When my husband and I became pregnant with our first child, I was still carrying a deep grief. My mother had passed away just one year earlier, and as a 38-year-old first-time mom, I felt lost without her guidance. I remember sharing that with Chavah early in my pregnancy, and from that moment on, she cared for me with a level of compassion and sensitivity that I will never forget. Before I even chose a midwife, I prayed for guidance. Then I opened Yelp, and Chavah was the very first midwife I called. After speaking with her on the phone, I didn't search any further. Looking back now, five months postpartum, I truly know she was an answer to my prayer. Chavah cared for us from the very beginning of my pregnancy--around three months along--through birth and into those precious first weeks postpartum. Throughout every appointment, she was wise, kind, patient, and incredibly knowledgeable. She took the time to educate us, answer our endless first-time-parent questions, and guide us through each stage with confidence and reassurance. One thing that especially touched us was her willingness to go above and beyond when life threw us an unexpected curveball. Midway through my pregnancy, my husband and I had to relocate, moving about 70 miles away. Most people would have understandably referred us elsewhere, but Chavah generously agreed to keep us on as clients. We were so grateful. Those extra miles meant more to us than she probably realizes. Our pregnancy was healthy and uncomplicated. The only bump in the road was that I needed an iron boost, and Chavah quickly connected us with excellent care for a couple of iron transfusions. Her experience and attentiveness gave us complete confidence that we were in good hands every step of the way. When it came time to give birth, Chavah was absolutely amazing. She created an environment where I felt informed, supported, and in control. Well... as much control as a woman can feel while temporarily visiting another dimension during contractions. Thankfully, our son had places to be and arrived after just five hours of active labor, making his debut before lunchtime. Today, we are five months postpartum and have a healthy, thriving baby boy. I've intentionally taken my time writing this review because I wanted to reflect carefully on our experience and express just how grateful we are. Chavah brought wisdom when I needed guidance, encouragement when I felt uncertain, and compassion when I was grieving. She cared for not only my physical health, but my emotional well-being too. I honestly cannot imagine a better midwife experience. If we are blessed with more children in the future, I would choose Chavah again without hesitation. Let me start by saying that Chavah is one of the kindest souls I've ever met! When we first found out we were pregnant, Chavah was referred to us by a dear friend who used her for her home birth, and was so thrilled with her birth experience. Unfortunately that pregnancy ended in a miscarriage, but even though we hadn't formally signed paperwork or "hired" Chavah she still so graciously walked us through the most difficult and painful experience of our life (and I might add that was without even meeting us or receiving a dime from us.) When we were blessed with our rainbow baby, we were not sure we wanted a home birth due to the previous miscarriage anxiety was obviously high. So we started care with a different provider, whom we did not end up being happy with. We switched care to Chavah and that was the absolute best decision we ever made! She honestly saved my pregnancy and allowed me to have the best outcome at my birth. Chavah caught many things the previous provider missed, like low iron and border line GD. She helped educate me to manage the GD with diet and finger pricking and she also helped me raise my iron levels. The educational component that Chavah provides is unlike any other we received and we took many many classes. She is patient, answers all your questions and believe me I have a lot of them, and she just has a way of teaching that makes it enjoyable and easy to remember. When it came time to the birth we were hoping for a home birth, but knew with some of my aliments that a hospital transfer was highly likely. We did decided to transfer to the hospital early in my labor by choice not out of necessity because that just made the most sense for my case. I was in labor at the hospital for almost two days and Chavah was right by my side almost the entire time. She just went home once to get some rest when my Doula came and she knew I had the care I needed. Chavah was soooooo pivotal in my birth, as she saved me from a C-section by petitioned the doctor to allow me more time to dilate. She really impressed me as she stated facts to the doctor showing the doctor that both baby and I were doing perfectly fine and another hour was exactly what my body needed. She also ensured that I got the delayed cord clamping I wanted, even when the doctor tried multiple times to cut it early. Chavah literally held the placenta so that my baby could receive all his blood. Her postpartum care has been just as amazing as all her other care. The amount of times I have called Chavah crying and she has helped me through my struggles as a new mom are countless. She is so encouraging and supportive which is exactly what you need in this fragile postpartum state! Her support through the challenging breastfeeding experience is what has kept me going. And this week alone, she came over and we had a fun baby wearing class! Chavah's heart is so pure and her desire to help not only mamas but families was made so evident to us through our experience with her. When it comes time for out next baby, she will absolutely have to be part of our birth team! My prior two births were done at a hospital, first through a c-section and the second a VBAC. Having Chavah as my midwife was a dream!! Every aspect of my care from beginning to end was excellent. For my second pregnancy, I wanted a private midwife and hoped for a home birth. My husband and I are so grateful for a Chavah's support. We chose Chavah as our midwife for a few reasons, one big one being the fact that she does in home prenatal visits. She was so accommodating to my husbands work schedule and it was so special to get to know each other in our home. We also loved that she is a hands on midwife and willing to provide physical and emotional support as much as possible while also being our midwife. She even spent time teaching my husband a few techniques to use during pregnancy and labor. These were the selling points for us, but we got so much more throughout our time together. Chavah was a wonderful coach and friend through my entire pregnancy and helped me voice my fears and normalized them. When my home birth expectations didn't happen, Chavah came with me to the hospital and was a shoulder to cry on through my disappointment. She supported me through my birth to be the best it could given the situation. She talked me through all my options while my mind was spinning and gave me an amazing massage during labor. She even took photos and videos that I will cherish forever. If you are looking for a midwife or doula, Chavah is an excellent choice! Husbands review - There are so many things that I did not know about birth before we hired chavah as our doula/midwife. She thoroughly helped me understand the aspects of the birth process and helped me understand my "role" throughout this entire ordeal. Obviously I was becoming a father, but I wasn't ready to become a "mini doula" as what would have happened if we didn't have chavah by our side. But we did and throughout the entire birth, she filled me on bits and pieces of information that ultimately gave me the confidence to be as helpful as I can be given the circumstances that my wife and I went through. Her guidance was definitely without a doubt worth it for how much she is charging for her services. Not only that but she also triples as a "rogue photographer" when things are getting hard and you need those moments to be captured for when the birth is over and you've had a chance to reflect on whatever you found yourself in. From Emily (mama): While having a child is one of the most joy-filled and amazing adventures, it can also be coupled with paralyzing doubt and fear, especially for first time parents like us. At every turn, Chavah dispelled our fears with ease and wisdom; backed by her 25+ years of experience and the confidence & knowledge that comes with that. She embodies what I would have dreamed up as the best midwife/doula for us. And she's got a great sense of humor, to boot! I wanted to have a home birth, but that wasn't possible due to our remote location. Turns out, I got the best of both worlds. I was nervous to have our baby in the hospital, but as we grew to know Chavah, those fears faded into excitement and even peace. With her prolific midwifery experience and creative communication skills, Chavah was a coach that helped us attain a natural/physiologic birth experience with modern OB care at our local provider, then a hospital birth out of town. She expertly navigated some murky waters regarding certain hospital protocols that didn't correlate with our birth plan, while remaining respectful and kind. She worked with the hospital staff, and not against them. The atmosphere in the delivery room was full of joy and excitement. I credit that to God filling it with His Holy Spirit, and for bringing us Chavah. Chavah is a hands-on doula, to say the least. She massaged me for hours while I was in labor. Her hands truly have a healing touch. She coached me through each contraction, helping me to breath into it rather than resist which helped immensely. I've had the pleasure of having Chavah as my doula for my second baby and as my midwife for my third. She is very knowledgeable and skilled but she is also so good at checking on how mom is doing emotionally throughout the pregnancy. She was such a comfort and confidante for me this pregnancy. Her support as a friend and care provider were invaluable. I really appreciate that she brings so much information to the table when discussing different things surrounding labor- pros and cons to actively manage a postpartum hemorrhage, antibiotics and probiotics, etc. she also is such a great source for navigating different symptoms and how to best combat them with supplements and diet. chavah looks at the pregnancy holistically. She's also not afraid to refer you to a specialist if there's anything that comes up - she knows her limitations and is humble enough to acknowledge them. This doesn't mean she's quick to deem you as high risk, she sincerely wants the best for you and your baby- Ideally that is a home birth with her as your midwife- but Chavah lives in reality, not ideals. She is incredibly uplifting, optimistic, and encouraging and just the most supportive midwife. She's a midwife because she genuinely loves and cares for women. If you're considering her as your doula, she helped me have an unmedicated birth with my second baby and I was induced. I couldn't have done it without her. As soon as she arrived, she gently but firmly - I don't know how she is both- gave me instructions to help me relax and ride my contractions better. It prepared me so well for my third at home. It was like all the things she said to me before played in my mind and of course she helped me find different positions to help me rest and find relief. If you're on the fence, just hire her. Also, use her insurance gal- she's also great. Chavah is amazing and surrounds herself with amazing people. The assisting midwife was also such a blessing and a great addition to the care team. It's hard to express how grateful we are that we choose to use Chavah. As new parents you will find that everyone has their own opinion good, bad, false, self promoting, not helpful, "the easy not natural way", fearful, misguiding, anxiety inducing, and down right terrible. Chavah has been through over 1000 births and the experience and wisdom that comes from this is unmatched. Every time a problem would arise immediately Chavah was available to suggest what it was and what the solution is. Every single time she was correct . It's rare that someone gets things right 100% of the time, but she manages to. Her way of working is calm and direct, which is exactly what you want when going into labor. Through the whole process she was measured, professional and polite to push for the birth you planned for. Postpartum we paid for extra visits. Chavah was worth every penny we spent! From the moment we had our first meeting Chavah was nothing but positive, professional, down to earth, and exactly what I knew I wanted in a doula. She is a wealth of information which made so many deicsion as a first time mom so much easier because I knew I had someone who would give me the facts and an unbiased stand point. Chavah is the best! I found Ms. Chavah on the Pasadena mommy group. She was one of the midwives that was listed. After doing some research, a bunch of emails exchanges and finally decided to move forward. I had a birth center in mind but that turn sour and I decided to trust Chavah. I wanted to give home birth a try because my other birth experiences at the hospital was tiring. Chavah is very knowledgeable and tells you everything that is going to happen. She encourage me to take certain vitamins, drink water daily, what to eat, walks and etc. The day/night of my home birth was amazing! The energy and atmosphere went to plan and in the comfort of my own home without a hospital nurse popping in every 15 minutes or so. Her assistant Sarah was amazing too! Chavah is a wonderful and supportive doula. She is extremely knowledgeable and is very good at explaining things especially to a first-time mom like myself. She not only helped me with questions and concerns about birth, but also about motherhood. In the last few weeks of my pregnancy, I was told my baby was breech and I would most likely need a c-section, I was extremely upset about this and Chavah helped me through all of the emotions and made sure I knew all of my options.
