall sushi restaurant with little character and a few tables, mostly to go and delivery here. At the cashier's recommendation, I try the "Bora Bora Roll" off the "Chef's Specialty Rolls" section of a rather large and daunting menu. It's sweet shrimp wrapped in eel with avocado and such. For $16 it was tasty enough and well assembled, the eel was a little drier than I like, but it did the trick in a pinch after a movie. Something nice happened when I mentioned I was still hungry... As it was the young man behind the counter's last night working there, he treats me to a spicy tuna atop fried rice with jalapeño slivers on top. They are very good and I liked how the crispy rice is shaped like a small round muffin, cooked to be quite crispy and golden brown. The act alone is getting me to bump up the 3/5 star rating a point to being 4/5 stars. If you're looking for a solid pick-up place for sushi and you happen to live close by, this place is pretty good! read more

DO NOT order delivery from them. This has happened to me twice already that Uber driver supposedly picked up the order and never delivered it. The food quality has gone done significantly over the years and change of ownership. Very inconsistent. Recently did a carry out and ended up with HARD dried up sushi. What a waste of money and completely dangerous to be serving sushi that is nowhere close to being fresh. Disputed the transaction (only the parts of the order that were not edible) with the restaurant, delivery service AND the credit card company, and the restaurant somehow the restaurant came out on top. I couldn't get past how warm everything was. My order was the salmon combo sashimi, nigiri, and roll. They throw an icepack the size of a lighter on top of the contrainers to help with temperature but what would actually help is an ice pack that is flat and goes on the bottom (where the food is) The salmon had a film or...SOMEthing coating it. The wasabi was not real wasabi; couldn't be. Even after I explained my frustration and how this had taken three hours of my night and I still had no food, they wouldn't even make me a new order or do any make good to help fix the issue. I'm usually not a big fan about taking sushi to go but this place is too good to keep a secret. A very small store front you can easily miss when driving down Robertson across the street from a school and between a nail shop and copy store. I placed a phone order and was told 10 minutes my order would be ready. The owner is very careful about handling everything. Paid got in my car and hurried back to work. I appreciate the one large glass wall where the entrance is, because if it was a solid wall I would have felt very cramped and claustrophobic.
