My boyfriend usually orders two breakfasts so I thought he would love this place, you get so much food, it;s like two breakfasts in one. I have been a couple times but the one time I took him he even took a doggie bag home with half of his breakfast for the next day. Not only are the positions huge the food is good quality. I usually get the number 7 which comes with eggs, home fries, toast, sausage, ham AND bacon and french toast or pancake. It is a lot of food and I have never finished it but its worth getting. Breakfast is a success! Heaping portions, of everything. Flavorful beyond words. They offer daily specials, and each is in a world of it's own. I'm a fan of the banana's foster, which is three huge slices of Portuguese sweet bread, grilled french toast style, smoothed in a rum sauce, and covered with fresh banana's and pecans. This is a must try. The only down fall is that it is small. It seats maybe 75, and it is a seat yourself. The longest I ever had to wait was about 20 -30 Min's. SO I went here the other day and I was drinking my tea and eating my breakfast. I noticed that one of the past mayors of Cranston was conversing with the people in front of us. So I was trying to explain this quietly to my BF sitting in front of me. While I'm whispering I'm playing with the empty creamer containers. I have been to Athena's for breakfast quit a few times. However, after today, The five star rating by me has been earned. I came here feeling extremely hungry for a hearty breakfast and left here with a full belly and a smile. My wait for a Sunday around 10:00 was only about 10 minutes. I will say that I have waited much longer, like 30-40 minutes longer, on a weekend morning here. Seating is usually first come, first serve/seat yourself type of thing. Although, today there was a sign that asked you to wait to be seated by the hostess, so maybe that is changing. Either way, they are worth the wait. The restaurant is rather small but they have made very good use of the space! Our waitress was Brenda and she was awesome! Her personality was fun and sweet. She was very good about making sure we had everything we needed but not overly attentive, which for me that is a good thing because it can become very bothersome when someone is checking in every ten minutes. Breakfast was served pretty quickly and everything was exactly as it should be. Home fries were crunchy and delicious, my veggie omelette was cooked to perfection and even the French toast that my daughter ordered was bursting with flavor. I don't recall ever coming here and having to send an order back or disliking anything I've eaten. The portions are very generous, so you will probably want to ask for a take home box. Stopped in here on a hockey weekend, and put our name in for a party of 12. More of the team showed up and our group quickly grew to 20 - yikes! They were SO accommodating and got us all in the same room, at the same table in less than 20 minutes wait. The ordering process went flawlessly, our food all came out hot, correct, and tasted wonderful! This little hidden gem is absolutely worth going to! They have all day breakfast and their food is all home made. No meals come out for a vacuum sealed bag or out of a can here! Grab a seat at the bar if you can. If you're lucky, you can have a great conversation with a local patron as I did. The food was good. The portion was big. We had to bring half of it home. We were told the wait was 20-25 minutes but I don't think we waited that long for a table. Service was prompt and the food came out quickly. My husband had the omelet and he said it's tasty. I think food tastes better than T's. Wish I could give ZERO stars! In the midst of COVID, they really dropped the ball! Went for breakfast with my son, the tables were NOT 6' apart, the waitress did not wear her mask correctly, condiment caddies were left on the tables and when people left, they used their regular old dishrag to wipe down the tables ONLY! We went on a Sunday at brunch time as our regular places was packed beyond our willingness to wait. Sometimes I believe in serendipity. I had the stuffed pancakes (INSANE) with a side of home fries and the Mrs had a make your own omelette, which is deceiving because they actually make it for you. The stuffed pancakes, as previously mentioned, are insane! They are full of fresh ingredients blueberries, bananas, strawberries and smeared with cream cheese! Yes cream cheese! I never would have thought that was a good thing, but OMG. I am usually more of a savory breakfast person, but these sounded too good to pass up. I'm glad I tried it, because it was as delicious as it was decadent. Also, the home fries were very good. I like them a little bit crispier, but the awesome flavor of bacon probably left over from the grill made the home fries really stand out. I also tried my wife's omelette. It was super cozy and casual in here, you can tell this is a place the locals frequent often. The staff was super nice and the food was delicious. You get a lot of food for your money here, which is what I love the most about brunch! I had scrambled eggs, toast and hash browns and was full until about 6:00 that night. I have to give this place a 3 star since the pandemic. They raise the price a little and I can understand that, I don't mine that, but the food is not like it used to be. When you get a omelette they use to put nice size pieces of sausage in it now you can't taste the sausage the pieces are cut so small it is just slivers of meat, and the same with the bacon or ham. They also cut back on the home fries. I would rather that they raise the price more and give you what you uses to get. I guess I will try it a few more times because it is a good place , but no more omelettes. read more

I would just like to say the food is great here. Unfortunately the idea of reserving a table seems to be a problem. I called to book a table for a large party, seven people for this weekend. Well the person that answered the phone should not be allowed to anymore. To say she was rude is an understatement. She told me that there were other people and that I would have to understand. I went here with my boyfriend on a whim because we both surprisingly had the same day off, so why not enjoy it. The food was really good and they give you huge portions. My biggest issue was how the waitress seemed to ignore us for most of the time we were there, possibly because we weren't one of the regulars and may have seemed like a nuisance. Who knows. I'm not saying I wanted the waitress to be overly attentive but she should've atleast asked us how things were going and if we needed anything after our food came just once. If you want/need large quantities of average food, Athena's is your place. If you want regular portions of good quality food, you need to look elsewhere! The corned beef was canned! The hash browns are potatoes ONLY with no onion, peppers or seasoning. Toast burnt. Cheap coffee. Creamers for coffee are the little containers that sit on the table for hours. Artificial maple syrup. When we sat down the table was wet because the server had just cleaned the table but didn't dry it so everything (including the seat) was drenched and smelled like a stale dish cloth. We waited for her to come by so we could ask her to dry it but after a few mins, we grabbed the napkins off the table and dried everything down ourselves. The place also needs a good cleaning! I looked up their most recent RI Dept of Health inspection and they were sited for "Violation of Code: [6-202.15-16] The presence of pests is not controlled as evidenced by rodent droppings near the back door". A go to breakfast place for me and my wife that's practically in walking distance. The challah bread French toast is great, along with the omelettes. In fact I don't think we've ever had a bad experience here. Service is mostly fast and friendly, but there can be a wait during peak times on the weekend. Food, ambiance, and service were excellent! My husband, 2-year old and I decided to check out Athena's one morning. I found this place because I was specifically searching for a restaurant that served lunch food items during breakfast time; like a typical diner would. Although, I didn't want to go to a "diner" type of restaurant. This place was super nice. The servers and hostess were very accommodating and very sociable. I like Athena's. Food is solid not spectacular. Service can be A+ to a C- depending which server you get. Very creative with their stuffed french toast and pancakes, their #7 is a ton of food (eggs, pancakes,sausage, bacon, ham AND home fries with toast ) for $10. The eggs Benedict is on point. The oatmeal and fruit bowl is a meal unto itself. Im not a coffee snob so the java to me is good enough at Athena's. Portions are very healthy and the prices are very fair. Son one and i grubbed here recently and left with a $26 bill- that's crazy for us we usually are in the $35-$40 range at this type of diner. I have to agree with some reviewers- the floor needs to be swept more often-i get that you are jammed but its such a turn off to patrons to see a dirty floor. makes you think about the kitchen. One thing i have to mention: while i was there the last time a patron left their to go container on the table and walked out. after he was gone a few minutes the waitress noticed and chased him down the street to make sure he got his food. She didnt have to. A lot of folks would just chuck the food away or leave it at the counter to see if he would come back. Classy move. The coffee pots and ketchup bottles lined the back wall like the back stage of a broadway musical production of "Wicked" being performed at the Providence Performing Arts Center in the early months of summer. While in the area, my husband and I were doing errands rather early in the day and decided to stop for breakfast and there was Athena's. Lovely, clean and busy establishment with wonderful servers who offer smiles and willingness to please. My husband decided he was going to indulge in the stack of three pancakes which were huge and very good. I am a basic breakfast person and ordered eggs over medium well which were a cooked a little over medium well, but were ok.
