I had an okay experience at Bollywood Cafe. The portions were generous and the naan was very good, but overall the food was pretty subpar. The atmosphere also felt off -- there was basically no vibe, and the staff all seemed unhappy to be there. Unfortunately, I got sick about an hour after eating there, which really ruined the experience for me. I honestly believe some of the food may not have been handled properly. I haven't gotten sick from a restaurant in nearly two decades, so this was especially disappointing. I definitely won't be returning. read more

I haven't had Indian food for quite some time, so I suggested to my husband to go out for dinner. We found this place on Yelp. When we got there it was quite empty except for one table with a couple, there were no other customers. But that was fine with us. We were greeted by a nice gentleman and shown a table where we could sit. The place is small but very clean, and on the chic side. The food, all I can say and I also can speak for my husband, was fantastic!!! My spouse had shrimp biryani and I had lamb tika masala. The lamb pieceswere soyender and the sauce was ti die for. And we also had some regular naan. All in all I must say, their kitchen staff ( cooks) do an incredible job and the gentleman who took our order and brought us our food and the other gentleman who took our check, both were extremely polite, professional, kind and gave us the feeling we were welcomed guests. I'd recommend this place a billion times over and it's a lot more affordable and they have great lunch specials! I made reservations for our party of 10 after going to the theatre on a Saturday afternoon. The venue was in downtown LA and surprisingly there weren't a lot of suitable options for our group and the time of day but this option in Studio City came up. The restaurant was accommodating to our large group and kindly agreed to divide our checks for our needs. We all ordered different dishes and added the $8 dinner option to include the soup/salad, naan, rice and dessert. The food was superb! I got the Lamb Rogan Josh and my daughter got the Chicken Jalfrezzi, which we both enjoyed immensely. The restaurant is small, but cozy and feels pretty authentic with a clean, formal atmosphere. I ordered lunch from a delivery service. It arrived early (and hot!) which was great! I had the vegetable korma...delicious and plentiful. The paratha was good, however I tasted margarine, not butter as described. The rice pudding dessert is delicious, even if pricey. I would order here again, just a different naan. I have been to just about every Indian restaurant along Ventura Blvd and while most of them are good and have great service, I've been really impressed by the flavor at Bollywood. I live in the area and this is one of the only restaurants that have not sneakily decreased their sizes. The portions are a good value for the price. I believe they have fake reviews on this site. We ordered the dinner for 2 and it cost $70. The food was old and not freshly cooked. The meat was all dried out and clearly cooked earlier that day and left under a hot lamp. The fried foods that came with it - samosa and fried onion ball were tasteless and also old. The sag paneer was fine, but how do you mess that up? And the rest of the dinner is two large containers of rice and two full orders of naan. All this was was extremely dried out meat and a couple of fried fillers and lots of rice and naan. Extremely disappointed and will never return here. It was a huge rip off. read more

Tonight we visited Bollywood Café, an Indian restaurant in Studio City. We arrived around 8:30 PM on a Friday night and were surprised to see only one other couple dining. By the time we left at 9:45, the place had filled up to about 50% capacity -- roughly a dozen guests. The location is decent, right on Ventura Boulevard, with plenty of street parking available. From the outside, the restaurant doesn't look particularly inviting -- honestly, it resembles a bit of a dive -- but inside, it's cozy. Small, slightly outdated, but clean and pleasant enough. There's a small bar area, though it wasn't clear whether they serve alcohol or just non-alcoholic beverages. We brought our own bottle of Meiomi wine and the server kindly brought us two glasses. Not quite wine glasses -- more like slightly smaller versions of the water goblets already on the table -- but it worked. I don't think they charged us a corkage fee, which was a pleasant surprise -- though to be fair, it was a twist-off cap and I handled all the pouring myself. The server was friendly and attentive. We knew what we wanted and ordered right away. The menu is extensive, with a few non-Indian items like salads and soups to appeal to broader tastes, but about 90% of the offerings are Indian-influenced. I believe the owners are Bangladeshi, but the flavors are quite similar to Northern Indian cuisine. We ordered three vegetarian dishes along with papadum and rice: Bhindi (okra) Saag Paneer (spinach and cheese) Yellow dal (lentils) One of my pet peeves is when food arrives lukewarm -- not here! Everything came out piping hot, which I really appreciated. The seasoning was spot-on. We asked for extra spicy and received a toned-down, American-style version of spicy, but it was still flavorful and enjoyable. Prices are reasonable, and the food and service were solid overall. A couple of minor critiques: The okra had some fibrous pieces that were tough and inedible -- they should trim the larger, mature okra more carefully. The papadum was crisp and tasty but a bit too salty, and I would've loved more caraway seeds sprinkled on top. Whether it was the salty papadums, the wine, the spice, or some stealthy sodium hiding in the food, I spent the next two hours guzzling half a gallon of chilled water like I'd crossed the desert . The food was excellent. It came out freshly cooked and piping hot. We asked for mild and we were able to enjoy the various spices on the dishes. Nice clean restaurant. Good food. I got vegetable bryani, which was really tasty it had a really good texture to it. Vegetable masala was very good and spicy and cream. Malai kofta was creamy, and the Kosta was made with vegetables, which made it so soft. Eggplant bharta was seasoned just right, nothing too strong or overpowering. One lady had her birthday the restaurant crew played her nice birthday song and brought her an amazing stunning candles that opened up and started playing music very cool piece of candles and turns around in circles while playing music. I so much recommend this restaurant especially for birthdays. I like this cool birthday touch very different.
