My friend and I stopped by Mamahuhu for lunch. It's been on my list for a while. It is a fast casual restaurant so you order at the front counter kiosk then find a seat. It wasn't too busy on a holiday Monday lunch time. Lazi Chicken (4/5): This was crispy rice-battered chicken with sichuan chili oil, numbing dry spice, dried chili peppers, and pickled veggies. The chicken was incredibly crispy! We got the chili oil on the side. The flavor was good without being too salty. Eggplant tofu (4/5): The eggplant had a good texture. It came with fried soft tofu, fermented black beans, bell pepper, mushroom gravy, and basil. My favorite part of the dish was the tofu. We also ordered a side of jasmine rice to go with everything. It was a good casual lunch. A bit pricey but we shared everything family style so not too bad.

This was my first time here. I was meeting a friend here. Service was good, indoor dining, & ambiance was good. We went on a Wed evening around 7p and there was seating. My friend got the cashew chicken and she said it was really good. We shared the fries. They were good. Typical fries. I ordered the eggplant & tofu rice dish. The bowl that my entree came in reminded me of a kids bowl, not the size, but it was the pink plastic kind. Despite the aesthetic of the bowl, I really liked my dish! It was very tasty and the eggplant wasn't too oily or mushy. It was so good!! I definitely would come back and order this dish again!

San Francisco is the best place in America to get Chinese American food. There are so many Chinese American restaurants to go to in so many different Chinese regional dishes in almost every neighborhood of the city. There is one place with two locations in San Francisco which uses organic ingredients. They have classic dishes like the sweet and sour chicken in SF. On a weekend before the Thanksgiving holiday Autumn stroll in the Inner Richmond ( not the city) on Clement street there is a place which offers new menu items and offers casual dinning experience. Mamahuhu is an organic Chinese American restaurant with two San Francisco locations with one in Noe Valley and the one I was most recently at in the Inner Richmond in San Francisco. They also sell alcohol like craft beer and wines. They have dishes like the Mushroom Mapo Tofu and the Lazi Chicken in SF. They also have crispy chicken sandwiches like Honey Hawthorn and Super Savory. I got the Rangoon which was crispy and a bit crunchy. It came with a sauce which gave the Rangoon's a savory and not too sweet taste. They also host events such as Mahjong Monday. A good place to enjoy organic Chinese American food. Mamahuhu is a true "reflection"of the Chinese American food "intersection " and also having a strong San Francisco city "connection " and they serve organic chicken and mushroom dishes so they have a great food "selection" There is lots of great Chinese American restaurants on Clement street on each block from right to "left "and all over the city in "depth"at different neighborhoods " in SF" and including Mamahuhu which is operated by a James Beard Award winner and a "Michelin-starred Chef"

Mamahuhu means "so-so" in mandarin and tbh, I'm surprised that was one of the few words I remembered from middle school lol. Mamahuhu is an elevated & casual Asian fusion restaurant from Chef Brandon Jew, and is located around Clement & 6th Ave. There is limited street parking and mostly meter. What makes them stand out (at least to me) is their pineapple bun chicken sandwich. You don't see that around often and one time when I stopped by during work, this dim sum lady who worked nearby said in Chinese "oh look, these guys just came out of the restaurant" and I responded back "yeah, look - pineapple bun chicken sandwiches!!" and was shooketh and told her colleague LOL. Asian food is usually shared, but since the demographic is mixed, they do offer a rice plate (serving for 1) or the house specials (serving for 1-2). The rice plate consists of any house special protein, served with crunchy sesame cucumbers and jasmine rice. Limited menu but the pineapple bun chicken sandwiches are a must try at least once! I have tried the honey hawthorn which is basic and the tingly spicy. The tingly spicy has a subtle numbing spice to it. Not sure what the super savory is, but curious to try it next time. I've had the lazi chicken, jade fried rice, and crunchy mala cucumber. The lazi chicken is double fried and is soo crispy-crunchy, but has mild Szechuan spice. It's one of my favorites here! The jade fried rice is pretty good and I prefer the crunchy mala cucumber over the crunchy sesame cucumbers - gotta love a little kick to it! Definitely worth a visit - can't wait to try other dishes on the menu!

I have an updated review with the same amount of stars. This time I tried all different items and the place is good but a lil pricey. I love the simple clean atmosphere. Its reminds me of updated modernistic cafeteria or something. The service was great! The food was not great just average. I prefer authentic Chinese over this fusion kind. The chow main was kinda like tomato spaghetti...super rich in tomato flavor. Chicken sando, not that spicy and kinda mids with hand cut potatoes let's not call those "fries" . Vegan soft serve was odd and a maybe they used Oat milk which I cannot stand. Flavor was off not really tasting like a boba as described. Its worth a try and some may enjoy it but its not for me. I wont be returning.

Fast food version of Brandon Jew. Ordered the tingly spicy chicken sandwich, per the server this is one of the popular dish. For vegetarian dish I ordered tomato garlic noodle. Order came quite fast, started with the chicken sandwich, while waiting for my noodle I was offered sweet and sour soup, which I gladly tried. Chicken was crispy and bun was nice and buttery, the side fries was not bad either. The soup is pretty yummy exactly what I expect from chef Jiu. Noodle hit my palette very strong on the first bite and a little sweet. After devouring half of the bowl I couldn't continue, this is not the kind of dish that you can stuff yourself to oblivion and still want more. The flavor is way too strong, great on first few bite but too much after a while. Hot tea was great to down the flavor down, which is not something I usually do.

Finally got a chance to check out Mamahuhu on Clement for their famous Bao Burger. The Savory Chicken Bao Burger is an absolute beast with crispy, juicy fried chicken coated with killer umami packed seasoning, tucked into a soft, pillowy bao bun toasted so that it holds up without getting soggy. The sauce brings that sweet-savory punch, pickles cut through perfectly which prompted me to demolish it in record time and I'm already plotting the next visit. Hands down one of the best chicken sandwiches around. Fries were crispy, well-seasoned & hot when they arrived, but nothing special or memorable. They do the job as a side without stealing any thunder from the bao burger. Vibe is casual and modern, service quick and friendly (even with the Clement Street foot traffic), kind of pricey but fair enough with the high food quality. Street parking on Clement is the usual hunt, circle or grab a spot nearby. Killer bao burger carries the show, fries play support without drama. Solid choice in the Richmond district lineup. Definitely heading back for more of that chicken goodness. 4.5 stars. Bao burger is the star--don't sleep on it.

Mamahuhu is like Panda Express for San Francisco hipsters -- in a good way. I wouldn't necessarily take my Gen X asian parents here, but I appreciate what they're trying to do with Chinese American takeout staples and would come back for a solid fried chicken sandwich (more on that later). The interior is fun, colorful, and kind of reminded me of a yassified early-2000s Taco Bell. The serving sizes are on the smaller size but satisfy. There's also a 5% upcharge on the food. Our order: rice plate ($16) - we chose their sweet & sour chicken, which is listed on the menu as a "must try." It's a crispier, more acidic version of the classic dish (typically, it's sweet and sour pork). I appreciated the char on the bell peppers, onion and pineapple, the latter of which provided nice bursts of tartness and sweetness. During our visit, it with a small side of crunchy sesame cucumbers (the sides rotate) which fulfilled their duty as something light and fresh to break up all the heavier fried stuff but were otherwise unmemorable. tingly spicy pineapple bun chicken sandwich ($13) - the star here, of course, is the crisp and juicy fried chicken, which stands on its own. Here the spice levels are clearly for a westernized Cantonese American palate, which is to say it's not all that spicy. I wish the pineapple bun top was actually crisp and properly crumbly (like the ones at Pineapple King over in the Sunset) -- unfortunately, the bun I had didn't add much other than conceptual novelty. I wonder about the choice to use carrot slices instead of the more typical julienne, since mine kept slipping out. Overall, it's a saucy, messy, wonderful experience.

Mapo Tofu with Pork (House Special)
    Justin W.

There's a ton of options to order for counter-order Chinese American food. Interior felt pretty modern and creative as do a lot of the food options. We got Mapo Tofu with Pork, the MSG, and both the classic spicy and non-spicy pineapple bun chicken sandwiches. The batter on the chicken sandwich was airy, light and sandwich came perfectly sweet, salty from the aioli and a bit spicy. I did expect the pineapple bun crust to have more of a crunch or flavor profile, and I think the sweetness of the orange-duck like sauce overpowers it. The Mapo Tofu and MSG were seasoned very well -- tons of umami in both. I didn't get a chance to try any of the more Chinese-American themed rice plates. I'd say they didn't seem worthwhile for the price.

Unfortunately, the quality of Mamahuhu's food went down significantly lately. I am ok with bland food as long as it's fresh, but mamahuhu was neither flavorful nor fresh today (again). Their Tofu was mushy and soggy -- we only had a bite and left the rest of the plate untouched. Even rice was clumped and overcooked. Ehhhhh

An incredible, affordable, and delicious place to go for lunch, dinner, or any time you're craving tasty Chinese / Asian fusion cuisine. My family discovered this place in 2023 and I ask them to bring leftovers in a cooler and bring it back to LA cause it's SO GOOD! I would eat it every month if I could. This is my second time eating in person and we ordered the sweet and sour chicken rice plate which comes with rice and cucumbers. We always order the tomato garlic chow mein, and wanted to try something new so we ordered the Lazi Chicken house special. Service is order at the counter style and you can sit down. They'll bring the food to you. Super casual and easygoing. Our staff today was friendly and helped answer our questions about the ingredients in some of the foods. Lots of knowledge if you're curious about each dish. We typically order the house specials and get rice on the side to feed between 3-5 people but we just wanted a little bit of rice this time. The portion size for the rice plate is great for one person. The Lazi Chicken was INCREDIBLE. Extremely crispy and the carrots, chilis and accents were a good touch. Amazing flavor and I'm sure this is something I would order every time I come in person since it's best fresh. The garlic chow mein comes with tofu and is a great dish to share with others. This is the best portable item since the noodles make great leftovers and we order this every time we eat here. In the past we usually order the MSG (mushroom, seaweed, garlic) chicken, the broccoli beef, or the mayo tofu. You can't go wrong with anything here - you'll be trying it and coming back for more! I'm a big fan of their Jasmine Tea Soda - gives it a "cream soda" vibe and the jasmine flavor really shines through. I wish they had other locations than San Francisco but it's what keeps me coming back to the city. Can't wait for the next time I eat here again!

Soo good! Only tried the Lazi chicken because I wanted something spicy, and it was exactly what I was looking for. Vibes and decor were also cute

Mamahuhu's name really says it all. In Chinese, it means "so-so," and that's pretty much how the food tasted to me. For the dishes I usually love most, I didn't taste the flavor or the love for the cuisine. The dishes looked nice but were underwhelming. My friends had the sweet and sour chicken and cashew chicken. I tried a bit, but they weren't very flavorful. And when I say flavor, I don't mean salt. I mean aromatics like garlic, ginger, and green onion. There was just something missing in every dish. I always judge a Chinese restaurant by its mapo tofu, and this one didn't have that slow-burning mala heat or much depth in the protein. It felt more like a simplified version of Chinese food, designed to be accessible rather than authentic. That being said, the service was great, and they have mahjong nights, so it's fun to come and hang out with friends. The ice cream was also really good and something I'd definitely come back for.

Very flavorful and well prepared. We also tried the Sichuan Seafood Dumplings and the Iberico Pork Dumplings, both of which were delicious. One order is definitely enough to share. The dumplings come with several dipping sauces including soy sauce, vinegar, chili oil, hot mustard, and a cilantro-based sauce that had a slightly sweet, horseradish-like flavor that really stood out. Wonton Noodles (E1) - this is Cantonese style wonton, with really thin wrappers, along with thin egg noodles that has a firm and toothsome texture. Curry Beef with Rice (G12) - Just like back in Hong Kong! The beef tendon in there is so melty good! You can order the curry beef with noodles too but rice is better to soak up all the curry sauce. Hokkien Fried Rice (G10) - a luscious gravy on top of a fried rice filled with seafood and meat. You'll lick the bowl clean Rice Rolls (B) - their rice rolls are pretty solid too, smooth and slurpy. Just do yourself a flavor, don't order the Xiao Lung Bao Soup Dumplings here. It's not Cantonese, and there are definitely better places to get them. So just focus on Cantonese food here, that's what they excel at.

Pretty good place for gatherings…read more Yummy food, but too much salt. I need to drink too much water afterwards. Too many people in line. Better with reservations. Noisy place but it's normal bc it's a Chinese restaurant.
