This was a great spot for lunch. They have lunch buffet for $15 Wednesday-Sunday. We arrived just as they opened at 11am. We wee the only ones there. All the servers and owner greeted us when we encountered them. The dining area is clean and easy access to the buffet. Food options were slightly spicy, nothing too bad if you are used to spice. My husband didn't notice anything spicy so if you eat anything with spice you will be fine. Food ranged from sides to dessert with vegetarian and meat options. Was a great range from Dosas to Biryani. Everything was flavorful, nothing was dry and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. It was great to be able to try different things than what we typically order. They bring a basket of naan to your table and waters. Server was very attentive with the water refills and picking up finished plates. This will be a regular spot in our lunch rotation. I love Ashoka for their authentic Indian cuisine. I've ordered take out many many times, but recently dined in. It was a Tuesday evening and there weren't many people there. The servers were attentive but not pushy, and were knowledgeable and able to answer questions we had. The Matar Paneer is my favorite dish at Ashoka and I get it every time. The paneer is perfectly fried and the sauce is creamy and delicious. We also ordered the Aloo Gobi, and it was hardy and filling. Ended the trip with sweet and sticky Gulab Jamon. I've been here so many times. Best Indian restaurant in all of michigan. I haven't tried some in Detroit but among the ones in Troy, RO, Rochester, it's unbeatable in high quality food. I've had the chole bathura, lamb biriyani, and the classic butter chicken with naan combo. Came here with a group and it was a good time! It has a large dining area with plenty of seating for parties of all sizes. The menu is extensive, covering classic indian dishes, along with some indo-chinese influences . We got the assorted appetizer (samosa and other deep fried veggies), naan, butter chicken (of course..), vegetarian haka noodles, chicken 65, malai kofta, and baigan bartha. The food took a while to come out (~20-30 minutes), but all the dishes came out relatively close to one another. All of them were soo tasty! You can adjust the level of spice too depending on your group, just let the server know. My favorites included the butter chicken and malai kofta since the flavors of the sauces mixed with the naan and plain rice were so good. The not so memorable dishes included the assorted appetizer (tasted mainly like oil, the samosa was good), and the haka noodles (a bit lacking in flavor). The four of us put down our Hamiltons and enjoyed our introduction to this restaurant's lunch buffet. I can safely say that we all enjoyed it immensely and that it totally exceeded our expectations. It's a great balance of price, quality, quantity and value that should satisfy anyone's Indian food craving. It's not a big buffet, being on the smaller side of what I've seen but what they have is excellent. There's plenty of entrees, sides and desserts and they change things up from day to day as evidenced by their use of sticky notes to denote what dish is in each pan. On the day we went there was a variety of vegetarian dishes along with 2 chicken and one lamb dish. I sampled about half the items and loved everything but the Bhaji which is a green bean dish that just fell flat for me until I mixed in a little Makhani sauce. Try that and thank me later. The restaurant is clean enough and the service was better than the average Indian place. I really liked this restaurant and I would go again tomorrow if I could. I've been here so many times for the past 15+ years and this place is generally bomb! This particular time we came here it was slammed...very busy on a random Tuesday night & lack of employees. The owner was hustling, as he usually is...but taking orders, cleaning tables, hosting people...he really was something else and we all appreciated him for it! Despite being very busy, food and service were relatively fast & delicious. We ordered the wrong cauliflower...this isn't as good as gobi Manchurian. Also tried the veggie rolls for the first time and those were good...What a pleasant mix of veggies and a delicious mix of spicy flavor. I had the dhal makhani and as always--excellent! Updating this review yet again ... I went here today with a fellow Yelper, and everything was delicious. I had the chicken masala (Thali, which includes rice, naan, cucumber sauce, curry cauliflower, a small rice pudding dessert, and a few other sauces/small dishes) and we split an order of naan stuffed with onion - very tasty! Every time I come here, the food is delicious, and it seems to be a bit more inexpensive than other places in the area too - you can get a lunch weekday buffet for $9.95 ($10.95 on weekends), and my Thali dish today was $14.95. (even if you get your dish non-Thali, for about $10.95-$11.95, it still comes with rice and naan, which is unusual - at other Indian places in the area, naan is not included) I tend to only come here like once a year or so but I think I will start changing that :) their food is very good and so is the service. read more

We have experienced consistently great tasting Indian food and dependable service at Ashoka. Because of this it is one of our regulars when we have to have an Indian cuisine fix. The biggest issue I have when it comes to most Indian restaurants is that I have in mind a particular dish, for example Shrimp Vindaloo, but if it is lunch time, and the restaurant has an Indian Buffet, I will almost always decide on the buffet. That's the case here at Ashoka. Don't get me wrong, I love Indian buffets because of the variety of dishes available including appetizers, soups, entrees, and desserts. For me personally, there is a danger with many types of ethnic foods because I have a peanut and cashew allergy. These are common ingredients in many Indian dishes. So for buffets and even some things from the menu I always ask which dishes I need to avoid and chefs are always willing to come out and explain the ingredients in each dish; so far I haven't died or had to rush to a hospital. Add the friendly staff here and a large number of Indian customers and Ashoka is a winner! read more

The service is so fast, and the server comes around every so often to refill drinks. The food comes out at a reasonable time, and the food is just amazing! My girlfriend was in town and was craving Indian food and after searching around on yelp and getting recommendations from friends we decided to try out this place. I can say without a doubt that this is our favorite Indian food place that we have tried out of the ones in the Troy area. We ordered a decent spread of food included butter chicken, chicken Tikki masala, and Palak Paneer. We thought that the portions were gonna be small based on the pictures on yelp but we were pleasantly surprised when they were bigger than they seem. They also have generous servings of naan and rice with each entree. The food was absolutely delicious and we tried our best to eat through everything but were ultimately stuffed. We did bring home the leftovers to eat the next day and they were still just as delicious. This is our go-to spot now when it comes to Indian food and what we will be recommending to our friends! read more

Had to give one star because 0 stars isn't an option. I'm here on a work trip, ordered in because I read good things- I ordered the vegetarian samosas and butter chicken.... the samosas were okay... nothing to rave about but the butter chicken was probably one of the worst meals I've had. The chicken tasted completely fake and sour. The easiest way I can describe the entree was imagine buying a "butter chicken TV dinner" from Walmart, microwaving it and then letting it sit in the fridge for a few days before eating it. The food we had from Ashoka Indian Cuisine was terrific. I really enjoyed it. Ashoka specializes in South Indian, North Indian, Mughlai, and Indian Chinese (Indo-Chinese) cuisine. The restaurant is in Troy. There used to be a location in Canton, but it closed. Ashoka catered a cocktail hour and wedding reception that my fiancee and I attended at The Henry, Autograph Collection (hotel) in Dearborn. It was a huge reception. And by huge, I'm guesstimating at least 250-300 guests. Cocktail hour was a meal unto itself. Passed bites included lamb chops and some sort of croquette. The lamb chops were juicy and well-seasoned. Then, there was a double-sided self-serve buffet line outside the reception ballroom. This buffet consisted of: * Mixed Pakora * Cauliflower Manchuarian Dry * Vegetable Spring Rolls * Chicken 65 * Mint Chutney * Tamarind Chutney * Chili Sauce Plus basmati rice, a lentil dish, another dish with meat and vegetables, and Mediterranean food like pita bread, hummus, baba ghanoush, and tabbouleh salad. These latter items weren't labeled, but the asterisked items were. I'm not sure why that was, but it would've been nice if Ashoka labeled everything (assuming everything indeed came from Ashoka) so all the guests were clear what all the food was. I tried everything. During cocktail hour, my favorites were definitely the mixed pakora, cauliflower Manchurian dry, veggie spring rolls, and chicken 65, with the chicken 65 being my top favorite. Of course, this was all the fried stuff. These items tasted fresh, warm, flavorful, and delectably crispy. I was pretty happy with the quality considering the food was prepared in mass quantities. The chicken 65 was quite savory with great flavor. It was lip-smacking good. The veggie spring rolls came with a yummy sweet chili sauce (reminiscent of or perhaps even the same as the sweet Thai chili sauce I grew up eating). I could have easily gotten full off of these items alone, but I had to pace myself knowing dinner was coming. There was even a late-night snack towards the end of the reception (pizzas/flatbreads) that I couldn't touch because I was so stuffed. The other cocktail hour items were A-OK. When dinnertime rolled around, Ashoka presented another double-sided self-serve buffet; this time, containing the following (going off the label names here): * Pulav Rice * Mutter Paneer * Aloo Gobi * Bendi Masala * Chicken Tikka Masala * Lamb Chili Masala * Naan * Raitha * Pickle This was a nice assortment of Indian food. The pulav rice is the same thing as pulao (or pilaf). This pulao was fairly plain (more plain than the rice served during cocktail hour, in fact), made with white basmati rice and green peas, among a couple other ingredients. The mutter (mattar) paneer was good. It's a North Indian dish consisting of peas and paneer cheese in a garam-masala-spiced, tomato-based sauce. I thought the aloo gobi was OK. Aloo gobi is turmeric-yellow-colored cooked potatoes and cauliflower. The bendi (bhindi) masala was one of my favorites from dinner. It's a pretty simple, but very satisfying dish made of okra stir-fried with spices. It had wonderful flavor and, as a lover of okra, I couldn't get enough of it. The okra was chopped into bite-size pieces. I will say I think they were cooked to more than my liking, but still very good nonetheless. I liked the chicken tikka masala better than the lamb chili masala. Ashoka's chicken tikka masala was pretty solid with fairly tender chunks of chicken and a rich and creamy curry sauce. The lamb chili masala was alright. It was tasty, but I didn't like the flavors as much as the chicken tikka masala. The naan, raitha (raita - yogurt), and pickles were par for the course. The pickles were nice and spicy. Other foods on the dinner buffet, not labeled nor listed above, included salad with iceberg lettuce, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, and white onion, and papadum (thin, crisp, seasoned dough). The papadum was very light, crispy, and delicate. Overall, during both cocktail hour and the dinner reception, I thought the quality of the food from Ashoka was good. I enjoyed my recent meal at Ashoka. I ordered naan, chicken curry and shrimp biryani at medium heat. It smelled and tasted just as I remembered it, aromatic, spicy and flavorful. The staff was attentive and polite. My only complaint is I was the only diner in the restaurant until my last few minutes there when another couple came in. I hope this isn't typical for a weeknight. Stepped in to this place for late lunch around 1:40judging from the fact that they close at 2:30 and we planned on ordering and not participating in the buffet, yes we were late. The buffet looked okay but everything seemed heavy on spices and gravy so we decided to order. We went with tandoor mix kabobs which come with lamb, chicken, fish and shrimp kabobs all served with onions and green pepper on this hot grill/skillet thing. It came out piping hot and cost about $17. We also ordered buttery naan which was $1.95 a piece. Since the dish was all grilled meats and seafood marinaded in their decadent tandoori spices, we asked for some kind of yogurt dip on the side. This was probably such a delicious experience. The lamb was a bit over cooked and and fish was too salty but everything was so deliciously grilled. Massive prawns were given to us at this price, extremely reasonable judging from the fact that the entire grill was filled to the brim with protein, and the yogurt dip made it go down easy. The naan's were so delicious and freshly made. The interior is a little drab, the atmosphere is slow as well. Clean but just boring. The ambience isnt helped with the music either. The waiters seem extremely antisocial and shy, and we could barely hear our waiter although he was super sweet. The bill came to about $28 and we had left overs! 3 naans and an entire skillet of protein goodies just to try ashoka out. It was a pleasant toe dippin in to the ashoka pool! First visit today was a strong foot in the right direction. I came together with a few fellow Yelpers for the lunch buffet, having heard that Ashoka's food is good, even the lunch buffet's. It should be noted that I'm leery of most buffet food, as experience tells me it can be iffy at best. Not here, though. Here, the lunch buffet food was better than expected, quite honestly. They started out by bringing to the table four pieces of tandoori chicken, and it was darned good. How they can get rid of the chicken skin and yet keep the chicken moist, I'll never understand, but they somehow do. A nice deep red in color, it was nice and flavorful. Also brought to the table for us was a perfectly good naan. I thought it was perfectly good, anyway. The real surprise, to me though, was the buffet itself. Sure, there were vegetarian dishes/soups/sauces, but there was also a couple of different chicken dishes (korma and curried-on-the-bone), plus: there was a very welcome madras lamb curry, and that's what really piqued my interest. Lamb, unground lamb anyway, isn't cheap, and it would have been entirely forgivable had they not had any available...but they *did*. And it hit home with me, as I happen to have very partial feelings towards madras lamb curry, and theirs was very nice. I had seconds of this. I had several different things, actually, and sure, not everything resonated with me, but *most* things did, and were happily consumed. Too, my table companions were quite happy with what they were able to try as well, and the rice pudding received high remarks from them as well. The very best rice pudding in the world wouldn't get me to bat an eye, but they all seemed to like it, so there you go. $10 for this lunch experience is *surprisingly* cheap...I would have thought that including lamb in the buffet would have been $12 for sure. Service was fine by the staff, though I wish the floor itself had been cleaner; maybe it's time for a thorough deep clean of the restaurant's floor, or something. Other than that, there wasn't much to complain about. Restroom was clean and well-stocked. Parking was convenient. Buffet food choices were nice and varied...vegetarians deferring from NeeHee's could feel right at home, here, and probably for less money.
