The unusually Late operating hours are the main reason I feel both strongly impressed and grateful for finally experiencing Assam Indian Kitchen. One of the two brothers whom operate this remarkably unique establishment took time to discuss and explain their dishes, the history of their Eastern Indian Region (of Assam) where they hail from, and the options of requesting levels of heat in their dishes to order as well zero chili if that is what the diner prefers. When I worked at an office job just north of Victory Blvd. I visited Assam (located south of Victory) with my Boss whom loves Indian Food. The reason we didn't get to enjoy their food is that Assam does not open until 4 PM, remaining open until midnight. It is worth making the effort to dine during these hours because the flavors are pure. The Naan is a uniquely delectable and unexpected surprise, and both the Korma & Curry I had were delicious with rice. The fact that I had already eaten before arriving at Assam did nothing to dim the brightness of flavors for it is less how much one eats, but how good the flavors. This was an unexpected treat which continues to inspire my future return because the experience was amazing. The dishes normally would be chosen, either one or the other, simply because they are quite similar. The curry had a greater depth even as I found the Korma savory and delicious. My friend and Yelp reviewer, Gary I, had not tasted either (yet) therefore in order to review them he had to taste them for which I am delighted still. The Naan contained fruit and nuts; and was delicious in it's own right. The rice was done flawlessly, and was the perfect counter point and base for both the Korma & curry (both had chicken) and although I did not eat a great amount I savored all the flavors, and cannot wait to return! This restaurant was the perfect choice to bring a friend who had never tried Indian food before. This small but charming restaurant was very accommodating to me and my date. Although they didn't offer vegetable pakoras, they made some special at my request because they had onion bhaji (essentially "onion rings") on the menu. I was grateful for the accommodation. We ordered some naan (for my date- I am GF), classic chicken tikka masala and lamb saag with plain rice. We asked for no spice/1 for my dates sensitive palate. They were concerned that they had heard all Indian food was spicy and had avoided it for that. The chicken tikka masala had classic warm flavors and color, tender chunks of chicken in a creamy tomato sauce. It was an instant hit with my guest. The Lamb Saag was also well, but not over, seasoned. The meat was fork-tender. Even without the usual kick of spice I choose when ordering, it was flavorful and enjoyable. I would recommend this unglamorous location for the quality of the food. I will visit this place again. The staff were incredibly polite and attentive. Assam Indian Kitchen is probably the only non-chain restaurant in all of Van Nuys to stay open until 12am every day except Tuesday when it's closed. This is a godsend for night owls who want to dine late. There is a feeling that you are in a new version of "The Night Hawk" by Edward Hopper where single diners sit at a diner very late at night passively waiting for what no one knows. The other more important reason to come is the kind, quietly hospitable waiter who took my order. He will ask how piquant you want the curries. I chose a step up from mild, and for me, it had enough of a kick. Much of the food seems cooked to order so the food comes out hot and fresh off the stove. Assam is a state in Northeast India north of the nation of Bangladesh. It's famous for its Assam tea found even in English Breakfast and Irish Breakfast teas. 0) Chutney: a. Mint is puréed in a watery solution that is very subtle. b. Mango Is thick like a confiture/jam. Very pleasantly sweet with chopped fruit in a viscous, sugary liquid that may have a touch of vinegar to enliven the fruitiness. c) Cilantro-Mint: Watery purée with notes of green herbals. 1. Vegan Samosa: a very crisp wrapper perhaps made from a combination of rice & wheat flour contrasts against pleasantly starchy potato flavoured with a touch of aromatic Garam Masala spice blend. Coming out piping hot, great textual contrast between crispy & plush. Excellent must have Samosa. I originally ordered the beef Samosa, but they had run out, and I'm glad they did. 2) Pasanda Curry is made from finely ground nuts like possibly almonds, green herbs, curry powder, and perhaps yogurt for a creamy consistency. It had enough of a chile piquancy to heat up my tongue to stimulate the taste buds. Generous portion of shrimp added a sweet sea minerality and fibrous meatiness that went well. Bit of corn starch to thicken the smooth sauce. Rather subtle, sophisticated dish 3) Coconut Curry definitely has coconut milk fragrance, & flavour that thickens the curry. Also woody, distinct sweetness that seems to come from nutmeg. The chunks of lamb are well done, meaty with a chaw. No hint of that lamb gaminess. 4) Rogan Josh: Very refreshing, light curry with grilled onion, tomato, bell pepper, garlic that are flash sautéed to bring out dulcet tone of the vegetables. Shrimp with marine scented, fibrous meatiness kept this dish subtle and ethereal. This is the kind of delicate curry that is rarely found in Los Angeles. Definitely a must get if heavy handed cooking is to be avoided. 5) Methi Curry: Fenugreek scented stewed thick chunks of lamb braised in a dark brown, heavy sauce. Meat eaters will like this for its emphasized meaty textures. 6) Korma: Lightly, creamy, coconut milk, sweet, smooth curry with a hint of ginger, coriander, puréed cashew to add a "cashew butter" nuttiness. Slightly gamey lamb went well. 7) Yellow Curry: May have a bit of Garam Masala, turmeric for a touch of woody earthiness. Mild and semi sweet. Breast meat chicken. 8) Paswari Naan: Stuffed with a sweet paste of coconut, almond, and raisin baked in Naan flat bread. Great to dip pieces of this bread into Methi Curry gravy. Or Paswari can be eaten as a dessert with Cumin scented Chai. 1-7a) Basmati Rice accompanies all currys. Nutty with dry texture, lightly friable, al dente. This rice is made to go with savory, multi-spiced, complex South Asian food as a textural contrast and palate neutral relief from all the complex spice mixtures. Quiet late night dining along with meditative, musical South Asian chanting that is contemplative and introspective to facilitate mindfulness in order to truly appreciate the food to the fullest. 4+ stars read more

I ordered takeout from Assam Indian Kitchen last night. I called in the order and picked up 20 minutes later as promised. The restaurant itself is not in the best of areas, but the food was good. It is a small restaurant on Van Nuys Blvd. The food was piping hot when opened. I tried the vegetable biryani, the butter chicken, and chicken tikka masala. Also got some cheese naan. The biryani was very good and flavorful. The chicken curries came with extra plain rice. Everything was very tasty. The chicken in the tikka masala was a little tough with some bites, but overall very good. The naan was very very good too. Overall, pretty solid food. I'd get takeout from here again. read more

They put the perfect amount of spice in the tikka masala (even when asking for spicy). Tons of chicken in it as well! Only thing I wish I would have gotten more of is the rice! Way less rice than Tikka Masala! Which I didn't think was fair for the price, but the food is so good I'll probably still get it again haha! They are always super nice here! They even bring takeout to your car sometimes! This is family owned which is important, because they care more about the service and quality of food they provide! The inside is super small, I definitely don't recommend for large groups. However my boyfriend said they renovated a little so there is a bit more space than before which is good! I used to live around the corner from this area, but relocated shortly right before Assam opened its doors in 2021. I enjoy the in-person much more than takeout or delivery. The food flavors are solid and they have a good selection of beverages (non-alcoholic). Their samosas a very thick, flaky, doughy and loaded with filling. Definitely my favorite dish here by far. A.I.K. makes a variety of Naan and classic Indian dishes. I ordered delivery tonight and some items were left out and portions felt a bit less than when dining in. The Aloo Gobi is okay! The Vegetable Biryani is worth trying! The Veggie Curry was a bit under salted or at least it was most recently... The house salad was very fresh, but on the mild side as far as dressing and didn't have some essentials promised like shredded carrots or oranges... Which is kind of odd, but it did have other great veggie and is a good portions for a house/side salad... Was really surprised the drinks weren't delivered tonight. Not sure if they ran out or it was just missed. Assam Indian Kitchen is very close to the Van Nuys Courthouse with loads of street parking in the area, especially when they open around 3 PM. I would dine in again (though it's been a long while) versus takeout or delivery as it's a very cute place and everyone is very friendly. So food days seem much better than others, hoping for more better ones for Assam. I've never had those dishes anywhere else where it seemed watered down and so bland. My guess is the blandness was due to it seemingly watered down. After an afternoon of shopping and planning for a future party, my friend and I decided to pick up Indian food or dinner. Based on the all the raving yelp reviews I was expecting a 5 star meal, but what we ate was 3 star at best. Veggie Samosa: 4 stars. By the time we got home to eat dinner, the samosa was still hot and the dough was still crispy. The filling was creamy, well seasoned. Served with tamarind and mint sauce, I would eat this appetizer again. Lamb Tikka Masala: 4 stars The flavor of the sauce was good, not too spicy, not too mild. The flavor of the lamb was also good, but the lamb was just a tad overcooked but still quite good, and at a 4 star rating, I would also order this dish again. Aloo Gobi: 3 stars This dish was ok. I couldn't shake the feeling that the cauliflower in this dish was previously frozen, but I can't prove it. My partner makes great Aloo Gobi and he makes a 5 star version of this dish. Perhaps I should have ordered a different vegetable dish? Baingan Bharta: 1 star. Oh man. Do not order this dish. This dish should be taken off the menu. The eggplant comes pureed to death to the point where it is a mushy paste and quite slimy in texture. They use a heavy hand of cinnamon on this dish and quite frankly, I wish not to speak of this dish again. What a shame since I really love Beingan Bharta. I would order the samosa and Lamb Tikka Masala again, but I'm not rushing to come back to this place. read more

Came here for a little birthday dinner the other night. It's a little hole in the wall place located on Van Nuys Blvd. It's nothing fancy, with maybe six or so tables, but don't let that sway you. The owner was so friendly and welcoming. Even shared his story about how he and his sister opened the place. He and another gentlemen were taking care of us. Our food arrived promptly but was obviously made fresh. It was piping hot and absolutely delicious. I ordered the chicken tikka masala "mild" and loved it. I'm not a fan of spice, as in heat, in the slightest and although the mild still had a tiny kick it was completely bearable and didn't linger. 10/10. As a party of six we were fortunate to try many options. We started with vegetable samosas that were perfection! Fluffy, curry potato and pea filling with delicious sauces. It's been about a year and I'm still a loyal customer. The best thing about Assam's Indian Kitchen is how consistently delicious their dishes are. It's perfect. They're so kind here. They never fail to package a perfect and HOT meal with tons of flavor. Hands down, the best Indian food restaurant I've been to. Ever! Not only that, but one of my absolute favorite spots in general. The owner is so very kind, more than willing to fix mistakes (which has never happened to me anyways). It's not speedy service, its GOOD service! We're too used to fast food and convenience, but they cook from the heart here and that kind of art may take a moment. Very much worth it. Prices are very good in person at least. Not typically super busy so its also a very calm environment. I seriously could not recommend this place more. The chicken tikka masala and garlic cheese naan are my go-to, never gets old and was my biggest craving back when I was pregnant. It's still my biggest craving and was even before pregnancy! I absolutely love it here. Don't come in ready to judge, come in ready to be pleasantly surprised. Gulab Jamun and Mango Lassi are also huge favorites of mine if you've got a sweet tooth. The food was delicious and the service was good. What this restaurant lacks in ambiance, it makes up for in flavor. I ordered the mango lassi and chicken tikka masala dinner with basmati rice. The garlic naan was crispy and perfectly seasoned. The restaurant was loud because of a large party that continued to stay in the small dining area long after they finished their meal. I was in a corner booth and I enjoyed my dinner but eventually had to leave because of the noise. I appreciated the restaurant and their gracious service.
