I went back again.... this time because I needed to grab a few quicks items for a random few dinners just before Thanksgiving. Do you ever find yourself wanting high end foods to cook at home but not too much ... so you don't have to throw anything away??? I DO Any who- I enjoyed the staff here- they were super friendly and knowledgeable. I grabbed a few prepared foods at the deli section. I enjoyed the variety of things, and the balsamic glazed grilled chicken and tri color carrot medley. There snack section is a tad drabbbb.... or so my nine year old said.. she missed the unnecessary sweeteners and annoying frosting.... and for that ... Thank you - she got a cheese snack. Visited the store in March 2025 and there was a sign on the door "closed for renovations". 5 months later, it's still closed. According to MAPS, they are "temporarily closed". Their (outdated-looking) website doesn't state that they are closed at all. The main phone number rings and rings; no outgoing message to say they are closed. Makes me wonder if they will ever re-open. When I did shop there, the prices were a little higher than a big grocery stores, which wasn't great but I was okay with to support a smaller biz and for the convenience. But the baskets were always filthy and there were some fresh, frozen and dry/shelved expired items around the store. It did seem like they were struggling to maintain the store. I do hope some improvements will be made and that it can reopen. read more

Insanely expensive. I don't know how they stay in business! I go here for emergencies and the artesian bread, which is the only item priced the same as other supermarket a mile down the road. The eggs are about $3 more than other supermarkets. A large box of Cheerios $11.59 (not sure I got the cents correct) really are they insane. Same box I can purchase for $5 and some change at the other supermarket. Not even Whole Foods is this expensive. I'll stay with an empty fridge until I can go elsewhere. read more

Love Ashley's Marketplace. Yes, this place is pricey but the selection of vegetables is fantastic and the staff are friendly and helpful. The meat and fish departments are wonderful and you can find a vast collection of cheese and speciality products (coffee, teas, coffee, noodles, legumes, imported sauces and spices). And the smaller atmosphere feel more family-friendly compared to Whole Foods. The fresh food counter is also amazing. The sushi is made fresh in the morning (I watched the chefs make my roll) and I enjoyed a delicious lunch. Highly recommend!! read more

Ashley has updated or shall we just say changed things around in the store. They have removed one of the hot bar stations which was consistently a life saver when dealing with an elderly family member with picky tastes. This Thanksgiving meal was a huge disappointment. The hot bar turkey looked as if they had taken a deli turkey (one that was used for slicing sandwich slices) added gravy to it and put it on the hot bar. There were also limited options for vegetables. The dressing options were cornbread or cranberry with rice regular type stuffing. My mother in law is a good vegetable eater so I did pick up a few of the steamed root medley. When we finally had our Thanksgiving lunch myself and G sat and had a lovely lunch with an adorable 90 year old lady who made not one complaint about the food. She even enjoyed the small slice of apple crumb pie ($5.99) which was probably the least expensive thing in Ashley market. On our way home both me and G expressed our disappointment with the food quality. My mother in law totally enjoyed the food and thats what mattered the most. I am not sure we will ever again use Ashley for a hot bar meal. Total lack of any flavor. Someone definitely forgot the seasonings for today's smorgasbord. read more

Incredibly convenient but that's where the positives end. I can't tell you how many times I've relented, tried to pick up a few essentials in a pinch and was left with moldy, expired and disappointing products. Selection is lousy. This isn't my preferred supermarket, so when I shop here its usually to get a deli made sandwich which this review primarily focuses on. They're very good and easily beat out 'Subway' in both amount of choices and taste. The sandwiches are delicious here and the don't cheat you on the meat. You can get all types of bread you'd normally get a sandwich on. I had the 'caddy shack' - maple ham, lettuce, tomato, canadian cheddar cheese, with deli mustard. Fresh, flavorful and a decent size. The counter staff are always helpful as is the rest of staff here it seems. The store is usually clean, the layout is decent and their stock is pretty good. Its the high prices are what scares me away normally. This store is like a convenient Whole foods as far as prices, but with an awesome deli counter. If you want shop here go for it, I recommend the sandwiches and hot bar though. Shop elsewhere for your standard grocery needs unless you get paid like a pro athlete. read more

Just like everyone else, we mostly come here for the buffet and the reduced pricing for the food after 7pm. You can find a large range of food options there for all types of taste. I can never control myself as I continue to find something more to add to my box and when I get to the register I'm grinning because I know my box weighs a ton but I will be enjoying every bite of it. Located in downtown from Seton Hall and easy access to many stores and the night life that is in the area it is a nice to stop to grab a bite before traveling to NY or catching a movie. read more

This place used to be good like 10 years ago but sadly it has really gone downhill over the past few years. Produce is so-so, anything perishable like deli, meat and fish looks meh at best, and everything is way overpriced. The other day I bought a can of Progresso minestrone soup there for $6.49. I know we are living in inflationary times and that soup's not $3 anymore, especially at a small store like this, but $6.49 is highway robbery for friggin Progresso. I checked a comparable small, local grocery store in Maplewood, one town over, and they had the same soup for $4.59. read more

First, it's overpriced, NYC prices but in South Orange, doesn't make any sense, plus, you really should take a look at the expiration date, sometimes you can buy stuff that you won't be able to eat, be really careful about that. DO NOT BUY MILK, even if the expiration date is good, the milk starts to stink before the due date. Unfortunately, this is the only store like that in South Orange, it's why they don't give a f**** about what they're doing, please, for everyone's sake, DON'T GO THERE, I know it looks good but it's not, AND most of the staff (I said most of it) don't know about happiness, smile and good stuff like that !!!! A former Garden of Eden Family Store known as Eden Marketplace, this gourmet grocery has since changed owners and is now called Ashley Marketplace. For the most part, nothing has changed. It continues to source high quality produce and foods. Service has even improved with a few tweaks, like moving customer service to the back of the store closer to the registers. While you could probably find cheaper prices at the Pathmark on Valley or Shoprite in West Orange, the convenience of being by the train station and the stock of specialty items not found nearby sets this grocery apart. When you enter from the SO Avenue entrance, you turn left and head into the store through automatic sliding doors (Above Restaurant is up the stairs). Once through the doors, you'll walk past two quick registers and an eating area. Then you'll see the gelato case and cake/sweets case to your left, ready-made sandwiches and other pre-made meals to your right, and the hot bar section will be in front of you. Past the hot bar area are breads and bakery items. The store runs deep from SO Avenue, so you turn right to get to the other sections - cheese cases, seafood, butcher, freezer cases, food aisles. etc. The produce section is all the way in the back by the registers and customer service desk. The layout can be a bit overwhelming your first time there, but if you get lost, look down (there are arrows and directions on the floor). Also, customers can park in the deck under the Avenue building on Vose Avenue. It's very convenient. For the most part, I come here for fruits and vegetables, specialty items (gluten free cookies, etc.), and the hot bar (discounted after 7:30pm). I bought a cake there once for a party and everyone loved it. I haven't tried the gelato yet, but it's on my to-do! If you are in the area, check it out especially if you are a foodie. Ashley's is best for produce; great prices and always good quality. They also have a big frozen food section. The Ice cream section is also pretty great. As for prepared foods - the best thing is the packaged salads. I dont think their cooked food buffet looks good. I also once bought stuffed manicotti, and it was bad. read more

Great little market right in the heart of South Orange. Has tons of selection of specialty foods and drinks. Almost like a mini Whole Foods. I also enjoy that they have a large hot and cold bar where everything is $8 a pound and after 7:30 everything is half price. Friendly attentive staff that will guide you if you are looking for any specialty items. Definitely worth checking out and I find it better than the regular grocery stores in the neighborhood like ShopRite. read more

I have been there many times. I would consider it it a high end super market. It seems to have just about everything you would ever want/need. They have a good hot food bar, a ok salad bar and a good deli section/bar. The only reason why I downgraded the salad bar it because they dont seem to have a lot of choices. Not what it used to be. The butcher and fish counter are still great and the produce is lovely. But the bakery, deli and cheese counter are definitely not what they used to be. They have staples but less of the delightful specialties that used to bring me to the store regularly like jambon de paris and perfectly ripe domestic and french bries. The staff are not as knowledgeable nor seem as friendly, but I realize it is difficult times. Still a step above the usual grocery store though. read more

Legitimately the best sandwiches in town. Donuts are also really good, as is the tiramisu. Prices aren't too bad for what you get either.

I worked here before and they treated me HORRIBLY. Whether the checks over 2 days late, or I'm missing over 36 hours on my check . Then let's not forget that I have to wear a jacket all year around working in this store because they don't want the produce to suffer but they rather have their employees suffer from the cold. Then let's not forget at the fact that the people coming to eat at the hot bar literally eat left overs every single day. They cooK the food fresh maybe once a week. MAYBE. This isn't a good store and the managers are always full of ****. There's never been a day where someone didn't return rotten meat or food with fungus in it.Hopefully they'll get better management or something because the management they have right now isn't good at all. read more

This place has good sushi and is convenient to my home. Unfortunately, it is also overpriced and does not carry other fresh pre-made food and salads. The international aisle is also very limited, especially with Jewish foods during Passover (i.e they only had Matzah and not horseradish). Staff are often times ignore you when you ask for help finding things, so you better keep your eyes peeled. They still charge you extra for bags during this pandemic. I have been shopping here purely out of convenience for several years. When you walk into this store, you never know what you are going to get. The produce department is hit or miss. It is completely disorganized. The fresh herbs are not all kept together, the berries need to be carefully inspected as often times they are moldy and I have bought rotten parsnips here (I no longer purchase my produce here) and the selection is just sub-par. Also, if you buy something from this department, the return policy is only for same day returns. If I buy berries in the afternoon and they are moldy by the following morning, how is that my fault? They don't stand behind their product. The prepared foods you also need to be careful with. I have bought bad tomato sauce, moldy lasagna, spanish olives that tasted like they had been left out for way too long and the deli is truly a disappointment. So, no I no longer will buy anything from this department either. The food at the hot bar is just bad! Bland, boring under seasoned food is just not for me. Often times there is a dry crust on items on the hot bar and it is just gross. So, no more hot bar purchases here. Lastly, i will address the grocery department.Another disappointment! The random floor plan is extremely irritating. There is zero consistency not only in the layout of this store, but also the products they carry. Again, you never know what you will be able to get and what you can't. Today I was looking for Major Grey's chutney. I have always bought this item here and now they only have 2 chutney choices in the entire store (both apple chutney). Same with many other items. They disappear for months and then they come back again. When I asked an employee for help, he was more than happy to help me but once I started to voice my complaint, he told me to go find a manager. The management in this store is truly lacking. Poor training of staff, unhappy employees who freeze in the winter and sweat in the summer, no accountability for anything. Any other store will honor a return except for this place. I am honestly wondering why I even go in there anymore..... Stop and Shop and Whole Foods are not so far away that it isn't worth the extra 3-5 minute drive. Not sure what happened to this place in the last six months but it sure has gone. For the 2nd time in a month I naught prepared food. The first was a container of chicken matzah ball soup which when got home and opened the container it had a horrible smell and obviously had turned bad. I called to advise them what happens and maybe pull the soup and I was given an attitude about saying the check expiration dates. I explained it wasn't expired but it had turned. Nothing...not even an offer of a refund. Last night we picked up spaghetti and meatballs and surprisingly when we opened the container, once again we were met with a strange Oder and the food had turned bad. We called again today. The manager did not even take my call and was hung up on. I called back later and got another person in charge and they didn't even care. No apology no offer of a refund, no pause for concern. Will never go in there again.. Don't waste your money on bad food I've never been into a store where all the employees even look like they're miserable and don't want to be there. read more

This place was OK. The layout is very convoluted and confusing. Couldn't find anyone on the floor to help me find something. It's the kind of place I'd go to pick a thing or two up if I needed specialty items. They carry regular grocery products but I can't imagine they are cheap there. The fish counter guy was cool, and the Freeman's fish dept there had a fish I wanted that the main Freemans in Maplewood didn't, so...OK. Parking is a bitch. read more

Great place to buy fresh food daily. There is so much to choose from! The intention of this gourmet marketplace is to give an old-world specialty ambiance for those foodies out there looking to purchase top quality produce, meats, fish, baked goods, and many other ingredients in one place. This marketplace incorporates specialty bakers and butchers, and trust me, they're products worth stopping in for. Luckily, all of these products are located in downtown South Orange at Ashley's Marketplace where it is convenient for locals and those passing through town. I also love how they have sections like a gourmet coffee area with fresh ground coffee from places all around the world. The scent alone is so inviting and like many of their items in the store, you probably can't find it elsewhere. As I stopped in today, I ran over to the lunch area where they display hot meals made on a daily basis to choose from. Their rotisserie chicken is amazing so I picked one up and picked up a large container to fill up with a couple of different veggies. Today, they had Avocado salad, Tomato and red onion salad, and steamed broccoli; among many other choices, but that is what I purchased. I passed through the bakery area where they have a smoothie section, coffee section and their amazing looking desserts. I was enticed but I said no, not a cheat day but next time for sure. So worth it! So overall, great place to go shopping for home or picking up lunch. Either way, you're buying great products. I just hope they open another Ashley's closer to home! read more

The cheese selection is actually smaller than I remembered, but I did purchase some Danish havarti (with dill--delicious) and a wedge of French brie, which were fantastic when stuffed in burgers. Rather, this update is more of a complaint about the customer service from one particular employee that still ticks me off two days later. I was here this past Friday (11/13) with family to shop for a few things. For the most part, the employees at Ashley Marketplace are really nice. The two girls working at the bakery were friendly while my family was buying some creme brulee, as was the gentleman who kindly returned our shopping basket for us. However, the cashier who rang up our total is an exception. She looked pissed off even while we were waiting in line, but we didn't say anything. While we were checking out, the cashier spoke in a very rude tone while ordering my family to "put out your groceries." What's with the attitude? I have no clue what her name is, but all I remember was that she was working the cashier at 4:45pm on Friday. She might have been in trouble earlier for whatever reason, or she might be a new employee. Regardless, she needs some major customer service training if she is going to continue working here. I'm sure other customers would have instantly reacted if this happened to them, but we decided to just pay and leave. read more

I told someone once, "I go there for the affordable onions." And I cook with a lot of onions. Ashley is a gourmet grocery, but the produce section is actually quite good, convenient, and inexpensive for a store of this size. I make a point to stop here specifically for that, even though I do larger shopping trips elsewhere. It is fresher than buying in bulk a week in advance. Much better to get that bunch of cilantro the day you need it. Ashley is not my primary grocery, and I am probably not the target customer, but I enjoy shopping there for the fresh stuff as well as the bakery, the cheese (which is really good if you like cheese), and occasionally the hot and cold bar in a pinch. If you are already buying boxes of big-brand cereal here, you probably can afford it; if you can't, try Target, it's the same stuff and probably half the price. But it won't be as much fun. read more

Gets worse every year! You have to go twice once to buy and once to return items. Never bought a coconut that wasn't rotting, never bought a bag of oranges where one or two were crushed or moldy, never bought sliced prepared meat, ham that wasn't fatty and stringy, the chicken breasts packaged in watery slime, and choice beef sold as "prime choice". Out of date items, mealy fruit make this a second rate food market. Final straw was the 1/2 pound of sliced roast ham that 50% fat,20% Gristle, and 30% undercooked ham crammed in a container. Disgusting! Employees have no interest in serving customers top quality products. Yesterday was the last I'll see of this merchant in serious decline. read more
