First time dining! The sampler platter was ordered to start. We adored the sauces that came with, and the flavors that the sampler platter offered! Next, the Butter Chicken and the Chicken Tikka Masala were ordered as the entrees. With the entrees Garlic Cheese Naan and an order of steamed rice was ordered and shared. Before hitting Universal studios, we wanted to have lunch so found this place on yelp with stellar ratings. Kid ordered veg pakoras and papadum. I ordered Fish tandoori and garlic naans. I expected a bit more flavor from the fish tandoori and for the price papadum should have been deep fried instead of roasted. Being Indian food snobs from the SF bay area, this restaurant is around 3.5 out of 5 but given we didn't try any curries and other things, giving it a 4 rating. Service was fast and waiters were courteous. Tip: If you park on the opposite side, crossing street to go to the restaurant can be tricky since pedestrian crossings are too far from the restaurant (10 min walk) so park on the same side of the road as the restaurant or you have to hike a bit or jaywalk which is to be avoided of course. read more

We went to this restaurant on Father's Day for an early dinner. Although there are parking spots behind the eatery, there are very few (4 or 5). But on a Sunday, parking on the street was easy and plentiful. The dining room is elegantly decorated and bright. Service was impeccable. We were a party of 5 adults plus a baby in a stroller, and we were easily accommodated. (Though the restaurant is not accessible from the front, you can go around the back through the parking lot.) Our appetizers included potato and peas samosas and pakoras. The samosa were like mini knishes, big and stuffed with plenty of potatoes with little flavor. They were lacking the usual Indian spiciness. I honestly don't remember eating any peas. The pakoras were crunchy and satisfying. The naan included plain and onion and pleased us all. We had a mild chicken korma, a medium+ (spice level) lamb korma, a mixed grill tandoori, a medium lamb vindaloo, and a medium chicken tikki masala. We also shared a chicken biryani. The tandoori meat was seasoned and tender. The other entrees were OK, with the medium+ korma needing a little more spice. The lamb vindaloo had more of a curry color and flavor instead of the usual fiery red color. Nevertheless, it was delicious. The chicken biryani could have used more veggies and meat and more spices. Dinner with 6 entrees, 2 appetizers, 2 breads, and tax was about $175. read more

Came on a Thursday and it's a wonderfully peaceful afternoon. Abu took such good care of us and made wonderful suggestions. I'm so glad we finally came out here, this restaurant has been one of my bookmarks! There's an absolute valid reason La Mirch has such high ratings. It's special whenever my wife and I have a date night to ourselves. I chose Indian since it had been too long. Lal Mirch popped up in Yelp and away we went. It is a gem. The meter on the street rejected credit card payment so when we entered the restaurant I took out some paper money and explained the reason to the man in the front as to why I needed change. He refused the money and gave me 4 quarters. Who does that these days?! It kept getting better. Raffi and Abu were our servers. Both were fun and personable. Very good food and friendly service! The butter chicken was the best I've ever had and it paired really well with the garlic naan. It was probably my favorite dish we ordered. The lamb biryani was also really good. There was a nice coconut flavor steeped into the rice and lamb. I got it spicy and it was pretty spicy, but it was really pleasant as you ate more i.e. the spice didn't get overbearing as you continued eating. The rice pudding was also really nice. I'm usually pretty picky with coconut flavors in desserts, but the flavor was fairly light. If you absolutely hate coconut, then maybe not for you, but otherwise I would definitely recommend. Lal Mirch has become our go-to for the past couple of years--it never disappoints with their magnificent service and romantic atmosphere in the restaurant. We usually order for to-go, but our last experience with Abu solidified how tough it is to try other Indian restaurants elsewhere. We got the chicken tikka, chicken tikka masala, paratha, tandoori roti, chicken korma, fish madras, and saag paneer along with white biryani and all the extra condiments like chutneys and yogurt. It was super tough to decide what was our favorites! Everything was perfectly flavored and spiced (ordered medium, but you can play it safe with mild). This time, we realized that the fish madras is going to be a new favorite! The fish and tomatoes are sublimely cooked whereas the sauce is not too heavy but it's zingy and flavorful. Even with being fully satiated, we brought home more than plenty of leftovers. Lastly, I can't emphasize the service enough. The food came out quickly and Abu was the sweetest and provided us with the utmost care. He was also nice to see the restaurant half full on a Sunday night - everybody enjoying their food. Cons - each curry we tried seemed on the sweeter side which made them all taste fairly similar, no beer, naan was on the thin side and not as fluffy as I enjoy but it was still fabulous. I went to Lal Mirch last week for a decadent Wednesday lunch with four friends coming from different parts of L.A. Most of them had been before, but it was new to me, an exceedingly pleasurable discovery. The restaurant is large with a tiny parking lot, but I guess 1:00 on a weekday is a good time to go. I got one of the few spots, and our group was among the only customers. I gather that Lal Mirch is a popular place for delivery, and wonder if the brick and mortar is always calm. It's not a buzzy restaurant, just a quietly outstanding on Ventura Boulevard. We got a comfortable corner table in the spacious dining room, which was decked out with festive Indian-themed wallpaper. Gold with lots of scenery, plus elephants and the Taj Mahal. Service was great, welcoming and prompt. We put together a giant order, and within minutes, our table was stacked with an absolutely mouthwatering feast. It was basically a build-your-own buffet, and I went back for seconds, thirds, maybe even fourths. I don't know what it is about Indian food, but I can clear plates of it well before my body notices I've had enough. Everything was delicious. Vegetable samosas were superb, crispy and flavorful, served with mint and tamarind chutneys. The masala fries were addictive, golden fries smothered in masala sauce. None of us are vegetarian, but we got three vegetable entrees, and this felt correct. I'd never had baigan bortha before and it was fantastic, roasted eggplant simmered with fresh spices. The vegetable korma was like a nice, light curry, with a mix of veggies cooked in creamy sauce with garlic, ginger, coconut, and mild spices. The sagh paneer was classic, spinach cooked with homemade cheese in a creamy sauce. We rounded out our lunch with some chicken tikka masala and lamb makhni. I'm basic when it comes to Indian food, and chicken tikka masala is my go-to dish. The version here was as good as any I've had before, the chicken cooked with ground cashews and that creamy, tomato-rich masala sauce. The lamb makhni was also deeply satisfying, tender lamb with ground cashews and a creamy butter-based sauce. Both the plain and garlic naan went well with everything, as did the fluffy rice, which I threw down my gullet with all those delectable sauces. I didn't realize how much I'd eaten until dinnertime rolled around and I was still full. The next time I ate was at lunch the next day, and I never felt a single pang of hunger. This was a tremendous meal, and I very much look forward to my next visit to Lal Mirch. read more
