Y'all the hype is real. This is the OG Vietnam Cafe in KC and it has been on my radar for years. Nestled in Columbus Park, it has a real neighborhood vibe, and it doesn't look like anything special from the outside. First of all I was wrong about that because this place is special. The first think you'll notice are the nicest, friendliest people on the planet are working here. They are knowledgeable and are so glad you're there to experience authentic Vietnamese cuisine. I ordered a bun dish that is amongst my favorites and it came out just as good, if not better, than the best ones I had when I lived in Seattle. My friend had a Vietnamese coffee that she adored in addition to her lunch, and it was all delightful. Despite them being busy we weren't rushed, and when we paid and left the people working the cashier were just so kind, I honestly can't overstate how nice everyone was. I'm already thinking about my next visit - I do think this is currently the best Vietnamese I've had in KC.

Food was great! Everything is pretty authentic for Vietnamese cuisine and the service is pretty friendly. The atmosphere of the restaurant has a homely and relaxed family-friendly vibe to it as well. I've tried the bun bo hue and bun thit nướng chả giò last time, and they were both delicious. This time, I tried the mi xao gion and hu tiếu. Both were good as well. Prices of the foods were fair as well.

Can't speak to their other food but they have the best pho in town of the many I've tried. It's so flavorful and it hits everytime. Me and my fiancé come almost weekly because we can't stay away

I don't have a chance to eat Vietnamese very often, so I have to admit that I'm never quite sure what to order. We came to celebrate a friend's new job and came for lunch on a weekday. The restaurant was definitely bustling with other people on their lunch break, but there is plenty of seating and we didn't wait long at all. The menu has so many options, and I decided to try the spring rolls and the chicken curry. The spring rolls were nice and light with a peanut sauce for dipping. It was a very nice appetizer that didn't leave me too full for my meal. The curry was good, a little spicy which I like, but aside from the spice I thought it could use just a bit more flavor. The chicken was well cooked though, as was the rice and it was a nice warm meal on a cold day. Would definitely want to go back and try some other items.

This was a highly recommended food location - and it lived up to the hype. It's your classic super simple but excellent food location. I managed to come when it wasn't super busy so I was seated right away. The restaurant itself is low frills, focusing all of their attention on the food itself. You also get served very quickly - and once my order was placed, my food came out only a few minutes after. There was pretty easy to get street parking in the area. You also pay at the cash register. The food itself was incredible: the broth was extremely rich and had a subtle sweetness to it. Nothing felt super heavy or overwhelming - and the portions plentiful, especially for how low cost the pho is. The noodles were very tender and the beef a perfect texture. The BBQ pork spring rolls and peanut sauce were also excellent. I'd highly recommend to anyone in the area!

Some of the best Vietnamese food I have had besides my time in Vietnam. Portions are plentiful, staff is friendly and efficient, and food is excellent! Vietnam Cafe is always crowded and for good reason. It is a "can't miss" spot in Kansas City!

The Vietnam Cafe experience is a well oiled machine. You come in sit down, your server gives you 5-10 minutes before taking your order. Your food comes out no longer than 10minutes after ordering. You pay up at the counter and go about your day. Some may not love the simplicity of it but they know what they're doing and they're good at it. The pho is delicious, the broth is rich with flavor and they leave you with lots of add ons on the table for you to spruce up the pho with your flavors of preference. The rolls were also so dang good, it's hard to beat a crunchy crispy delicious egg roll. This place is casual and quick, and that warm delicious goodness will have you coming back for a truly great meal at an exceptional price.

Thank you to yelpers who gave great recommendation and urge those who haven't ventured here to give this place a try! I am visiting Olathe KS for 7 nights during this Labor Day week. Was hoping I'd have chance to see my boyfriend Matt Dz.....z to give him moral support in his difficult time. But though we haven't been connecting I find KS and MO very pretty historic and friendly cities. I love it here! Some areas are more diverse than others and I feel that where this cafe is located, it is a gem in the local Asian community apparently strong here. Atmosphere here is pretty Asian, long line, they seat parties based on what seating is available. Maybe one of the pros of being alone just for this instance I got seated right away! People are quick on their feet taking orders, moving chairs around. Smells good in here! There are TV monitors showing anime. Very unassuming bare walls with minimal decor. They're letting the food speak for what they're known for. Being 1/3 Vietnamese, of course I come to try KS BBQ which my boyfriend loves but I also crave Vietnamese food! I ordered Bun Bo Hue, they make it authentic here with pork blood. The broth was rich but was slightly on sweet side so I made it perfect by adding mam ruoc (shrimp paste). Everything expected was in the Bun bo hue like the cha lua (pork roll). One tiny thing I was looking for was the pig knuckle that normally comes with this dish. It was missing today :-( Still overall definitely 5 stars for food! I also ordered Banh Xeo to go for dinner!

My favorite pho place in KC!! I always have to stop here when I visit. The owners are very nice and the service is great. Food is amazing and they give good portions. Got the pho day biet and cafe sua da. The che was great too! Would like to stop by again to try their other dishes.

I came here because this place was one of the highest rated restaurants close to the downtown KC area. But oh my god, how the heck did this get the high rating it has? Maybe they were better in the past, but all the food was just so sweet. I absolutely hate wasting food. But I left this food behind because I genuinely found it just inedible. My parents felt the same way, they had a few bites and just couldn't stomach it. Service also wasn't great. We waited for about 5 minutes to be seated (party of 3) when they only had like 3 other tables to wait on. And even then, we felt like we were forgotten because we had to flag one of the employees down after 20 minutes of waiting for someone to take our order. We should have just walked away at this point... that's a huge red flag. Bad service, mid atmosphere, horrendous food. Skip this place. IF it was good before, it definitely is not anymore. Coming from an Asian person who knows what good pho is.

Pretty good pho with decent portion sizes. Egg rolls weren't great, though. I like they also have some chè desserts (paid for separately at the counter).

Missing utensils.... I'm not from here nor I could get any utensils....

Not sure if I chose the wrong day to order or the cooks was swamped. First off Utensils. I've requested it and of course they didn't give any. I was there for a business meeting and its just not convenient to hunt down forks or chopsticks to eat your food. It should be in there automatically! Ordered the Porkchop combo with their shredded crab, eggs, and meatloaf. Missing the meatloaf...and the "porkchop(s)" seemed so beat up and unevenly seared that it was just unappetizing to look at. one sided was somewhat grilled and the other side was pale white. The Shredded pork floss... was on the side which was soggy? I don't even know what made it that but i felt like it wasn't fresh. Overall this dish was a disappointment. The Pho on the other hand was decent. Portion was fair but cutting up a meatball into 4 pieces is what i call cutting corners. Vietnamese food use to be a stable of affordability. It use to be good cheap eats with great portions. Due to how trending foods are and hiked prices. You're definitely not getting your bang for your buck. Even so if I am paying premium prices or "standard" I should get a fair quality. Overall, the chef didn't pay attention to details in the order and just half assed it. I wished I got a better experience vs how others have praised upon this place.

The restaurant was very nice--tastefully decorated with authentic touches that felt intentional and refined. The large canvas artwork added character without overwhelming the space. It struck a perfect balance: elegant but comfortable. The staff was attentive, welcoming, and knowledgeable about the menu. They were patient and accommodating, especially with our little one, which always makes a difference when dining out with family. We started with the sampler platter, which included fresh spring rolls, crispy spring rolls, and a variety of other traditional bites. Everything was prepared well--the fresh rolls were vibrant and clean tasting, while the crispy rolls had a satisfying crunch without being greasy. For entrées, my wife ordered the Vietnamese pork chop with the perfectly runny egg over broken rice. The pork was well-seasoned and cooked just right, and that egg brought everything together beautifully. I ordered the Bánh Mì and a bowl of pho. The pho had the perfect level of spice--balanced, aromatic, and comforting. The broth had depth, and you could tell it was crafted with care. The Bánh Mì was equally impressive; the baguette was toasted just right--crispy on the outside, soft on the inside--holding all the flavors together without overpowering them. What truly stands out is that Broken Rice delivers this level of quality without being overly expensive. It's a great value for authentic, well-executed Vietnamese cuisine. And most importantly--our niece enjoyed herself too, which says a lot. I would absolutely recommend Broken Rice to anyone looking for a satisfying, authentic dining experience in a warm and welcoming atmosphere

We did enjoy the shrimp, spring rolls, but were slightly disappointed that the peanut sauce was very watery. The menu had a good variety, but most of the dishes involved pork, very few involved chicken. Tofu dishes were also an option. The main reason for the low review would be the cleanliness of the restaurant. On the table were a variety of spices and sauces in various containers, but they didn't look like they had been cleaned or changed in several uses, so we did not use or investigate to know exactly what things were.
