Have wanted to try Turkish coffee for awhile and we found ourselves walking past this place after eating dinner and decided it was the perfect time! Oh man was it amazing, got the cardamom coffee to go with a piece of Helva for my little and the Chocolate baklava for me and hubs to split! The server was so nice and made sure to inform me the right way to just sip the coffee as it's not like regular drinking coffee- he asked I preferred sweet coffee and I said yes so he added a little sugar and it was just beautiful! My little demolished the Helva and hubs and I enjoyed our chocolate baklava at the end of a very fun but busy day! The shop it's self is small but beautiful as were the other customers enjoying their coffee made room for my little at the counter to look at all the treats in the case! Can't wait to head back and try some of the other yummy treats they have to offer! read more

How I heard of this place: On a visit to Bellingham a couple of years ago, my sister and mother told us about this new Turkish cafe downtown with sweet reminiscences of our visits to Turkey. We simply had to give it a try. And continue coming back. Type of cuisine: Turkish fare - from simit and borek, to cardamom or pistachio infused Turkish coffee, apricot and apple teas, baklava and lokum. We have always loved the foods, mostly imported directly from Turkey. Ambiance: Sweet and cozy, the space is full of beautiful Turkish art/craft - from lighting to seating, from merchandise to the tasty treats served, we love our bay window benches and small, tiled tables that barely hold everything we order. The brother-owners are always wreathed in smiles and humble, grateful service. The music is soft, but always a surprise - sometimes Turkish, sometimes rock, sometimes jazzy, always fun and unobtrusive. We also love the huge barrel "tables" used as outdoor seating under a covered "patio". What I ordered: I was sad to hear that they no longer make/serve their refreshing and lovely apricot tea, so I chose a sweet cardamom coffee. My sister each chose a turkish coffee and pistachio coffee. A hot chocolate for my husband and two apple teas for the children. We ordered one of each selection of baklava available - pistachio, walnut, chocolate pistachio, halva and another walnut treat. Not to mention peach and blackberry lokum. We also ordered a potato & cheese sandwich; they ran out of the bread so substituted potato borek topped with cheese for our savory snack. What I loved: Always the service; quiet, humble, spot on. The coffee is truly magnificent and fully takes you back to Turkey. The baklava is sweet and soaked in honey, just like the cafes in Istanbul, and the beautiful lighting mesmerizes each of us every time. For the past four years when I do road trip therapy up to Skagit and Whatcom counties or detour from Vancouver, BC or Lummi Island, I tend to stop by my usual favorites. This time I decided to check out Ashuri Baklava and Cafe in downtown Bellingham (10/29/22). Looks like it has been open for a little over a year. Credit goes to fellow Yelp Elite, Michael B and the chefs/owners at Hamdi in Seattle for putting this spot on my radar screen. I lucked out and found parking nearby, but unfortunately couldn't stay longer and indulge in a Turkish coffee and treats onsite. It is a tiny spot with limited indoor and sidewalk seating. I enjoyed the bright interior, decor, and looking at available merch on display. Clearly much care are given to featured curated items. Also as an aside, there are caffeine free, dairy free, vegan options available. The items I did get to go though included a selection of baklava from the lower of two front shelves in the display case, spinach and feta borek, and rose locum (Turkish delight). I don't really eat baklava but I'll review this the best I can. there was a nice surprise waiting for me. normally it was 30 for 10 pieces but the person behind the counter said he would cut me a deal for 25 for 10 pieces. So naturally I had to get the super sampler to get a nice variety of baklava. I will say 3 of them tasted the same and the chocolate one was distinguishable as well as the pistachio. the pistachio especially was drying and I feel like it was way too unbaklavay. definitely check it out for some great baklava there's parking nearby but the interior is quit small so not the best place to sit down and eat baklava. read more

Food: 4.8 -- I tried Salep for the first time (a hot beverage w/milk, cinnamon, and a flour made from wild orchid tubers), which was really lovely. I tried 2 pieces of sweet baklava, both of which were delightful. I also ordered a small portion of Turkish sausage (off-menu), and I was surprised at how much I loved that because I usually don't enjoy sausages that much. And I got 2 kinds of savory pastries called "borek" (1 potato-onion, and 1 spinach-feta). It was all yummy (I found the spinach-feta borek a tiny bit dry, which is the only reason I didn't give the food a full "5." A minor quibble, to be sure, but that made me wonder if there's a hot sauce (or any kind of sauce) that's commonly used in Turkish cuisine.) I loved this place! The inside was beautiful and thoughtfully decorated. It sounds like two brothers who were originally from Turkey own the place - but I totally overheard that, so I could be wrong. I had the cardamom coffee, my husband had the lemon hot fruit tea, we each had a mussel baklava, and we bought some Turkish delight. The cafe was decorated with these gorgeous Turkish lamps on the ceiling. It was such a treat to discover this side of the culture's cuisine! Ashuri serves a list of traditional Turkish drinks and timeless Turkish desserts and savoury pastries as well. We ordered the Kadayif + Pistachio Baklava +Turkish Coffee + Menengic. The Turkish Coffee has a nice bold flavour. The Menengic is creamy, not caffeinated and made of terebinth berries. Both drinks are in a small cup that is meant to be sipped slowly until you hit the thick grounds on the bottom. A very nice place for coffee and exotic Turkish sweets (and some savory treats). At first I was confused. Is this a breakfast place or what? Well it is not a breakfast place. Ashuri opens at 10 am just on time for coffee break. Ashuri closes at 8 pm. Which seems to be a good time to stop drinking coffee (if you want to sleep anyway) Ashuri most abundant offering is Turkish coffee. The coffee is a real treat. If you haven't had Turkish coffee before, we'll it isn't Starbucks. Turkish coffee is like espresso with the grounds in the bottom of the cup. The eating at Ashuri is great. All of the products are air shipped in from Turkey (Istanbul). I only tried a few of the many varieties of Turkish treats (oh yes the have Baklava). All of the treats were great. Amazing baklava! My wife and I recently visited as part of a Yelp Event. We really enjoyed meeting and talking to Kris and Lukas, the owners. Great guys, very passionate about culture cuisine! So nice to see a new coffee shop opening up here in Bellingham. And it's not just a coffee shop, it's a coffee shop that brew Turkish coffee and offers baked pastries like Baklava. First time having Turkish coffee and no sure if it's for me. Super smooth and strong..even my small cup sampler was strong. I am so happy! Tipped off by daughters I was cued to the opening of Ashuri. Entering the front doors and you are standing in a Turkish Cafe. Immediately I was greeted by the wonderfully handsome staff. You will love them. Turkish delight samples were quickly offered. My choice was Borek (a light pastry with cheese) which they warmed so the outside was crispy. Assorted Turkish Delight, Pistachio Roll, and Baklava. All completely delicious. We stopped by this place in Bellingham on the way to Vancouver, and the baklava here is pretty good. An assortment of 10 baklavas is $30, but the owner premade a box of 10 baklavas for $25 instead, and so we went with that one since it has two of each of everything, and one helva. The baklavas they offered include the mussel baklava, walnut baklava, pistachio baklava, and chocolate baklava. Most of the baklavas more or less taste the same, with just slight variations - for example, the chocolate baklava tasted primarily chocolate as the name suggests. I personally like the pistachio baklava the most even though the pistachio flavor is not super pronounced. The helva is well priced given the sugary satisfaction, with primarily sesame and sugar, but I personally find this to be way too sweet even for a quarter of a piece. Overall, the baklavas are high quality, a hidden gem tucked in the relatively small town of Bellingham, and this is a place a friend goes to fairly often whenever he goes to or from Vancouver. read more

Delightful new cafe serving authentic Turkish coffee and teas. They import their baklava from a fifth generation producer in Istanbul, and will gladly take you through the differences between each of their offerings and any other baklava found within 100 or more miles. I was transported back to Turkey for a moment & remembered eating such awesome baklava in Istanbul! I love that the Turkish baklava had pistachios (one of my favorite nuts), but they also had a sample that had walnuts, equally yummy! I was under the impression that the baklava was local made. It is not. I love the interior decor, though very tiny. I tried the Turkish coffee for the first time. It was very different, and quite sludgy at the bottom ( maybe it's supposed to be that way). It wasn't my favorite. The guy explained the menu thoroughly and was friendly and helpful. After a weekend of camping we planned on headed to Bellingham to grab some baklava. This was our first experience at Ashuri but it won't be our last! When you first walk in you need to look up. The chandeliers are the most beautiful thing you have ever seen! I would design an entire house just around them. Not to be upstaged by the decor is the coffee and baklava. I'm not typically a coffee fan but I tried it anyway. Lord have mercy it's strong but not burnt at all and my husband loved it. The Turkish delights were amazing. They have an awesome chew to them that you just can't find local until now. Don't make my mistake by buying the little bag, go big. Saved the best for last. The baklava was just the right amount of crunch with the right amount of sweet syrup. If you didn't know they imported it in you would have no idea. The standard pistachio was my absolute favorite of the ones I tried but all of them were great. This is a lovely cafe serving authentic Turkish breakfasts and desserts. The Borek with spinach was light and flaky - would get again. The baklava was so fresh I thought it was locally made, but it's actually imported from Turkey. The pieces are larger than most store-bought trays and deliciously sweet and flaky. The chocolate ones were particularly delightful and an interesting non-traditional twist. The only downside is that it's pricey, but that's a given with baklava, and the quality here is superb! The ambiance in the cafe is warm and cozy - you'll feel like you've been transported it Istanbul. So exciting for Bellingham to have this unique spot! read more
