The ambience and food were fantastic! From the outside the place looks like a regular restaurant, but upon entry I felt like I was in a big city. I was here with a large group to celebrate my friend's birthday. Service was excellent! I didn't want to go with a traditional dish like the Pad Thai, so I opted for the Massaman Curry (spelled Mussuman on their menu) and it was a delight. It was just the right amount of spice and sweetness. Free tip: The portions are huge so you may consider sharing. I ended the evening with a hot tea by Shangri La and it was just right. Asparagus was referred to me by several people as the best Asian food around, so my expectations were high. My husband and I got 6 apps and thought we'd bring home any leftovers. We got the Seafood Roll, the Ahi Tuna, Fish Cakes, Lemon Grass Beef, Calamari, and Lamb Chops. The beef and lamb were out of this world, tender, juicy and full of that grill flavor. The seafood roll was good as well as the Ahi Tuna. The presentation of the Ahi Tuna was beautiful but there was a bit too much sauce, but all good. The fish cake had a good flavor but the texture was very mushy. If I had a piece of French bread to spread it on it would have been delicious, just very mushy like a dip and couldn't hold its shape. The calamari was not good at all. I love tempura batter and all the glorious crunch and this was a dark batter and zero crisp and crunch. I would assume the oil was not hot enough and the it was cooked to long. The calamari was also a bit rubbery. We should have sent it back but I hate being "that person". My husband got craft beer in cans. I got the white sangria and it was delicious! I also got a ginger pear martini. The server was very nice and pleasant. The ambiance in the main dining room felt less upscale than the bar, so next time will ask to sit there. I am looking forward to trying it out again but will ask for recommendations first. I contemplated giving it 3 stars because the calamari was so bad, but the beef and lamb were so good that I am going to have them the benefit of the doubt! Really nice place. A great alternative to chain city that resides all along the US 30 corridor. This place is just a mile or so off the I65 exit. Had the Asparagus Fried Rice for lunch. We have been going to either Asparagus or Siam Marna for at least 25 years and last night at Asparagus was the last time. I read all the reviews about the food ie: overcooked food, way smaller portions and way higher prices. It was my mom's birthday and she wanted Thai food. Worst tap water ever...not even filtered....just out of a sink in the bathroom I'm sure. Then, there were 3 of us and we got a few appetizers to share....Vietnamese spring roll....1 roll for $12...I have never been to a Thai/Vietnamese restaurant that puts only 1 poorly filled roll on a plate, hacked up like a 5 year old tried to cut it and charges $12 for it. We also got the mango salad that was pretty good until we got to the overcooked chewy shrimp....plated again by the same 5 year old I think. Duo Cargo...was one of the reasons my mom picked here for her birthday...escargot and shrimp were overcooked and hard....I think for $18 for 3 of them was ridiculous for what they tasted like. Baked oysters were the best of the appetizers. Entree time next....I didn't order an entree just in case there was a pattern going on. My mom got the $47 whole red snapper. She had to finally tell Kevin it was way overcooked and he took it off the bill. Thanks Kevin. Uuugh...such a long way from the Siam Marina in Calumet City...my Asian pear martini tasted like pineapple. Someone wasted one of our seafood egg rolls so they brought out a beef egg roll as a replacement and thought we wouldn't notice the difference. Our entree was very salty. We ordered a dish to go-that was too difficult for them to process I guess so that was a last minute addition we had to wait for. Dined here with a party of about 18 in celebrating a birthday right before the New Year. The service, the food, and the ambiance are pristine. No complaints whatsoever. We all ordered something different on the menu and I can truly say that I've never been somewhere where ev-ver-rything on the menu is amazing. I have visited before with my wife as a nice change of pace when going out for special occasions on my most recent visit however it was very disappointing we ordered two appetizers one of which was the satay platter everything on the platter aside from the scallops was over cooked. when we got to the entrees the both of which had seafood shrimp scallops lobster and sea bass the shrimp were rubbery as was the lobster again over cooked. the food is seemingly a thai Indian fusion which should be so delightful and though the seasoning was done very well and the flavors were wonderful the preparation of the dishes fell short especially for the price you pay in our case around 200$ for the two of us. the service however was what the worst taste in my mouth as I was unable to finish my meal do to the fact that in our nearly one hour visit aside from taking our order and dropping off the food we never saw our server Maddie. several staff members whom were bussing tables also passed by our empty drinks multiple times. We've been good customers here for years and years and always enjoyed the food and atmosphere, but lately the things have been lacking. The food used to be really fresh tasting and great but we were in a few months back and it was the absolute last time for us. Me and my sister both got horrible food poisoning from the beef lovers bowl. It was the only thing we had in common eating and we both agreed something tasted off. Within a few hours we were so deathly ill, in horrible pain, and almost hospitalized. For 3 days we suffered with identical symptoms. I called to let them know and they were apologetic and asked if we wanted a replacement meal but I declined because we're not going back. It's sad because we really enjoyed this place the service was great and Courtney is the best waitress ever. If you read this we miss you. But please reconsider eating here. The food was great and the staff were nice. It was my first time here so having the staff explain the menu was pretty helpful. Basil Fried Rice - I can't lie, it's good but I always say "easy on the basil". Desserts are to die for, if you're not too full because of the giant portions, definitely take a look. As far as appetizers go Asparagus dominates in taste and showmanship. I really like how they take the time to add some elegance to the plate. So, i was really disappointed with Asparagus this time around. And since you know it's my go-to restaurant, it hurts to have to say negative things about this place. No one in my household felt like cooking yesterday, nor did we feel like sitting in a restaurant. The best solution to this conundrum? Take out! But from where? Asparagus, duh! The take out items on Asparagus' menu are the same as the standard items, save for alcoholic beverages (container laws and such apply). Instead of getting a standard noodle dish, we ordered some Thai Egg Rolls, and Garlic Chicken with fresh veggies. So, I walk into Asparagus to retrieve my meal; and a snippy server emerges from the bar area. "Are you here to pick up an order for Mary?" I'm still trying to figure out how she new I picking up take out. At any rate, I confirmed. She brought the bag, and then took my money. If she'd reversed the process, it would have been more efficient. I digress. About five minutes later, the server ran back through with my money and placed it in my palm. I said, "Thank you!" That's a little backwards, ey? On my way out of the door, I peaked at the change in my hand. I'm a math teacher...I knew I was short changed. But whatever, I wasn't going to make a stink (or wait 5 more minutes) over $0.40. After sitting down to eat what I anticipated would be a wonderful meal, I wished I'd made a stink about the $0.40. The food was not of the quality I'm used to at Asparagus. The sauce was too salty to stomach. And as for fresh veggies, there were very few drowning in at the bottom of this oily, salty, container. The container of rice was broken, and started spilling out into the bottom of the bag. And I could've sworn we were told that there are supposed to be 4 Thai Egg Rolls in an order. There were only 3. From the (lack of) service to the (lack of quality of the) food, I expected so much more from Asparagus. Hopefully, last night was a fluke, and the next time I'm in town it's better. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in northwest Indiana. We went for the lunch specials. I had the shrimp Pho and my wife decided to try the Chilean sea bass from the dinner menu. The service was excellent. They attended to us right off the bat. The waiter was super friendly. We tried the fried eggplant for an appetizer and was really good. Going back to the Pho and the Chilean sea bass, it was something I didn't expect to find in this area. The food was delicious and we will be back very soon. This is a classy, classic Asian place. The decor is beautiful. The tables, silverware and setting is well thought out and just meticulous from what I saw. The music is calming and in the background as it should be. The staff is friendly and polite. Now... the food. Is Amazing. I had avocado spring rolls, light, tasty and had 2 sauces to dip. Both flavorful. I tried the shrimp Pho. Never had it before, but it was great. Rice Noodles were light, airy. Bean Sprouts and green onion, jalapeño and Thai basil gave it a full depth of flavor while maintaining a simple presentation and again a light delight. Had an unusual sweet, yet savory taste while giving a spike of heat that made me sweat a bit. Awesome! I also tried the Nutty Chicken. Very tasty, complex flavor profile. From the carmelized onion, green onion, carrots and dates, cashew, almond, peanuts and water chestnuts with perfect rice. The chicken was cut into thin pieces and the sauce brought it all together. Fantastic! I've eaten here a couple of times, this time I came for lunch, about noon. The dining area had quite a few tables full, but I sat in the lounge. A little quieter at lunch time. I wasn't expecting much from a Thai restaurant in the Midwest, so I was pleasantly surprised by how great Asparagus was! I wouldn't say that the food is "authentic". It is actually more fusion style, but Asparagus really makes it work! I ordered the lobster mango spring rolls and the tofu pad thai. Both were superb! The peanuts in the pad thai were BBQ roasted, which really lent the rest of the dish a nice smokey flavor. The sauce served with the spring rolls was delicious - not quite the typical peanut sauce - but with a bit more tang and a hint of plum. Any of the rice/noodle dishes are big enough for two to share. Since I was eating alone, I had enough for a whole second meal (midnight snack/early morning breakfast). Woohooo. read more

This is a GREAT place to take friends from out of town, a date, or have a "special" dinner. (It's also great for just anything). There is no Thai food in the region that really comes close. The owners take their menu very seriously and do not dissappoint. Service and ambiance are also second to none. You really feel like you are being treated by them. We took some friends in town from Houston last night and all were blown away. Folks from Houston, a modern mecca of food, could not believe how good it was. I've been coming to Asparagus since they opened. Before that we would go to Siam Marina in River Oaks... and before that we would go to their take-out place on Sibley in Calumet City. I highly recommend the Shitake Duck and the Soldier on the Red Sea. SO Good! read more

A very disappointing visit. Unfortunately, like many restaurants after COVID, a restaurant that used to be our favorite has dramatically decreased the quality while increasing their prices. My sea bass, priced at $45 dollars, lost its natural amazing taste completely due to the overpowering spicy sauce. The soggy vegetables as a side dish finished the mediocre impression of the dish. "Mediocre" is a word to describe the chicken pad Thai, the baby back ribs and the overall service in the empty restaurant. The adjective "horrible" is appropriate to describe what was supposed to be an espresso as it contained overburdened beans brewed with a strength of a regular coffee. I do not recommend this overpriced mediocre restaurant, where the menu sounds better that the real dishes, to anyone. read more

Well after three visits my review continues to be meh. Yep meh. Today I ordered the hot and spicy stirfried beef which arrived neither hot or spicy. The atmosphere and overall presentation of the meal was excellent and I want to come back, but the food is never very good. My wife on the other hand would give this restaurant five stars as she always enjoys the drunken noodles dish. Today's lunch was beef and the beef was tasteless and often filled with tendons. I'm not a food snob I just expect that when I order a beef dish that I can actually taste that it's beef I'm eating. When I ask for spicy at an Asian restaurant I'm expecting to be almost blown away with spice. I detected absolutely no spice in the hot and spicy dish. My husband made reservations here for my birthday as a surprise to me, he was told one thing over the phone however we experienced something different in person.... He was told there was "a chocolate piece of cake waiting for your wife", when he called to follow up to make sure everything was set. We later learned that that wasn't true and that Asparagus does not offer complementary deserts. Thats their prerogative. The concerning part here is that 1) my husband was told (specifically) that there was "a slice of chocolate cake waiting for her" & 0 accommodation was made 2) the nonchalant attitude from the male server that we experienced 3) while still dining - no one asked for anything to be "complementary", I simply asked was there anything you guys did for birthdays.... Whether that's sing a song, have a selection of deserts for special occasions, a candle sparkler - anything! 4) The attitude seemingly came off from the server as dismissive. His response to the entire party (of 6) was "We don't offer anything for birthdays, if Kate gave out a slice of cake for each birthday she'd be giving away hundreds of dollars! That's a $12 piece of cake!" If Asparagus offers a $12 piece of chocolate cake fitting for a birthday, please bring that out. We would have paid for it. Simple. The tone was just off to be quite frank! We all left with a feeling of confusion and as if we weren't welcomed. I did not have a delightful time here for my birthday, the moment was ruined. The bigger disappointment was the fact that this restaurant was selected out of the hundreds of restaurants that my husband could have chose from our commute from West Lawn.
