    Kung Pao Tofu
    Hannah K.

Truth be told, kung pao tofu is never on my shot list of Chinese-American favorites. I tend to think of it as overly sweet, and the mix of cooked celery and peanuts is a discordant mess that doesn't quite meld. Well, now I can see the appeal, thanks to this hole in the wall. Yes, "Asia Chinese Restaurant" the most generic and forgettable name ever, but their lunch deals make up for that with flavors you'll want to remember. The tofu is fried nicely, with a great meaty texture, and tossed in a garlicky sort of brown sauce with a genuine hint of spice. There's even a whole chili pepper in there, in case you were doubtful! What I really love about this rendition is that they use an abundance of water chestnuts too, which really connects the dots with more crunchy, crispy bites than the usual blend. If you, too, have doubts, just give it a try. For roughly $9 that includes rice, a veggie spring roll, and (non vegan) soup, you can't lose. Side note and bonus points, the fried rice has no egg, so you're good to go, my plant-based friends!

Gave these guys two chances . I went in and ate inside the lobby and as I finished eating I saw a rat run across the lobby under the table of another customer eating . I complained to the manager and nothing was done besides a refund . I gave it a month and went back and ordered take out maybe it'll be better this time . Nope Found maggots ! MAGGOTS IN MY beef broccoli . DO not eat here they don't care about being sanitary!

These guys have been here forever... and the dining room hints at that (dated & always has a weird smell)... but the food has been consistently good since I started eating here nearly 20 years ago. They still have some of the better pork fried rice in the area, and service is always pretty quick. It's situated in a perfect spot for me, near work & kiddo's school, so with simple service & dependable taste, we'll be back some more! Note to self: they changed the egg rolls, you didn't like them much last time... but Tso's was good!

Love coming here. Always a great experience, the food is plated so nicely and tastes so fresh and hot. The servers are sweet and do such a great job. Couldn't wait to bring my boyfriend here. The vibe is definitely first date worthy

Very consistent with fresh, hot food. One of my favorite Chinese restaurants. Excellent dine-in customer service. Ordering to go, however, is straight to the point and terse.

My first time here & I ordered fried dumplings! They were DELICIOUS! Crispy and hot. And they give you a good amount for the price. I will definitely be back to try other dishes.

The bowl itself came loaded with meat--they definitely weren't skimping to save money here. The meat-to-noodle ratio felt great, and every bite actually had substance instead of leaving me fishing around for toppings. As for the broth, I landed somewhere in the middle. It wasn't quite as clear or light as I personally prefer, leaning toward a fattier, milkier undertone that almost reminded me of a Vietnamese pho take on tonkotsu. The flavor itself was undeniably very good, but the richness may have been a bit too much for me personally. One way I usually judge how much I love a pho broth is whether I want to sip the bowl down to the very end, and this one wasn't quite light enough for me to want to do that. I've had richer and deeper pho flavors elsewhere, but I still appreciated the flavor profile here and could absolutely see why this place is so popular. It feels hearty, comforting, and satisfying in a way that clearly resonates with many people. Despite how packed the restaurant was, the atmosphere ended up being surprisingly pleasant. Service moved very quickly, which honestly impressed me given how busy everything felt. Even with the crowd, I didn't dislike the spacing or setup at all--the restaurant still felt comfortable, and the sound of people enjoying their food all around added to the lively, welcoming energy rather than making it feel overwhelming. Overall, Pho Phong Lưu ended up being one of those places where I completely understood the hype, even if it didn't become my personal favorite pho spot. While the broth leaned richer than my preference, I still enjoyed the experience and definitely look forward to trying other dishes next time.

I had my boyfriend pick up the food and he forgot to check for the hoisin sauce. I can't eat pho without it, so I called the store and was told it was offered but that he must not have heard the employee asking. I tried to eat the pho anyway, and it ended up being one of the worst bowls of pho I've ever had. I'm Vietnamese, so I know what good pho should taste like. The broth was extremely bland and watered down, with no aroma or real pho flavor. Without hoisin sauce it was even worse. I tried adding seasoning to make it taste decent but nothing helped. The noodles were also hard and clumped together in one big chunk. I had to microwave them for about three minutes just to get them to separate. In the end, I gave up and threw away our 2 -$18 bowl of pho. The broth tasted worse than instant pho. Very disappointing. I should have known better than to order pho downtown.

The color wasn't too light, so I appreciated that they didn't go heavy on the condensed milk. Summer Rolls/Nem Nuong Cuon ($11): These were underwhelming, pretty bland without the peanut sauce, which I thought was just okay as well. OG Banh Mi ($14): Delicious! It was one of our top two banh mi here, along with the lamb one. The bread was nicely toasted, the pâté came through, and all the flavors were on point. Garlic Butter Prawn Bún ($18): The shrimp were perfectly cooked, though the garlic butter flavor wasn't very strong. The vermicelli and veggies were so fresh and tasty together with the nuoc mam that I was able to eat the leftovers without any protein. Curry Ramen ($16): This was our first time trying curry ramen, so we didn't know what to expect. You got to choose your protein, so we went with chashu. The curry had flavors similar to oc len xa dua and was pretty good, and the ramen itself had a great texture. I still prefer regular ramen but would still recommend trying this at least once.

But it also has egg and scallions and pate; overall the combo is satisfying. Separate from takeout, we decided to go for an early dinner. Their Crab Vermicelli Stir Fry is surprisingly sweet, with sweetness as a prominent flavor. It features plenty of crab bits. I also grabbed a Skillet Combo. It came with two runny side up eggs, pate, two types of cured pork, beef gravy, and a handful of cilantro. The baguette came on the side, as did the mixed salad of lettuce and tomato. The salad had some dried shrimp, fish sauce, and a slightly sweet dressing. The restaurant itself is located in the Chinatown Center on N Lamar. It's a small corner shop. Lots of mirrors and glass. And honestly it's better than any fancy restaurant out there. I love the amount of plants in the space and the TV plays cooking videos and it's so nice to watch while waiting for your food! Speaking of waiting for your food, the food comes out super quick! Within 1 minute of ordering my drink, it came out! And a couple minutes after follows the food. The service is amazing as well, the servers are super sweet and are very quick to serve you and get what you need. The menu offers a bunch of things, appetizers, main dishes, desserts, and the drinks! I love how the desserts and drinks are also Vietnamese (most of the time I notice restaurants tend to have the basic selection of fountain drinks and desserts, but this restaurant has a wide variety of drinks and desserts so you can try something new every time you come here!) Most of all, there's a bunch of vegan dishes which I absolutely love. The food is always delicious I've been trying the vegan dishes recently and I love them a lot (as someone who doesn't like vegan dishes normally)! The chicken pho is also so delicious it tastes better than I make it at home! So much flavor. The drinks are so good as well. They also give you a big portion and I normally have leftovers, but the portion size is amazing for the price that you pay. It's definitely more affordable and such a bang for your buck. This is definitely a spot to try and trust me, you'll probably fall in love! If I was an Austin tourist I would definitely hit up this restaurant. I could go on and on about this restaurant.

Service was just ok - we had a large group and we took up 2 tables that were sitting back to back. The server kept walking back and forth between our 2 tables and kept bumping into my chair/bag which was really annoying me. Other than that, I'd just like to point out that their prices are on the higher side for Viet food. It gave bougie Viet food vibes from the prices, which I thought was unreasonable since the ambiance wasn't anything special or over the top. Probably wouldn't come back unless I was craving their calamari.
