We booked a reservation in advance and had a nice booth inside with plenty of room! The restaurant itself is small, and the 2 seater high top tables are very cramped with a tiny table for eating (so I'd recommend going with at least 3 people). The food was very high quality. My favorite were the Dan Dan noodles - so yummy!!! The gong bao chicken was nice and spicy, also a favorite. The chimichurri steak was so tender! The beef noodles were too salty for us. Came here for an anniversary after doing some research and receiving a recommendation and it was even better than we could have hoped for. We made a reservation for two and were immediately seated upon arrival (I would highly recommend booking a reservation even for just two people on a Saturday night). The outdoor seating was heated and covered, so no worries about cold weather! Our waitress, Patty, was amazing and very accommodating! We even got a complimentary small bowl of vegan noodles as an anniversary gift, which was so amazing and thoughtful. They have an amazing selection of vegetarian options, as well! I got the basil eggplant, per our waitress's recommendation and it was delightful. It was hot, spicy, flavorful, and just what I wanted! My partner got the Mapo Tofu and really enjoyed it (though it was definitely on the spicier side)! I ordered the Tahitian Rum Punch with less rum and more pineapple juice and it was wonderful; I would absolutely order it again! I love Astoria. It's one of my favorite spots in the city and I'm always excited to go back. The inside of the restaurant is gorgeous and dimly lit, and the outside space is nice and good for people watching. A great place for a date or catching up with friends. If you plan to go on a Friday or Saturday night, make a reservation in advance or get there early to avoid long wait times. The cocktails and food are tasty. My favorite drinks that I've tried are the Mojito and the Painkiller. For first-timers, note that on the menu there's a cat under each dish breathing a different amount of fire to indicate how spicy the dish is. Walnut Shrimp (5/5): The star of the show, this was delicious. I loved how sweet and creamy the sauce was, and the walnuts added a nice little crunch. Beef Noodles (4/5): Simple and tasty. The noodles were fat and SUPER long (it was almost like it was just one long noodle).  Potato Slivers (4/5): Very similar to the ones Mom made growing up but more oily and garlic-y.  Dan Dan Noodles (4/5): Strong chili oil flavor which I enjoyed. I came here with my sister and cousin for a girls night out. We got lucky with finding street parking. As we entered about 5 mins late after rescheduling our original reservation, the hostess makes it a point to tell us in a roundabout way that we should be mindful next time of our reservation time as they will not always be able to accommodate our rescheduling due to them being a popular spot and we were lucky to catch them on that particular night. I found this a bit rude and condescending especially since she used a nice nasty tone. Upon entry the restaurant is pretty dark and moody. It has a train station theme. I felt slightly overdressed but it was dark enough not to care. Next up, the menu! We all ordered pretty similar and got the following: Chili wontons- 10/10 Salt n pepper eggplant- 11/10 (unfortunately this changed on our second visit to a 5/10, there must've been a different chef because the peppercorns (I'm assuming that's what they used) overpowered the dish leaving it bitter tasting) Pea shoots- 10/10 Salt n pepper shrimp- 10-10 Of note, our waiter was a bit tongue in cheek and made some rather rude comments. Astoria has officially become my all time favorite restaurant! I've had several dishes now and narrowed down my favorites. The lazi chicken, salt and pepper shrimp, spicy wontons, vegan noodles, and salt and pepper eggplant are a few of my favorites. Every drink I've tried here has also been exceptional. It's on the pricier side, but well worth it in my opinion. It can be tough to find a reservation but they do take walk ins. Service was quick but we didn't realize for too long that the menu was on a QR code on the coaster so we were left sitting for awhile. They bring out complimentary goldfish which is a strange choice. The food is very good. We split the hand pulled noodles with beef, spicy wontons, and the vegetable trio. The wontons were the favorite and honestly not too spicy. The vegetables were good but left a pool of grease that wasn't welcome. You'll want to order probably 2 plates per person and they're about $20 each. Certainly not a cheap night. We had a very pleasant experience at Astoria but I cannot say I understand why lines are so much longer than at other bars. We ordered one drink each (photo has details of which) and found them to be strong with pleasant summery flavours. We were given free wine due to long delays for food which was very nice. I hope that this is not a regular occurrence though and that maybe some of the staff were out sick or something. Our food was delicious. My partner is vegetarian and there was a decently sized vegetarian menu. We found that two dishes was the perfect amount for two adults, despite the recommendation on the menu. Maybe taller people would need two or more dishes per person. Overall, a pleasant experience but one star off for the difficulty of actually getting in the restaurant. We made our reservation 3 weeks in advance and still only patio tables were available with the option to move into the bar. There are many other good cocktail bars in DC that people should distribute themselves to so this one is less crowded all the time! read more

I love the decorations, I just wish it was a bit bigger because it's so good and popular. The hostess stand is not run well, it's chaos. But the servers and bartenders are all really great. I also HATE QR code menus so just a warning if you hate them too they only have QR code menus. But it's worth it. We had the Dan Dan noodles and beef noodles. Most of us liked the sweet and savory taste of the Dan Dan noodles more. It is a dryer noodle. The beef noodle have a lot more sauce, and the beef was excellent, but just didn't like the sauce as much. The pea shoots are delicious and oddly filling. And the double cooked pork was so good. My ultimate favorite though was the walnut shrimp. The are perfectly fried with a sugary glaze that wasn't too sweet, but at the same time be aware it is sweet. The interior is small and dimly lit with the high noise level due to the loud stereo system. The food however is excellent. It's best to order multiple dishes to share family style. This is an intimate dining venue, with tiny tables and a packed bar. Our two person high-top was built into the wall and could just barely fit the two dishes we ordered. But it's pretty and the vibes are nice, and DC rent is expensive. Our waiter was very attentive and helped us select drinks more suited to our tastes for the second round, which was very helpful. The dumplings and Dan Dan noodles were both delicious but quite spicy; I wish we had gotten something more palette cleansing to go with them. I also appreciated our waiter counseling us that we didn't need two whole orders of dumplings for two people like we planned instead of upselling us--that's great service. The menu is, unfortunately, a QR menu, and the drinks are "artistically" presented in abstract boxes that make them difficult to read. I ended up giving up and just ordering the same drink as my friend for the first round, and probably why I didn't love it (not objectively bad, just not my taste). It's tough to go 3 stars on this review because the food is so, so good! Everything we had we thoroughly enjoyed, especially the chimichurri and the beef noodles--the beef noodles were out of this world! But boy, the service was not good! We waited at our table for 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us, and then someone came by and just asked about drinks, then a second person came by and asked about drinks, and then a third person came and asked if we wanted to order-- I have no idea who our waiter/waitress even was or if we actually had one; it was very busy and nobody seemed to spend much time at any of their tables. We waited 45 minutes for our food and then an extra 10 minutes for one dish that was missed. Nobody checked on us or mentioned the missing dish so we had to flag someone down to locate it. Eventually, the manager came and apologized and said he would comp the late dish. Once we finished eating, we waited for some time and then had to flag someone down for our check as well. For such a busy restaurant, it seems like they have serious staffing issues. The food was fantastic, but the service was dreadful. read more

This is one of those places that people like because it has a "cool" atmosphere, but in reality the food is not good. Also, the waitress gave us the wrong chicken dish. We suspected this much, but decided to just eat it anyways. Then halfway through the meal, she informs us that our order was wrong and brought us the right one. A difficult reservation, we lucked out on the waitlist picking up a 7:30pm spot on Friday night, and instantly dropped our other reservation because of the buzz around Astoria. It did not disappoint! Starting with the service, a bit nonchalant/"busy" is the best way I can describe them. It took a couple minutes to get seated and we didn't see our waiter for probably 10 minutes, but it's a small place and our table was feet from the bar so the bartender took our drink order. We barely saw our server the whole time, but it wasn't really a bad thing -- she still did her job in that we got our orders in as needed. They had champagne waiting for us since I had noted it's our anniversary on the rez, and the host had also wished us which was nice! Now for the food: Wow. For reference, just before this review I entered this place on the Beli App, which makes you rank it against other places you've been, and it took the top spot immediately. Everything was perfect and it was one of, if not the best, meals we've had in the city. We started with the chili wontons and sober soup on a rainy day. The wontons were amazing and a healthy portion; the soup was really good but probably the most forgettable dish (but the bar was high). Then for the mains -- beef noodles and honey walnut shrimp -- omg. Both were 10/10 from my girlfriend and 9.5/10 from me, easily could've been 10s but I struggle to give perfect scores. Overall, don't try to walk in unless it's a rainy night or something, because the first time we tried that they said it would be an hour. After paying, he was polite and left the check, but after signing and leaving a tip, the host rudely came over and took the bill off the table as we were still at the table.... As a fellow service worker the service was horrible. Just very sad as we had a bill over $200 and our meals were pretty normal, no accommodations or anything like that. The restaurant is really small but has a very nice vibe and good music playing. The staff was attentive and made good recommendations for food. We ordered the beef noodles, crab fried rice, walnut shrimp, and a chicken dish. Four dishes between the two of us to share was plenty. Everything was delicious. My husband especially liked the shrimp. As others have commented the food is pretty spicy but they are willing to make accommodations and turn down the heat if needed. The drinks were amazing too. Truly just an "okay" spot. As soon as I sat down and looked at the menu, I realized that Astoria is exactly like Copycat (on H Street), but with a higher price tag. We ordered the following: - OG La-Zi (Dry fried Szechuan chili chicken): a total let down. I've had this dish countless times, and Astoria's version is the worst I've had of it. Notably, there is barely any chicken in the dish. The chicken is diced into very small pieces, but I swear there were no more than 10 of them, so we essentially paid $25 for a plate of chilis, peanuts, and Szechuan peppercorns. Speaking of the peppercorns, I love these, but Astoria actually uses too many! I think their goal is to numb your tongue/mouth so much that you wouldn't notice there is barely any chicken. (Just look at how many chilis were left once we picked out the meager portion of chicken!) - Walnut shrimp: just okay. This dish tasted like *something* was missing bc the flavor lacked that umph. - Red braised pork: great flavor, just a really small portion. Would've appreciated a larger cut of pork belly for $25. - Pea shoots: The best dish that we ordered-- nice and garlicky. Nestled in Dupont with a royal blue awning sits Astoria, a tiny, cozy, spot slinging delicious Sichuan cuisine. Seated at one of their high top, built in wooden bars with their cushy velvet blue seats I was drawn into all the options on the menu. I let go of all inhibitions and asked the staff what their favorite four dishes were which led me to one of my most memorable meals. Been on my list for a few months now. Initially, I thought it wouldn't be that authentic, since that doesn't really exist in DC. And usually, places with non-Chinese waiters & diners aren't that authentic. But Astoria proved me wrong! I think this owes to the fact that the menu, though not large, is quite diverse -- it can suit a range of palates. You can get your authentic Sichuan dishes like garlic eggplant, la zi chicken, and the boiled fish. And if you want spicy, they'll make it authentically numbing. As one review from the Washington Post describes it, the chef captures the "kaleidoscopic, psychotropic and thermonuclear nuances of Chinese chile peppers." My stomach was in pain afterward from the fish. The chili won tons in my opinion were alright, not worth the hype. I think they're more suited to the western palate. Plus the variety of cocktails -- after all, the owners used to be bartenders. Also, make sure to get a reservation. Our reservation for four was at 5:30, which is pretty early, but the next reservation available was 9pm. There was a line waiting outside at 6:30pm.
