My family and I have always enjoyed this restaurant for years. When ever family or friends come to visit this is our goto place. Food is always awesome, service is always good, chefs are always awesome. The problem I have is they charge an 18% tip charge to your check automatically. They do not come out and tell you this, they just rubber stamp it on the bottom of your receipt. This is almost unreadable unless you know it is there. The lighting is very low so it is close to impossible to notice. We paid an additional 18% not realizing they had already done this. We paid close to an $80 tip!!!! We love this place, but this is like some sort of robbery adding a charge without telling us in person. If you're not doing something underhanded then be honest and up front with your customers. Don't put a faded rubber stamp on the bottom of a receipt in a dimly lit restaurant. Check your receipt people! This is a scam that needs to stop! We are extremely disappointed. Please realize we have absolutely NO complaints with the food or service, we just don't like when an establishment takes total advantage of its customers financially. We stopped in for dinners on the hibachi. The food was wonderful. The chef was great. The waitress not so much. She was either new or just needs more training. We asked him a 2nd round of drinks she said certainly and they never arrived. We also ordered a salad to go, she never ordered it so we went without it. We asked a 3rd time for drink refills but we ended up flagging down a different waitress to get our drinks and bill. We decided to order take out tonight to treat ourselves. We were told 30 min. I manage and work in the restaurant field so I know 30 min could mean 25-40 depending how busy it is. My husband went in to get our order. 30 min went by so I decided to go in and check what was going on with the wait. There was absolutely no wait, and my husband was standing there waiting for the order that got " messed up " okay no problem. Another 15 min goes by and they bring us the wrong order. Then the girls bicker about what the name was , when they know because they cashed us out accordingly. I proceeded to ask if the order is even in the works because after almost 1 hour of waiting, I no longer wanted to wait. The rude hostess proceeded to snap at me telling me they were still bagging it. Food here is amazing, bartender is amazing, server's are never a problem. However, their front end needs a lot of work. We won't be back for take out ever again sadly. Communication is key, don't give the customer an attitude because of your mistake. Especially when we were patient enough to wait almost an extra hour ontop of the given 30 minutes. Do better ladies. read more

Ok this pains me to write after giving such a stellar review the first time but here we go ........ We came here for probably the 4th and last tim.... We started with apps... Edamame pork dumplings and some house salads. The food was decent... The service abysmal... We had some young punk waiter who thought the most important thing was how cool he looked as he swaggered around the restaurant talking to the waitresses... Normally I don't mind if the service isn't immediate but from the time we were seated to the time we got our apps and drinks it was probably a half hour to 45 minutes, This isn't because the place was busy or we had such over burdening orders but because the kid was disappear or hang out with the females. He would routinely walk by us and if we didn't literally loudly call to him he wouldn't give us the time of day. Half way through the meal we were fortunate enough to have a shift change and we had a girl who was very sweet and attentive, this was we thought the end of our problems ...... It wasn't..... We ordered some regular house sushi rolls which were all mediocre, I don't know if the sushi Chef changed or he just didn't care on this evening but the rolls were all done with little attention to detail.... This was ok as the fish was still very fresh so the flavor was decent enough but as the time before we had some legendary rolls so I thought hey why not try for more... It has been common practice for most sushi places for me to get to know the chef and their talent and specialties so being an eater of almost everything that can be thought up at a sushi restaurant I will give the chef license to make whatever he excels at and loves to make. This tactic had always resulted in original and tremendous works of art created by the chef or at the very least make some great rolls that they enjoy making until Asian Bistro. These people took this order of open sushi as a chance to take advantage of us. The rolls cost around 15 dollars a piece which implies you Will get decent fish and something original.. Why else charge more than their house specialty rolls? Typically this price point is well worth it for the glorious rolls that are given out. At Asian bistro they decided to give me Essentially Philadelphia rolls that were slightly modified. This means they used the absolute cheapest ingredients and charged me the absolute highest price they could. I received rolls who's primary ingredients were low grade cooked shrimp... Slightly above supermarket standards... With the secondary ingredients being romaine lettuce in one roll and with banana in another roll. So to clarify I paid 30 dollars for Philadelphia roll with romaine lettuce inside and I mean a large amount of romaine and another Philadelphia roll with the primary ingredient being banana. So cream cheese banana and shrimp tempura. I equate this to essentially a slap in the face from the chef But it only got worse when I spoke to the owner. When I mentioned the poor service from waiter one she essentially told me how dare I call him inattentive because he was going to NYC after his shift. That definitely shouldn't be an issue the consumer has to deal with, I can only assume this was her son as she was so defensive. When I brought up the issue with the sushi rolls she said almost verbatim that it was my fault the sushi chef gave me low end rolls because it was an open order, buyer beware I guess? That'll show me to expect good service from. She essentially says I don't know what I'm talking about and to not blame the guy for the poor service and not to expect good things from the sushi chef. I love this place. My boyfriend and I like to come here before seeing a movie and sit at the bar. We order a couple of things off of the menu and usually share a scorpion bowl. Staff behind the bar is very nice and drinks are strong. Happy hour is during the week from 4-6 and they have some good deals. Food is great my boyfriend raves over the sesame chicken. I have gone to Asian Bistro many times. Every time I have gone, the hibachi has been fantastic. I recommended my friend we go here for his birthday, and it was a very sad experience. The food was wonderful, but the chef barely said any words to us. There was no energy. I called to make a reservation, and added that it was my friends birthday. We were expecting to sing him happy birthday, but the waiter brought us our checks before we even finished our food. This was really not okay. Best Asian food in northern ct by far! I go regularly with my gf and we get the same thing everytime. Avocado salad, spicy crunchy salmon roll, and the sesame chicken to split. Fills us both up for 20-25 bucks. The sesame chicken alone is worth the 5 stars. They are very clean classy and consistent. Sometimes the service can be a bit strange but the food is so freaking good it doesn't matter. That being said the five stars are for sushi only, the hibachi food isn't great (the show definitely is) and the other things they offer are average. I usually get the same rolls every time: salmon and tuna, sometimes the crunchy spicy version, California, and sometimes crab meat. They are all fresh and delicious. My boyfriends gets vegetarian rolls and loves the sweet potato rolls. The avocado rolls are fine as well. Except for water, you also have the choice of complimentary green tea. I had dinner here twice while working away from home in Willimantic. Both times the sushi were super fresh; they did not overload their "fancy" rolls with mayo like I've seen at many other places. I hate that practice because it really takes away the flavors of the fish and makes sushi resemble American-styled fast-food. For dessert, I had the mochi ice cream, which was tasty and fresh as well. Everything was beautifully presented and the wait for food and service wasn't long. The restaurant is huge inside, with lots of seating options and at least 6 hibachi grills (from what I can remember. They may have had more). Whenever i get sushi from here i'm continuously grateful to have excellent quality and service. I order something from here on average once a week or so, some weeks i get it more than once.....it's that good. They have some really tasty maki worth bragging about: sweet potato tempura, shrimp tempura, avocado-peanut, yellow tail, mmm salmon avocado is my favorite. Their signature "dragon" and "Sunny girl" rolls are almost to die for. Dining in? You have the choice of hibachi seating, and regular restaurant seating. Hibachi is always entertaining, pretty standard hibachi show there. I recently took my mother out for her birthday, we sat in the back dining room, the sushi chef actually made her a special raw role (some tasty mystery fish) and didn't charge us!.......birthdays celebrated on the hibachi side have their own special treat, that i really can't spoil the surprise.......(so if you go with a group of friends make sure you tell the wait staff it's someone's birthday, even if it isn't, pick the friend you think will be able to play along best, and then just sit back and enjoy) I like hibachi filet mignon & shrimp, and when i don't feel like meat hibachi- vegetables are just as delicious. Again, pretty standard hibachi selections. I haven't had a whole lot from the entree menu. However, beef negimaki is AMAZING! It also comes in appetizer size if you want to get other stuff and don't want to be overwhelmed with food. I went to UConn and my friends and I LOVED coming to the Asian Bistro for sushi and hibachi! Was definitely our go-to Chinese/sushi restaurant in the area... so delicious! We most often went to Asian Bistro for the hibachi, either sitting at a hibachi table or ordering it at a regular table. The majority of the chefs we've had have been exceptional and our food is always delectable (we've ordered the gamut as far as hibachi choices go). Unlike many other Japanese steak houses, you have the choice of soup or salad with your hibachi and fried rice comes standard.. I'm sure you can ask for noodles but the rice is fantastic, so I've always stuck with that. As others have said, it was surprising to find such fresh and delicious sushi in the rural areas surrounding UConn. Their regulars (spicy crunchy tuna, salmon avocado, etc.) never disappoint while we've also had some excellent specialty rolls. We enjoy sitting in the back room for a combination of the funky décor and watching the sushi chefs craft the different rolls. Asian Bistro has a unique, quirky interior style that I find charming. In the regular seating area, the style is a mix of traditional Asian interiors with seafaring objects. In the hibachi area, there are some interesting style points that complement their modern design scheme, such as a giant yellow M&M sitting in a recliner on their shelf. The back room has a large, faux-oak tree in the middle of the room complete with leaves that nicely accents the sushi bar. All in all, I appreciate the slightly eccentric interior décor and believe the excellent meal that Asian Bistro serves is well worth a bit of quirkiness. If you are in the surrounding area of UConn and are in the mood for some good hibachi or sushi, definitely try out Asian Bistro in the Eastbrook Mall! I've never been overly impressed by the Asian Bistro, the food's not a miracle in my mouth but I've never really had a reason to spit it out before today. I caught a flick at the cinema across the way and decided to stop in for a late lunch at the Asian Bistro. I ordered the Pad Thai, Tom Yam Seafood Hot and Sour soup, and an iced tea. I've never ordered any beverage apart from water at the Bistro before but the iced tea was sickeningly sweet, like something you'd get at McD's, bleh. The pad thai came with a miso soup or salad, I opted for the salad, and received and ugly looking bowl of FROZEN lettuce and tomatoes with a glob of the Asian ginger dressing on top. My teeth thoroughly chilled i picked at the salad until my soup came. The tom yam soup here is something that I've really enjoyed in the past, but today it came out looking a hot mess, and tasting a bit off too, the taste was off and it just wasn't very good. And my pad thai... oh that pad thai... I don't know if I've had a great many pad thai dishes before but the smell isn't meant to be reminiscent of vomit, the noodles were slimy and the appearance was less than impressive, looking like a ugly brown mound atop my plate. The hostess didn't even stop her phone call when she sat me and the waitress, well, she didn't do anything wrong... but that doesn't mean it was stellar either, the staff were having some kind of yelling match in Chinese that came off as very unprofessional. I tend to judge a restaurant extremely harshly on their lunch service because as a slower time of day it's when you really see how much they care about service and quality...
