To put it succinctly - my son went to Aspen Dental O'Fallon for a chip in his tooth. Three hours later he came out with an estimate for $4k (with insurance), a tooth cleaning he didn't go in for and pressed to book a follow up polishing which he was told he needed to book and was included in the cleaning (unnecessary/no health benefit and actually costs a further $102, so not actually included). Ultimately they appear to have discussed everything but the tooth he expressly booked the appointment consult to treat. As they said he needed a root canal, to have his wisdom teeth removed and an assortment of other work. All totaling $8k without insurance and $4k with. Reminder he went in for a chipped tooth consult. They then pressed him on booking these procedures, both through them and referrals to other clinics, and signing him up for financing. High pressure sales and the dentist (who came off as more salesman than practitioner in bedside manner) ultimately lost interest when he said he would consider the recommendation for all these additional procedures and didn't "sign here!" We are finding another dentist who actually will provide care and am now unfortunately keeping a keen eye on what they actually file to my insurance to make sure they bill precisely what we have on the itemized statement. He is as well keeping an eye on his bank account. If I could give negative stars I would. read more

I tried to get in as a new patient and I had confirmed my appointment online through THEIR link and confirmed on their automated portal. I even updated my insurance information online as they requested. The next day was a Friday and they called me while I was working (so I couldn't answer the phone), I couldn't even check my messages until 1:00 yet they gave me an ultimatum that if I didn't call by noon (Friday) they would cancel. I tried called as soon as I could but I didn't get anyone. Then I get a call saying they cancelled my appointment because they didn't get a VERBAL confirmation! So obviously someone was there at the office they just didn't pick up! This was the most ridiculous and frustrating experience I've ever had with a doctor. I am going somewhere else! First of all, all of the hygienists and dentists I dealt with were great! My issue is with an overly inflated estimate (required to be paid upfront) and a "goodie" bag, costing $199, added with no specific discussion or option for rejection. I had 3 visits - one for the initial exam & X-rays, second for a deep cleaning and third for 3 extractions. At the first visit the financial person sat down with us to show how much the bill was going to be after insurance was applied - $3282. At the conclusion of the cleaning I was handed a "goodie bag". I was stunned to see that it held a new Sonicare electronic toothbrush and a powered water flosser, which I later discovered had cost me an extra $199. There was NO discussion regarding this extra add-on and I was given no opportunity to decline all or part of it. The toothbrush, at least, I would've declined as I already have an Oral B sonic toothbrush. I discovered this add-on only because, after I received the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from my insurance company, I compared what Aspen had charged me and what my insurance company said I should've paid. While Aspen had charged me $3282, as an in network provider, they should've only charged $1503!! So Aspen Dental inflated my estimate by $1771!! When I brought the discrepancy to Aspen Dental's attention, I was told that the estimate numbers came from the insurance company (Really ? Why so different from the EOB?), payment up front is common (annoying, but this seems to be true) and that the EOB wasn't sufficient proof of what I should've been charged. I was also told that any refund owed to me would be sent directly to the finance company. We then had to PAY the portion of their estimate not covered by the finance company. I needed treatment, so we paid the almost $800.00 When we received the final EOB, I called my insurance company who told me what was covered, what wasn't and how much I was supposed to have paid. I was only supposed to have been charged $1503 (not including the $199 for the toothbrush I don't need!) I reached out to Aspen billing and spoke to excellent people. They told me that they had just received the final payment from the insurance and that my refund would be automatically sent to the finance company to pay down the debt - so far so good. A few days later, I saw a reversal/refund of the my personal payment back into my bank account. Then I waited a week and watched my balance with the finance company - no credit of the almost $1000 I was owed. Finally I called the Aspen billing department again. The rep stated that she saw a "balance owed" of $882 (not the $998 I should be getting back). We determined that the difference was due to the charge for, you guessed it, the toothbrush I never wanted! I asked why it was just sitting on their books as a credit and hadn't been sent to the finance company. I was told that to do that I would have to talk to my local office! She could only send me the funds via my debit card. Hopefully, there will be no problem receiving that refund, but honestly! Why in the world was their "estimate" double what I was actually responsible for paying?! Why tell me the EOB didn't mean anything when those prices were almost spot on, certainly much more accurate than their "estimate"! Why tell me that any refund would be directed to the finance company when instead I had to follow up myself?! If I hadn't, how long would it have sat in their pocket rather than mine? TLDR- Had to pay upfront double the actual charge, was charged for equipment I didn't want or need (sketchy!), and my refund only happened because I followed up! Any refund should be automatic so people aren't charged extra interest! (Not an issue in our case.) I will not be seeking dental care at Aspen Dental again. Just way too sneaky and sketchy. I scheduled an 8am appointment on Monday the 15. On Wednesday I called Aspen Dental and gave them all of my insurance information. I missed a call from them on Friday thinking she's calling about my insurance card. Arrived for my appointment on Monday December the 15th and they cancelled my appointment because they said I did not confirm my appointment. Very disappointed. Will not deal with them in any shape, form or fashion. If I know someone who is thinking about going to them I will do my best to tell them to find someone else. read more

I would never recommend O'Fallon Illinois Aspen dental they are simply awful! They don't return phone calls. It's hard to get back in after you've had your first appointment. It's just awful and they don't like sending out referrals even if they are referring you out they never sent my referrals to no location after begging One phone call after another after another... then going to the office three times and signing the same thing three times and all three times never did they send out my referral! Until this day 4 months later... it's still not there! Shame on you for delayed my dental care! Hard to believe you guys are still in business at that office you are the worst dentist office I've ever attended and I've been going to a dentist for 57 years. read more

I had a very odd new patient visit. I had X-rays which went great but they wouldn't clean my teeth due to an issue. The hygienist made me feel like I had teeth like the monster from the black lagoon. I did not see a doctor because he was too busy. The lady in other room asked if she was forgotten. I left also due to another appointment somewhere else. I wasn't impressed and very disappointed. I appreciate the office staff and nurses, hygienists, and the dentists but this business model is terrible. I have a broken molar and the entire experience was a push for me to get cosmetic work and addressing my needs as a patient was secondary. There was zero focus/concern on first the broken tooth or second really attempting to cater care to my needs; in short they completely ignored the fact that I was in extreme, excruciating pain and just wanted to push cosmetics and focus on getting me as a long term patient instead of actually fixing the problem. They even had the gall to sit me down with the 'Office Manager' to discuss financing and tell me about their "today only" discount. DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND I AM IN PAIN HERE IDGAF ABOUT THE COST BILL MY INSURANCE I'LL FIGURE IT OUT LATER. Also, they were very reluctant to provide useful information that I might take to my dentist of choice to get the work done that I need. In fact, they never really gave me anything useful. I was told I needed an expensive type of cleaning ( over$1000 ). I asked is this just a one time treatment? They said yes. After thinking about it, I said no just do the regular cleaning they said insurance won't allow it for we already put in your chart you need the deep cleaning, so I said go ahead. Then 4 months later they made an appointment for me which normally is 6 months for another visit so I called them to see what's up? They said for your cleaning maintenance. I asked if this is included in my $1000 payment and they said no, your visit will cost $200. I Canceled my appointment. And won't go back for they lied to me. I was in the office yesterday, I have 2 very good insurance coverages. After looking at the print out the bill estimates and they don't know how to simple math. I have procedures that are paid 100% for cleanings and instead not charging me for anything, they wanted to charge 100% of the cost. They want to charge me for an electric toothbrush, that I don't need. Since the toothbrush can be purchased over the counter, the insurance doesn't pay for it. I called both insurance companies to verify my benefits, I am correct. Please check your benefits before you pay for anything. They want you pay half the cost before you can schedule your next appointment too. I am going to take my x rays and go somewhere else. read more
