The jumping fish and green beans have always been my favorite, but this time, I tried the Dry Pot Lamb as well. It was so good! First time trying this place, and I mainly wanted to give it a try because it made Austin's Top 25 Restaurants list. It's a cute small restaurant in a strip mall with other Asian stores nearby. The service was great. You go up to the front to order your food, and then they seat you and serve you. I ordered the mapo tofu, which was great. It was super flavorful, and I'm glad I gave it a try. Even though we've been to this complex off Research a ton of times, we had never been to House of Three Gorges until last weekend when we met some friends for an early dinner as soon as they opened. Even at 4:30 pm, the place got pretty slammed. We're a house divided on this place; one of us thinks it was really good, while the other one thought it was only OK. The food comes out fast, alarmingly fast. The fried green beans are always a must for us, and these were good, but not superior to any of the other ones that you can find around town. The bok choy was also typical, and the famed mapo tofu--while wonderfully spicy--was really greasy. We both loved the cumin lamb, our favorite dish. What sets it apart here is that the meat is more "wet", and again, the spice factor was just right. We now have to mention the dumplings. Our kiddo ordered some pork pot stickers, and a woman came out to put the plate in front of her; our daughter then proceeded to move the sauce off the plate and was about to dig in when the woman came back, put the sauce back on the plate and then delivered it to another table!!!!!!!!!! How many food safety laws were violated in that moment is beyond us!! The potstickers were disgusting btw...frozen and overfried and terrible. Overall, the restaurant might have been 3.5 stars, mayyyyyyybe 4, but after the whole Dumpling Situation, we're settling on 3. Doubtful whether we will be back though. read more

I ordered hot and sour pork soup. I had never had hot and sour soup with meat. Portions were generous, ingredients fresh, and the food arrived smoking hot. The noodles were soft, smooth and flavorful. The pork inside looked like tiny meatballs. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the restaurant was completely full and customers were continuing to flow in. Because the restaurant is rather small, I had to wait about 20 minutes for my order. Jim, one of the owners, said if I had ordered 3 items it would take about 45 minutes, that's why I went with one. This was the New Year's Eve dinner I needed! Think of fireworks, a gathering of smiling faces, a line out the door, a great dinner like no other meal, and you have the House of Three Gorges! The House of Three Gorges popped up on a friend's phone. We headed over there, but mistakenly thought it was closed. The lady standing outside said they were going to reopen in 10 minutes. Then she started raving about the food. More cars pulled up, and she said that some of the tables would already be reserved, so we should form a line. Well, by golly, she was right. The line got longer, and once inside, there were two tables with the reserve sign on them, and then three tables were added. We looked over the menu, and we wanted everything. The table next to us was smart. They came as a group of ten, each ordering something different. Every dish brought out looked so yummy, and you could smell the seasoning. I will most definitely do that next time. Also, the portions are so huge that you can easily share a nice portion with your tablemates. But we weren't disappointed that we couldn't order the whole menu, because what we did order was so good, so spicy, and the meat so tender. I ordered the Chongqing Mala Chicken, which had two red hot peppers beside its name on the menu. Now, I must say it had a really nice spicy kick to the dish. The chicken was sliced into short to medium strips. The chicken was very tender with red chilli peppers and Sichuan peppercorns. Now I had only eaten half of my dish. But truth be told, I ate half of my friend Sichian's Dry Stir-Fried Chicken. It was boneless, with dry chili peppers, garlic, peppercorns, and other spices. So we shared our dishes, but we weren't planning to. So we came up with a solution to order the same dishes to take home, and that's what we did. I have been coming here for at least a couple of years and it is my favorite Chinese Szechuan place in Austin. I have never had a bad experience tand everything always is quality good and meets or exceeds expectations. On my first visit a couple years ago I asked the guy what's the best dish? He said they're all good but the best is Jumping Flying Fish. I'm like WTF is that? I looked up pictures and it looked really good and sure enough it was phenomenal. Since then I have tried quite a bit of dishes here. Stir fry Pork, Mapo Tofu - another fave. Love Mala Chicken - wow the spices! Mala Beef was good as well. The dry pot lamb dish has a bit of cumin in it which is a little over powering for me, but I love their other lamb dish. They make a killer fried rice here too! One of the better quality tasting fried rice dishes I have had. Service always great here. Gets busy too and cramped but we make it work. But I cannot say enough about Jumping Flying Fish - my first experience with it here and has been my go to and everyone I share this with loves the dish. read more

I ordered the sliced beef and ox tongue in chili sauce, salt and pepper ribs, Sichuan dry stir fried chicken, mala fish filet, and cumin beef. Everything was really tasty and definitely spicy. The cumin beef was on a completely different level and way spicier than everything else, so if you cannot handle heat, definitely do not get that one. If you love spice though, it is insanely good. The sliced beef and ox tongue had great texture, the ribs were crispy and addictive, and the dry stir fried chicken and mala fish filet had that classic numbing mala kick. Nothing felt watered down and every dish had bold flavor. Service was also good and fast, especially considering how many dishes we ordered. Almost every dish had that Sichuan numbness on your lips and tongue after you eat them except the Mongolian Beef which was delicious but was a tad too sweet...borderline candy-like. Food was delicious, hot and fresh!! Family style, big portions at a good price point. - Cumin Lamb: A heaping pile of thinly sliced lamb that is tender mixed in with cumin seeds, sichuan peppercorns, fresh cilantro, and red chilis. The cumin seeds give it that signature earthy, aromatic flavor and you get a slight tingly numbing spice sensation from the chilis and peppercorn. The lamb is not overly gamey, but it still does taste like lamb so if you are not really a lamb fan, I'd choose something else. - Jumping Fish: A very popular dish! Tender white fish fillets that is so soft it melts in your mouth. It is in a flavorful oil and broth that is refreshing from the fresh jalapenos. It is a savory dish, yet still relatively mild. It commes with napa cabbage as well! This was my favorite dish and I loved the flavor combined with the white rice. - Mapo Tofu (Vegetarian): They have one with pork as well, but I got the vegetarian version. Silky soft tofu cubes in that signature mapo tofu sauce and numbing peppercorns. Despite the appearance of all the dishes, none of them were very spicy. Overall, a comforting soft, spicy, savory dish with a slight tingle. - Eggplant in garlic sauce: A deliciously sweet and umami garlic sauce. The eggplants could have been a bit more cooked through in my opinion though since it was still quite firm. I loved it still! Note that all the dishes to me were not spicy just had an underlying subtle spice or tingle (like a finishing flavor note if you will). Also, since it is sichuan the dishes are on the oilier side. You order with the cashier at the front and pay up front as well. Food comes out quickly. It is a small space with three rows of tables (maybe around 12-15 tables give or take), so it does fill up fast. I went at around 5:40 PM on a Thursday and there was no wait, but by the time we finished eating at around 7PM, the restaurant was full. I think I did everything right. I got there early to avoid the lines. I ordered the jumping fish, mapo w/ pork, and chili oil dumplings just because I love em, but I wasn't blown away by anything. Frequently mentioned as Austin's best Chinese restaurant, this place really didn't live up to the hype. The jumping fish felt flat and mushy; the mapo w pork wasn't even spicy with no hint of real sichuan peppercorn, and honestly tasted more like chili oil than mapo sauce; I know this because the chili oil dumplings we ordered were in the same sauce. Those were just okay and you can get 10x better ones nearby at Julie's Noodles. I did love how nice and attentive everyone was at the restaurant, but that's really the only positive thing I have to say about this very overhyped Sichuan eatery. read more

House of Three Gorges is pumping out real-deal Sichuan cuisine from a shoe box kitchen in a nondescript strip mall. Their vegetarian mapo tofu is a textbox example of doing soft tofu right. Not a cube is broken, swimming in a sea of red oil, fermented black beans buoyed by the undulating waves of sauce. It has just the right amount of spicy, mala flavor, making your lips tingle without being set ablaze. It's got funk, heat, and umami, all in perfect balance. This place has been on my list for a while and came highly recommended. My partner and I saw that Uber Eats was running a promotion with free delivery, so we decided to place an order. My partner got the general tso chicken and I got the combo lo mein. Both were delicious and very large portions! The general tso's did not come with rice, but luckily we had ordered some ($0.99) with the meal, since it was not included in the description. The combo lo mein was very tasty and had a great number of shrimp and pieces of chicken and beef. All in all, happy with this experience! I can across this place with my friend who wanted to try somewhere new, (even though they've been open since 2020). This place was pretty busy, I would either put your name on a waitlist ahead of time or take an order to-go. We waited about 30 mins for a table so it wasn't too bad at all. When you go in, they take you to your table, and you order your food at the front counter and give them your table number. A little different than usual setup, but that's how it goes here. Once you order your food, then they'll bring it out to you along with water and utensils. There is a complimentary bowl of rice with each entree that you order. My friend and I ordered two items total, which was the Salt and Pepper Pork Ribs and Jumping Fish dishes. They were both very delicious and would definitely order this again. The ribs were nice and crispy, great flavor with the onions, wished they cooked down the onions a little bit more but it was still good. I was really looking forward to eating at Three Gorges after reading so many positive reviews. The restaurant was packed, with a waitlist already forming by 6:00 p.m., which only raised my expectations. The wait was reasonable--about 12 minutes. We both ordered the Shrimp Kung Pao, along with pot stickers and egg rolls. Service was friendly, and the food arrived quickly. The egg rolls were excellent, especially with the accompanying sauce. The pot stickers were nicely browned and crispy, though they weren't particularly flavorful. The disappointment came with the Shrimp Kung Pao. The sauce was orange rather than the rich brown I expected, and it was noticeably sweet instead of savory. The red peppers were plentiful and were chopped and blended throughout the dish rather than being left whole, which had to be meticulously removed. The shrimp were also served with the tails still on, making them awkward to eat with a spoon. Ultimately, it was the sauce that made the main dish a letdown for both of us. Oh man what can I add about this place that hasn't already been said? As a vegetarian, I will say this is easiest the best vegetarian mapo tofu that not only you can get in Austin but in the states. I have had other vegetarian mapo tofu both here and in LA (specifically the San Gabriel Valley where there is a large population of Asians) and the flavor of the vegetarian mapo tofu here is easily one of the best. It has the perfect amount of spiciness without being overwhelmingly spicy and I love that the dish wasn't too oily at all. It pairs perfectly with rice - a little spicy, a little tingly, a little umami from black bean paste they use. My husband who eats meat thought it was also delicious as well and didn't even miss the ground pork that mapo tofu traditionally comes in. We also had the dry sautéed green beans which comes in like a dry pepper sauce - the green beans were the perfect texture crunchy on outside but tender on the inside and the seasoning added a lot of flavor. Note this isn't a garlic green bean in's of dish so if you're eating it hoping to get some garlic flavor think again. We also got the eggplant in garlic sauce which was served in what I kind of think as a way more fragrant and garlic heavy teriyaki sauce that isn't overly salty which I loved. Portions are huge! We always are able to make 2-3 meals out of the dishes. Waiting wise, they do have a tablet set up front that you can put yourself on the waitlist if all the tables are full. On a Saturday night at 5:30 PM for table of 2 we waited 10 minutes. You will put your number in on the tablet and they text you when a table is ready. The food here is incredibly flavorful and delicious. I expected it to be a sit down restaurant but it's counter service and if the tables are full then they have a wait. We got there around 6:30 PM on a Friday and were able to get a table right away, but by 7:00 PM there was a wait. We got the jumping fish, garlic eggplant, and mapo tofu. Two entrees would've been plenty for three people but it made for great leftovers. The jumping fish totally surprised me - it was so soft and tasty, and not too spicy. Ugh.. this review really broke my heart. I understand that this is a fan favorite around here, and it shows with the long wait on weekends, but after coming here a few times, I'm just not sure if I can recommend this place. I visited this place a few times. Each time, I ordered different dishes, and my experience was never amazing. Other than the fish dishes, I don't understand what the raves about. Their dry spicy chicken was so dry, it felt like eating pebbles. Their spicy pork wonton tasted sweet; definitely didn't expect that. And some of their other dishes were too sweet. The food is still spicy tho, but it definitely made for a weird combo when eating them together. I think what made it even heartbreaking is that I wanna love this place since I'm looking for an authentic Sichuanese food. It's close and pricing is not bad (portion is just okay tho.. I've had better). Service is okay, not really friendly except for their waiter. The way it works is you get a table (join waitlist if full) and order at the counter. They will bring the food to you. They'll give you rice per entree, but you can ask for more. To go boxes are close to the cashier if you need to bring any home. Like I said above, the place is always packed on the weekend, so try to come early if you don't wanna wait. The tables are closer together, and they don't really have big tables, so it feels more intimate.
