Yeeeeears ago - 1992 to be exact - my dad bought my mother a beautiful gold and diamond tennis bracelet. I remember this clearly from when I was a little kid. It was so blingy and likely very expensive that she yelled at him for buying it. I, still in elementary school, saw that she was dissatisfied with the purchase and offered to take it off her hands. Surprisingly, she refused my offer. Well, earlier this year, exactly three decades later, she finally gave me the damn thing, along with appraisal paperwork from 1992 saying that it was worth $10,000 even then, before 30 years of inflation. But don't get excited and start planning to rob me quite yet, Internet. She also told me that the guy who sold it to my dad was later federally investigated for selling fake diamonds, so there was a chance it wasn't even real. I needed an appraisal. I looked around, and saw that Ascot Diamonds was highly reputable, so I reached out about an appraisal via e-mail. Paul e-mailed me back very promptly and offered to appraise it for free. I came in at the agreed time expecting it to be a regular storefront but it was more like a serious business office, immediately making me regret my scuzzy short shorts that I had thrown on for running errands. Paul was kind and welcoming and pleasant and sat me down at his desk while he examined the diamonds, weighed the bracelet, and then did a bunch of math on a calculator. He was able to confirm that they were real but that, while the bracelet was definitely worth something, the original appraisal was VERY overstated (so, big surprise, Internet, my bracelet is not worth $10,000, please don't rob me). In addition to giving me this candid but helpful information, Paul offered to recommend places where I could sell it, though I declined, as it is still quite pretty and, after waiting 30 years for it, I'm not ready to give it up. I did, however, point out what I thought was a damage, and asked if he had ideas on where to get it repaired. He looked at it and determined it was just dirt so then he cleaned it for me - again, no charge - and the whole thing is SO sparkly and shiny now. The entire interaction took maybe 10 minutes at the outside? It was so easy and pleasant and helpful, and he really didn't have to do this for me since I am not a paying customer but he did. Honestly, I was initially fairly disappointed that they didn't have any sample rings to try on. That's probably failure on my part for not doing thorough research on the ring shop. Everything is custom made so they only have the diamonds and a few sample holders that you can hold the diamond in with tweezers and hover in the sample ring band. We are in the initial phases of ring shopping so we haven't gotten too far in the process with Ascot. What I will say is I was also initially disappointed with the customer service. The man helping us didn't seem super friendly. He seems passionate about talking about his ring knowledge but not about MY experience if that makes sense. I was probably being a bit cranky that the ring shop wasn't what I expected. So maybe he was giving me the same energy in return. They had tons of diamond choices, but if you're looking for larger carat sizes you might not find it here. He only brought out the carat sizes in 2-3 carat range. I believe they can order what you want, but they didn't have anything in store to try on. When I asked to see a bigger carat for the emerald he said that's all they had (size 3 carat). There weren't a ton of band selections in office to try on either. They have lab and natural diamonds. I didn't see the process but my boyfriend said the prices were reasonable. Just remember they price everything out individually since you're customizing the ring. Also, the ambiance of the ring shop wasn't the best. It just looked like an office which made the experience not feel as special like "wow! I'm in a ring shop and we are really doing this." All of that is part of the experience when shopping. You need to book an appointment in advance. There's street parking, but you have to pay for the street or garage parking. There's no parking validation available. Overall, we might give them another chance once I have a better idea of what it is I want. If you're not sure what you want this might not be the place for you since everything is based on you customizing it. I really want to like this place but I wish they made the experience a bit nicer on their customers. They offer 3D print option of the ring which takes some time but that's the best they can do for us visual folks. read more

It is a 35 minute drive from where we live but we were looking forward to visiting a jeweler that had so many 5 star ratings. Most listed only have a four or less. We were unfortunately very disappointed with what was a very brief meeting with a young woman who came out of the work area to address us. Rather than introducing herself and saying welcome she got right to the point. She was polite but not really helpful. TL;DR: Ladies - make sure your boyfriend comes here to find you an engagement ring!!! Seriously. My now-fiancé and I had an incredibly positive experience at Ascot Diamonds. It was important to me that we go together to look at rings and my fiancé, while hesitant at first, says he is so glad we did and so glad we went with Ascot. We worked with Paul Jacobs - he was amazing! He took the time to explain *a lot* of the process, the 4Cs, what goes into the cost of a ring, where you might be able to cut some corners to stay under a certain number budget-wise and where you definitely should not compromise to make sure you have a quality ring. We were both very impressed with Paul's knowledge. It can certainly be overwhelming to shop for an engagement ring and Paul was very kind, straightforward and able to explain everything so we understood it, and he answered all of our various questions. We appreciated the one-on-one experience - it was personalized and anything but pretentious. (It was also *by far* the best experience we had in the northern Virginia area. We visited a few other local jewelers the same day so we could easily compare and decide which we would like to move forward with, and Ascot blew the others out of the water.) We are over the moon that we chose Ascot. Madison was an absolute GEM. My now fiancé was stressed about making a choice (and huge investment) on his own, but Madison quelled his fears and walked us through every step of the process with grace, thoughtfulness and humor. During our very first appointment at any jeweler as a couple, Madison spent over two hours with us walking us through the appropriate vocabulary, choices, price points, and considerations. She never once tried to upsell us and in fact, talked us down from some pricier choices when they didn't align with what we envisioned for the ring. Madison showed us some loose diamonds that she had on hand and when I couldn't give her more of an opinion than "I like the way this one sparkles," she knew exactly where to go from there. Madison helped me choose three bands I liked and took notes on what I liked about each diamond (I don't know how, given that I had absolutely no idea what I was talking about), and she and my fiance took it from there. My fiancé and I found Ascot through Yelp and I'm so glad we trusted the internet! After emailing them, we were set up with Paul with worked with us through the whole process. I had already been to a few jeweler's with my mom prior to meeting Paul with my fiancé , so I was well versed in the 4C's. But he was very patient & professional and walked through our options. He gave us his honest opinions when it came to getting the most bang for out buck. At no time did I ever feel like we were getting pressured to purchase right away. I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted design-wise, but was still on the fence about a few things. Paul suggested to put "shoulders" on the setting which is not only a safeguard but looks great, and swayed me to go with a cushion cut halo instead of a round halo which would look a little trend / less timeless. He gave us the pros and cons of white gold vs platinum and we decided to go with white gold which is less expensive and doesn't take on a patina. I was glad to have his expert opinions. We ended up making a custom ring, combining elements from several settings created by Ascot's "in-house" designer collection (Catherine Ryder). Paul worked with my fiancé on the final design (sending him CAD designs for review) so it was a surprise when I saw it. I couldn't be more thrilled! My ring constantly gets complimented by strangers and it's soooo sparkly. When my fiancé met separately with Paul to actually purchase the diamond, they spent a lot of time working out different pricing options with a variety of diamonds until they were able to find a gorgeous, brilliant cut 1 carat diamond within his budget. I had been told at other stores that 1 carat would not be possible with our budget, but Ascot made it happen. We're going to pick out wedding rings here very soon, I can't imagine going anywhere else. **As a note- you need to make an appointment to come here. We were pleased with the rings, but the customer service by one of the representatives was not what I'd expect from a 5 star establishment. It took about an additional month and a half from when we were first told the rings would be completed to get them in our hands. I had to reach out to him multiple times to even get a follow up on when the new expected completion date would be. Then the engravings that were being discussed were done without confirmation even after he checked and ensured me they weren't completed. After finally getting the rings we needed to make a change. Because we didn't have much time before the wedding, he had to rush the delivery. He billed the rush fee to us and told us that because he had to rush it we needed to pay. I tried to explain to him that it was his lack of follow up that put us in this situation and putting that charge on us wasn't acceptable. I asked to speak to someone else within the company and he said he would just send a personal check.... which never came. I don't even care about the rush fee, but the fact that he would try to put that on us after we had to follow up with him multiple times is extremely frustrating. His lack of professionalism with his anger toward us as if we caused this situation and his offering of a personal check is also disappointing. My Fiancee and I worked with Paul directly in choosing the perfect engagement ring. I can't say enough about my ring buying experience with Paul and the team at Ascot. They went above and beyond to make the process as painless as possible. It's been years since I've written a review on Yelp, but this ring deserved a post and overwhelmed, exhausted, confused fiancés deserve to know about Ascot. Let me just say, there are jewelers and then there is Paul. My fiancé Jeff and I didn't know the first thing about "the Cs," diamond prices, or custom designs. I had an idea that I wanted something different - oval and rose gold are hard to find - and we couldn't seem to locate a store that offered what I was looking for or for a price that wasn't completely out of our budget. Then I read the Yelp reviews about Ascot. We stopped in Ascot on a Saturday and Paul made time to see us. Though the initial meeting was a bit hurried (he fit us in and we knew we had a limited time), we learned everything we needed to know about engagement rings and, better yet, all the things that didn't really matter. We both instantly felt at ease and I was in love with nearly every design Paul showed us. It was such a relief to find someone who wasn't the least bit pushy and created beautiful ring after beautiful ring. Jeff and I left saying "this is the guy!" Our instinct was solidified after visiting a few other jewelers and receiving poor customer service, no customization, and a slew of bad designs. From there, Jeff and Paul worked together in order to keep the element of surprise alive. And surprised I was! A few months later Jeff proposed while I was on a business trip and I nearly had a heart attack from the shock of him being there and him giving me such a stunning ring. It was everything I had ever wanted and had so many more details that I couldn't have dreamed of. I put it on the minute I wake up in the morning and still get excited looking at it. My fiance and I worked with Tim Birch to get the engagement ring redesign. We kept the original diamond and band and added two more stones on the side. Tim was helping us with finding the right diamonds that were in our price range and giving suggesting on redesigning the wedding band. The ring new style came out beautifully and the appraisal of the ring is worth about a thousand more than what we paid for the new stones, original stone and the band combined because it is so unique and beautiful! Tim Birch was incredibly accommodating, knowledgable, and very helpful throughout the entire process. He took his time to hold my hands and walked me through the entire process. My fiancé and I used Ascot diamonds to custom design a ring to fit my grandmother's diamond. Madison and the entire team at Ascot were fantastic. We both went in to look at rings and to discuss ideas because I had found a design I loved and wanted to find a way to recreate it and incorporate my heirloom stone. Madison answered all of our questions and gave us items to think about. After discussing our options, we both decided Ascot was who we wanted to work with to create our perfect engagement ring. I went by on my own to drop off my family stone and Madison worked with me to be able to drop it off quickly and easily. The CAD she sent over incorporated the original design and the changes we discussed and it was perfect. She was responsive to our emails and made me feel at ease. My partner found them easy to work with on payment and picking up the finished ring was also a breeze. I chose not to look at the finished product because I wanted to be surprised. When my fiancé proposed with the ring I was blown away by how beautiful it was. It was better than I could have imagined. I love the ring and I loved our experience with Ascot Diamonds. I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically would recommend Paul for your engagement ring. An amazing and easy experience. My girlfriend of the time and I found ourselves in a never-ending drama of weekend ring shopping trips, lots of back and forth with high-pressure sales reps . . . and then Paul rescued us, finally and quickly landing us in a great place. He was far and away the easiest and most trustworthy to work with. You'll be in good and safe hands with him. Backing up, after lots of shopping, my fiancé finally found the stone she liked. A few days later, a second visit to see it, and she had to have it. The problem was that the retailer could see the palpable excitement and, perhaps for that reason (or perhaps not), we found ourselves quoted a significant price for the setting. We explored buying just the stone, but then the retailer equivocated on standing behind the value on the stone (i.e., no return even if appraised under value). And when that wouldn't work, we decided to try to find another retailer to obtain the stone and set it. That backfired. Another retailer with whom we had visited put a hold on it, and effectively it ceased to exist. Paul was on the case. He assured my girlfriend he could find the stone. He got her instructions on a custom setting and quoted a price way below what the other retailer asked. And, after a few days, he helped us get the hold release and had the stone in hand. My girlfriend was thrilled. But the real miracle was in how quickly he turned it around. Our families were coming in the weekend after the next, and so she knew I would be popping the question just the day before when the ring arrived. Somehow Paul managed to get the ring ready a week and a half ahead of the original plan, which meant I was able to surprise my un-expecting girlfriend with the proposal the weekend before. Worked out so beautifully. And to top it off, Paul ended up quoting a price for the stone well below the original retailer's pricing--in sum, saving us several thousand dollars below the original all-in pricing. The ring, and the element of surprise around the proposal, are probably the most important memories to my now fiancé. I of course really appreciate the savings and the ease of the experience. But perhaps the best thing about Paul is the total absence of pressure, upselling or stress in working with him. The whole experience was super relaxed.
