Your average ice cream shop that maybe has high ratings because there aren't very many in the area?? Not sure, but I was satisfied with our sundae--no complaints!! The staff was pretty friendly and let us try some different flavors, but I kinda felt like they were more into entertaining themselves than the customers :/ Not to say they weren't attentive though, just not OPENLY helpful . We ended up getting a large sundae to share for the 3 of us, which comes with 3 scoops of ice cream and 3 toppings. I liked the mint ice cream the best! We also got butter pecan and an oreo one I think? They put it in a large cup though so the flavors can get a little mixed up and crowded. I love Ashley's and have for many years, I'd give it 5 stars if they fixed their sugar free ice cream. It is sweetened with aspartame which is a known laxative and guess what? It made me super sick for almost 2 days because I ate about 2 cups. So yeah I'd avoid that and eat the regular ice cream cause I've never had a bad experience with it but the sugar free? The place has a cute, old-timey ice cream parlor feel to it, but the ice cream itself is really nothing to write home about. Ashley's boasts a variety of toppings, but really lacks in ice cream flavors... it's really just standard stuff. And none of it is incredible. (I will say I've heard great things about the apple crumble flavor, but I've never personally tried it). A dozen or so of my friends and I came in to share the famous frisbee and we were not impressed. I get that it's supposed to be indulgent but they really just threw the entire topping bar on top (gummy bears with oreos and coffee ice cream?? no thanks!) I should preface my review by making it clear that I absolutely love ice cream. I came to Ashley's after coffee at Book Trader one evening. On first impression, I found the setting to be casual and comfortable. I ordered a single scoop of their Honeycomb Crunch. The ice cream was fabulous - the base was very creamy and the flavour was well-balanced (but quite sweet). I particularly like ice cream with a bite/texture, so the crunch component was quite nice. Just went to Ashley's. Bought ice cream with whipped cream. But the whipped cream was so tiny I asked for more. A young dude who wasn't even helping me said that it was the standard size while the girl who was serving me added some extra. When it came time to pay he charged me twice for the whipped cream! I said why? He told me that I asked for it! Then to my utter shock he said that if I don't want it he can take some off!!!! After a semi-hot walking tour of the Yale campus and an earlier light lunch, we decided we'd hit an ice cream place before heading out of New Haven. Ashley's was convenient, so we stopped in. The place was semi-crowded (lots of students on a hot day, as you might expect) but the line moved quickly. I think I got the chocolate Oreo; my wife may have gotten the coffee ice cream. They have a good selection of flavors here and of the 3 that I got to try they were all rich and creamy while not being too sweet. Prices are reasonable and not having the biggest sweet tooth a child (1scoop) was more than enough for me. I feel like Ashley's is kinda a New Haven staple (alongside Arethusa, obviously). I think... (though I need to do more thinking/sampling), but I think I prefer Arethusa overall, but I can say for sure that for simpler flavors like a basic sweet cream or chocolate I'd pick Arethusa, but for fruity or more combined flavors, I think I'd lean towards Ashley's. That all said, Ashley's is a basic scoop shop for ice cream. If I remember correctly, prices are really fair for ice cream and the flavors were extensive. Creamiest ice cream I've ever had. Went with my family after a long tour of Yale University, and it was a great refreshment. The sweet cream was rich and milky, but my favorite was the butter crunch which was basically sweet cream with bits of toffee, two of my favorite things. The coffee oreo wasn't as life changing as I expected because the coffee flavor was a little dull, but it was still good. Peach was alright, although I thought it tasted a little like medicine. The oreo was pretty good and slightly better than other oreo flavors I've had in other places. Mint chip was pretty cool since it wasn't green colored but the mint ice cream was white and had small chocolate bits in it. Are you crazy? 3.5 stars? Ashley's is the best ice cream in the New Haven area by far, and the downtown store is great. The servers are cool and friendly, and the seating is usually sufficient. The vibe is pretty much the same as the old Ashley's that used to be here when I was a kid. Being and Oreo Ice Cream lover, I absolutely adore all the different flavors of Oreo: Mint Oreo, Coffee Oreo (the two best), Strawberry Oreo, Chocolate Oreo, Raspberry Oreo ... you get the picture. They also have some great other flavors, grapenut is really good, butter pecan, pumpkin ... Compared to other ice cream stores today, the prices are very reasonable and are always generous portion-wise. And their sundaes, mmmmmmmmm .... Maybe I'm just nostalgic about Ashley's since I grew up with it and being away from New Haven now, but I am just really surprised it only has 3.5 stars. Stopped by Ashley's for Saturday night dessert with the wife. It was packed! Partly because there was a overwhelming demand for ice cream, but also because the service was slow, and somewhat scatterbrained. There were three guys behind the counter, with no real system in place for moving the line along, no real flow. The wife had a small chocolate-chocolate chip with sprinkles, and she really enjoyed it. I was not so lucky. I ordered a chocolate shake with extra chocolate syrup, but what I received was more like big, flavorless cup of extra cold chocolate milk. The person who made it seemed determined to scrap the bottom of the ice cream bucket (instead of cracking open a new one), and then over-milked the shake. To add insult to injury, he left it on the mixer for way too long, turning what's billed as an "extra-thick" shake into the thinnest excuse for a milkshake I've ever had. If you have a car, do yourself a favor and go to Wentworth's (Hamden) or Sweet Claude's (Cheshire), both of whom have superior ice cream IMO, as well as friendlier, more eager-to-please staff. read more

Ah, Ashley's. Hadn't been there for years, and then I find myself back in New Haven and of course, had to grab some. I'm a sucker for mint chip. Theirs isn't quite minty enough, but has a creamy consistency, good mouth feel and lots of high-quality chocolate chips. I also had some hot fudge on top. It was truly excellent. Bittersweet and rich, it helped make me feel better about the lack of mintiness of the ice cream. Friends had coffee oreo, sweet cream, chocolate chip and pronounced them good. There were tons of toppings available - sprinkles, gummy candies, chocolate chips, M&Ms, cookie dough, brownie bits, etc. All toppings were the same price, including the hot fudge. And speaking of price, it's expensive. My small cup with hot fudge cost over $4. Whoa! They were training someone while I was there, so it was a bit off-putting to hear the manager say stuff like "fill it to here, not too high, charge them this," and not really pay attention to me. My girlfriend and I just moved here and ate at Ashley's at least once or twice everyday. We went in the evening and were happy with the girls' friendliness and amazing service. Our impression changed yesterday (Tue 8/14/12) in the afternoon (around 1 pm) when the guy was working by himself. He's a big guy in his mid 30-40's. This guy let customers (two beside my girlfriend and I) waited while he was doing his own thing. Then, he talked to each of us in an impatient manner. When he asked whether I wanted anything else, I even had to say, "No thanks, it seems like you're busy." I must add, the guy also touches the ice cream with his hands and his arm touches the ice cream bucket. That's pretty disgusting. And he claims himself to be a "managing partner" for almost 10 or 20 years? (he mentioned 20 years the first time, then 10 the second time...) I suggest going to Ashley's when the girls are working (mainly in the evening) assuming the ice cream are no longer contaminated by this guy's work. read more

I'm going to pretend it's not pathetic and admit that I have been to Ashley's about five times in one week this month, at various locations, stalking the banana oreo ice cream. Best Ice Cream in New Haven. It doesn't get any better than a scoop of Ashley''s base sweet cream. Sure, they've got about 25 other flavors that change regularly and cover the gamut of fruit, crunch, mint, or coffee flavors, and about 10-15 topping to add in, but when the basic stuff is this good, you dont have to elaborate on it. Watch out at the tables though...previous patrons rarely clean up after themselves and the tables are sticky. This place gets 2 stars only because the people are nice, the location is convenient, and the atmosphere is cheerful. If I were judging by the quality of the ice cream alone, I could not give it more than one star in good conscience. Like many ice cream shops in America, this place serves ice cream that is sickeningly sweet, gooey and creamy, and in portions that are far too large to consume. In fact, whether I am hungry or full, I can rarely stomach more than a few spoonfuls of this stuff. I expect ice cream to be somewhat refreshing and this stuff is not refreshing in the slightest; it makes one feel thirsty and if you eat too much, it makes you feel sick. Flavor-wise it loses too. There are a lot of flavors to choose from but most of them taste weak and are dominated by the sweet, buttery quality of the ice cream. Ice cream ought to be aromatic and explode in flavor when it reaches your tongue. This stuff is bland; all I can taste is sugar and fat. I don't understand why this place is all the rage. Ashley's is some of the best ice cream you can get anywhere. Even the sweet cream base is to die for. Some of my favorites are their oreo and double chocolate ice creams covered in peanut butter sauce. Their homemade toppings are on par with their ice cream. The hot fudge is like a liquid brownie, their peanut butter sauce is perfection, and even their whipped cream is fresh whipped daily. The soft serve on the other hand is nothing special--but if you're going to Ashley's, why waste your time on soft serve? Go all out with a sundae. read more
