We had chicken and beef pad Thai and Gyoza - this place never disappoints! We've tried a few other dishes, but pad Thai is my favorite. It's the first place, since moving from Southern California, that I've had that has the best flavor; authentic Asian cuisine! The service is quick and they're always kind. I really tried to like this place because I love to support small family owned businesses. The first time I ordered here I was told 45 minutes for one order of stir fried cashew nut chicken. I told the owner I could not wait that long. He said his family went home because they were slow.... But now he is super busy but would do it in 20 min. He also warned me that it was spicy....what i got had no sauce at all on it. He must have tried to rush by boiling instead of stir fry because the chicken was white. completely flavorless. I have had takeout from here twice, so far 2 for 2! Have sampled the fried spring rolls- perfectly crisp, yummy chicken satay, pad Thai, red curry, tempura appetizer, steamed veggies and Thai beef salad. I am not a big fan of fried food but I have to say the tempura appetizer was some of the best I have ever had, fresh made to order. I deducted 1 star from the 5 star food for speed of service, during the day only 1 person is working and everything is made to order so give yourself 20-30 mins lead time for your order. So I got three items, an appetizer (shrimp rolls, or "shrimp in blanket", entree (pork pad Thai), and a drink (Vietnamese coffee), which came to around $25, without tip. I think what I found most disappointing was that it was rather mediocre and pricey for their quantity/proportions. The flavor a bit bland for the shrimp rolls, however the sweet and sour dipping sauce made it better. The pad Thai tasted like generic pad Thai (sweet/tangy from the lime). The Vietnamese coffee was the saddest part of my meal. For those who has never tried, Vietnamese coffee has a very distinct rich, taste. It's thick and sweetened with condensed milk. The coffee I had was diluted with water, and was definitely a powder concoction of some form of coffee, definitely not Vietnamese coffee though. The restaurant is named "Asian Essence", so they tried to have various dishes of different Asian countries however, it was primarily Thai food. On a positive note, I came in for take out and they finished cooking everything within 10 minutes. The only reason why I came in was because its conveniently 2 miles away from where I live. read more

We have been going to Asian Essence for more than 10 Years. The food has always been wonderful. The owner knows me by my last name and recognizes me when I come in. I went in today on New Year's Eve to pick up an order. When I went to pay, I tipped him $20 Cash and gave him my debit card for the order. The Owner went off on me as to how when a debit or credit card is used, he has to wait five days to get his money. Well, that is not my problem. My Debit card deducts from my Account automatically & immediately. He kept saying it again and once again. I almost left him his food and the damn $20 tip that he didn't deserve following his performance. I just recommended a friend go there today. I will never, ever return there again and I think the Owner should put in a damn ATM and make it cash only or put up a CASH ONLY SIGN. So sorry you lost a loyal customer. As far as "American Asian Quisine" (as my Chinese friend refers to it) goes this place is great. The food is consistently fresh and delicious, not too heavy, and certainly the best in the area. I often find myself getting take out on my way home from work. A few of my favorites include the spring rolls, edamame, chicken wings (big and fantastic!) and pad thai. What a disappointment. As a visitor to Plymouth, I was expecting something wonderful to eat here based on previous reviews. Instead what I received was nothing more than bland, freezer-shelf worthy pseudo-Thai. First, let me mention I was the ONLY person in this diner for the duration of my meal. One guy stopped in to pick up a to-go order, but that was all the traffic I saw on a 1:30pm stop on a beautiful Thursday afternoon. Now for my points of contention: A. The curb appeal is near zero. This place is located in a tiny strip mall as equally bland as the food the diner serves, with hardly any "pop" to the signage or big windows, which ought to be really promoted but instead are covered up from the inside by cheap coffeehouse curtains (yes: with coffee cups on them and grandma-style printed filigree) and two old and obnoxious window A/C units that are very obviously permanent fixtures, even though the guy running the place claimed his air conditioning simply "wasn't working" that day. Riiiight... B. It shouldn't take 20+ minutes to receive a simple order of Pad Thai and spring rolls (of the uncooked variety), especially if you're making food for a single patron. I can make Pad Thai at home in 30 minutes from scratch -- nothing prepped, no preheated stove top -- so I expect an operating eatery to provide that same meal in at least half the time it would take for me to do it. C. If it DOES take 20+ minutes to make this food, it ought to taste awesome and be presented in an equally acceptable manner. A flimsy plastic to-go container (Note: I ordered my food as dine-in), paper plates, plastic cups, and plastic utensils are not my idea of proper food presentation. The only thing that should have been plastic was the straw for my (unimpressive) Thai Tea. Disposable utensils and dinnerware are more a way of telling dine-in customers "Go away" in the most passive-aggressive manner possible, rather than being an invitation to be uber-casual and "Please, return again!" Not that this place needed plates to say "Go away." The food said it quite clearly enough. D. Beverage: Thai Tea. At home, pre-made Thai Tea from a container is perfectly fine. At a restaurant, it should be freshly brewed and poured so the elements remain separated: the white cream on top fading gradually into the dark, almost black tea at the bottom of the glass. At this diner, not only did my tea arrive in a plastic cup (with a lid on! Can you say "Go away" again?) but came uniformly colored and with that "poured out of a box" sort of taste. Granted it may have been brewed in the kitchen, but for all intents and purposes, a patron wouldn't be able to tell the difference. E. Appetizer: (Uncooked) Spring Rolls. First, they should not be fully vegetarian unless that is specified on the menu. A shrimp or two or a few pieces of chicken or pork should be wrapped in with rice noodles, bean sprouts, slivered carrot, fresh basil, lettuce, and maybe some thinly sliced onion. Second, the lettuce should be luscious strands or feathers of green leaf, not bland shreds of iceberg. Third, the dipping sauce should (preferably) be a creamy peanut sauce, but if that isn't possible a fish sauce-based ginger dip with a couple slivers of Thai chilies marinating in there for a kick of spice. What did I get? Something that tasted and looked like white vinegar mixed with sugar. F. Meal: (Chicken) Pad Thai. A classic Thai comfort food, Pad Thai should be salty and savory and just a little sweet, the firm, long, WIDE rice noodles mixed with pieces of boiled chicken should be smothered in a creamy peanut sauce, dotted with hints of fresh cilantro and/or green onion, sprinkled with sesame seeds and topped with a sprig of mint (or basil) with a wedge of lime on the side as a finishing touch. Asian Essence's version was almost none of this. It was a mass of broken rice noodles barely flavored with some kind of vinegar-y and thin sauce. (Maybe they just poured on the spring roll dipping sauce and added a few crumbles of peanut to make it "different"?) After everything, what did Asian Essence get right with this meal? The lime wedge. To top off the trip, this wonderful (insert sarcasm here) experience cost me a whopping $22. I could have gone across the street to the British Beer Company and had a burger and fries (with beer!) for about the same price. And they would have served it on real plates. read more

I can't agree more with the prior review. My husband and I take out from this restaurant a lot. The food is consistently very good, if you ask for spicy they will do it to your taste. I've been to this place a few times already, and it never disappoints me. Located in Plymouth it is just a small Thai Restaurant that does mostly take-outs. I've had their Pad Thai, Pad Kee Mao, Pineapple Fried Rice, and appetizers like Spring Rolls and Crab Rangoon. The foods are always freshly made (they make to order). The entrees are always cooked nicely -- the texture and the taste of the entrees are just the right combination. From the counter you can see their kitchen, and their kitchen is SUPER clean!!! In addition, the owners of the restaurant are very friendly and always provide wonderful service. When I visited Asian Essence today the owners said they will soon start doing delivery in addition to take out, then it will be more convenient for the people living around the area. This is my first review on Yelp, my motivation to write this review is that every time I visit the restaurant it's often quiet (just because it locates at a quiet tiny plaza), and I feel I need to let more people know about this hidden pearl in Plymouth. :D read more

The pad thai was a little better but there are better versions around at other restaurants. Extremely disappointed. My wife and I ate here bc of the great reviews on yelp. The food was void of flavor, Thai chicken noodle soup & Ginger Delight. Our guess is that an imposter hijacked the kitchen. The plastic cutlery was very unaccommodating and no chop stix were made available. There were no sauces let alone the std salt & pepper, at the table. Another guest asked for a side of sauce and was charged extra. For the money, go elsewhere. read more

I highly recommend their curry and lad nar. Scallion pancakes are also really nice. Like some reviews have mentioned, this place is very much a "to-go" restaurant, and not ideal for sit down dining. Since Asian Essence has opened my family has loved it! The first time we got take out, I actually called them to say how amazing the food was. It's always fresh, never greasy and full of flavor. Some of the entrees are a bit pricey but we are happy to pay for the quality versus quantity of some other places that aren't as good for sure! Their crab rangoons, pork dumplings, spring rolls, chicken katsu and wings are some of the best I've ever tasted and that's just the apps! Their rice, Pad thai, beef and broccoli, Lad Nar, etc. etc. are so delicious. When you eat cold left over pad thai with your fingers out of the fridge, you know it's good! The last couple times we got take out, some of the noodles were a bit burnt so hopefully the new cook has gotten that in control cause it's too good to burn!
